Things to look forward to are the Riverwalk with all its bars and restaurants.
The dealer's hall has been very stagnant for the last 3 years and as someone who goes every year I find it to be a waste of time. You may enjoy it though since you're new but alot of the stuff being sold there is the same stuff the vendors bring to every Texas con.

It's actually pretty fun, desu. Good mix of partying and cosplay, which are the reasons I attend cons. The do also seem to have a more varied selection of guests than a few other Texas cons, but I don't attend cons for guests. And there are some decent panels each year.
It's a fairly consistent good con, which I think counts for a lot in Texas. It's not like, for instance, Ikkicon or something where you're like "......how could this get more shitty?" And yet every year they manage to astound you.
Main problem with SJ lately is that it's directly opposite Dragon Con.

Staffer here. Can confirm SJ JFashion is not the main focus of the con. They will not be bringing much in terms of brand. If Anime Matsuri had a brand SJ will most likely not get that brand. Can also confirm Angelic Pretty chances are very slim

The con obviously won't be cancelled, but how do we think attendance will be affected by the weather? Houston/the coast are underwater and flying in is becoming impossible due to so many cancelled flights. The worst of the rain hasn't hit SA yet and should over the next two days, but due to storm delay it may be even longer. I know I'm not going even if it's not raining on Saturday.

Rain is supposed to be done by tuesday/wednesday. San Antonio is pretty safe from the brunt of the storm. It'll probably be a bit wet so outdoor photoshoots might suffer, but the con itself will probably be fine but attendence will definitely take a hit due to the flights and a lot of the people from the harder hit zones probably aren't going to be up for coming.

SJ should really give refunds to those who can't come because they're from flooded areas. Trying to force them to find last minute buyers or "roll over" their badges to next year is bullshit. I don't doubt it but this is still a business that makes a hefty profit. Considering everyone that works it besides Dave is volunteer, he's the only one that gets paid. So if they refund the tickets all that happens is Dave's paycheck isn't as big which means he won't get to take as many "business trips" next year or he'll have to cut back one shitty local guest for next year. This is a huge disaster. Houston is flooded and people need the $50+ badge refund way more than they need fucking rollovers for next year's con they probably weren't planning on attending anyways.

I'd say around half the profit comes from people paying for tickets at the con, usually for events like this you actually start with a deficit. The renting of the convention center and making everything work and bringing people in does cost quite a bit.
I don't know how much money has been spent and how much hasn't been spent, but I wouldn't be surprised if right now they literally can't afford to give refunds at this time, at least not to everyone that asks for one.

The staff is awful. I know a handful of people that have left in the past couple years because of how much they despise the con head and how unorganized everything is. say what you want about Jay but he literally ran the con while he was there and ever since he's left it's really gone to shit (not to say it wasn't already before he left). They should be able to afford to give maybe a few thousand dollars (AT MOST) worth of refunds to people that need the money way more now than they do two weeks from now. As long as they requested proof of address there shouldn't be a problem. Then people can't just request refunds even if they aren't from affected areas.

Is SJ's AA similar to other con's quality wise? I was looking around, and 95% of the stuff there was really bad honestly. There were a few really great people, but I felt that most were hardly worth looking at.

SJ's AA is first come first serve. They only do a cursory jury to make sure you aren't breaking rules. FCFS means lower quality.

My friend and I went as espeon and umbreon with armored parts on Saturday. Super last minute cosplay that actually turned out semi decent. I am new to cosplaying so I'm just happy my stuff didn't fall apart until the end of the day.

We snuck into the con Friday and Saturday without paying for a pass. I felt like I was in a fucking video game hiding from the security whenever I saw one because they did actually ask for passes to be showing (never had that happen before). Ended up just taking a pic of our friend's pass, printing it and cutting it out since she had an extra plastic slip and we had chrunchyroll lanyards from other cons. Walked around Saturday with no problems after that. We didn't go to the vendor room or any panels except the OW meetup panel Friday which was god awful due to the person seated next to us. Jesus christ.

Overall it was a decent con for not paying for anything but parking. Got some good photos and got to see some of our friends from A-kon there. Also I saw the gear suit guys posting here crabwalking around. lol

There were four, two dance skits, the Maes Hughes, and the Voltron skit. The guy who came out and sang is only like 24 but he won a singing contest at the con and performed at half time. The journeyman skit winner was one of the dancers.

Depends on the con. Afest had a good turnout and nearly all of them were high quality.

I think it depends on the prize offering and if the skits are judged on craftmanship or not.

Plus kids these days are lazy and just want to take the easy option.
