Started out before the War. Stopped so everyone could work on some project in Manhatten. Or in Heinlein's case, iinadvertantly write about something remarkably similar....

It's where the Hugo awards get ruined over arguments about killing puppies. People figure out where the next Worldcon would be, and quietly observe the traditions handed down from the First Fandom - (I think we're on the nineteenth one, check with the mailing list. )

The big difference between this and the cons you're sort of used to is that it's also a business event. Sometimes, well known authors just show the fuck up because it's Worldcon, and they're fans too - and there're connections and business that can be done.

Also. You're not paying to attend Worldcon, you're paying to join the World Science Fiction Society - Worldcon is just a perk of being a member.

Which is why, traiditionally, even with small anime cons, you're not buying entrance to the con, you're paying membership of the convention.

Not that most people notice the distinction, but there is one. You got to remember that the person wearing a staff t-shirt is a member of the same convention, as are the committee

If you go into it expecting another Eirtakon, you'll be dissapointed. It's not like that. It is very much an old event.

But go anyway. It's not going to be cheap. But itt'll likely never come here again. And sure,m it'll be a grand excuse for a pissup all the same.

I have high hopes for next year. A lot of stuff different since they were limited to one day, but all things considered it was pretty neat.
By booths do you mean artists? Pretty decent selection, A lot of non-anime but I guess that's to be expected nowadays. Only one stood out as being sub-par, some artist doing "edgy" grotesque art that honestly looked like childrens scribbles. Maybe they'll be stricter in the artist selection next year when they have more applications.

I enjoyed it for the most part. And it was an okay start. Didn't like the after party having both drink and kids around. And no follow up event to that either. Except kick out at 8.

There could have been a lot more events. Or at the very least added extra options like screening rooms.

The place was terribly signposted desu. And only way I knew where to expect stuff was because of previous eirtakons. And even then it was way differently structured.

They got good numbers though and it felt a whole lot less insincere than the MCMs and DCC cons. Those things feel super corporate.


Anyways.

Panels were okay.
Cos play contest was terribly organized and MC'd. The guy barely read the entry before he'd start announcing it. And there was a load of empty slots and miscues.

I was at Kaizokucon Last year. Stayed in the river Lee hotel. Wouldn't know the good places to stay anyways desu. And can't see how much the committee leaking the dates could really affect things like. I don't know what constitutes good places in this context desu. Cork and UCC is pretty walkable.
But in fairness. Kaizokucon is really good craic like. Last year the funniest thing to me is that while there were all these cosplay people there was a wedding going on in the church literally right beside the con. Plus. I always appreciate the fact that pints are cheaper than a fiver.

Kaizokucon has low key potential to be the best drinking con thats going.

Also Akumakon is next for me anyways. Because galway is such a nice spot con or no con. Though I'd be hoping to get a better place to stay than where I was last year.

Also, the committee members for all the cons announcing/advertising at J Con were pretty lifeless and not doing a great job of selling their respective cons. I really get the vibe as years pass by all the con people who organize them really lose their pep for it.

Very disappointing. I made a post over a year ago on /cgl/ about how irish cons are too heavily reliant on the same panels run every year by the same few people. Sinead lynch is running 4 panels alone on saturday for example, and the rest of saturday + sunday are all panels run by the usual suspects. Nothing is changing
