Why is there such a shortage of cute guys in the cosplay community?

I mean there's a few cuties here and there but for the most part it's plain slobs.

Why?

>> No.9615475

Only the men who are really dedicated stick in cosplay since it's pretty much a woman's world
Whatever they do, some girl will get more credit because boobs, so they better be in it for the enjoyment of making things

>> No.9615478

Most of the guys would look fine in their day to day lives, but cosplaying tends to make them look a bit worse. This is mainly due to not properly styling their wigs, wearing cheap, mass produced costumes and not even bothering to iron them beforehand, and then wandering around a con for hours on end, making them much sweatier and less together looking than normal.
All of the can easily be fixed though, if they get better costumes, learn to style wigs, and put on some basic makeup to hide the redness and sweaty look.

that makes no sense that you're saying guys are just lazier and uglier than women in cosplay
the real fact is only the most dedicated guys are left in the smaller male cosplay scene, so you have fewer good looking guys

good looking guys also can't make shit from being a "cosplay model" so there aren't as many good looking, but vain male cosplayers are there are Nigiris

>that makes no sense that you're saying guys are just lazier and uglier than women in cosplay
Except that isn't what was said at all. There might be a bit to the laziness aspect though. You seem to be highly defensive about this though, which makes me think that you are mostly just butthurt because you yourself, or a guy you know isn't getting as much attention for your/his cosplays.
Sadly, that is just the nature of the community. Pretty girls, even just mildly so, will always get more attention for looks than guys do.
Personally, I am just happy anyone asks to take my pic at cons and seems to like my costume. I am aware I am not the best looking guy, and my costuming skills are still a work in progress, but I am enjoying it, and I'm not about to let lack of efame ruin my fun.

Except makeup and wigs make cosplayers /including guys/ look better. Any time you put on that theatrical of a costume and go to take picture in it you have to wear makeup and likely a wig not to look like a sickly potato. Guys don't get that though, and wind up looking awful

There are a lot of guys who do it, but you have to remember that a lot of these "Cosplay Girls" sexualize everything.

Being in marketing myself, woman tend to not spend as much money on men, disregarding personal beauty items. Hence why there aren't a lot of male strip clubs.

So the ability for a guy to be able to sit around and make props all day (lol when girls put on bra/panties/wig and call it cosplay) is almost not possible unless you are like Volpin or a few others who are lucky. But even then the guys have to go further to make constant video tutorials for money, since they can't simply sell posters of themselves in their underwear and a wig. Mainly because woman just wouldn't buy it, or buy it as much as what their male equivalents would buy.

>> No.9615523

But this is just efame side. 99.9% of female cosplayers are not efamous, so it's not a logical comparison

>> No.9615525

>>9615523
It is logical in the sense of why you don't see as many cosplayers online. There are tons at cons that look fine, they just might not be skilled in makeup and styling (we woman have had more practice ;P)

But back to what you said, it does play a role because where do you see the most cosplayers? You're not at a con most of the time so your brain relates things in the sense of where you see them. So it is easy for us to trick ourselves and think "Why aren't there many good looking male cosplayers" when more of our sensory data is from the internet.

Then there also is the factoring of sense when at a con. You are probably with cons or talking to people taking your picture so you are not always paying attention. Of course again, female cosplayers are more likely to be the center of attention at conventions so they have more people standing around them. This influences the way you think. So since you dont see circles around guys (unless they typically are in some badass armor) it plays a role in why you think there are not enough male cosplayers, let alone good looking ones.

>> No.9615758

It depends on how/where you view the community, because there isn't just one cosplay community. If you're looking at the efame world it's because men are more likely to like, share and throw money at female cosplayers. If you're talking about the cosplay contest world, it's because there are more women in situations where they don't have to work 40 hours a week at a job and thus can spend more time on making elaborate costumes. If you're just looking at the people wearing costumes at a con, it's a pretty mixed bag and won't be consistent.

Lower effort because guys tend cosplay more for the fun of it rather than focusing on looking good. Not trying to be demeaning towards people who actually put work into their cosplay, wanting to look great is understandable and respectable.

Also the lack of "cuties" can be attributed to a variety of factors. There's flat out less male cosplayers. Both genders have proportionally less attractive people than average or unattractive people, so that ratio seems skewed for dudes. Handsome, muscular males might be inclined to do more masculine costumes that don't have a focus on highlighting beauty.

But most of this only applies to western cosplayers. If you look at Japanese/Korean cosplay there's a shitload of bishounen/trap cosplayers who put a lot of effort into their looks as well as their costumes. The factors behind your question are highly variable, and it almost sounds like bait because it's so generalized.

>Why is there such a shortage of cute guys in the cosplay community?

The older a male cosplayer gets, the less likely it is we can pull off young anime characters (who are usually in their teens and young adult age).

And usually, we aren't into cosplaying as old men characters. So Male cosplayers not only get more selective about their costumes, but sometimes opt out simply because the type of things he wants to do are out of their price range (that would be me atm).

This doesn't address your original question, however. Cute guys is a subjective thing based on your tastes.

Easiest answer I have is most male nerds (the real ones), have self esteem issues, and other pursuits. They are so used to people not wanting them for their body, they forget their bodies exist. They can't even conceptualize the idea that someone would find them attractive in the first place, so they just don't work out.

>> No.9616767

This thread is so confusing to me.

There actually are quite a few guys who have potential to be real hottie cosplayers at cons, but a lot of them don't invest in the little details such as natural makeup, styling wigs, and steaming/ironing their clothes.

It may not seem like much, but when you're walking around cons your skin will sweat, get flush -- you know, just the regular stuff that all humans do. Add natural imperfections such as red spots and old acne scars, and then everything will make your overall cosplay look less polished.

Seriously, dudes, play around with Korean BB cream samples, or if you're dark-skinned then play around with drug store foundations (a lot of drug stores offer refunds on opened makeup that doesn't work out).

We're not expecting you to become a contour master or learn to apply every shade of the rainbow to your eyelids. Just even out your skin tone, and you will look less tired and gross. Don't forget to buy makeup remover.

>> No.9616796

The thing about makeup is guys are never taught anything about it. Women are exposed at a young age and have years of practice to work off of. Sure something is common sense to you, but something as simple as choosing the right shit is way over the average mans head.
It's silly, but that's how it is.
You can learn, but the inexperience combined with the social pressures make it a hard thing to do, especially with the low self esteem of your average cosplayer.

Not sure if these have been mentioned but there are several factors I would say

First, there's not as much "reward" for a guy to look hot and have a nice costume as it is for girls, because a hot girl gets much more attention fro both girls and guys

Second, girls are expected to know about makeup and hair styling etc, while a guy who wears makeup gets shamed, so even when they try to cosplay, they don't wear makeup even if makeup makes your cosplay look so much better

I think in general nerdy girls tend to be hotter than nerdy guys (of course there are exceptions), and hot nerdy guys aren't really that open about it, because there's kinda this stigma that guys who play video games are losers, but girls who play video games are so amazing and wonderful

I know the "gamer gurl" hype isn't as prominent as a few years back, but it's still ridiculous
For example (this is getting kinda of topic), I used to play wow, and there was this girl who got to get into raids and stuff even though she sucked, just because she was a girl.
Like, nobody even knew what she looked like.

tl:dr
Girls (ESPECIALLY hot girls) get praised for being nerdy, guys, not so much
