You have to realize that most of /cgl/ (at least the cosplay/conventions side of it) is made up of crossboarders who don't actually cosplay. They come to this board because their friends convinced them to go to a convention with them, and they often keep posting here afterwards.

That's why there's such a disconnect between the opinions of /cgl/ and the rest of the community. Walk up to a cosplayer at a convention or ask on therpf and almost all of them will tell you that they don't think negatively of "bad" cosplayers, they're just happy to see the hobby grow and realize that "bad" cosplayers are probably just newbies.

The crossboarders that infest this board, on the other hand, don't care about cosplay as a subculture. They went to one or two conventions and now consider themselves an expert on the topic, taking to /cgl/ to make fun of all the "le cringey!" cosplayers. Any cosplay they see becomes a vehicle for nitpicking and bullying.

Anyone who tries to bring up this fact is met with the "sorry you got posted!!!!11" meme. They'll never actually debate your points, since they know you're right.

If you want quality cosplay discussion, hit up local facebook groups or websites that cater to hardcore costumers (like the aforementioned rpf).

Oh, and if you need any proof of this, look up photos of any /cgl/ meetup. Very few cosplayers, and the ones who are cosplaying are in a simple joke costume.

The issue is that cosplay newbies come here and see all the nitpicking and bullying, and think that this is what the community is like. I can't count all the posts I've seen where people were hesitant to go to a con or wear a costume because of the stuff they've seen on here. When a forum actively drives people away from the community, there's a problem.

Not to mention all the hate that members of the community get from people on here. Why should any subculture be okay with people who harass others in the subculture, especially when most of the people they're harassing have done nothing wrong? This is mainly an issue when those people leave this board and start harassing them on their social media or even at a con.
