Yeah, that convention area sucks ass. There's not even a starbucks or any good coffee place within walking distance. The only food is overpriced hotel garbage.

I suggest looking into the VTA Light Rail. I'm going to be riding it in from near downtown San Jose and the trip takes about 20-25 minutes. There's some other food options along the light rail route without going too far, still no cafes but there's some booze and cheap food options. If you wanna ride further you can go north to Mountain View which has a billion food options or you can ride south to San Jose downtown or Japantown which has uh, some. Japantown is about a 6 block walk off of the Light Rail route.

Here's some fare info: http://www.vta.org/getting-around/fares The best value is the day pass but you need a Clipper Card for that and it's not super easy for out-of-towners to get one conveniently. $2 for 2 hours tho means you can ride it one way and grab your food then catch it back on the same ticket without having to pay again as long as it's in the two hour window.

You can also download some food apps like Grubhub and Doordash for food delivery in that area, there's usually a decent amount of options.

I personally stopped going to Yaoicon on account of how much they exploit their bishi staff. A mid tier bishi can pull in triple digits during the auction and thats not counting funds they raise for bingo and calendar sales. Yet they only get badges for working 20+ hours and are not even compensated for rooms.

I understand staff not getting rooms but if thse people actually pull in cash and have an exact financial amount then I think the con should at least do more for them

There are more food choices around than I think most people realize, I've been to most of them after attending several cons at SCCC over the years.

1) 10 minute walk away and that's being generous on waiting for the street light in front of the Hyatt. Gas station minimart, Taco Bell, Indian food, Chinese, Togos

2) Hyatt has Tosca which is okay depending on their specials that night, the bar, sushi bar, and to-go grab food, Hilton across the street has a restaurant as well

3) Short walk from con. David's is standard mid-range American restaurant food

4) 10 min walk. Bourbon Steak, more expensive and only open Mon-Fri 5-9pm

5) 1 stop away on lightrail. Viet, American, Thai, Mexican, chicken&waffles, Carl's Jr.

Area 5 really is the best, the prices are all low and moderate since they generally rely on office workers on weekdays and neighborhood residents on weekends. Several of the places will close early though if they aren't getting business.

Purple line is the light rail line from SCCC to 5

Also you can hop on and hop off lightrail, they rarely ever check for tickets and the likelihood being caught from 1 stop to 1 stop is super low.

Why are so many fujoshi lesbian? It makes no sense.

My theory: Most yaoi characters are written by women and behave more like women, and unless you read bara (which is for men anyway) most of them look more androgynous or femme than like men. It becomes more of a self insert fantasy than yuri which is often done by/for straight men. Don't know how true that is but it's my guess.

I used to go to yaoi con years ago but the exploitation mentioned by previous anon is a major reason I don't go anymore. The other reason is because they try to advertise themselves as a "progressive" event lately while profiting off a questionable fetish based around stereotypes. If you're a sleazy fetish con, own it. Don't pretend you're doing positive things for LGBT people while auctioning off men and having spanking orgies.

The bishi thing is odd. There's a ton of guys who are happy to a part of the bishi staff. They know what happens and how they can make money or not. If they are still happy to volunteer, isn't it up to them to decide if they feel exploited?

I'm not going to defend the system as I agree the bishi deserve rooms at least, but if they enjoy doing it I can't really hate the con itself.

There's still other things to enjoy besides the whole bishi thing.

From what I have seen, fujoshi are divided into a couple of categories that come with their own stereotypes.

The cringe. They ship based entirely on sex (guy/guy and girl/girl). Really enjoy the sex. Most of them don't seem to be in a stable relationship, and tend to be young. They'll grow out of it.

The ones who actually create fan works. They usually start out as cringy as the tumblr weebs but if they keep working, you can see a maturity that develops in their work. The best. Ship anything and everything out of love for the media. Doesn't care about endgame. Russian fujo meetups are terrifying, but also ridiculously fun. Tend to be fashionable.

Overall, fujo are people, which means they're going to be as diverse as they come. Some will date transgender people, some will not. Some bring home the bacon, others are still in school. That's just the way it works.

Hey, fujo lesbian here (and yes, I have been with women in real life) to hopefully shed a little light on this from my individual perspective.

As a child, female characters were still being written as one-note love interests or girly-girls whose interests were centered on themselves and fashion/boys/whatever and you had to seriously hunt for girls who did not slot into these tropes. This made for a pretty dull character compared to the plethora of male characters who were focused on saving the world and kicking ass and having complex feelings about their male rivals and friends. Couple that with an absolute nightmare world of sex education - girls never learning about how to pleasure themselves, female sexuality being held up as a dirty thing to only think about after marriage, girls being told they never get horny etc - and you have a formula for guy characters = interesting, complicated, sexual and girl characters = shallow, boring, nonsexual/pure.

Real life girls are of course sexual and want outlets for it, but I found myself alienated by most female characters and completely uninterested in imagining their romantic escapades. Plus male sexuality was so broadly discussed and you could easily find magazine articles about how good sex felt for men and how to do things to please a man (while similar feelings for women were completely ignored) that relating to male sexuality and pleasure was simply easier and allowed the interesting and complex characters to become sexual outlets as well.

There are more things I could go into (like how yaoi allows girls who lack good body image to have porn where they aren't assumed to "project") but this post is tl;dr already so hopefully that's enough for you to get an idea.

tl;dr fictional men are relatable/attractive on an intellectual/sexual level because they're characters designed to be related to. I'm cosplaying from two not to well known series and also from a pretty popular one. It's been a while since I've cosplayed but I'm really excited to premiere these cosplays.

I expect a lot of YOI and Voltron, but I hope to see more obscure or older cosplay. It's the one con my partner and I get to gay it up.

I know there are cosplay photoshoots being scheduled, but haven't seen anything I'm cosplaying from.

I'm hoping to have my new ita bag finished by con, but we will see.

No, seme/uke stuff is not that popular with men, in my opinion. Even though I noted they are some of my best customers, there are still very few of them. I think they are showing up more lately because a lot of western artists do pop culture stuff (movies and tv shows) in addition to anime, which results in generally more masculine men in the AA since they are based on hot actors, so I think that's more the aesthetic that gay men enjoy. Plus, at least for awhile, things were becoming more and more liberal so maybe men who secretly preferred soft boys and romance felt more comfortable coming out about it. It doesn't matter what the end result is. Attendees of this con expected to be able to come in and make asses of themselves in an enclosed space, and suddenly find out that there's going to be a camera and a bunch of regular people there filming them. Of course that's going to make people uncomfortable regardless of the end result and regardless of whether it's technically legal or not.

The smart thing would be to designate an area in which they could film, let attendees choose whether they enter that area or not. There will be plenty of people who are excited about participating in this, and those that aren't can completely and easily avoid it.

Also have you ever even been to Y-Con? It's fucking tiny and they confirmed that Vice will be filming in both the Vendor Hall and the Artist Alley, as well as some of the bigger panels/events. At a bigger con like Fanime or AX, you're less likely to be spotted in a general pan/crowd shot but at Y-Con?? It'll be much easier to pick out faces in sparse crowds.

And uh - you're acting as if only office/government employees would be at risk for this when you can't account for the personal biases/discrimination of peoples' employers. Think about it this way though, would you want it advertised to your friends, family, and boss that you were at s porn con? It's really sad to see how many people are dropping, not that I blame them at all. I won't sign a waiver, but I'm out to my family and work, so I have a lot less to lose than some people. With how much public backlash there's been, I wonder if VICE will be able to find anyone at all to interview.

It sounds like the bishies working for the con heard about it earlier than we did and were under the impression that it was going to focus on them, and they were obviously up for it. Personally I feel that if they aren't going to cancel, I'd rather have a few people who are up for it who distract the cameras from everyone else who isn't, so I'm not going to talk shit about anyone who goes for it. In the end we all lose anyway when they cut it to make us look like wacky losers.

Bishies get worked to the bone, but it's a really rewarding experience for us even without much compensation.
Went in 2014, and Bishies only actually get compensated for the following year's con. So even if you work 20+ hours, you still have to pay.
What sucks is that if you miss a year, you have to pay the next time you come.
Bonus is that it filters out tons of fuckbois who just want to get laid and given a free con.

They announced it four days before the con, the attendees are hardly to blame for flipping out when there was pretty much no time to sit and wait for updates. A lot of hotel and flight cancellations require at least a few days advanced notice for full refunds.

Also if you think people are being unreasonable for pitching a fit about potentially getting outed on television either as a queer person or interested in queer porn then you must live a nice privileged life. Good for you.

How was it last year in terms of main event turnout

For all the organizational failings of Yaoicon, I think it really is still driven by the community in having a good time.

I enjoyed myself all weekend and met up with multiple people from /cgl/ so all in all worth it for me. It just would have been even better if the con were better organized and had at least tweaked some things.

Some of the bishies were upset he was actually let into the auction, given his entire talent was "sing happy birthday in a different language, and translate lines for people."
No costume, no prep work, no nothing.

Usually he's better and sells for a lot, so they let him in and axed other potential bishies, but it was the weakest act and he hella undersold what they expected.

It's what happened to Yuricon. Nothing went "wrong" with the convention, but they still shut it down, because people viewed it as a shady practice.

I think a lot of the staff and bishies would actually be down for something like that, but I realistically don't think it'd be smooth sailing.

First time attendee, was only able to go on Friday, but I had a great time and will definitely get time off for the whole weekend next year. The atmosphere was really chill, and had probably the friendliest people I've encountered at a convention in years.
I have no previous Yaoicons to compare it to, but a lot of artists I like were in the AA, the main event I attended was... somehow less cringey than I was expecting. Dealer's room was laughably tiny, but that's my only real complaint.

I agree they could have a decent con if they had someone in charge of programming that knew what they were doing.

There's a lot of potential. And with it so far from San Fran, there isn't much to do around outside the con. Use this a chance to have strong internal programming.

That people can get away with 18+ content at this con, like at the cosplay contest that they can't do anywhere else. But even then, when it's back-to-back with even bigger events like bingo or the auction, they'd rather just line up for those instead.

We kinda discussed spacing them out some, and running the cosplay contest earlier in the day by 1-2 hours, as well as advertising it more.

...anon were you not at any of the panels that were standing room only? The AA was so full the first day they limited the number of people inside at a time and the manga library was full often as well. There was certainly demand for programming and not all the space in the hotel was used either.
