Maybe the distinction lies in whether one respects it as a fashion or not? I think it's ridiculous to police how/when someone wears their clothes, particularly when lolitas are often trying to establish that they are 'just clothes', but at the same time there are clearly people who love and respect this fashion and are members of the community, and people who don't feel as passionately about the subculture and treat the clothes as more of a costume to play dress up in.

yes, I would, and there's no need to be so defensive, really, I just wanted to know as a lonelita who's never been to a meet/convention or met another lolita. I dress this way and chose this hobby because as soon as I saw it I knew it was for me. I'm not saying that having an alternative introduction to the fashion means your interest in it is invalid at all, I was simply trying to point out the difference between people who appreciate and resonate with elements of lolita fashion and incorporate that into their sense of self and people who do it for other reasons. I believe that's why some people insist so adamantly that there is a way to be a 'true lolita', because they have strong emotional connections to it that others may not understand, and also because of the stigma surrounding the fashion where if you wear it regularly you're going to have to correct stupid people sometimes, so a lot of lolitas seem to be a bit abrasive when it comes to the topic. That's why I'm trying to facilitate this dialogue and hopefully it's been helpful.
