Thinking of getting into platform sandals too since injection-molded pleather shoes is suffering in hot weather, but they're hard to find and harder to work into a coord in a way that doesn't look horrendous. Or maybe shoes with an open side like >>9560192.

I come bearing content! I had some spare time earlier this week so I translated an article from an old GLB. I know there's a lot of Meta fans in these threads so I figured I'd post here. I'm not a professional translator, so sorry in advance for awkward wording.

The following is an article written by Ms. Kato, the former Meta designer and current Physical Drop designer, about the founding of Metamorphose and her approach to designing Lolita. Found in Issue 11 of the GLB.

-Brand Story-

Popular for their original pattern onepieces and skirts, the brand Metamorphose temps de fille!

Being Lolita, without being confined by Lolita, we asked what the secret of their designs that feel of "anything goes spirit" is!

Brand History>

1993 - while enrolled in Osaka Mode Gakuen "Metamorphose" designs were sold in shops via consignment.

1997 - With the present company director Matsuoka, Metamorphose begins operations in Kyoto.

1998 - From Kyoto, the base of operations was transferred to the current Minamisenba location.
- Osaka company store opens.

1999 - Nagoya store and Tokyo company shop open.

2000 - Changing from private management, it becomes the publicly traded "Metamorphose Temps de fille" (LLC)

2002 - The company name is revised to Metamorphose.

>>9560636
(Part 2)

Brand Name Origin

The brand's official name is "Manefest Ange Metamorphose temps de fille". All together there isn't really much meaning (laugh) but I liked the meaning attached to each individual part. "Manifest ange" means "manifest angel", while "metamorphose" means "change" or "transform". I found it in a fashion lexicon dictionary, and the meanings resonated with me so I added it in. "Temps de fille" means "girls era"

Like overthrowing the fixed concepts of Lolita fashion, I want to embrace unpredictability!

<Brand Story>

I think there are many of those who wish to become designers who idolize the designers of their favorite brand. My situation was "and so, since I have to eat", so there weren't really any particular designers that I idolized. From about elementary school until high school I wanted to be a writer. I wrote short stories, and was involved in a play so I wrote the script for that too. However, during my high school years a band boom swept the world. I too started a band then, so I wanted that to continue forever. But the reality is that a band won't feed you, isn't it? At that time in order to keep doing things I loved, I felt I had to search for another source of income. Thus, if you are searching for a career, then it's fashion business or beautician. After that, since I like cooking perhaps a chef or something. However, it seemed difficult; beauticians' hands become rough and chapped, and their vacations are few. So I dismissed that idea (laughs). At the time, it was still difficult for women to make a career out of being a chef, so I gave up on that as well. So, by process of elimination, Fashion Business it was. The classes at the vocational school were at night, and the tuition was cheap. So I thought "this is it!" And moved forward.

>>9560639
(Part 3)

Still, from the start the feeling was that I loved Lolita. It's not that I couldn't continue with Fashion Business, or that I didn't like it. The genre was not in question; I loved western clothes, it was only what particular brand I liked I didn't know. During that time, I became friends with a shop clerk and a customer at a store near my part-time job. They told me "there's a shop you might be interested in!". That shop turned out to be a select shop that carried the indie brands of the day, but today those brands are famous one-of-a-kind and Lolita style brands dealing in western-style clothes. I saw that shop and felt a change in me "It's alright to not be trendy, just me making clothes with this feeling is good." Isn't it so, that Japanese apparel makers won't sell things that aren't chasing the latest trends? Only inside that shop was there no relation to fads and trends, or in only dealing in so-called standard items. So it seemed to have an amazing charm. "How nice~" I said (laughs). Since I felt like that, from the time I was 20 all the homework I made for school became lolita. However, since the school I was going through was very strict on theme, at first they couldn't accept Lolita at all. At a fashion school they could not accept items that weren't "Mode" yet. Indeed, in both eastern collections and Paris collections the relationship between designs was to exclude pointlessness and emphasize the silhouette of clothes, wasn't it? Lolita was if anything decorative, and so I was shunned and kept at a distance. My assignment scores weren't particularly good either. But I continued to only submit lolita, and depending on the teacher I was met with understanding and they quickly remembered my face (laughs). Surrounded as I was with a school where assignments were contests and Mode style was endorsed, and because clothes were made in the conscious image of idolized designers, I felt that I was incredibly different.

>> No.9560649

>>9560641
(Part 4)

I started Metamorphose while I was in school, and the customers too were girls around the same age as me. Moreover, there were students from the same school, so I felt truly apologetic. When I saw people wearing the clothes I made, I would say "thank you", but with the feeling I was apologizing (laugh). From that time I began to live on the income from Metamorphose. There was an income, but fully half of it went to the cost of materials. It was quite difficult. But I felt it was something worth doing, and those around me continued to offer advice. There were many people who were better with technology than me, or with better grades than me, all aiming to become designers. However in practice there are many people unwilling to change, starting something only to quickly abandon it completely. Thus I think it's not simply about your grades in school and the like, it's something different. Now, because of the internet, individuals who make clothes and other things can easily make themselves known to many people, can't they? In those days we didn't have the internet, so those who went to the shop could tell few people about it.

The brand concept is "anything goes". While the base is lolita fashion, I personally don't only like Lolita, I like the extensive genre of clothes themselves. So at that time I will mix what I want to do with Lolita fashion. Of course there are surely designers who think differently (laugh).

This year it will have been 10 years since the brand was founded, so I think we should go back to the beginning and reset our feelings. Hereafter I want to live doing unexpected things! I think if possible I would like to overturn the fixed concepts of Lolita fashion. Also, within the staff I have started a literary club, and we're writing stories there. One of these days I'd like to make a book out of it! (Laugh)

Honestly the more I read this interview the more fascinating it is. Maybe it's just my inner meta fan but there seems to be a lot of insight into the mindset of early lolita, and people's thoughts toward it on top of the insight into how the brand was built. I find her practicality so refreshing; she doesn't use flowery language or romanticize much, and she has such a strong commitment to what the clothes represent to her.

Oh god I'm an idiot. There's a part I missed copying, sorry guys! This goes after the first paragraph in >>9560649

Now I'm not in a band, and the way of expressing something through music and fashion is different. But I think isn't a person's desire to convey something the same? Music too has a message, and in the hands of who receives it it is changed and transformed into various winds. Clothing too is the same I think. The wind changes and become something new depending on who wears it.

>I like how lolita can feel timeless
I also love that you can just disregard trends with lolita and wear whatever era you like. But I think some people try too hard to put coords in a category, which takes away the timelessness. Like if you wear sugary carnival, they want you to wear it in 2009 OTT sweet style or else ''it looks off''. Or when you wear a really old OP with recently released accessories and they assume you are doing oldschool wrong.

I think it's just the common trend/mode right now to match everything and use printed tights, printed OTKs, etc. People don't do it because right now it's not really how lolita "is" in terms of how a large percentage of lolitas dress and how shops show things coorded. Grosgrain ribbons are easier to pin than the satin ones Bodyline uses.

I have a couple of old Classical Puppets ones and a bunch of more recent MeLikesTea ones, plus some cheap no-brand pettis that came free with stuff on auctions. Most of my oldschool fits just right with a single ordinary petti, but some of the velvet stuff needs layering (a lot of pieces with tiered designs can take a lot of poof as well) and some of the less poofy stuff needs one of the thin no-brand pettis. MeLikesTea are comfortable and let you customise the length and poof level so I've gravitated towards using hers most of the time. I'd measure your skirts and suss out what you need and then buy a shorter one, since you can always use it for layering as well.

If you live in a country where you can get decent short pettis in costume stores that might be worth trying too, but when I looked I only found horrible tulle ones that were scratchy enough to potentially snag stuff I wore them with, so I gave in and bought a custom one.

If you don't like the look of them just tied under your chin you can use the long excess straps to criss-cross in the back then tie around your neck like a choker, although it's more of a modern lolita thing. I can't find it now but I've seen Misako do this in videos. For my Bodyline headdresses I tend to cut the stupidly long ribbons shorter and use a lighter to stop them fraying, but with more expensive brands I don't want to damage the resale of by cutting I do the choker thing.

I think I'll have to wait for a sale, the meta socks are 3,300 plus 2,800 shipping, for a dumb pair of socks. If anyone has a better solution I'm all ears. I was thinking of tea aging a bodyline pair but the lace is synthetic.

Just stick to looking for 生成り in burando. Even if one is beigier than another it's usually in the same undertones, so not really noticeable unless you're planning on wearing the sleeves of one blouse with another brand's blouse, or wearing two different brand's socks on each leg.

Taobao and offbrand are a bad idea. My closet self-split because almost all of the taobao stuff I bought that are marked as "milk white", "rice white", "not white", even "generation" turned out to be a very light lemony yellow that clashes with kinari. Offbrand is even worse, I've seen things that photograph as ivory, described as beige and irl is a colour that looks closer to camel.

There are socks on eBay with cotton lace that are redeemable after starching (I keep meaning to do a tutorial on it), and I've successfully tea dyed lace tights before. I doubt the socks will go on sale, they usually sell out in all the non-weird colours well before that. Last couple of times I stocked up on socks I got a whole bunch of different colours from AP/BtSSB so I could bundle them with another order and save on shipping.

How well do the screen printed pieces hold up? I just got a piece from 2007 and I'm hoping it's going to be okay, since I know that the screen printing on t-shirts fades and cracks pretty badly.

>> No.9575728

>>9575706
depends on how worn the piece is. cracking and fading happens a lot more often when a piece is washed, and taking that dresses are often too delicate to wash (often), there's a big chance the print is still okay.

do you happen to know the condition stated in the listing?

>> No.9575753

>>9575585
Yeah, you just remove the ribbon (replacing it with something nicer is optional) and starch and iron it and they're nearly identical to BtSSB's socks (the lace and overall design is incredibly similar, but by look and feel I'm guessing the socks themselves have a lot more polyester in the mix than BtSSB's). They're nearly all kind of thigh-high though, which is fine if you're going for that look (good with black stuff) or wearing something short but a pain in the ass otherwise. The white ones are also *super* white and need a light tea dying to look their best even if you don't want them beige - I haven't tried tea-dying them yet as I suspect the pure cotton lace and poly(cotton) socks may take up dye at different rates and look weird.

I posted some comparison pics to the Lolita General a while back, but that was before I realised how much of a difference starching them makes:

>> No.9575779

>>9575757
when you receive it, take a look at the tag first, that should tell you most of it. I think people normally recomend dry-cleaning, but some chemicals may clash with the print, so it's best to ask the dry-cleaner first.

I personally prefer to steam all of my pieces in the bathroom when needed

different anon here. if I have the right socks in mind, I do not recommend these for short x bigger thighs. I have them, and they are uncomfortably tight.

>> No.9575835

>>9575784
I'm fairly slim so I didn't have an issue, I'd say they're pretty average as lolita socks go. BtSSB's are tighter (BtSSB/AatP socks in general seem to run really small, I have a few print socks from them that are super tight, smaller than IW print socks I've had). Maxicimam I would have expected to be plus-sized friendly since they have a lot of plus-sized clothes, but I got some of their lace-topped recently and they're not that stretchy IMO, they fit me fine but I can't see them stretching to fit a bigger girl easily. Of all the brands I've owned I'd say AP's lace-topped socks are largest, they go up high and stretch a lot.

Thanks for posting that! Yeah, I bought the white pair but wasn't sure if they could be successfully tea dyed. I only need them slightly off-white. They were only $3.50 on aliexpress so I might try it and share results.

Dumb question but is steaming a good alternative for cleaning lolita pieces? I have some dresses with glitter and I've been wondering about different cleaning techniques

>> No.9575876

>>9575841
I have a standing steamer and I love it, I've wanted one for a couple of years and never took the plunge because they're pricey (I bought a cleaning steamer once that was supposed to have a garment steaming attachment but it was shit and never worked properly and eventually broke, would not recommend combination devices of that type). I took the plunge and got a steamer to deal with delicate stuff when I moved to a new place that didn't have a bath I could hand-wash in, and now I have one I fucking love it. I steamed nearly 100 lolita items with it after I moved and it works well on most things, and even melted the wrinkles away from some items that ironing didn't work well on (there were still about five or six wrikle-prone cotton items neither an iron or steamer work well on, but it was magic at getting wrinkles out of creased velvet wrinkle-prone polyesters that high-temperature ironing might melt).

I used to work in a shop that sold second-hand clothes and this one seems pretty similar quality to the one I used then, only with a smaller tank and shorter vertical bar.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aicok-Powerful-Standing-Vertical-andRetractable/dp/B06XCSZ5GN/

It's not a substitute for cleaning though, although it will freshen things up and sterilise. Steaming and leaving to air out (I sometimes do this twice for stubborn smells on stuff I've bought) works pretty well but it won't get rid of all odours and you will still need to wash stuff after repeated wears. Anything you sweat on will need to be washed eventually so you have to be meticulous about avoiding direct skin contact with delicate pieces.

>> No.9575882

>>9575876
Adding to my first post, I'd also recommend getting a rail if you plan on steaming more than one or two items at a time (or if you have any longer-length pieces, since that steamer's hanging attachment is pretty short and won't fit long dresses). Stuff gets damp after steaming and you need to leave it out for a while to dry off. I've had this cheap IKEA one for two years and it's held up fine:
http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small-storage-organisers/racks-stands/mulig-clothes-rack-white-art-60179434/

Another protip for if stuff isn't drying well and you don't have the patience to wait / if you've had to steam something last-minute before a meet: use a hairdryer on it to help it dry faster. Works for me.

Don't be tempted to steam stuff hanging on the back of a door or off a tall chest of drawers if you don't have a rail either. Steam can strip paint, wallpaper and varnish, which will fuck up the furniture even if you're lucky enough not to have it colour transfer onto your clothes.

Hey I know someone asked for a quick review om the F+F bloomers I meantioned ordering last thread and they just arrived today!
The black pair has the same lace as the stock photos but the white are different. Im kind of bummed because the main reason I bought them was because of the lace used in the stock photos to go with some old school items that are super short on me. The black look fine worn but the white ones are a bit longer and kind of just look like they are hanging there like saggy shorts? Im not really sure what to do except pull the legs high enough sp the leg band is tight around my thigh but then I dont really get much of that peeking bloomer vibe

Maybe the leg hole in the white pair is too wide so it doesnt give the fit and flair effect? Or maybe its the lace that lays limp. I have them tied as tight as they go. They are only about an inch longer then my black pair but as you can see the white hangs down way past my knees.

Sorry for the dirty mirror my dogs always try to check out "that other dog" in the mirror. Maybe ill try to take better photos when my boyfriend is home later to help.

I recently purchased this JSK, and am hoping to do an old-school themed coord.

I'd love to make an apron for the JSK, but I'm undecided if I should go for a half apron or a full apron. And if so, am I better off going for a plain trim, or using a similar lace to the piece?

Oregon lolita here. Nothing has happened to anyone in our comm as far as we have heard. So, my best guess is it was either someone who never joined the comm that passed away or an ultra rich Chinese girl in our comm that lives in Eugene got bored of part of her wardrobe (which wouldn't be surprising since she seems to regularly make purchases that total thousands of dollars at a time and all her wardrobe pics show her spare lolita room being overcrowded).

I'm getting a very 90s vibe from this dress (although it might just be the blue velour making me think that) and I think it'd be perfect for first-issues-of-FRUiTS-era styling. And it has pockets! The first line of the listing is "キャサリンコテージのワンピースです" which literally translates to "Catherine Cottage's OP", anon. Even using Google translate gives you enough of a workable translation to understand that. (Google translates it as "It is one piece of Katherine cottage".)

Hey I was waiting to confirm but I believe this is probably from 2000 or earlier, maybe 2001 at the latest? If I remember right the tag on this on Lacemarket was the jumbled Meta font, and I have 2 Meta pieces with that same font now, one unknown one and one that is their angel headdress (which I just got from the mail today, hence why I was waiting to confirm). According to lolibrary the headdress is from 2000, so I assume this is from a similar time. I'm not sure when they changed their tag over next, but if anyone has a concrete dateable piece from them with a different tag, then we could pinpoint the latest year your dress could be from.

I have dresses from 2001 that had switched to the new tag at that point. I believe they used that old tag from the 90's until early 2001. I had a piece that I thought was 2002 that had that tag, but I think it may be newer and was just re-released in 2002 (it was a plain white skirt).
