So here I am sitting at work with my coffee, about two clicks away from D.C. thinking whether I should stop by and "visit" this evening. I don't even have a badge, and don't care to buy one. I've outright snuck into the formal ball before, the only event worth going too, closest to the reason why most people go in the first place: to grab a girl to back to their hotel room and get laid.

What used to be a fun convention among all my friends has now devolved into an empty circle-jerk of obsessed hobbyists, hot celebrity cos-players who nothing but photoshoot, and poor friendless autists whose highlight of their year is to spend a few expensive days watching anime in a panel with strangers they don't even know.

You go to the "Voice Actors After Dark Panel" maybe, to relive the childhood thrill of "staying up" with pillows and blankets - only to be affronted with the sight of aging PC feminists droning on and on about what annoys them, sitting next to what appears to be a 40 something otaku, laying on his stanky breath in your direction at 3:00 in the morning.

You step outside and look up at the late summer night sky and wonder, "what is my life?"

Then on Sunday, like the world doesn't even care, they pack up their, equipment, and money, and leave, turning the Walter E. Convention Center back into dreary center of business that it really is, as you return to your job next Monday morning.

But hey, there are some hot cos-players there right? Well you can't even sneak past the front door anymore. So yeah.

*sips covfefe* Have fun.

It was a good con. The WCC and the Marriott were lovely. The library and the church were lovely. My only quibble that were actually within the con's control is that they shouldn't have held large gatherings on the skybridge; they should have held them out of the way on the third floor.

Compared to the inner harbor the photography for the area in DC the con was located in was limited as fuck. Two older buildings outside and the main lobby of the Marriott Marquis which the second level and staircase was constantly being used as photo settings. The latter being so much the case it was more useful using a fucking elevator to get to the second floor than the stair case because of shots being done.

Everywhere else around the con area was not that great unless you go off a block or two, and even then there is no assurance that the locals will care for it. The inner harbor is worlds better than this shit.

>>9596827
Funny thing is someone left behind a grenade lighter (that looked like an actual grenade) outside of the con on Saturday night. There were like 5 cop cars at the con as well.

Honestly I am surprised nothing crazy happened, being that its DC and all I was expecting some stupid shit to happen with cosplayer props that may look too real freaking out some of the security/police around town. Just felt like a potential cocktail for getting this con shut down.

I liked the WCC because it seemed more open, but the price and the surrounded places for food/booze were way more limited in terms of walking. I'm not a huge fan of wearing costumes around DC or on the metro, especially since the con seemed more contained than in Baltimore.

Anyone get pictures of stuff/cosplayers? There were some gorgeous cosplays that I didn't recognize.

The arcade was a major let down, but the swing lounge was fantastic. Nice space to let go and get to know people, especially as a break from the usual raves at cons.

Also in the AA, and agreed. There was some merchandise damaged, but they asked everyone that got water damage to come to them with the items so they could document it, so I think they will be paid for one way or another.

The leaks happened, they closed the alley, moved the effected artists, and then opened the alley. Honestly they were in a bad spot, so they ended up in a much better spot after the move.
At first I was annoyed at the alley closure, but the hour break actually meant other artists got a chance to shop with me so I actually got more sales out of it O:

I think they mean 'out of the top 10' since there are still several large cons to go this year they may get bumped off.

I still enjoy attending the con but they've had enough snafus over the past three years I can see why attendance has declined. The new space is loads better than the BCC and its well worth checking out next year if you've been on the fence in previous years.

>> No.9598523

Even this location is nicer and they've just started turning things around, it's too little too late because they're flat out out of money. The boneheaded decisions to jack up badge prices 15 bucks in a single year after a reg disaster and then doubling down on Ota Vegas (which they have to still run or lose more money) plus the cavalier way they throw money around is all coming back to bite them in the ass. The venue change is nice, but it's the culture of Otakons management that needs to change.

That was one of the bigger reasons why I did not actually buy tickets for the con this year. Typically they have one big thing that they base their con around (VA guests for it, panels, a special screening) but this year that was really not the case at all. Arguably the only thing that came close was something Sailor Moon related but even that was not as big.

My SO was hoping on something YoI related given how popular the series has been with females but they barely did anything at all with having it there. Hell the con in Atlantic City NJ had a heavier presence of YoI stuff compared to Otakon and that is sad.

It's mostly due to a shift in industry. They're aiming to make big announcements at the spring cons and at AX for the spring and summer/fall seasons respectively so Otas timing doesnt really line up with industry priorities. Ota Vegas is stupid and a terrible thing. Like it's just a money sink hole. I would love to see the receipts for what the con is spending its money on because there are conventions half the size of Otakon at the same venue and cost half as much. And You can't even say it's going to guests because Otakon hasn;t had high profile guests in years. AX cost way less than Otakon to attend and has way more guests... and I imagine they cost the same to run.

I ended up not going this year because I wanted to gauge how good/shit Otakon's first DC year was, and to get some intel on how to go about things for next year.

I want to go next year, but I have a few questions:

1.) Are there a wealth of hotels in the area like there were at Baltimore? (I liked that there seemed to be 3 right there at the con, +2 more within good walking distance and >5 more in the safety range)

2.) How soon do the hotels open their registration? Is it a universal date for hotel registration, or is there a bunch of shit I need to research and watch out for? (I want to be on top of this shit, because they shouldn't have to sell out in <2 minutes, it's a hotel room, not the fucking lottery.)

3.) I liked the idea that Baltimore is this gang-infested shithole all year, but when con season comes, all the gangs say "fuck this" and peace out for the weekend so all the costumed weeaboos come in, thus there's this nice safety zone 5 blocks in any direction from the convention itself. Did DC have this feel, or was it genuinely more dangerous-feeling this time around?

Hmm thought my response went thru. I'll try again.

1.) A very fair amount. I stayed at the Grand Hyatt which is .6 miles away from the center according to maps but depending on your walking speed, it could take roughly 5-10ish minutes walking from the closest exit.

2.) I don't remember what I did in past years but it's either constantly check otakon.com or get an email since I'd be a returning member. Last year I tried to book the Marriot Marquis which is part of the con and as soon as booking opened, that filled up in like 5ish minutes my hesitation be damned.

3.) LOL. Compared to Baltimore, I don't recall seeing ANY homeless people even while walking out at 2/3 AM.

Btw, depending on your taste in music, my group hit up a club not too far away called Soundcheq Thurs night. If you're from the NY area, you'd prob be surprised that drinks are cheaper there in DC than around here. Shit I know I was.

>3.) LOL. Compared to Baltimore, I don't recall seeing ANY homeless people even while walking out at 2/3 AM.

I did, Around the con and in chinatown (where most of your restaurants are at) there were plenty of homeless people sleeping in corners, near by the metro stations and on the sidewalks. Hell, saw a homeless guy in a wheelchair just passed out in his chair, looked like he was either drugged out or dead.

Compared to the inner harbor DC was far worse with homeless.

>> No.9603243

>>9603046
Ahh true. I only passed thru Chinatown once but it was still busy but at that time I remember there being a pretty good population of homeless.

Gonna take back what I said about not recalling cuz I passed thru some park on the way to and from Soundcheq and pretty much every bench had a homeless person. Other than that and what I remember from Chinatown, I feel like the very immediate area around the con had no homeless.

Explain. You mean going to otakon's website for updates on when hotels will be opening up, or is Otakon doing that thing again where you have to book your hotels through its website again? Meaning, I don't have to bookmark and check 7+ different hotel websites for when reservations finally open.

>or get an email since I'd be a returning member
How does that work? People who stayed in a specific hotel will get emails from the hotel and get first dibs on open rooms?

Sorry for being anal about it, but I always ALWAYS miss hotel reservations by like a week, and even then hear that they filled up in less than 5 minutes which is bullshit.

Usually otakon opens stupid fast - like 2 to 3 weeks after the con is over.

>> No.9603531

>>9603484
not who you're replying to, but if you have twitter you could turn notifications on for Otakon's tweets. That's how I always manage to get hotels for Otakon, PAX, ect, since they'll usually tweet out a link.

Also a staff member on the forums said it'll take a week or two before hotel info is available cause they want to make some adjustments, so I would be on the look out towards the end of this month.

DC has one of the highest homeless rates in the country, and more homeless people are visibly on the streets than usual because the library they usually hang out at is closed for renovations. There usually aren't too many hanging out on the direct route between the convention center and City Center, but everywhere else has its regulars. The overwhelming majority don't want any trouble, and I walk and bike around DC a lot and I've never been seriously hassled. But a homeless man pulled a knife on some middle-schoolers outside my upscale apartment building a few weeks ago, so, don't do anything stupid. (Speaking of middle-schoolers, summer is also a time when dumbass kids try to hold people up with fake guns.)

DC is a pretty normal city. Don't be a moron, and you'll be fine.

Sorry for delay. Yea if I check the website, I make sure the dates when looking through the hotels link does show Otakon 201x (next year) dates. Also, the Twitter idea isn't bad and will do that myself as an extra alert. I've never booked thru the hotel itself and always thru Otakon cuz isnt it true we get some kinda discount? Plus I think it accurately and much more quickly shows what hotels are available.

And what I meant by email is that as a previous otakon registrant, I believe I'd get emails when hotels would be available to book.

Again, the Marriot Marquis is the one that filled up ridiculously quick. The 5ish hotels that are within a mile are ones that either filled up within an hour to within the week. But I was really anal about distance and wanted to get something reasonably priced that wasn't over a mile. Some of the hotels were 1.5+ miles from the con and I definitely wanted to avoid that.
