I found this lolita in the wild on the new episode of Project Runway and thought it was cool seeing a lolita in mainstream media. She's cutting fabric at Mood.

Gulls, where do you get your accessories? I'm primarily a gothic lolita and while I have no problem buying main pieces and blouses from brands, I often feel like their accessories and headwear are overpriced for the quality. Did anyone else order this brown Sweet Dreamer witch hat?

My SS just sent me a photo and the brown is way off. Left is what I ordered, right is a shopped approximation of what my SS received. I haven't been in it too long, but I got in "late" in terms of age. I think a big issue with Lolita is the social media aspect can overwhelm and over-influence people. Like, having a community is great, but I keep seeing 20-year olds getting way, way too caught up in it and the only way for them to re-balance things is to totally leave the fashion cold turkey.
For me, I think what helps is I got through "buying phases" that have larger gaps then most people and in between there I re-connect with sort of my normie self.

I have the size 1, my bust is 85 cm.
It fits me very nicely, but despite the shirring going further than 88cm, I wouldn't go over 88 for the size 1 cause it definitely won't fit nicely if you do. Even if you take the corset lacing out, I suspect.
Also, you need a small-ish waist, mine is 65cm and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is over 68cm.
The shirring seems to be more decorative than it is functional desu, and the corset lacing ribbon is quite short which is also an indication they didn't add the shirring so it fits larger sizes cause then the ribbon would be way too short.
Hope this was any help yo you anon.

I have the opposite problem. Keep trying to leave lolita but really nothing beats quality for price like secondhand IW, especially the plainer pieces that lolitas tend to overlook. Even saved a few of my less OTT AP dresses to wear on weekends because pockets. Though I guess I wasn't someone who tried to lolify everything into kawaii, I tended more towards wearing my burando in non-lolita ways. Halter tops with my IW skirts and cardigans with my AP jsks without petticoats kinda stuff.

pretty much. i used to have somewhat of an obsession of lolita and it dictated everything. i haven't left lolita and i don't want to, but it took me a while to give myself space for other interests and ways of dressing. in a way, lolita, what i used to define as "being myself," was not allowing me to be myself. it's definitely a part of me, a pretty definitive part, but it's not the center of my life now.

that happens to a lot of young people though who tend to hyperfocus on an interest.

Personally, that's how I do it:
- Turn the dress inside out so the delicate chiffon is inside
- But it in a clothing bag to avoid snags
- wash on delicate cycle on low temperature (like 30°) and for short time (I think I use the 45 min setting)
- then air dry on a hanger

All of my dresses came out just fine without a single snag, bleeding colors or faded prints. Though, you need to remember the print on AP's chiffon is usually not very vibrant in the first place. So when it comes out of the washing machine you might think "Hmm, did the print fade?", but you probably just remember it more vibrant than it was.
I'm always a tad dissapointed how these chiffon prints are less vibrant than other prints. This was the main reason I didn't get Halloween Treats.

Natural fabrics have a higher tendency towards static cling. Polyester fabric, especially fabric made specifically for lining, does not. That's the reason they use it. Lining fabric is also often fray proof, which helps with making thin chiffon dresses.

Learned this on my first all-cotton skirt. Thought it would be more breathable with cotton in cotton. The skirt folded itself up into pretzel shapes all day long. Finally put it in a donation bin and avoided cotton lining ever since.

Does anyone wear sweet lolita to work?
I see casual ALL THE TIME so I'm asking specifically about SWEET. My work has a very casual dress code but I feel like if I turned up in an AP print they might suddenly need to re-clarify what's considered as "casual".

I've worn jsk's with cardigans over them and printed tights etc. before to work and even a tardis dress and a wonder woman print but they were all still muted colours like navy, white, brown and black. Pink, yellow, purple I worry about attracting too much attention despite being the same clothing styles.

i feel some of this. I've worn a lot of alternative fashion over the years, but the amount of attention that comes with it really drags me down. I started a new job a couple years ago that pays much better than anything I've had before, so I have so much more money to spend on niche fashion, but the job is so exhausting that it's easier to wear boring things on the weekends just so I get left alone. I've been lucky to have received almost entirely positive or curious reactions and have never been harassed or bullied for altfashion, so that's not really a concern, but it's just so tiresome.

Cotton had more vivid colors initially because it takes dye better than polyester. Polyester just holds up better over time and washing than cotton. So I'm guessing your cotton pieces are older and faded.

That sounds less like static cling and more like an extremely poor choice for lining material. You do know that natural fiber lining fabrics exist, right? Bemberg rayon is a thing, and my skirts and dresses lined in it sit wonderfully and are breathable.

I actually agree. there are some trends that I think will lead to more old school Moitie styling becoming popular again (layered legwear, chunky platform heels, etc). Those trends, plus the influx of plaid and VW in japanese snaps also makes me think punk will start to exist again, but in a cleaner more modern way.

On the other end of the spectrum, I've taken to mentally classifying the OTT lace monster trend "neo-hime" and it's starting to actually take on some of those characteristics. blouseless, legwearless coords dripping in lace are cropping up more, the hair is getting taller and curlier to account for the multicolored wedding dresses, and I've seen a few open toed heels pop up. I'm waiting for someone to throw on a tiara and embrace what that genre of coord has become.

Classic-aristo will also get even bigger (and will just be called lolita in Japan b/c unnecessary labels are unnecessary)

Moitie's sizing and secondhand prices are a bit of a deterrent. Some gulls pick up old school sweet because a decades-old jsk is typically 3k yen.

Sizing not because it's small, but Moitie lists everything at 82cm bust despite some dresses fitting smaller and other fitting larger. One of the classic brands did put out real leather shoes, made in Japan, a long time ago. Might still be an entry in egl that talks about it. iirc the shoes were more than double the price of the pleather shoes, not many girls bought them, and eventually the brand stopped releasing real leather shoes because not many girls bought them. Same story with fake fur, some of the older brand items did use real fur, but some Western lolitas found this problematic because fur trade and all that. I'm not sure if the brand stopped using real fur or people have just stopped fussing over them.

Cotton vs polyester is simply trends. Old school is pretty exclusively cotton lace on cotton twill fabric, but recent trends are all about being light and airy and floaty and layers of frothy magic rather than layers of solid cotton fabric. Maybe it will come back once we get tired of looking at dresses that are more air than thread.

Burando isn't actually high-fashion tier anyway. It really only costs about 2-3x more than a comparable normie brand, and most of that extra pricing goes straight into the skirt being 2-3x wider than what mainstream fashion brands produce, and having 2-3x more lace and trim than what mainstream fashion brands normally throw on their dresses. There's just really not that much money left over after that, the last time I saw much nicer lining was on dresses that cost $500 and above.

As someone who wears both lolita and what we class as 'aristocrat', to me the trend for tea length dresses look more lolita than anything anyway because of how they're styled in nearly all cases. A full length dress does not maketh aristocrat. The sorts of things that Boz, or Moitie, occasionally things that some of the other brands put out, are closer to a hybrid style. It's all about the overall feel. Aristocrat, in its feminine version, usually leans more towards a much more minimalist level of ruffles and lace and overall fussiness.

No it isn't? I have some stuff that is literally 82cm max, some look like it is about 90 max. I've owned a lot of Moitie and agree. For example, Sleeping Garden JSK with the stiff cotton bodice does not give the way the polyester of Holy Stained Glass and Royal Gate do. Another frustrating thing about buying new Moitie is the poor stock photos of just the front of the dress. One example is stained glass (under bust with a chiffon overlay ) to rose cross jsk (under bust but polyester only) for example. Similar cut, the former has lace detailing and a side zipper as difference. The bust in this case means less but the waist is different enough. In general I'm in the cusp between fitting into non shirred and not so I don't have an easy go to besides seeing what others do.

The ones with bust only shirring are more plain so harder to compare. I also have ones that are full shirring but clearly some are more accommodating than others. Fabric and age are what I think is the main factors but again you won't know unless you see it irl.

Sounds good toto me! I'll begin archiving everything i can from daily lolita when i get home from the hospital and give you guys a flickr link so you can have an idea on how it'll look and tell me if you want something else.
LJ days are dear to me, so being able to save some of it would be my pleasure

Thank you for doing this, anon. Our historian lolitas are so important. I always wish anyone cared about the pre-LJ days to archive that. It would've made the old school community so happy.

Archive anon here, working on archiving dl outfits on flickr rn.
I'm keeping one picture per outfit and i'll be making a single file for everything before 2007 because there was barely any post at all

no, because being a perma-ita is kind of rare and many people progress and get better at coording.
I also try not to shoot people down before they even take off so...I'd wait to judge the actual coord.

I disagree. the earlier stuff had much better construction and quality, but that's because she had a good, stable factory. Then the factory owner had some sort of shady issue and packed up and run in the middle of the night. She found out after the fact and lost all her backup files when the factory owner dipped, and then her original design files when her computer caught on fire? It's kind of tragic because I believe Angel of Music was the last series to get made by that factory.

I was a part of the res for the Starlight series and I remember she was trying out a new factory for that. They messed up and made all the dresses twice as large as the measurements called for. it sucked because, even after sending the batch back for fixing, when I got mine it was still too big and I had to sell it.
It's tough because if she took a break to find and test a new factory (delaying current series indefinitely) she'd have risked losing the momentum and name she built on previous releases.
I do wish she'd release some well-constructed solids with nice lace again, but she'd probably have to make them all herself for them to be really nice.

Western indie brands don't seem as ambitious. they kind of make what they can, when they want, and then it's up to luck and a good rep if people remember you/like your stuff well enough to stalk you for new releases.
it's a way better practice to have the brand's desire to produce and the market's desire to buy meet in the middle. But I guess that only applies for people who want to serve an international market.

yes. it's always nice to have worn photos of older pieces to look at.
maybe clear milanoo disasters can be skipped or go in a separate album, replicas too?

maybe i could do that then, just put milanoo/handmade itas, not even or barely lolita outfits and bad replicas in a folder.

You're reaching anon. Cgl has always been a blue board, but you used to be able to post outward links to things that were on topic as long as you noted it was NSFW

Maybe you just sell super cheap shit that attracts itas in the first place. Expensive brand itas are pretty rare..
