Old thread here >>9425947

Velveteen season is just about over for most of us. Now that it's starting to get warner, what are you planning on wearing?
Do you plan on wearing old school for ILD?
Do you wear old school exclusively?
Do you feel like prices for old school pieces has gone up due to popularity?
What do you think about the general new interest that's been going on for a while with old school, does it annoy or excite you?

As promised, seller pics of Baby's 2002 Tiered JSK. This one's with a weak petti and not no petti.)

(Yes, I found a 2002 JSK that still had the original tag. Even worse, the security tag inside was never removed either! I'm not sure whether it's more likely that it's stolen burando or just a careless shop assistant.)

Seller photos of the tags from the sax JSK also make it look like it's unlined, whatever lolibrary says.

It's also floating around the Western market somewhere in black, since I found an ld listing for it on LM. All the pictures have expired but the seller reckons that it has the same sizing as the re-release (lolibrary measurements of 92cm bust and 73cm waist):

Seeing effort go into finding interesting backgrounds for photoshoots is one of the things I really miss about print magazines going. Modern lolita backgrounds tend to be either plain and neutral or cookie-cutter kawaii, so you see a lot less stuff in the street or against "edgy" backdrops.

When you guys wear old school, do you feel it's important to wear it to a T or are you more interested in adding a personal touch? Are you adamant about wearing cotton blouses over chiffon or wearing shoes that are explicitly old school?

>>9446201
I am yeah, honestly I really don't like the modern chiffon blouses much, and personally I really love the chunky shoe look. There aren't really any modern elements I love enough to add them in. Makeup, however, I will attempt to modern-up a bit. The old GLB tutorials are so dated most of the time that I just can't do them to a T, I find them unflattering. I try to take inspiration from them, but I modify them to suit my tastes.

Bobby pin the shit out of it to stop it moving around and, yeah, they look really weird with a lot of hairstyles.

>>9446201
I wear my clothes how I think they look best and I'm not afraid to mix old and new pieces, but I'm scrupulous about accuracy if I'm going to call something oldschool. Authentic early-00s chiffon gothic pieces aside, I wouldn't tag anything with chiffon/modern shoes/tulle lace/whatever as oldschool unless you couldn't tell those details were wrong from the photo (like when black-on-black tulle lace doesn't show up from a distance). I also usually try to do at least one "period-accurate" outfit with all my oldschool pieces just to see how it looks, even if I think a piece looks better coorded in a more modern way.

I try to keep hair and make-up close to the roots but I think there's a bit of leeway about it as long as it fits the aesthetic and/or could plausibly have been worn at the time. OTT make-up usually looks very weird unless it takes heavy inspo from porcelain dolls or VK looks, but I think the more natural the make-up is the more you can get away with techniques that weren't used back then. As an example, I wouldn't ever do insta-brows with oldschool, but other recent trends like Korean straight brows work IMO because they look close enough to the natural brows you sometimes saw back then to blend in. Similarly, even though highlighter didn't even exist in the mainstream in the early 00s, I use subtle highlighter quite a lot to add freshness and dimension to my face - I think it works because it's there specifically to help fake a dewy, natural look like a bare-faced IW model for summery coords which doll-like matte foundation would look weird with (my skin's too bad to actually go without make-up).

>> No.9447041

>>9446286
You have so good points. I have very round and I guess kinda fat face and without highlighter, blush and eye make up I look like a potato. I only use neutral colors and natural lashes though. Also, imo, if your hair is natural you can get away with basically any style. I hate modern wigs in old school. I find them too full and unrealistic but that's just my opinion.

Mayday is approaching so I'm already digging florals out of my closet. Also button downs, it's going to be the rare time I'm able to wear those with underdress/skirt before it comes too hot.

>Velveteen season is just about over for most of us. Now that it's starting to get warner, what are you planning on wearing?
I have a lot of lighter pieces in the mail and I want to try oldschool casual lolita. I've been experimenting with different oldschool legwear like narrow-gauge white fishnets too.

>Do you wear old school exclusively?
No, I have a lot of oldschool but I own modern stuff too. I keep being tempted to switch over though, since the oldschool half of my wardrobe is so cohesive and compared to all of the prints that almost need a different blouse, novelty bag and pair of shoes for every single dress. There's not much overlap between the two halves of my wardrobe as well because most stuff only works for one era, so I feel like I've got double the amount of blouses/shoes/etc that I would if I'd stuck to one or the other.

>Do you plan on wearing old school for ILD?
I was originally planning to wear something OTT but I've just found out I've got to be away from home for a couple of weeks over ILD, so I'm probably going to end up in oldschool because the mix-and-matchabilty makes it easier to pack a few outfits instead of just one or two.

>Do you feel like prices for old school pieces has gone up due to popularity?
Yes, but I think the bigger effect is just more people buying from Japan causing all second-hand stuff to go up in price. Closet Child and Japanese second-hand brand in general was much cheaper a few years ago.

>> No.9451474

>>9451471
>What do you think about the general new interest that's been going on for a while with old school, does it annoy or excite you?
I worry a bit about rare pieces being taken out of circulation by people that don't realise their value, but other than that I think the renewed interest is a good thing. It's definitely nice to have oldschool appreciated and accepted at meets again instead of just being seen as ugly and outdated.

Of course, the amount of people coming into oldschool who are totally clueless about the style piss me off, but what can you do? People praising inaccurate outfits as "Just like a GLB street snap!" when they're nothing alike, or spreading stupid misinformation like "oldschool shoes were only black and white" really grind my gears, but I think producing accessible guides and resources will ultimately just result in even more people who can't be bothered doing their own research entering the style. It's very obvious from some comments and posts on CoF etc that all their exposure to oldschool comes thirdhand from new coords and they've never seen any/many street snaps. It's annoying when one or two popular oldschool lolita's personal style gets mistaken for the be all and end all of oldschool because newbies have never seen anything else.

With my country's weather I could probably wear velveteen for all but 3 months of the year, but I'll just be wearing the rest of my wardrobe since I only have a few velveteen pieces anyway. I don't change much for winter and summer other than add a coat usually

>Do you plan on wearing old school for ILD?
Of course, it's my entire lolita wardrobe

>Do you wear old school exclusively?
I do

>Do you feel like prices for old school pieces has gone up due to popularity?
I think so and it bugs me a bit as I started wearing it before it became trendy one of the factors to me wearing old school was the much cheaper prices

>What do you think about the general new interest that's been going on for a while with old school, does it annoy or excite you?
It makes me happy to see it becoming more acceptable and popular, but with that it annoys me to no end that so many of these 'old school' coords are the laziest definition, and people don't seem to bother doing their homework on what the fashion actually was like.

>Velveteen season is just about over for most of us. Now that it's starting to get warner, what are you planning on wearing?
I'm not much a fan of velveteen, so all my pieces are fairly summer friendly. though the Dutch summers can be quite sweaty, and if I have to get outside in that weather, I usually just wear a skirt-skirt combo or my IW jsk (that's not really oldschool, but still plain enough for my taste) with only a short bolero

>Do you plan on wearing old school for ILD?

just a bit, but they are still fairly cheap compaired to recent releases

>What do you think about the general new interest that's been going on for a while with old school, does it annoy or excite you?
both. I like it if more brands would put out oldschool again, but I would hate it if people would just wear oldschool again because of trends. I like it more if people be rebelious with wearing oldschool

You can look through old scans at brand ads and large-sized street snaps to get inspo, but desu I don't think there is that much of an oldschool-specific style of make-up. Like, we think of oldschool as having it's own distinct style compared to modern lolita, but if you compare non-gothic oldschool make-up to mainstream 90s and early 00s "natural" make-up in Japan it's basically the same thing. It's just a basic natural face using the techniques and products of the era, it's not really something lolita-specific. You can stick to that exact sort of look to be more authentic but unless you're East Asian it won't look the same on you anyway, so I don't think it's wrong to use other techniques (like highlighter, brushes, contour) to achieve the same result as long as you keep it relatively natural.

So I just won this set (Super happy that I'll finally own a Metamorphose lace monster!) I thought it was from 2004 but now I suspect it might even be from 1999? The green from the 2004 listings look much lighter and it's closer to the brown in this1999 version which lists both light green and green, could anyone perhaps confirm this?

This is probably a stupid question, but how do you do an old school gothic coordinate without just doing the classic Mana-clone look? Moitie has a very specific aesthetic that's barely changed in the years it's been around, and a lot of the hallmarks of old school Lolita don't apply (moitie has been using chiffon, tulle lace, light polyesters, and the like since the dark ages. Is it just the heavy makeup, slightly fried hair, and clunky jewelry, and staying more in tune with its v-kei roots that keep it old school?

I guess my question is what makes old school gothic old school?

Many of these still have Moitie items or fried hair or other elements but I tried to look for coords that still might have been what anon was looking for. Different hairstyles, styling etc. If that's not what anon meant then I'm sorry for mistaking it. Not many brands catered to gothic even back then so makes sense there is still going to be lots of Moitie. I hope I didn't get it completely wrong or someone else got inspired or something.

I think old school gothic is inexplicably tied to vkei, since the reason gothic even entered the equation is because of the rise of vkei. Before that, lolita was just natural kei and 1970s gunne sax style dresses. So I don't think it's possible to seperate old school gothic from that look, it might not necessarily be a Mana clone look, but it's very 90s gothic so that's kind of the look.

Hmm. Maybe I wasn't clear, or we're getting our signals crossed. I get what gothic is, I was asking more what made a gothic coordinate old school rather than new school. You hit on some of it with the comment about avoiding looking too classic, I think the modern gothic style takes a few cues from the OTT classic trend. Sorry, I shouldn't chan so much while I'm sleepy.

Now I'm worried that this is going to bring the debates that plague the gothic threads here...

I think you're right in it takes cues from OTT sweet, looking at recent gothic trends and popular lolitas, like Mariedauphine and Voodooodolly and her hats. It's much more opulent, and a huge thing is using really gaudy accessories like giant hats, skulls, and religious iconography. There's still more simple gothic coords, but the main difference to me is in the makeup. I would count the nun trend from a while back as an updated gothic look, since obviously nuns have been a gothic lolita staple from the beginning but the recent way people style it is completely different.

>> No.9456866

>>9456826
I simply think that a lot of gothic hasn't changed that much since back then, apart from adding Taobao prints. A lot of Antique Beast and Moitie designs are virtually unchanged from back then, so it becomes mostly about hairstyling, shoes and accessorizing. Oldschool gothic has much less accessories, and obviously isn't going to use any recent trend items. There are a lot of pieces that people wouldn't recognise as oldschool now.

It might be interesting to know how an oldschool lolita felt about lolita and how she got into it. So I'm finishing the dump with a translation from her blog (sorry, it's only google translate, if someone wants to do a proper translation, go ahead)
This entry is from April 2001 btw.

Awakening to Lolita
To be honest, I did not even know that there is a genre called Roryita until recently.
Why did it suddenly wake up in this year?

That's when L'Arc reset live.
After finishing, there was Gothic Loli near me who was waiting for a friend.
Long hair, head dress, swollen skirt. And cloak.
The hips are also very elegant.
It was a very cute one, and I was always fascinated by it.
It was truly a beautiful gothic lolly.
Oh ... There is such a world.
I thought so.

After that, days of seeing Rolita sites and shops on the net.
The more you see it, the more it will be attracted.
I just could not stand it just by looking and I wanted to do it myself.
And first I bought a wig.
In addition, head dress, clothes etc.
I bought it as quickly and steadily as possessed by something (^ ^;)

And it will arrive now.

About Lolita
Why are you so attracted to Rolita's world like this?
Will girls long for long-term clothes like princess?
For example, wedding dress.
I like it like a kind of Rolita-like clothes.
A skirt that swelled in the head dress (though it is a bit different from that in Lorita).
I think there are people who do not want to wear a wedding dress, but there are many people who wish to wear.
Lolita fashion seems to have an eternal girl property in it.
The girl 's cute and cruelty as well.
I am fascinated by me.
Lolita is bad feeling. There are many people who think so.
But that is personal values. I think that I am cute. So I want to do it.
I want to become a girl looking good by Rolita. I think so.

Genre
The genre of Lolita I want to do.
It is based on black.
Black loli, gothic lolly.
White loli and sweet lolly do not suit me absolutely. (Lol) Kaneko system as well.
I love the whole body black.
I do not have lots of races and frills, it is reasonable to have it.
I like long skirts.
It's like a stuffy shape.
I also like short skirts of the type that give out volumes with pannier, but I like long after all.
Erotic Lolita was also attracted before, but recently I may like an elegant Kanji.
Poisonous Lolita.
I longed for it.

We also want makeup firm.
Or, it is not very unless you make up your mind, but I can not get out in front of people (explosion)

This is a story of the genre that I want to do.
If you see it, I like any genre.
White loli, sweet loli, dolls doll. Panchrome. anything.

Lolita clothes
· · It is high (bitter smile)
I've never been to a brand or something I've never seen before (^ ^;)
Only no brands. Of course children's clothes too.
And I am addicted to the world of Lolita.
Clothes and accessories are also expensive (haha)
I do not care whether I am wearing 20,000 or 30,000 (sweat)
But even though I began to be addicted, I bought it all the while ... (Explosion)
I guess it can not be helped until I have a set of items (laugh)
I thought so and I bought it quickly.
I bought it cute as impulsively as I got a new work.
... Scary (lol)

But it is cute ...

>> No.9458425

>Pt. 5

When?
However, it does not make much sense even if you buy more quickly from cute (^ ^;)
Because there is no opportunity to wear (> <)
I am a full-time housewife. I have two daughters.
I can not wear it very much in my daily life.
High clothes get dirty.
Besides, it is a secret to husband (laugh)

I have a lolita mama who became a friend.
She says Lolita in everyday life.
Mama with two young children.
Everything is good for children, it seems that clothes will not be stained ...
And they both love Lolita! It is!
Parent and child doing loli!
Husband likes Lorita, so ...
I think that it is very nice.

But in my case I can not do it because I am not a good-looking one, as I mentioned earlier.
Then when do you look like Lolita? It is like a kanji.
There is only when it is live.
But I do not do live so frequently.
At most once or twice in 3 months.
The concentrating month concentrates, but sometimes it does not go at all.
On average it is like that.
It looks like it's a cosplay for Lorita.
But it can not be helped.
Sometimes I want to wear clothes that are asexual as Lolita.
In such a case call a friend and wear it together and play (laugh)
It's stress relief (lol)

I know because I saw a bag that looks like yours when I was eyeing this up on auctions and went through all the Meta bag listings on lolibrary (before they changed the site). Damn vague Japanese sellers though, putting "it is over 10 years old" when they know full well it's closer to 20 because they bought it new...I nearly missed out on this because I was too lazy to check and didn't realise it was that ancient.

I wish there weren't so many dead images in old EGL posts, they're so interesting to look back on! Not really aesthetically inspiring though as the western community looked terrible back then - like in this link, there are two good Mana clones and a whole bunch of itas.

Generally the quality standard in EGL back then was horrible - it's actually pretty tedious to search through, since there are so many stupid noob questions and sales posts in the group (EGL sales not existing yet), of the pictures that weren't dead links these are the LEAST ita for that month. There's a lot of stuff that's just random miniskirts with an office shirt...

This piece has been on my wishlist ages, I didn't know it was so old! The seller updated all the photos on the site a couple of years ago and some of the designs have been slightly updated too, but I didn't notice her saying it was that old on her blog post.

>>9462277
It's surprising what they still sell. I think the exact design of the Bat/Cat headdress they sell now is tweaked from the original, but it's been around since 2002:

Event report from Vampire Garden in Osaka from a net.goth in 2004, with description of attendants:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/alt.gothic.fashion/SRlWGmcIECs

>"My favorite outfit was a huge, white dress that looked like a decaying
wedding cake. It had an enormous ruff on it, and several layers of
poofy skirts, and the girl wearing it was smoking a cigarette in a
long holder with a little frilly thing on the end (just before the
cigarette itself) that matched her dress. Her hair (probably a wig)
was a mass of ringlets restrained by various sparkly clips.
Her outfit didn't involve any black that I could see, but it was
decidedly creepy and wonderful.

>There was a mixture of goth, gothic lolita, and sweet lolita styles.
The main sweet lolita I saw had a little pink straw hat with a turned
up brim and a pink sundress with strawberry designs on the bottom edge
of the skirt. She was wearing very high, chunky mary-jane type high
heels. I think they were red, but it was hard to tell in the
lighting. Her hair was in two braids that hung forward over her
shoulders. She was wearing the usual lolita socks.

>I didn't take a closs look at any other sweet lolitas, but I did see
one with a cute pandabear backpack later (or possibly some other cute,
fuzzy animal?).

...

>Make up ranged from subtle on most of the girls to super heavy on most
of the guys. Some of them had tear drops or other little curlycues
drawn on their faces, but I also saw one with a huge design on one
cheek. I think it was supposed to look like an injury... or perhaps
an infestation of a cheek-eating alien. It was interesting looking if
dramatic.

>Another guy was wearing a brocade jacket and pants that finished just
below his knees in a tight cuff. He had sort of a mad aristocrat
thing going on."

I've seen a lolita in a scan with a panda bag before, wonder if it was the same girl.

Late reply, but I was just looking through the beauty tutorials linked in >>9461952 and I was really surprised how many of them included false lashes, even though anons above had said they don't use them. They're so natural you basically can't tell in the results photos, and a lot of the girls don't even seem to have put mascara on their lower lashes - I'm guessing it's because a lot of East Asian girls naturally have very short lashes, but most white or brown lolitas wanting to recreate the look wouldn't need it?

Sorry if my post was vague, I meant recreate the look of a GLB model not recreate having short lashes, lol. I brought it up because I've sometimes seen people say that you shouldn't wear falsies with non-gothic oldschool because they were too OTT, even though they're in a bunch of sweet make-up tutorials from that period.

Just take it to a department store and ask a nice employee if they can take it off for you. They'll understand, this stuff happens all the time and they'll know for sure that you're not trying to steal the dress or have stolen it due to the Japanese tags.

>>9465058
The bubble does not have ink in it; it has a pin and spring. If you don't want to take it to a dept. store to see if they'll remove it, then you can melt the bubble off with a lighter to expose the pin and spring and just dig them out with a screwdriver. If you're careful it shouldn't hurt the dress at all, just do it over a sink in a well ventilated room.

dollar stores sell jewellery pliers (centre pic related) you can use it to cut just under the flat disk on the side with the washing instructions. the bubble, like anon said, is where the pin and spring are (where the magnet lifts to release the pin). i cant remember if the "hook" took works in the little hole there but if it does you dont need to order one. just take a key ring and bend it in a curve shape to match the same curve as the hook device (you can trace an image of one on google to know the curvature) then you just shove it in there to release the pin. i do think that jewellery pliers will work best.
