Sketch the line, then paint within the line? Maybe it's because I'm used to painting for art, but this seems like the obvious answer to me. You should be able to get a pretty clean line if you take your time, have a steady hand, etc.

I'm planning on making skirts like in picture 1+2.
I do own a sewing machine, but no idea how I would sew skirts like that.
Do I just buy a base pleated skirt and cut out a part, then hem the ends? And if yes, how much would I have to cut out?
And what do I with the lining (pic4)?

I've started working on Weather Report and I have most parts figured out. Hat is patterened out and I have schematics for all the ornaments, just need to buy materials and make them.

I figure the best way to do the shoes is to take a cheap pair with low heels and rip them in half, glueing them back together through the soles of the base bodysuit.

Speaking of the bodysuit, that's where I start to have problems. I bought a Lycra bodysuit at an anon's recommendation and it's perfect size/fit but I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing the holes. My current plan is to measure them while I'm wearing the suit and mark them slightly smaller than I want. Take off the suit, cut the holes, and cut into their corners a bit, then fold in the flaps and make "hems" around them. Will this work?

I'll probably wear a compression shirt with shoulder and chest pads underneath so I'll probably just get one that's peach/skin-tone. But an alternative I've considered is sewing the "hem" edges to pieces of a more rigid fabric inside the suit.

You might want to do the holes as a reverse appliqué with some sort of nude fabric as the inner part. Both the added fabric and the method of cutting the holes after will add a large amount of stability https://www.patreon.com/posts/8101286 here is a pretty good tutorial. You should get a piece of similar fabric to practice the technique on though. You seem to be over complicating the shoepants. There is no real reason for you to take apart the shoes, you could just use the first method mentioned in this tutorial https://www.google.com/amp/silencedrowns.tumblr.com/post/43660547677/unfortunately-when-i-was-talking-earlier-about-a/amp

>> No.9623927

>>9623922
The reverse applique is the last technique I described, so that tutorial is actually super helpful.

For the shoes, I guess I was overcomplicating things because I wanted to make sure the entire bottom was out, and his shoepants tuck between the foot and bottom. I could just cut out the bottoms of the feet and find a way to secure the edges to the shoe.

a foam build is full foam, no worbla over it just paint immediately, with worbla would just be called a worbla build. Since worbla is too hard to shape in itself you always have a base under it, which is most commonly foam.

Posted this in a personal thread like a newfag so I'm going here instead my bad.

Hello /cgl/,

I'm a newfag but I'm starting cosplaying for the first time as Deku from My Hero Academia and I was in the need of help.

The costume looked pretty simple for the first cosplay that I'd do, I saw like a body suit, white gloves, red fanny pack and arm guards but I don't know where to start and how to make them look identical. The cowl (mask and hood) and the boots are my problem as well.

Any suggestions and links would be really great! I fit into small t-shirts and pants size is 29x30 (thought my body would fit the character and I love the show).

replying to some trying to help with styling a eat resistant wig where you apply heat with curling iron then wait for the curl to cool down - I have tried this method to no effect - in some curls trialling this method they have actually straightened. The curls I have gotten are very loose and not at all the tight strands I was going for - I'm using a 25mm curler so they're not huge curls.

The wig is now starting to get very fluffy looking and starting to fry the strands. I opted for an Arda wig to try and avoid this issue because I'm aware their wigs are meant to be used for this kind of styling. I'm looking for a wig to cosplay Marco from Star vs.

This is probably really easy to answer but I don't have any male wig resources. All of the wigs I've ever looked at are female, so something as simple as this is giving me issues since the only wigs I find for men are either anime tier or professional everyday wear for the balding man tier with high markups caus they know men with low self esteem will spend the big bucks to hide their bald spots.

Even if someone has some good male wig resource, it'd be helpful for the future.

Rather than just tell you that wigs aren't gendered, let me explain why with a picture.

This is the inside of a wig, and every wig has these hooks and loops. There is also an elastic band on the side. If your head is abnormally large, just stuff the hooks inside and let the elastic do the work. Otherwise, find the loops that are a proper fit for your head. You can even cross the hooks to the farthest loop if you're sizing the wig for a child.

The pictured wig was purchased for $10 on amazon so not even a quality wig, but Arda's wigs look exactly the same inside.

No, it looks like garbage because cel-shading FX makeup can only look right from one angle in real life while in computer graphics they're generated dynamically.

Trying to apply a stylized graphical effect to the thing that it's stylizing just makes no sense in general. You don't need outlines in real life because outlines are a stylized representation of the contrast between forms. You don't need to imitate cel-shading because real life has its own lighting engine built in.

Arda if you live in the US for wigs. Something medium and just fuck its shit up with got2b hair glue. Horns out of some molding material (basic sculpting clay works) and attached to the wig with wires.

Contacts you're going to need to get a prescription for so you don't fuck up your eyes with the wrong size and then order from some Korean site. Don't cheap out on them or you'll also fuck up your eyes.

Okay, got a complicated one here. I'm looking at doing a costume that has a beetle shell and wings. We've done mockups of how to lift the outer shell, but there's just one major problem, my hands won't be available. While most of the more crazy logistics in this costume are handled, I REALLY want the shell to open and the wings to pop out. Once again, just a simple matter of pulling a rope, but hard to do when my hands aren't available to pull said rope. So I was wondering if anyone had a way that would be available via either a switch or something that could lift the shell on said costume.

Basically it'll work like an automatic umbrella, maybe it'll work out for you too.
Easiest way to figure it out is buying a simple automatic umbrella yourself and see how it works with the spring and all. You can probably modify two umbrellas to work for you.
Something with just the rope, a spring to release the rope and a clamp to hook the mechanism behind that you can unhook to release will also work

That's an interesting approach, but it still wouldn't solve the problem of having a remote way of pressing a button on my back. The problem is I know what I'm looking for I just have no idea what it's called. It's a device that you squeeze with your hand and it has a hose that connects to a metal rod in a casing that extends when the hand device is pressed. I don't know if it would be strong enough to lift the shell, but I need something like that because I could run the line through the sleeves and hide the rope/rod inside the costume. Currently it comes out the front under the head piece and there's some room in the front shell to house the mechanism.

I have done so many Google searches and the closest character I have came across was Bittersweet Lulu from LoL.

I saw a photo of this character I have in mind on Taobao and I can't think of them! I think they are a snow witch (the Chinese characters read snow witch or snow demon or snow wizard), something magical. The color scheme is mostly purple, but it might be blue/gray/black as well. Gloomy colors.

The hat is the exact same shape as Lulu's, but I think it's a big bigger and puffier. It has that same curve at the top though where it bends over.

I feel stupid for asking, but what spray paint would you recommend for materials that are going to flex/bend?
I made a tentacle out of 1/8" thick EVA foam and I need to paint it red. The tentacle is long so it will wobble and bend around at least a little bit. Brushing paint on is not an option since I need it to have a sleek/smooth appearance, I want to spray paint it. I intend to seal the foam with plastidip as my primer.
Options that I've read up on suggest to use liquid latex and to tint it whatever color you need. But I don't own a spray gun nor do I want to fork out $50 for a jug of liquid latex.

Personally, I'd just use foam floor mats to make any sort of armor. If you need to have some patterning in it, you can heat it up and stamp it with wire screens or whatever will suit you.
If you're set on your idea, just be careful since speaker grills are pretty thin as is. Bending them at sharp 90 degree angles may put too much stress and cause it to snap (I'm assuming you're talking about the metal wire frame speaker grills).

The reason plastidip wrinkles is because the wrinkle area wasn't sprayed directly in front t of the nozzle. And the most common case for this is angles, which is why people associate angles with wrinkles in plastidip.

So if the is a curve, you would need to have your hand follow the curves so that the nozzle is ALWAYS looking directly at a your cosplay surface. Does that make sense the way I explained it?

Do I really need to "properly" seal the pieces with modge podge + plastidip, or can I just heat seal > prime > paint > acrylic spray? The foam pieces are small and won't be flexing too much after they're initially shaped.

I think a bandanna would look cuter but I feel like the weird hats like the design on the bottom has would be more recognizable but they just look so weird. It's impossible to temporarily lighten dark hair, especially to that degree. You can't reduce saturation by adding pigment. You can only reduce saturation through subtracting pigment by bleaching.

Just use a wig, they're not expensive and styling isn't hard. All you need is a styrofoam head, pins, hair spray, and scissors. All of that will only be around $20, plus $30-40 for a wig which will last a really long time if you treat it right.

Can someone redpill me on hot glue?

Seriously, I have some questions about it. I went to the craft store yesterday and picked up a shitty dual-heat chinese glue gun. I assumed high and low heat had different types of glue with different melting points, but all the sticks they had were either "all-purpose" or low-heat. Neither the glue gun or the sticks had their heat output/melting points on their labels (just stickers saying "may reach 400F be careful dude" on both).

I bought the chinese gun and some sticks anyways because it was only around $10 total. So how do these sticks work? I've heard about low temp glue melting in hot conditions so I just wanted to be careful. Is there some kind of wizardry that causes hot glue to have a higher melting point when applied at a higher heat, or do I specifically have to find high-temperature sticks for that? Or is low temp glue melting from environmental heat even something I should worry about?

Also, will high-temperature hot glue melt EVA foam?

It doesnt matter, whatever you like most. Low heat will cause less dripping when it's on the stand and it won't hurt as fucking much when you mistake your finger for the material youre trying to glue, but the disadvantage is that the glue dries very quickly and you have to work quicker, and the gap is bigger since the glue isn't as fluid for a longer time.
When the glue is hotter you can press the gaps closer since it's very fluid, but well yeah the disadvantages are whatever i mentioned as advantages for low heat above.

Start out with hot, if you notice it is not suitable for your material or if you burn the shit out of your fingers too often, try low.

Multi-purpose glue will work for basically anything you need done on any regular project. You don't want to build a chair out of it, but for normal crafts it'll be fine.
Also yes, very hot glue will melt and synthetic foam really. I've seen some people say that you can work around it by holding the gun well above and letting the glue drop onto the surface so it's a bit cooler, but I've never tried it. I recommend an A/B cement for that sort of thing instead. It's a bit more labor intensive, but it's fairly cheap and you could build a chair with the stuff. It'll grip forever.

Using hot glue to attach fabric to foam should be fine for a hot environment. It seems that the way the glue is squished between the two materials makes it less likely to fall apart, partially because the foam will slightly melt onto the back of the fabric, sort of fusing them. Because of this, I'd say use the high heat setting, unless it starts to melt through one of your materials (but I don't think that's likely).

For something like foam to PVC, where there's not really any melt-fusing happening, you'd have to be more careful in hot environments. Even just walking outside in 90+ degree weather for a few minutes could cause that to weaken or fall apart.

The way I'll do it now is to just form the plexiglass to the inside of the helmet and try to gradually heat all of it up in the middle to that I can bulge it out a tad. You think that would work? Main problem with that would be the bodyfiller melting onto the plastic.

Next time I'll look into other plastics tho

Low temp hot glue melts at around 250 degrees Fahrenheit or 120 degrees Celsius. Hi temp is closer to 400/200 respectively. The high temp hot glue will melt the surface of your EVA foam, but that's the point and that's why you use it. It will literally fuse pieces together and the foam will tear before the hot glue does. Think of hi temp hot glue as EVA foam welding. It works best on pieces that have not been heat sealed and the high temp hot glue won't melt when you use your heat gun for shaping.

Multi-temp glue sticks won't start on fire at the higher setting, but will be more liquid and will melt again at lower temperatures. Find actual high temp glue sticks if you can. As others have said, high temp is around 400 degrees so be careful with your hands.

A couple of things I always do
>Reduce stitch length to as low as possible coming up on the corner, so that the stitching ends exactly at the point the two lines meet, not a micrometre past that (also makes for some really strong stitching)
>Seam allowances trimmed to 1/8inch around the corner
>Clip the corner as close to the stitching as possible (though it looks like you've done that already)
>When it's turned out, run thumb and index fingernails along the edge, almost like scratching it down from both sides

I've been working on a Monk cosplay from FFXIV for a good while now. It's probably out of my range since this is my first sewing project, but that's why I wanna do it. I'm currently stuck on the emblems on the middle and edges of the dress and pants. I don't have an embroidery machine, nor do I know anyone that has one. I was thinking of using fabric, but I am not sure how to include the holes or 'depth'. Should I use multiple layers of fabric or use another material to add the depth? Or would Iron on adhesive suffice?

You could try putting some sort of padding/batting underneath the appliqué part, then satin-stitch around the edges to really pull it down at the sides. Having holes in the pieces shouldn't be a problem if you stitch them down around the holes too.

Thankfully for me I already have a more angular face so I think with some practice I can probably be pretty convincing.

Also, could anyone recommend me some good products for the job? I was looking into getting the Nyx Pro contouring palette, but I heard that the darker shades were metallic and would likely need the shades to be matte as to avoid the fake tan/feminine look. (I have a fair completion, for reference)

a bit of a long post

im making a godzilla suit, but im running into trouble with 2 areas. I want this suit to be very flexible in the leg areas (the circled parts i find are the more problematic areas), andi feel like the foam i did on the rest of the suit will tear or restrict my movement whenever i want to do more extreme poses. how would i go about solving this? i had an idea to use cloth in those inner thigh sections to remedy it, but is that the best way to go (ive never worked with foam AND cloth together before on a single project)

my other problem is skin texture, im not sure how i go about that. a friend of mine suggested making the actual bumps out of foam and then using a sort of matte paint (he used this for his car paint job) that will make a thin layer of semi flexible rubbery substance. my othe ridea was to use very thin and flexible crafters foam and cut each scale individually and attach them all one by one

thanks

ah man i had a huge post but then i accidentally closed this tab

anyway you can use foam scales, or direclty cut it up a bit and then coat everything in liquid latex for the skin texture, gives an amazing result i think, got the idea from: http://www.instructables.com/id/Creating-a-Demon-Costume/
attached are shoes i made this way

use stretchy cloth such as jogging fabric and put loose individual scales on it, coat with latex the same way for the extreme poses

I recommend making the scales from upholstery foam since craft foam is very smooth and you will lose the nice bumpy skin feel from godzilla

>>9640834
what i do is put a small elastic band under the shoe attached to the shoe covers rather than tape it down. to keep up the covers you can use skin glue or sock tape, largely depends on your fabric

Ok, I am new on this board, and this is probably the first post I am making here so please bear with me.

I am a pretty old guy (comparatively) who is looking to cosplay as Bondrewd from Made in Abyss.

Does anyone have any advice on how to create his helmet? I bought the Humble Book Bundle: Cosplay, and it mentioned something about EVA foam. So I am guessing I have to use it. However, how do I make/find the design of such a helmet and ensure it can fit my head. Another thing is that after I heat up the EVA foam, will it really harden and how hard will it be.

The second thing I am concerned about is Bondrewd's coat. It seems very elaborate and I have no idea how to go about making it. I confess I have never sewed before and the cheap coat I found on Aliexpress goo.gl/ZivAhB to work with is quite plain (probably for the best since something more elaborate will probably get in my way). So the question for this is what sort of materials and equipment do I need to form the more elaborate patterns on Bondrewd's coat.

Thank you.

any basic hoodie pattern would work, just add the extra bit to the bottom. For the squares i woul use diluted acrylic paint, a sponge and a square stensil to stamp on all the squares individually.
for the wig you can use a curling iron to make curly spikes, hairspray and then pull out the curls and hairspray them again when it's done setting.
Any medium platinum blonde/lightblonde wig would do good probably.

>>9642100
>I bought the Humble Book Bundle: Cosplay, and it mentioned something about EVA foam.

bruh read the goddamn books, also tells you how to pattern. Why buy them, not read them and immediately ask help

And no foam doesnt harden when you heat it up, it makes it more bendable and it seals the pores that would otherwise suck up foam. It keeps the shape and keeps the foam flexibility when it's cooled down. Also in the books.

If you have no experience with sewing, modify the cheap coat a bit to suit your liking.

I've currently got it sitting out in the sun, but I don't know how well it'll work. Hey there, fellow Bondrewd. Im making one of these too.

My advice is to focus on the helmet first. Thats the most complicated piece, so get that looking how you want. Dont buy parts for anything else until you are happy with how your helmet is turning out.

For the helmet, Im working off of a very basic helmet pattern made out of EVA foam, and I will then make face plate as a seperate peice that I can put on the front with velcro. After that, its just a question of making the ear doodads and adding them in.

When it comes time to do the coat, recognize that the coat itself is not terribly complex. He is just wearing stuff over it. A simple steampunk coat of the right color will serve fine as a base. You then need to add the leather bracers, the harness with those two light globe things, and a jabot (the white cloth thing around his neck). Whether you make these yourself, or buy things that look close and modify them, is up to you.

Bondrewd would be hard as fuck for a newbie cosplayer with no experience in sewing/propmaking. But not impossible. Here is a rundown cosplay crafting:

You'll need EVA foam, just buy yoga mats in whatever size (can find them at Wal-Mart or whatever department store/supermarket with a general merchandise section. Just make sure they're 5mm thick or less (color is irrelevant).

Get an x-acto knife, good scissors, a good box cutter (not a $5 chinese one), and spare blades for the knives. You can shapen razor blades on the ridges of the bottom of a cheap mug to save money, foam wears out blades fast.

You use a heat gun to seal the pores and to shape it, hot foam can be bent and will them hold its shape. Then you use plastidip spray to seal the pieces further, spraypaint, and done. EVA foam pieces can be fused with Barge contact cement, super glue, or hot glue. Most adhesives will fuse to the foam, so you can attach velcro to removable parts.

Hardness isn't an issue, the foam will hold its shape even though it is very pliable. Foam is used because it's easy to work with, lightweight, and hard to damage.

You'll need at least rudimentary sewing ability as even a storebought jacket will require modification and you'll need specific materials for some parts. If you're older and independant just buy a sewing machine, you can get a good one under $100 and will most likely get a ton of usage out of it because cosplay is addicting.

Experiment before doing major parts and have fun.

Some tips for patterning as well:

Get a measuring tape and measure every aspect of yourself involved in a costume. Record all measurements when you're designing a pattern so it can be recreated if you fuck up. Irregular measurements can be done with mid-gauge wire (like if you want to estimate the elliptical shape of your head instead of just the circumference).

Start small and make small mock-ups just to make sure the patterns form the right shapes. You can use printer or construction paper for this and just cut out/assemble it. Working on multiple scales is invaluable.

For hand drafting patterns, make sure you have a good metal ruler/meterstick, protractor, triangle, and compass.

On larger EVA foam pieces, get a big roll of sketch paper for the patterning. Cut it out, trace it, and then cut the foam. This minimizes error as opposed to directly drawing on the foam. If you're doing a pepakura design (3D model converted to a special format for papercraft), you can print it and do exact measurements for pattern pieces.

On cloth, get a big roll of iron-on paper for patterning. Try to avoid drawing on the cloth at all unless you know it doesn't matter.
