Anons how do I get over my irrational fear of buying more than one of the same merch of my characters? My second bag I'm working on the fandom is still semi-underground but my husbando is the fan favorite so his merch is few but expensive. I just can't train myself to justify spending $15 each on a single strap. How do y'all do it?

Make a budget for you bag.
Allocate the funds- some for the bag itself, the canbadge/buttons, straps, pins, charms, whatever

Plan out your bag as specifically as possible- how many straps? Where? Do you plan to handmake any items?

So, if you have a hard time justifying the straps, try to get them used or use less of them. Buttons are probably the cheapest.

$15 per strap sucks but it's not the worst. Be glad you're not like the FGO anon where the straps were double that.

If you want this hobby to be for you but are stingy with your money, budget and save up a cash pool for only merch so when you finally have a decent cushion built up you don't have to feel so bad spending it. Even just putting away $20-40 per pay check will give you a nice little spending money at the end of the month. Like the other anon said, being tight fisted with money and itabagging don't go hand in hand.

FGO/Gilgamesh anon here. I second making a budget and adhering to it every month (although I'm bad about it because my grip on my wallet is loose for my husbando, with his recent rate up in FGO NA I'm severely broke, and that's not counting my amiami packages which are 90% him. Learn from my mistakes. Don't be like me.).

It make take longer to finish it, but it'll be a fun long-term project and getting a few packages every month is super nice! Also, I suggest being constantly on the lookout for good deals on auctions. I've gotten lucky with some merch for really cheap.

What is the average practical price to sell rubber straps? I recently bought a box set but I'm only keeping half so I'll be selling the rest soon. Does $8 sound like too much? Look into glue dots, I think those come off easier.

I reorganized my bag for Japan Expo, added new badges and replaced all the pictures by better quality ones, and I like it better now. Thanks to an enormous stroke of luck, it turns out that illustration on the 30th anniversary exclusive trading card that was given out at JE was of him (I would have bet on Cloud or Lightning since Square Enix is pushing them pretty hard, but I'm not complaining) so of course I looted a bunch, and now I need to rearrange it again to make a 4th card fit !

Another thing that makes me think they branded generic bags is how inconsistent they seem about their own advertised features, like whether there is one d-ring at the top or two. Fakes also seem to vary with this. I'm especially curious about the metallic versions, since those look most identical materials-wise to me.

Consider what you're doing to the bag and what type of bag it is. This is mostly a common question. Canvas can be sewn/punctured and has the ability to self heal (minimally visible damage/holes when fabric is rubbed etc) while faux leather and vinyl do not self and will leave obvious marks when sewn/punctured and vinyl may even tear. The glue may rip off the top layer of the faux leather or it may melt/warp the vinyl depending on the glue. If using something like glue dots, damage will be minimal but decorations may not be as secure.

It just depends on what you want to do and how permanent you want it to be. I used E6000 to put my base trim down then hot glue for the trim on top of the trim. This was on a small Wego crossbody. My other two bags (a Wego shoulder bag and Zakkamart shoulder bag) my alterations were done to the base and not the vinyl. I basically made a cover for my base and kinda tacked that in place, then sewed on all my decorations.

If you don't want to alter your bag permanently, consider adding things like bows to the straps or attaching a beaded chain. You can always just focus on the insert decorations, too.

I've found 30+ pieces of official merch in the last week that fit my criteria of "happy and/or human Alphonse, but no CoS" not including a couple additional Xiao Mei and Mei Chang pieces, pie charms, flowers, and cat charms. Japanese secondhand sites, vague keywords, and patience are the way to go. There's an Alphonse shaped phone charger out there if you look hard enough.

Two other interesting things I found are official pre-inked stamps of his :3 face that I plan to use for custom buttons. If I have any space whatsoever left, I'm going to make large badges from the final chapter, there's several lovely panels of him in it, and coloring them specifically with my bag in mind could tie the whole thing together palette wise.

What's the general opinion on making itabags with multiple characters from different series on the same bag? I know that kind of runs counter to the idea of a mobile character shrine but I wonder if it would look alright if they followed a theme of sorts.

Basically I want to make a bag for my webcomic husbandos but webcomic merch is incredibly limited and there's no fan merch market at all for most of them. I have the A4 size and their quality is pretty solid. Definitely like them better then Salus since the vinyl on Salus messenger bags tend to wear and tear easily. The pleather material feels pretty nice and smooth. I really like the canvas insert that it comes even if it's pretty plain. Putting a cute fabric cover over it solved that problem though

The acrylic charm close to the centre gets a bit lost with the busy background. I'd recommend taping over the back with something to make it stand out more. And I think the little licence plate looking charm getting cut off looks a bit awkward. But otherwise, All Might is looking all right!

How do you guys feel about resin charms on bags? Like with pictures of the character in them or "waifu" or whatever. Do you think they look out of place?

Glitter always looks like total ass in photos but RL it's really not as bad. If you have a lighter colored character sometimes you can't even see it.

I can understand if you like that kind of thing to use them for like jewelry and whatever, but for you bag it's just... There are better ways to DIY stuff for your honey. I guess it really depends on if it's something exactly like in your picture, of if they actually made something that looks nice/works well because they have more experience with resin. I don't enjoy the letters inside the resin for bags (or for anything really), I just think it looks tacky in a grade school way.

Characters in resin can be done well but I just don't think the common "Resin Etsy Crafts" style is the way to do it.
