I really hate the amount of shoop Chinese lolitas use. It's uncanny valley and yet they're the ones who get the most praise.

Being 100% honest: people give zero fucks about realism. They want pretty pictures and that's it. There is a limited amount of extremely beautiful and photogenic people in the world, and even supermodels are shopped to hell and back in ads, so why not?

I have extremely dark skin around my eyes because of my facial structure. So untill I get surgery I wipe out any trace of dark circles on Meitu so that I don't look like a skull. That's as extreme as I get.

I don't care about basic editing like airbrushing, retouching colors, special effects, etc. but when it comes to cosplayers like Misa Chiang, it becomes dumb. I don't understand how people could look at photos of super shooped cosplayers/lolitas and think "Ah yes, this is totally what a realistic person looks like."

In my experience with people who fall for ridiculously overshopped qt Asian girls is that they know few to no Asian people IRL and have never visited anywhere like Japan, China etc., so it's easier for them to believe there are people on the planet who really look like that. People who've actually seen a decent number of Asian women in person know that while some of them can be beautiful just like with any other race, even the pretty ones don't look like ethereal porcelain anime BJDs in real life. Whereas people who only watch anime and follow edited cosplayers with circle lenses and heavy makeup on social media might think that that's just what Asian girls look like.

I live in the middle of nowhere and we still have asians here. everywhere i've traveled to, i've seen asians at. asians aren't this unicorn race, they're far more popular now than they used to be. i went to a hick horse show way out in hicktown and still saw asians. There were over 500 kids in my year at high school. Three of us were Asian. We're not unicorns, but certain countries in Western Europe do have very few Asians, especially trendy East Asians. It's easy to tell yourself Japanese/Korean/Chinese girls can look just like anime when you only meet a dozen or so of them in your life. From my personal experience, I think Koreans are the ones that look most like their photos out of the Asian ethnicities. I've always seen the "ulzzang" pages of beautiful Korean girls and always assumed nobody looked like that. I went to Korea recently, and a lot of girls were stunning. Mind you, a lot of them I assume had some plastic surgery, so in a way some could say it's the same as shoop since it's fake regardless. A lot of the kids looked like little porcelain dolls, so I assume even without plastic surgery a good amount of them are naturally beautiful as well. Strange thing is, I'd never date a girl who shoops every photo to hell, but I would date one who's had surgery.

So what's the difference between using photoshop to drastically change the way your face looks and using 40 lbs of makeup to drastically change the way your face looks? You could argue that both examples are trying to sell an image of themselves that doesn't really exist. If you've ever worn makeup, not even for cosplay but just for daily life, how can you justify being salty at other people using photoshop to alter their appearance?

The only difference here is that photoshop has a much lower barrier for entry and takes less effort to create more extreme results as opposed to cosmetology. Think of it this way, if you could get the results of a Hollywood make up team for the same amount of time for you to put on 'a little makeup', you probably would probably pick the professional Hollywood make up team all day every day over doing your basic make up routine by yourself.

I'd also like to add that during my shoop days, I made an instagram that gained well over 8k followers. somehow I was never called out for shoop in comments or anything. Different anon, but I also shoop at a level that cgl considers "a lot" and have over 50k followers. Shooping doesn't change how I feel about myself. It's just a way to get nicer photos. I know exactly how I look and (not bragging but) I look cute in person. However, I'm not photogenic. People tend to notice a lot more flaws in photos than in motion or in person, so I don't feel bad about shooping.
I shoop both cosplay and non cosplay pictures, but I don't post normal daily life photos. I only post things where i'm wearing makeup for a certain purpose, since I normally don't wear makeup at all. People have recognized me at cons before and there's not really any issues. I also have videos of myself and I do instagram lives pretty often. Despite that, no one has ever said I look different in person or in lives, and the only people who complain about me shooping so much are people on cgl, who likely haven't seen me in person. Gulls have found candid photos of me and said they were shooped, so I guess I don't look that different from my shoops.

I always thought I was good at spotting photoshop but you never realize how subtle things like evening out your under eye or photoshopping away creases from concealer under the eyes makes. I wouldn't have recognized her if not for the costume.

Not really sure what typical cosplay shots look like since I don't cosplay so I just took some Zekia pics since she's the original person in discussion anyways. Made her head ant size just to prove how tiny you can make it without making the background look like a spiral. Obviously could have been cleaned up more but I'm not going to spend hours shooping for this. Also, again, elongating limbs wasn't my first point since the first thing I said was it would obviously be more plausible to just thin them my main point was shrinking the head. Though, anyone who's planning to elongate limbs would probably be in easy positions to do so and it wouldn't be hard at all.

I'm pretty ugly (or just painfully average, my BDD tells me one thing but people tell me another) and I shoop my pictures because it's the only way for me to handle looking at them. I post very few pictures of myself. But In the ones I do post, I do slim my body, make my nose a bit smaller, whiten my teeth, fix my red eyes, sometimes I fix my jawline.

I guess the range of acceptability is filtering, skin-smoothing, fixing under eye circles.

I photoshop my pictures in a subtle way to make myself look less like a monster. I don't make myself look unrealistically beautiful-- just less completely awful. I'm ugly and I have body issues so I take very few pictures in the first place. That's the most honest way I can put it.

Oh boy. I feel you. Just got photos back from a shoot and the photo composition was great but my face looks like it's melting. On the plus side mine was a free shoot but it also means I can't really ask for a change/original files...
