I'm a guy who goes to conventions and likes seeing girls in skimpy outfits. If we don't collectively make it a safe place for them to do so, then we won't see as many.

Having a guy in your group sadly the only way I know to keep creepers away. I went to a con with a group and we spent all Friday and most Saturday morning together. Saturday evening there was a panel that two of the girls wanted to go to while the rest of us wanted to do a different panel. We part ways and go to our panels. When we group up again to go get something to eat they have 3 creeper stories and say they got hit on at least a dozen times. This is in the time span of one hour and for the majority of that they were in a panel! And just so you know, they we're cosplaying as Madoka characters, so not even overly sexualized cosplay.

I literally said I got ignored when complaining about creepers because my body isn't considered lewd enough. Multiple times in and out of cosplay. Why would I want that apply to wearing clothes as well? You can be right for all the wrong reasons. I'm a male and I find the female body attractive. Deal with it. That doesn't mean that women are nothing more than sexual objects or that I don't treat them like people. I've been going to cons for over 10 years now, most of which I have roomed with both men and women who cosplay. I can tell you from experience that some guys will creep on anything. Flat chest, ugly face, fat, underage you name it. As for me, I feel responsible for making sure everyone in my group has a good time and stays safe. And yes, I have had to get stern with some men in my group who acted inappropriately at cons. They don't room with us again if they cause any incidents.

For smaller creep you have to be super cold when you speak to them, like a police officer or something ( at least it worked on creeps that my friends meet )

( little creep story ) : In my really small local con ( less than 5000 visitors in 2 day ), there where an aera with a "maid" ( it's was more of a lolita one ) cafe and a place where peoples can eat their food. I wanted to go to this area but a girl stopped me and my friend ( who is the cousin of an important con staff). We asked why and she said to my friend that there where a creepy old man who started to creep on the girls, touching they cleavage jewelry and a lot of other weird shit ). I saw the dude and he was a really normal old man. Even old people are a danger at con now .

In my Criminal Psychology course we did go over how in many sex crimes the criminal will pick a victim that they think no one will believe. Hell, we recently had an incident near me where a high school student raped 5 girls before anything happened. He picked his targets well. He was an honor student that played sports and the girls were all from broken homes and did drugs. Most rapists purposely don't pick the prettiest girls to rape for this exact reason. So I guess it's my bad for believing the world is a better place than it really is.

Reminds me of when I was talking to another cosplayer online where she said when she was overweight she was fat shamed at conventions. Then she lost weight and got slut shamed at conventions. She listed a long list of slurs that she said people shouted at her. My immediate response was "What convention are you going to that people yell all these insults at you and aren't getting kicked out?" Her response was to the effect of "just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen." But I've seen it happen and I've seen people kicked out of conventions for doing it.

I have a friend who is head of security for a 15k+ anime con. Funny story from that con, there was a guy who had his friend take pictures of him with cosplayers and would grab their ass when the picture was being taken. Security filmed him doing it and it turns out the girl they caught him groping was 16 when the dude was 20. He got turned over to the police for sexually assaulting a minor. Ended up on the sex offender registry and everything. Since then there hasn't been too much problem with gropers at that con.

Which goes back to my original question, what cons are you going to where con security is ignoring this kind of behavior? I really want to know!

I cosplayed as ryuko (syncronized) and yes I can confirm having a guy with you is the best way to repel creepers. Thankfully I never had any really bad experiences but I still sold it off quite quickly.
Preventing is the best way, no matter what you do against it afterwards it still happened and it will always creep through your mind several years after.

Texas. Some are actually defunct now. I've gone to San Japan once and was fine, great even despite so many more people. But their staff wasn't "tested" the same way. Only had one incident that was partially my fault and not even really an incident.

Only Texas con I've been to is A-Kon and I also know that they kicked out more than one creeper this year. Smaller cons tend to have shitty security because they don't expect anything to happen. Biggers cons tend to hire and pay professional security because they know things are going to happen. Most congoers I talked to actually were happy with the way security and Ft Worth police treated con goers. Some people were concerned with how many cops were around the water garden and con center, but they made it quite clear that they were there to protect us, not to ruin our fun.

Texas though, man Texas. Despite having some of the biggest cons in the region, it's feuding cons central. Even if you split up the Dallas/Ft Worth and Houston regions, they still have an exorbitant amount of anime cons every year and most of them made by people who are unhappy with how the big ones are ran. Usually the con heads pick their friends to fill key staff positions and you end up with people that just don't give a fuck in key roles. My friends from the area talk about cons that the heads just invite people that they want to meet, or try to tailor the con to their personal interests. Not to mention all the cons that screw over AA vendors by overestimating attendance and thus overcharging for table space or ones where the cosplay GOH list is just people that they know. Yeah small cons can be inner circle drama central. And I don't even live near Texas anymore!

Because con security is a part of how a con is operated. How they respond to risks and threats is an integral part of dealing with the issue. If a con doesn't take reports seriously, they become a safe haven for the gropers and creepers. The guy in Florida made his con a safe haven for sexual predators. I've been to several and not only sticking to cons within four hours either. The only odd one out in my experiences San Japan but again I've only been once and only cosplayed one day there due to physical health problems. San Japan is definitely the best run in Texas but the cons I went to weren't any worse than any other con. Just too small to compete with bigger ones nearby bringing in Japanese guests.

Other people got their "justice" and I've seen things like wallets getting returned, but all it takes is one person to do it and one person to not believe it. No public place with thousands of people is ever really a safe haven.
