The Way We Live Now is one of my favorite period dramas.... it's really long though. I usually only make it through the first half. Has Mathew McFadden (Mr. Darcy in the newer P&P) and Cilian Murphy (played Scarecrow in Batman) in it, so for eye-candy alone it's worth a watch.

All gothic, all aesthetic, all able to be appreciated by anyone who isn't immediately turned off by someone who is repulsed by anything out of the ordinary. The torture I'll credit you as being unapologetically not-lolita, but in the context of the film, it has a distinct purpose. It's not squicky if you're invested in the story and absolutely not fucked up if you care at all about the progression of the plot, the visuals, the actors, the costume design, the soundtrack, anything.

Le Roi Danse - some good ol' fashioned Louis XIV and his lavish fucking house
Livid/Livide (2011) - french horror film about a ballet school, also vampires.
Memories of Matsuko - musical directed by the same dude who made kamikaze girls, just as quirky but also terribly sad with musical numbers!! watch this if you need to rend your heart to shreds.
Gormenghast - BBC miniseries based on Mervyn Peake's novels, a gothic 'fantasy of manners' type thing with a young and incredibly beautiful Jonathan Rhys Meyers in period costume. 'nuff said.
Mala Morska Vila - beautiful russian adaptation of the little mermaid. the soundtrack is superb. spring to get a high-def version instead of watching it on youtube for the costume design.
Panna A Netvor - quintessential must-see for any gothic lolita, a czech adaptation of beauty and the beast. if you like gargoyles, crumbling castles, organ music and stockholm syndrome, this is the movie for you.
Return to Oz - if you liked 'alice in wonderland' but felt like it wasn't creepy enough, try this!
The Affair of the Necklace - the real life drama for this was interesting enough, but now you get to watch it with extra fancy dresses.
Dangerous Liasons - this one's a given.

I lover her backgrounds and clothes, but her stories aren't interesting enough to carry her "How to Draw Manga Volume 1: Let's Draw Expressions!" faces. I've tried to read Emma five times now but the character art is so bad so as to be distracting.

It's like she draws people like every stereotype and negative criticism of the manga art style. Tilt the eyes up or down or slap on a different hairstyle and boom, different character. Eyebrows up, ecstatic jpy! Eyebrows down, soul crushing sadness.

From someone who is so technically gifted I know she can do better, why she doesn't is beyond me. Her stories simply aren't good enough to say that she's trying to have the characters be bland on purpose not detract from her backgrounds or clothes.

I remember this really ruined the film for me. I've seen lolita dresses better and more flowy than whatever that thing was. It was so transparent it was toned down on purpose for marketing, like maybe they'll sell it as a wedding dress later. Is it even historically accurate? Belle stuck out in it and it was distinctly modern looking in comparison.

I really despise this kind of marketing. As if we couldn't tell it's cheap as hell so you can sell a replica in Hot Topic. It stings even more when you know some talented cosplayer out there could have handled it better and would have jumped at the chance to be historically accurate yet marketable.

Overall I liked the Disney version better but the French version had infinitely better aesthetics. The French plot felt more fairytale-ish in good and bad ways. The largest drawback for me was that I never cared about a single one of the characters, I didn't care at all whether they had a happy ending or not. At least in the Disney movie I liked the characters even if the visuals were disappointing.

I can see that. I hated Disneys Belle even when I was a kid, but that's because there was something there *to* hate. Whether you think she came across as a priss little princess whose entire plot was that she thought she was better than everyone and everyone around her was simple because they weren't like her or whether you saw her as an independent free spirit, it's because this was a character written with personality.

Belle in La Belle et La Bete was just unobjectionable to the point of blandness. I can't say I disliked her or liked her because she was just kind of there.

But I did prefer the Beast's story in the French version. I loved the Greek mythological/old world (like Friedrich La Motte Fouque) tragic backstory, if only because I absolutely was not expecting it.

On that vein: Friedrich La Moutte Fouquet's Undine, Goethe's Faust, Heinrich Heine's De Allemagnes, Les Orientales by Victor Hugo.

I've been really digging Edward Gorey's work lately. His silhouettes are definitely long and thin (mix of Edwardian and 1920s flappers?), but but I get massive gothic aesthetic feels from it. I finally got a copy of the Gashlycrumb Tinies (alphabet book) for my birthday, and it's perfect.

He was a nonsense writer, so if you like Lewis Carroll's writing you might like his.

A good classic/gothic Lolita book with that kind of winsome macabre, very much a dark Victorian style fairytale. Beautiful, almost singsong prose, and fans of mangas like Cardcaptor Sakura and Gakuen Alice might enjoy the characters.

Plenty of people wear corsets every day without needing juice diets. I'm regular sized (32, 24, 36) and my comfortable/going out shopping corset is 20 inches. It is just there. It doesn't restrict me or anything. I do my sewing, pattern drafting, painting, tv watching, whatever with it one just as I do a bra. I like the way it looks and it neither hurts nor hinders me (except I'm using it to try and get better posture a sit really calls attention when you're slouching.)

Yep, I don't doubt that. That was her convenient reasoning, though. I've never worn a corset (though I have worn an obi with all the reinforcements, which I hear can produce a similar effect on posture) and I understand that they can be quite comfortable. I was dying of curiosity to see that movie for the costumes. When it turned out the costumes were crap, what's the point? This is a thread on a Costumimg board and everyone in this thread has been giving better costume movie alternatives to Beauty and the Beast, how's that 'a commercial'?

The costumes themselves may not be egl (though the first season palettes for Lucrezias are pure sweet, where the second season jewel tones are perfect for classic, and the third season metallics good for classic/aristo) but Lucrezias journey from gentle and pure to ruthless and cunning seem pretty tonally right.

Has anyone mentioned the German (and Takarazuka) musical Elisabeth? A story set around a royal woman driven to ennui by her pampered royal life and growing increasingly obsessed with the personification of death and her own fantasies of being Titania in a fairy world as well as the 'Death and the Maiden' storyline seems perf for EGL.

I have to say I like the movie Ludwig better than I like Sissi the series. Sissi tried too hard to make the narcissistic and selfish, if indeed long suffering, Elisabeth into Cinderella.

What I love about Ludwig and the musical is they both point out the absurd hipocrisy of Sissi's deep infatuation with herself and her alleged suffering. While yes, rigors of court life sucked, and her mother in law was a pain, this was Europe leading up to World War One: you had wars, famines, brutal winters, people losing their families and children, and here was the Empress whining endlessly about how hard she had it.

And her lack of empathy didn't just cover her adopted homeland, either. She bitched and moaned about the unfairness of her mother in law raising Rudolph then when Franz Josef caved and gave Rudolph to Sissi, she couldn't have cared less for him. Sissi never cared much for Rudolph until after he'd died, when suddenly she became the grieving mother calling for her son, further playing into the narrative she'd constructed for herself as being the victim of the world.

Even her efforts with Hungary had more to do with her power struggle against Sofie than any kind of genuine empathy.

I swear, between Sissi of Austria and Alexandra of Russia, World War One can be quickly summarized as: when your mother tells you not to marry that crazy bitch, don't marry that crazy bitch.

So there's the contrast of opulence/beauty and degradation/horror that Dolores lacked. Sissi is for great EGL material. Momoko in SM really seemed to channel that a lot.

Elisabeth, like EGL, focuses on a romanticized horror-- Elisabeth in the handsome personification of death via Der Todd, and EGL (specifically the gothic and guro subsects) through a likewise sanitized version of the macabre- clean skulls, paint made to look like blood, coffin imagery. The storybook idea of horror, "scary" looking but safe.

The horror in Lolita is the antithesis of this clean, romanticized idea of horror. I'd even argue that's the whole point. Humbert Humbert thinks he's a romantic and tells the audience he's a romantic while he's driving an underage girl around trashy places and raping her in shady motels.

He wants to believe and he wants the audience to believe this is romantic, larger than life, and ethereal- but in reality it is the bleakest kind of horror: a realistic horror. There is no romance there. This is humanity at its worst.

Let's say Hades and Persephone could be seen as romanticized horror- he steals her away into the night and kidnaps her into the land of the dead to make her his Queen. It's terrifying (she's taken to the land of the dead,) but the outlandishness and otherworldliness of it makes it safe, and therefore easy to romanticize. We cannot see humanity in Hades or Persephone because they're otherwordly beings in an otherworldly setting.

There is nothing safe or romanticized about Lolita because it is glaringly, terrifyingly realistic. People like Humbert Humbert don't think, "I'm going to do a horrible thing because I'm a horrible person," they think, "I am a good person, my acts are justified, it's society that's wrong because it can't understand me."

That bare faced realism is the antithesis of EGL as so much of EGL is based around escapism. What makes Lolita a remarkable book is that it's about a macabre truth anyone can recognise: not all monsters think they're monsters.

Good luck with your German studies, anon! It's not an easy language to master but if you want to read the German masters in the original language, I guess that's a worthy and motivating goal. Heard about Keeping Up Appearances, Gossip Girl and Downtown Abbey

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries for, I dunno, people who like 1920s flapper style? Miss Fisher has great outfits and her sidekick Dot is adorable. I've only seen 6 episodes and it's a bit cheesy, but still fun.

Maleficient and Over the Garden Wall for mori girls. The latter is a bit dark, but it's a Halloween thing. I really love the autumn aesthetic.

I also reccomend Něco z Alenky, a stop motion Alice in Wonderland adaption thats much creepier than it is cute. Pic related.

I have so far enjoyed Paradise and Empresses in the Palace. The latter is not just as lolita but it's absolute eye candy and entertaining. If you like the premise of Mr. Selfridge I recommend The Paradise. It's set several decades earlier and is also about people setting up the first department store in the region, but (imo) with much better acting, character development and individual storylines. I watched The Paradise before Mr. Selfridge and had trouble getting into the latter because the main character is such a clown in comparison.

They seem to get associated more with steampunk, and I've seen them dress vaguely that way at times (mostly just in the sense of dressing Victorian), but the music feels a lot more lolita than steampunk to me.
