Gothic stuff:

Literature: Dracula, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Rebecca, Anne Rice stuff, Pengiun's Horror Series (I love the American Supernatural Stories, but the whole series look gorgeous), A Picture of Dorian Gray, Carmilla, basically anything Edgar Allen Poe, The Turn of the Screw, The Night Circus,

Films: Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, Crimson Peak, Penny Dreadful, Interview with a Vampire, What We Do in the Shadows (very silly, but very gothic), Sleepy Hollow

Classic stuff:

Literature: Books of fairytales (Andrew Lang's "Coloured Fairytales" are great if you want a collection), Anne of Green Gables, The Secret Garden, Jane Austen stuff, A Great and Terrible Beauty (this leans slightly gothic, but its a more fantasy than gothic in my mind), Bright Young Things (slightly later time period than usually gets associated with lolita, but it really captures the infighting and bitchiness of all girl subcultures),

Films: Marie Antoinette, whatever your favorite version of Pride and Prejudice is, live action adpatations of Disney Princess movies (Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, etc)

Not really a fan of sweet, so I can't help you there, sorry.

Pic related is one of the gorgeous dresses from Crimson Peak.

This is slightly off-topic, but if you're interested in dolls as well, could I possibly recommend Bleuette dolls? They were a French doll produced from 1905 to 1960 and available through a related weekly periodical call "La Semaine de Suzette" or "Suzette's Week" and were basically the ball-jointed American Girl-like doll franchise of their time:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleuette
https://www.dolliesdressmaker.com/bleuette/
http://vintagebleuettes.com/bleuetteshistory.htm
http://www.museedelapoupeeparis.com/tempo/tempoenss.html

I'm a bit biased since I have a Bleuette doll myself, but I find they match so well with the lolita aesthetic and they're just so pretty! The main idea is to sew (and crochet, and knit) clothes for them yourself:
http://www.thebleudoor.com/BleuettePatternLibraryHome.index.htm
http://ufdc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/bleuette-pattern.pdf

If anyone is interested I have more links and can post them in the Lolita Lifestyle Thread? There's several Bleuette online sewing clubs and there's collectors' conventions as well. I'd love to get a lolita Bleuette collecting/crafting club going or something!

All gothic, all aesthetic, all able to be appreciated by anyone who isn't immediately turned off by someone who is repulsed by anything out of the ordinary. The torture I'll credit you as being unapologetically not-lolita, but in the context of the film, it has a distinct purpose. here's my picks
Fatal Frame/Gekijōban Zero - not nearly as scary as the games, but very spooky & also has a creepy lolita dame featured
Le Roi Danse - some good ol' fashioned Louis XIV and his lavish fucking house
Livid/Livide (2011) - french horror film about a ballet school, also vampires.
Memories of Matsuko - musical directed by the same dude who made kamikaze girls, just as quirky but also terribly sad with musical numbers!! watch this if you need to rend your heart to shreds.
Gormenghast - BBC miniseries based on Mervyn Peake's novels, a gothic 'fantasy of manners' type thing with a young and incredibly beautiful Jonathan Rhys Meyers in period costume. 'nuff said.
Mala Morska Vila - beautiful russian adaptation of the little mermaid. the soundtrack is superb. spring to get a high-def version instead of watching it on youtube for the costume design.
Panna A Netvor - quintessential must-see for any gothic lolita, a czech adaptation of beauty and the beast. if you like gargoyles, crumbling castles, organ music and stockholm syndrome, this is the movie for you.
Return to Oz - if you liked 'alice in wonderland' but felt like it wasn't creepy enough, try this!
The Affair of the Necklace - the real life drama for this was interesting enough, but now you get to watch it with extra fancy dresses.
Dangerous Liasons - this one's a given.

Also for the mori girls among us:
Little Forest: Summer/Autumn
Little Forest: Winter/Spring
The Good Witch of the West

As >>9514987
mentioned, there is absolutely no point in recommending things people have already heard about. The entire point is to introduce others to things they have not already discovered that they may be interested in.

I'm gonna drop a few gothic books and movies in here for anyone that may have any interest:

The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio
The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat by Oliver Sacks
The Loved Dead and Other Tales by C.M. Eddy Jr. (Part of an H.P Lovecraft collection later, he did not get enough credit for his work in the story "The Loved Dead")
Dellamorte Dellamore (AKA Cemetery Man) by Michele Soavi
Man Bites Dog by Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux and André Bonzel
The Man Who Laughs by Paul Leni (My favorite movie of all time)

and in addition might I recommend the manga:

GeGeGe no Kitaro by Shigeru Mizuki
Innocent by Shinichi Sakamoto
and the comic books series Livewires by Adam Warren.
I cannot recommend the comic book series Livewires based on its own merit, fashion design or execution, but it is the only comic book series I know that features a gothic lolita in a main role.

Just wanted to also thank >>9512820 for their excellent recommendations.

I finished it all and Idk gull they made it kinda dramatic. I liked the aesthetic well enough if you look at it as something with a more goth veneer. And its woodsy and dreamy enough that I noticed girls in the Mori community like it. But for example, /spoilers that don't work on this board/ the punishment for "losing" the brooch is not that she doesn't get to go to the picnic and try her first ice cream but instead she gets sent back to the orphanage/

I lover her backgrounds and clothes, but her stories aren't interesting enough to carry her "How to Draw Manga Volume 1: Let's Draw Expressions!" faces. I've tried to read Emma five times now but the character art is so bad so as to be distracting.

It's like she draws people like every stereotype and negative criticism of the manga art style. Tilt the eyes up or down or slap on a different hairstyle and boom, different character. Eyebrows up, ecstatic jpy! Eyebrows down, soul crushing sadness.

From someone who is so technically gifted I know she can do better, why she doesn't is beyond me. Her stories simply aren't good enough to say that she's trying to have the characters be bland on purpose not detract from her backgrounds or clothes.

It was so transparent it was toned down on purpose for marketing, like maybe they'll sell it as a wedding dress later. Is it even historically accurate? Belle stuck out in it and it was distinctly modern looking in comparison.

>At least in the Disney movie I liked the characters even if the visuals were disappointing.

I can see that. I hated Disneys Belle even when I was a kid, but that's because there was something there *to* hate. Whether you think she came across as a priss little princess whose entire plot was that she thought she was better than everyone and everyone around her was simple because they weren't like her or whether you saw her as an independent free spirit, it's because this was a character written with personality.

Belle in La Belle et La Bete was just unobjectionable to the point of blandness. I can't say I disliked her or liked her because she was just kind of there.

But I did prefer the Beast's story in the French version. I loved the Greek mythological/old world (like Friedrich La Motte Fouque) tragic backstory, if only because I absolutely was not expecting it.

On that vein: Friedrich La Moutte Fouquet's Undine, Goethe's Faust, Heinrich Heine's De Allemagnes, Les Orientales by Victor Hugo.

Damn do I love me some tragic folk tales.

From now on all feminists will wear gender neutral loose fitting grey shirts and grey pants.

Any deviation from this shall promptly be seen as an act of oppression and attack against all women who are gentle, fragile creatures that must be told what to wear and how to wear it in order to be empowered.

It's like, homegirl. You don't want to wear a corset? You don't have to wear a corset. That's feminism. "I asked the costume designers not to incorporate a corset because I personally don't like them." That's fine. Making a big public fuss about not wearing a corset because you think an article of clothing either is or isn't empowering to women or makes or doesn't make a woman empowered, however, is not feminism. Do you like what you're wearing and you're wearing it of your own free will? Huzzah, you're a feminist. Do you not wear something you don't like? Huzzah, you're a feminist. I'm all here for tearing into Emma Watson for ruining my favorite Disney Princess and butchering a classic animated film.

She's such a self-inflated person living in an echo chamber. She literally threw a fit for 24 hours sitting around in her bed crying and moping the whole day, by her own confession, when a bunch of your common, everyday feminists actually just criticized her behavior. They accused her of being some rich Hollywood "feminist" stuck in an ivory tower, pretending like she was icon of feminism and a saint to girls everywhere. It's so funny because her reaction is not something most people could afford to do and they were absolutely right about her being a spoiled brat prone to tantrums and lacking in all kinds of self-awareness.

Also, the thing about her being a diva is true. Look up the musical Lala Land and Emma Watson and how they turned her down because she simply was "crazy demanding" in all that she asked for. Too bad that couldn't have happened for this movie. Girl can't sing for anything and I have no idea why they're so desperate for her in musicals.

Yeah I think part of the backlash was that the actress for Cinderella said she was on a liquid diet to be able to wear the corset for a whole day during filming and Emma Watson said that this (along with the small waisted silhouette the corset created) was creating unhealthy/unrealistic standards for young girls.

I dunno, that sounds like the same bullshitty PR Watson used with calling herself a feminist.

Plenty of people wear corsets every day without needing juice diets. I'm regular sized (32, 24, 36) and my comfortable/going out shopping corset is 20 inches. It is just there. It doesn't restrict me or anything. I do my sewing, pattern drafting, painting, tv watching, whatever with it one just as I do a bra. I like the way it looks and it neither hurts nor hinders me (except I'm using it to try and get better posture a sit really calls attention when you're slouching.)

Cinderella was set in a pseudo historic setting where women wore corsets the way we wear bras.

If Watson genuinely was worried about a corset causing an unrealistic standard of beauty, why did she wear a bra? Or make up, for that matter?

Yep, I don't doubt that. That was her convenient reasoning, though. I've never worn a corset (though I have worn an obi with all the reinforcements, which I hear can produce a similar effect on posture) and I understand that they can be quite comfortable. Sounds like Cinderella was being laced too tight or something, idk. Tbh, I think while Cinderella's dress was absolutely beautiful, I think her waist was small enough in proportion to her skirt as to look a little bit jarring. Beautiful, but in a way that immediately made me go "whoa her waist so tiny!"

They dropped the ball with Watson going way to far in the other direction. She just looks frumpy.

Depends if you believe there's no such thing as bad press.

I was dying of curiosity to see that movie for the costumes. When it turned out the costumes were crap, what's the point? This is a thread on a Costumimg board and everyone in this thread has been giving better costume movie alternatives to Beauty and the Beast, how's that 'a commercial'?

If there's no such thing as bad press, then why between Watson going on about muh feminisms and Disney going on about how the movie was totes banned from places because the b-line henchman was gay did the movie *still* manage to slip from the top three spot in like three weeks?

The movie sucked, died quickly in the public eye outside of us bitter costume nerds who are still salty that with all that Disney funding the costumes sucked so hard they screen printed embroidery onto their costumes, and hopefully people are starting to no longer see the Disney logo as a reason to excuse crappy films.

As for Audrey Hepburn movies, My Fair Lady is lolita esque in story, but if we're talking clothes, I'm torn between Funny Face and Roman Holiday for Hepburn's more EGL movie.

Also, how about Showtime's The Borgias? The costumes themselves may not be egl (though the first season palettes for Lucrezias are pure sweet, where the second season jewel tones are perfect for classic, and the third season metallics good for classic/aristo) but Lucrezias journey from gentle and pure to ruthless and cunning seem pretty tonally right.

Has anyone mentioned the German (and Takarazuka) musical Elisabeth? A story set around a royal woman driven to ennui by her pampered royal life and growing increasingly obsessed with the personification of death and her own fantasies of being Titania in a fairy world as well as the 'Death and the Maiden' storyline seems perf for EGL.

Also dresses like pictured.

They probably laced her in too fast and too tight, and her job as an actress requires significant exertion on top of having to look perfect for the camera. Plus she was in an extremely conical corset, which is more restrictive and can be difficult to get used to for someone unexperienced with corsets. The key to corseting successfully and comfortably is time, which is something you never have on a movie set.
But Watson totally demonized corsets in her statements. I get that she was banking off of the criticism of Disney princess bodies and trying to contribute to the PR narrative of "feminist" and "real" princesses as empowering, but it came off as ill informed. I'm so sick of Disney trying to be "feminist" and catering to SJWs.

I know it's bait, but I'll address it since some newcomers might be interested: Good literature, yeah, but ironically Lolita is unrelated to the fashion and lifestyle as defined by the Japanese fashion and subculture Lolita.

It lacks any of the key icons of the major styles in egl fashion: opulence, elegance, cuteness, whimsicality, beauty contrasted with horror, fantasy, gothic imagery, or escapism.

Dolores is a regular girl her age, ironically enough nothing about Lolita (Dolores in the book) is Lolita (the Japanese style.) Dolores is a regular girl with regular clothes and a regular lifestyle, the book is not so much about her or anything particularly remarkable about her so much as it's about what obsession looks like through the eyes of an already deranged and sick man who justifies acts of increasing mania by trying to build up his pedophilic obsession into some kind of transcendental love. We use the term monster to see deranged people as inhuman, Nabokov used Lolita to show how a deranged person is not inhuman, but far more terrifyingly, how a deranged person is a human who twists logic and reality in order to justify their acts, no matter how horrific those acts may be.

Damn good reading, but not if you're looking to get lost in the EGL aesthetic. One of the best books I don't think I could ever read again.

I thought the musical was German? But I'll one up you! Sissi wasn't German, but she wasn't Austrian either-- she was Bavarian. (Hapsburg nerdery time? Hapsburg nerdery time.)

I have to say I like the movie Ludwig better than I like Sissi the series. Sissi tried too hard to make the narcissistic and selfish, if indeed long suffering, Elisabeth into Cinderella.

What I love about Ludwig and the musical is they both point out the absurd hipocrisy of Sissi's deep infatuation with herself and her alleged suffering. While yes, rigors of court life sucked, and her mother in law was a pain, this was Europe leading up to World War One: you had wars, famines, brutal winters, people losing their families and children, and here was the Empress whining endlessly about how hard she had it.

And her lack of empathy didn't just cover her adopted homeland, either. She bitched and moaned about the unfairness of her mother in law raising Rudolph then when Franz Josef caved and gave Rudolph to Sissi, she couldn't have cared less for him. Sissi never cared much for Rudolph until after he'd died, when suddenly she became the grieving mother calling for her son, further playing into the narrative she'd constructed for herself as being the victim of the world.

Even her efforts with Hungary had more to do with her power struggle against Sofie than any kind of genuine empathy.

I swear, between Sissi of Austria and Alexandra of Russia, World War One can be quickly summarized as: when your mother tells you not to marry that crazy bitch, don't marry that crazy bitch.

So there's the contrast of opulence/beauty and degradation/horror that Dolores lacked. Sissi is for great EGL material. Momoko in SM really seemed to channel that a lot.

I want to preface this post by saying I have never seen the source material for Elisabeth. It looks absolutely lovely, I take no offense to it, and I look forward to watching it. It does not detract or add to anything I have to say about Lolita.

However:

Lolita absolutely does degrade and offend. It takes a beautiful subject matter and degrades it, through the perspective of a warped, confused and mentally ill man. It inspires horror, through the eyes of that man. It absolutely is a subject of something more than just a regular novel, an ordinary novel. It is about an ordinary girl but the lenses through which she is seen means much more than just her ordinary presentation.

Again, not trying to detract from Elisabeth. I've never seen it so I have no idea how it contrasts with Lolita. Just saying that Lolita absolutely has horror and elements of degradation.

>> No.9527531

>>9527454
>Lolita absolutely has horror and elements of degradation.

Absolutely, but a very different kind of horror.

Elisabeth, like EGL, focuses on a romanticized horror-- Elisabeth in the handsome personification of death via Der Todd, and EGL (specifically the gothic and guro subsects) through a likewise sanitized version of the macabre- clean skulls, paint made to look like blood, coffin imagery. The storybook idea of horror, "scary" looking but safe.

The horror in Lolita is the antithesis of this clean, romanticized idea of horror. I'd even argue that's the whole point. Humbert Humbert thinks he's a romantic and tells the audience he's a romantic while he's driving an underage girl around trashy places and raping her in shady motels.

He wants to believe and he wants the audience to believe this is romantic, larger than life, and ethereal- but in reality it is the bleakest kind of horror: a realistic horror. There is no romance there. This is humanity at its worst.

Let's say Hades and Persephone could be seen as romanticized horror- he steals her away into the night and kidnaps her into the land of the dead to make her his Queen. It's terrifying (she's taken to the land of the dead,) but the outlandishness and otherworldliness of it makes it safe, and therefore easy to romanticize. We cannot see humanity in Hades or Persephone because they're otherwordly beings in an otherworldly setting.

There is nothing safe or romanticized about Lolita because it is glaringly, terrifyingly realistic. People like Humbert Humbert don't think, "I'm going to do a horrible thing because I'm a horrible person," they think, "I am a good person, my acts are justified, it's society that's wrong because it can't understand me."

That bare faced realism is the antithesis of EGL as so much of EGL is based around escapism. What makes Lolita a remarkable book is that it's about a macabre truth anyone can recognise: not all monsters think they're monsters.

No, the musical was written and developed by the "Vereinigte Bühnen Wien", which makes it an entirely Austrian production. But you're completely right about Sissi being Bavarian! Which of course, from an Austrian point of view, makes her almost Austrian, as Bavarians are culturally and linguistically much closer to Austria than to the rest of Germany.

I too like the musical better, out of the same points you listed. The movies are visually beautiful and nice to watch, but they are glorifying Sissi to no end and don't deal with her really problematic character traits and decisions.

I swear that Bavarian royal line was cursed. Was it Helene who had been sent to an asylum for health issues then died when the asylum had a faire to raise funds for the poor and caught fire? That whole family's story is nothing but the mixture of the beautiful and the morbid.

Also, since I'm guessing you're Austrian, I am d y i n g to get more of the northern romances but my German isn't there yet. Goethe's further works, Heinrich Heine's further works, and all I got is "Das kind drinkst wasser."

People talk a lot about Grimms fairy tales, but Grimms Fairytale are the absolute tip of the iceberg of northern folklore, especially in the Romantic period. Heine's De Allemagne, Goethe's Erlkonig, Johann Karl August Musaus' Der Geraubte Schleier, none have been translated to English and Duolingo has had me on "Er trinkst" and "Nein, bis morgen" for what feels like f o r e v e r.

Your understanding is incorrect. It's about a pedo trying to justify his gross interest in a 13 year old. He rapes her, becomes her step dad and forces her to give him sexual favours while they play house. A big plot point is lolita running away from Humbert, because she hated it. No love there.

I have so far enjoyed Paradise and Empresses in the Palace. The latter is not just as lolita but it's absolute eye candy and entertaining. I have few period dramas more in my own list but I'm currently watching Mr. Selfridge which is more 1920's so I will maybe be back with few more recommendations in the future.

This stirred so much drama in the mexican lolita comm, but being taco myself, I only see accuracy.
No, I'm not joking. Please stop being so blind and accept that some of those things are indeed happening in Mexico, my taco-chans.
>ya mama screams ands snaps fingers at you
>walking downtown trough old looking streets -and cellphone vendors- and getting weird looks/someone wanting your picture
>at the comm's party you're the only one well dressed and everybody else is ita or mediocre
>random cholito guy hitting on you
>drinking indio on the back of a truck (you don't have to be in lolita to do this btw)
COME ON you know this happens. Saying that "it gives us a bad reputation" is actually bad, since the girl is well dressed (although payed to do so) and our general reputation is that we coord as ugly as sin.

Sage for no contribution but -

Thank you so much to everyone here who recommended books. I've put them on my ebook reader, and I'll start working through them as soon as possible. I've been an uncultured swine my entire life, and I want to turn that around. Broadening your horizons is key to being a stable and interesting adult, which is a top priority to me right now as I'm attempting to roll out of NEETdom at mach speed.

I'll start by wading through the books that are high school staples and work from there. All I remember of high school reading lists was that I hated Great Expectations with a fiery passion. My literature teacher was obsessed with it for some reason so we watched two different movies and a TV series and read two different versions of the book... It was... awful...

If you like the premise of Mr. Selfridge I recommend The Paradise. It's set several decades earlier and is also about people setting up the first department store in the region, but (imo) with much better acting, character development and individual storylines. I watched The Paradise before Mr. Selfridge and had trouble getting into the latter because the main character is such a clown in comparison.

Hopefully music is relevant enough. I saw a lot of Victorian literature mentioned so I thought I'd bring up Rasputina.
