How do you guys manage your budgeting? I had a solid limit for myself this month and everything I've bought is under budget except for literally one set I'm looking at, which pushes me just a few dollars over. On one hand, the character is overall expensive to shop for, and the deal I see is pretty solid. On the other hand, I already know shipping is going to hurt, and I like to stick to my budget.

Aw fuck, I was planning on getting this bag since I had no money for it during the preorder stages. Does anyone else know of any bags besides Wego that has the depth to put plushes in like these?

>>9643861
There's a lot of factors for me. How often does it come up for sale? Is it a grail item? Is the deal too good to be true? How much would I be able to spare from my daily necessities if I really want this? If it's a grail item, it's an automatic yes. Everything else I usually debate over, but most of the time if the deal is pretty solid an it's only a few dollars over the budget, I'd get it since I usually have a bit of extra money on the side in case of emergencies.

Pick one.

But in all seriousness, if it's a super rare item for a good price, just go for it and deduct the overspending from your next paycheck allowance. I removed the plastic beads on mine by using a seam ripper to pick apart all of the layers of the front of the bag, removed the beads, and then hand sewed it back together. I'd recommend using embroidery floss and a thimble because pushing that needle through all those layers hurts. Use a curved needle if you have one. That'll make it way easier.

>> No.9645131

>>9643827
Removing the silver patch, even with a seam ripper, will leave some ugly holes in the vinyl. You can use a seam ripper to rip out the entire front layer of the vinyl and then hand-sew your bag back together. Or you could just make a character rosette to go over the patch. That would be way easier.

I've had a figure on my bag for a while, sewn down to the insert so it wouldn't move about. I've removed it recently because I noticed a bit of the character's hair was getting slighlty bent+lost a smidge of color prolly from probably having bumped against something (the vinyl was scratched on the area). I had keychains dangling about near it too so I took it out after a while (no damage from that tho). It's nothing bad and noticeable in the end but I'd be extra careful if i were to do it again. If you intend to go for it, make sure to keep them apart like >>9645905 said to avoid paint transfers and make sure the window is pretty deep to avoid the issue I had. They make rigid card sleeves, two types are mentioned in the FAQ: toploaders and card savers. You can glue pinbacks to em, and the cardsavers have a little lip at the top which you could easily punch a hole through to hang them with. Hi! So I cut out the old ribbon (anywhere is fine) and then I measured out the new ribbon against the old, giving about 2.5 extra inches to be safe. At first I tried to just thread it through, but it’s extremely hard to borderline impossible. So I had to make a small cut inside of the bag in order to reach the holes from the other side. Then I was easily able to lace my new ribbon through and tie both ends together. Pic related is the inside of my bag now. I have to be careful to not drop small items into the slits, otherwise they could be easily lost.

Thank you! And yes, unfortunately the color will get worn off. Please feel free to critique + comment esp on my obviously bootleg bags but here's an improvement on my Lance bag. Made the rosette and rose in the corner so I'm pretty happy with it as is but I got more merch I need to add now.

Next project is Hibiki (Im@s) and then Tokoyami, but I'm strugging on what color base to get. Torn between black with a backing or doing a full red bag. Most of the merch I've accumulated so far is split between the UA uniform and the training uniform, so I dont have any idea what color to use. Because I made a sweeping generalization about the industry in regards to a vague discussion post? Pokemon, Yuri on Ice, or other massive franchises won't even notice the few hundred dollars it takes to build an itabag. If someone likes fan art and wants to buy it and put it in their bag, there's no reason not to. I don't think that makes their bag less good than any other.

I personally really like bags with nice aesthetics, additional flourishes, and well thought out layouts, and value that as opposed to the origins or dollar value attached to the merchandise. Itabags are a personal preference game, though, and if someone is happiest when they manage to snag ten of their pricey official holy grail that's awesome, too. How many times to we have to talk about the fact that fan merch isn't necessarily less expensive than official merchandise, and that it's not a "cheap" way out because it's not cheaper. I have a fan merch bag - for a character with exactly one piece of official merch, which I do own, so don't come for my head - and it's easily a $500 bag. Even in this hobby that's not considered cheap or subpar.

No one is saying make your bag empty and crappy, no one is saying that bootleg heart bags look better than higher quality base bags. The only comment was that fan art merchandise is not evil, and doesn't make a bag worse for it's inclusion, and that collecting merch that is extremely expensive is a matter of preference. We're really arguing over this again? Fanmerch is just as expensive, if not, more expensive sometimes. Fanmade =/= cheap.

Now if you're buying bootleg/fanmade BECAUSE you're too cheap to buy real merch, that's completely different. Half of the time those are the FB tier bags that have 10+ series thrown into a knockoff bag just so people can jump onto the itabag bandwagon.

>> No.9655716

Not if you live somewhere with an abundance of fanartists who make merch. Fanmerch is definitely cheaper then because you wouldn't have to deal with proxy fees, shipping fees within and from Japan, consolidation fees, etc.

>> No.9655737

>>9655716
This is incredibly subjective. Fan merch often has a higher base cost.

I was able to import about 25 pieces of official merchandise for about $60, including all fees. Many of them were second hand for only about ¥100. My fan charms of the same character all cost at least $8, even purchased in person. Most were closer to $10-12.

It depends on the character. The series. The shopping service. The specific merchandise in question. New or used, fads, luck of the draw, etc.

Fan merch does not mean cheap.
Official goods does not mean expensive.
Fan merch does not mean expensive.
Official goods does not mean cheap.

Arguing over price is only there to obscure the fact that people don't like fan merchandise and think it's lesser than official goods because it's an unlicensed product, and the marketing department that owns the IP isn't getting their cut. That's it. That's the only legitimate reason here.

I don't have the money or the time to make that many bags that I'm truly happy with, so I have to prioritize only the husbando I really love. But I can't fault someone else who DOES have that income and time. It's a hobby about making bags to be worn, I'm not going to get upset over a person who treats them like fashion accessories. It's a different mindset from hard core baggers, but understandable in a main stream context.

Making itabags specifically to wear to cons is treating them like fashion accessories?

Yes? Making an accessory to wear to an event to complete their 'look' of being a weeb who loves a specific FOTM show is a very specific kind of fashion accessory, but that's basically what it is. They want to wear a trendy bag for it to be seen and for people to see them a certain way, that's what fashion is.

A lot of baggers just make one as something special to use at conventions because they don't feel comfortable taking it around all the time or it clashes with their fashion sense. But then again, a lot of other baggers (myself included) use an itabag as their daily bag or purse. And I'm sure there's all sorts of grey area between those two extremes, so it's up to you!

It also depends on what the bag is and how extreme it is. A few rare charms of something common like Pikachu or Rilakkuma isn't going to throw folks off that much, compared to a HYPERBAG with 27 identical Kotori straps.

Itabags are nice because you can tailor it to your powerlevel, and it doesn't even have to be anime. I've seen sportsbags, planet themed bags, and even one based on olympic pins. At that point it may not be an itabag but it was certainly styled like one coincidentally if nothing else. It is at the core, fandom fashion.

Pic related, I'm going to make an ita bag for CYaRon but I don't know how to find a middle ground between pink, orange, and blue. Most of their merch together is on an orange background. I want to avoid white for obvious reasons. I'm thinking about just going for pink (which is the image color of best girl anyway).

I'm not very well versed in color matching but perhaps grey would be a good middle ground? It's a good neutral and would work with the color of the uniforms. A+ for picking best subunit.

that's what I get for not reading the thread lol. Thank you for confirming

Did you use the same resin the blog suggested? I want to make sure to use a resin that doesn't yellow but I live in Canada so this one is hard to come by or shipping is expensive

Raichu itabagger here.
I finally decided and ordered the purple ita bag that I has asked about in the last thread.

Now I have to wait over a month for the bag to arrive and I couldn't wait to put together a layout. Apologies for all the fanmerch if that's something that bothers you. All the items in here I own or it's on it's way to me and I've made all the items to scale for the backpack insert.

I was hoping to get some feedback on the layout. Does it look too spread out? I'm so unsure of myself since this is my first bag. I appreciate any help.

Here's a reference to the bag if that helps: https://img0.etsystatic.com/191/1/6774806/il_570xN.1249332180_4bka.jpg

oh, I forgot to mention how I determined my layout.

I'm having a hard time finding OG Raichu things so I ended up putting any merch of that version in a diagonal from top left to bottom right, and then filling out the rest with the Alola Raichu since I have more of it

Go for a pastel purple or something like gray. That way you can incorporate all the colors without washing out.

Groaner & Saturn from Supermansion! I decided to go with the dark purple after all, and this is my basic idea, + probably regular round buttons to fill the left over space depending on how much it is.

Do these people not understand the concept of a 'one absolute fav. character'? You can't have ELEVEN husbandos/waifus. I mean you can love a zillion different characters, but then that character isn't your husbando/waifu, they are just part of a harem.

This is the card heaviest bag I have saved. I've also got a wip with a ton of cards for my husbando, since they're most of his official merch. I'm also working with some pokemon cards as well, and I'm planning on overlapping them/putting other merch in front of the text halves.

>>9659644
>>9659813
Do you mean MORE examples? Because the whole start of the thread has a lot of plush-heavy bags already.

>>9660992
Different people use the term husbando differently anon. For some folks its their one and only, and for others its just any anime dude they find attractive. I'm firmly in the first camp, but I'm not going to get assblasted by people doing the latter.

Sooooooo I started an itabag for Sheryl Nome. But I hate how small these bags are, so I bought a bigger one, which means that I had to buy more merch to fill it, and in the process I realized I should be thanking the gods that Macross shit is so cheap.

But for V1 of the bag, this isn't total hot garbage, right?

No, I've been here for over a year, and I know that the girl who handles most of the Surugaya group orders is a massive multibagger. While I could do the orders myself, I'd rather pay the higher shipping fees and save myself the trouble, and I'm happy she's a part of the community.

there's some but good luck finding it.

I guess what I meant by it is it would be nice for the layered/clutter style bag. I also think adding a background fabric in blue or something would look good against all the yellow in the hair.

I actually got another one of those shikishi in my most recent order of supplies from mandarake (cause they're legit like a dollar and they take up space and are gorgeous). I got one that matches one of the wedding dress keychains hanging in the center. A frame or something like that is a great idea! I'll have to go ruminate on that in the scrapbooking section at michaels.

thank you! I'm glad it seems to be working out.
I hope the purple the etsy seller provided is accurate too, the items I put in are relatively accurate. I'm nervous to see how all the clear acrylic keychains will look on the purple though.

OMG please update as you go along! as mentioned by >>9661525 i have a Ranka bag and i'm so happy to see a Sheryl bag (I was considering one of my own since I got a lot of sheryl merch alongside some of my Ranka merch). I also started with a heart bag and quickly upgraded to a larger one (one of the massive window totes).
I agree so hard about Macross merch prices, i've gotten so much shit for way cheap, including the majority of my Ranka figures (barring a few I bought to have in-box)

>> No.9662213

I totally agree, my statue collection started BECAUSE the ichiban kuji prize statues were so fucking cheap. I just bought a whole new strap set of Sheryl straps specifically for this bag (and also because there was one of Sheryl dressed as Sivil??? I don't get the reasoning but she's my favorite screaming space waifu so I'll take it) and I'm slowly acquiring other things via mandarake and Y!J. When that other anon suggested canbadgi I commissioned a buddy with a heart-shaped button maker to run off some buttons too.

Between this and Uta Macross my life has just become 100% Deculture.

You can always washi tape the backs of the charms to make them pop more. Also, where have you been looking for OG raichu merch? Because there's a fair bit out there. Have you been checking any japanese sites at all?

I've been looking for official merch on Mandrake, eBay, and a pokemon store middleman for new things coming out of the pokemon centre stores. I haven't tried other middleman/proxy places or YJapan, etc.

I haven't been able to find much on eBay maybe due to the fact that I'm in Canada? In the collectibles section for me it's 99% cards or plushies. I have most of my favourite cards and plush already, but I'm not sure if I'd want them in my itabag haha.
