The reason I hate stories about threats heard through grapevines is they're usually exaggerated or completely false. If the email did in fact exist, it should be reported to authorities. Finding out who sent it really isn't that hard. Moreover, spreading the rumor of a threat is just as bad as making it. Yes, people should be aware of their surroundings but they need not be unjustly paranoid. Most of the time I hear about crap like this at cons, it's just teenage edgelords trying to stir up shit.

It's just common sense though; Don't go anywhere alone. If you're not there with friends, security should be willing to escort you if you feel unsafe or any hotel employee. Don't be afraid to ask.
