As for SU cosplay plans and stuff, I was Blue Diamond at sakuracon but probably won't wear that again because I made it very fast and I'd have to pretty much remake the whole thing. Might redo Peridot? I also reeally want to make a rose quartz wig just for fun but that would take a lot of time so I don't know if I'll ever get around to that.

Aaand here's one of the few pics I have of blue diamond. The sewing was noticeably bad on a few parts so I didn't bother getting full body pics. I think the makeup turned out fairly okay? I still need a lot of practice with that (and also this pic has filters and shit) but some critique could be good. I used eyeshadow for all the shading, is that the ideal way to do this?

I think the lace is an interesting idea and can work well if the rest of the costume (particularly the wig) looks like it belongs with it,if that makes sense? Like perhaps going slightly more realistic with the curls or if she has a sword/shield add more details to those too. Anyone else agree with this?

OC here. I couldn't sleep anyways, may as well take in some critiques. Please bare in mind, these photos are taken on a phone with an absolute shit quality camera.

This cosplay is only about 50% complete, the layers are only pinned together. Here's a snap without the top two tiers of lace.

Honestly I feel like it is so boring without the lace. Cosplay doesn't always have to be so literal, but hey that's just my take on it.

The bodice is cut hi-lo with a corset back. I made it as two separate pieces rather than one dress.

Haven't gotten to styling the wig yet, I've bought 4 to begin with and read through some tutorials but I'm open to suggestions. Unfortunately I will not have enough time (or $ for the matter) to get her sword and shield done before Acen. :(

The I really like the design. I LOVE when people put a bit of artistic freedom into cosplays. It really makes them special and unique! I also see nothing wrong with that lace. Its just a bunch of lolitas is with scepters up thief ass :/ its not Lolita lace by any means, but perfectly fine for cosplay!! I do however agree with that other anon, where you should keep with the more earthy pinks and realistic look with the rest of the cosplay. It will really tie it all in :)

I was afraid of using actual bridal lace because a) it's so expensive and b) if I did that I probably would have gone ahead and hand dyed all the fabrics for the bottom tiers. I am not that comfortable in the craft yet, but I'm always open to ideas for future remakes. What would you suggest I made the top piece out of instead? The top tier was the cheapest part of this garment? I only spent $40 for that fabric, it was what was available locally. Honestly the photo quality does no justice, the top tier isn't even color accurate. Thats why Im thinking they should just admit they bought the top part and chopped it. Its absolutely nothing like anything else in the garment. Actually looks expensive. Any smart cosplayer would've made it all look the same because throwing that up against the plain fabric over that lace from the second photo looks tacky as fuck and doesn't match at all. Its fine if you bought it, but don't play it off like bridal satin + ties + boning to make a corseted top is cheaper than all that curtain trim covering the rest of the dress and then on top of that putting regular shitty looking cotton blend.

Body paint if done right looks great but is hard to achieve especially with con conditions and can go horribly wrong if the cosplayer goes with cheap paints. I think the morph suit, so long as it fitted properly, is a cleaner looking alternative. I agree, the nails are a nice touch!

i personally love what you're doing with the lace, but i agree the white should have some subtle texturing, or else the lace (which has very visible, defined patterns) and the bodice (plain and seems to be comparatively smooth) will clash. it may not be viable now if you're making a deadline, but maybe if you do another next iteration of the dress, give it some thought? (sort of like pic related.) i'd keep the texture very subtle though, or else it'd make the dress too busy.

conversely, the reason some people might not like in this thread is because large blocks of lace can be a hard sell, and thick layers of lace toward the bottom of the dress gives it a heavy look toward the bottom. i like the lace you used here and how you dyed it, bit its true it's a bit of an eyeful. i think everyone mistaking your construction for a wedding dress is a good sign though-- maybe check out more wedding dresses to see how they like to balance out their lace?

The ridiculous hairstyles of SU cover ears. Ears aren't considered a focal point as they are on the sides of the head and aren't as likely to be seen.
A lack of a nose, which the other gems have (besides Jasper), is far more noticeable and definable as a character trait. It's like a Sapphire with her bangs parted showing two eyes. Not quite Sapphire. An Aquamarine with a nose, when those covering prosthetics (think Voldemort) exist, falls a little short of accuracy. It just draws more attention to the cosplayers' FIRST urges over accuracy to the character.

I'm usually super into original takes on the character, especially with simple designs like SU has, but this just looks so tacky. I love the idea of actually trying to keep true to the actual texture of a lapis lazuli gem and including the gold, but this is waaaaay over the top. All the trim looks like cheap Christmas decoration finds. It's so gaudy and ruins what she could have had going with the base. Would've liked to see a more subtle use of the gold. Beading could have looked cool as a different trim option. The makeup needs some serious work as well. It ended up looking like the type of shit you'd see on party store packaging. Maybe if she got rid of the sequins stuck to her face and went for a more true gold color it would be more on the right track.

Sage for OT, but could you explain what needs to get fixed with that eyeliner (I'm assuming on the Peridot)? I'm still learning makeup; is it bad that the eyeliner wings look sharp and cartoony? Would the overexaggerated look "read" better at a distance, or should the person have tried for makeup that looked more natural up close?

Not that anon, but it's super, SUPER out of character. That's like borderline glam makeup. Peridot has very round eyes (they'er god damn circles) and she isn't a glam type of character. The wings are also WAY too fucking big and very distracting.I also think that those falsies are out of place. I like the way Pearl did her eyes, there's enough liner for definition, but it's not crazy, and Lapis' is alright, because she went smaller with her wings, and she's also more of a "pretty" character, at least on the surface. You have to think about what kind of character you're playing when you do makeup. Maybe it's just years of preformance arts experience that makes me specifically more picky about that kind of thing, but the makeup doesn't necessarily have to look just like the character, but it should fit their personality. I honestly think you should go with a much smaller line, smudge the corners out with green, don't do the wing.
