Anyone here is following what's going on with the Malice Mizer's 25th anniversary event?

I think they're going to do a full Malice Mizer concert this time.

From what I was told, they were discussing demo tapes, and the specs and usage of the cassette tapes for their demo reels. Then he went on to talk about the lineup's they had in the past.

I mean we can all hope they will do something. But I'm not going to hold my breath.
They will occasionally do small mini reunions, but never anything really big. So I'm guessing that's what's going to happen again.

There was an interview with Tetsu about his departure for Malice Mizer. I believe he didn't got kicked out of the band but rather he wanted to leave due to musical differencies; he wasn't digging the sissy french pop thingy and wanted to do a more straightforward rock music. In fact his first band after Malice Mizer, Mega8Ball, was this alternative rock band with Tetsu rapping, sounds kinda like RHCP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YcMjuV5oSE
Anyway, maybe he discussed with Mana and got kicked out, I don't know, but at that point in time, even though MM was fairly popular in the indies scene, it was still uncertain how famous they could get.
When Tetsu left in 1994, Malice Mizer was still playing at small venues for maybe 500 or 1000 people max.
In the interview, Tetsu said that he was working a part-time job in 1998 (so this was Zigzo days I guess?), and one night it was raining a lot and he had to work outside, that same day Malice Mizer was playing on the Budokan, so he was like "maybe if I didn't leave that band..."

I know Tetsu is still in contact with Kozi, I think Kozi and Tetsu even played together in some event (I think Kozi with ZIZ and Tetsu with nil, or something).
Would be cool if Kozi manages to get a live event with ZIZ, The Junejulyaugust and Moi dix Mois, and maybe do a few Mizer songs with Tetsu, one can dream.
Tetsu actually played Baroque (or maybe it was Kioku to sora) in one of his solo gigs. He was playing songs from his old bands, also played songs by Zigzo, I think he played them all acoustic, I wonder how the Malice Mizer song was. (Tetsu can actually play acoustic guitar, he played the acoustic guitar on Gogo no sasayaki)

Nowadays? Yeah, in fact I haven't heard news from Michiru in a while, he's probably still producing bands, but I have no idea.
But I mean Michiru was/is the president of Loop Ash and he was one of the most famous (in the indies scene) guys who wore gothic lolita.
This was in the early 00s when Schwarz Stein still didn't exist, and when Rudolph/SS appeared and became famous thanks to Mana, Kaya was wearing more gothic/S&M kind of outfits, not really lolita, I think the first time I saw Kaya in lolita was after SS broke up.
But yeah, Kaya does wear lolita and is probably a lolita referent, and Michiru is probably unknown for many people, but back in 2000/2001, Michiru was one of the most famous goth loli guys in VK.

Kibouya is great, and the songrwriter/vocalist is Eiji, who was in various other bands.
Kibouya Honpo actually was a "part 2" of a previous band called Himitsu Kessha Codomo A, they were fairly popular in the indies scene back then.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRKSegJUqlU
And before Codomo A, there was Macaroni:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICwjwnHnDRU
And before that, a bunch of other rather obscure bands.
After Kibouya Honpo he teamed up with Takken from Codomo A/Kibouya and formed Sandwich de120pun?, Kouta (the bassist of Codomo A) also joined later.
Sandwich broke up around 2012, and now Eiji, Takken (and I think some other guy from Kibouya) are in a new band called Matsutake Works (or MT Works), but they don't have any release I know of, they only do live shows.

Eiji is a very interesting person, his songwriting and lyrics are amazing, and he released so much stuff that probably I'll never get to listen to it all (he released like over 100 CDs as a solo artist under the name "Dentaku", and they're all very limited releases and very hard to get to foreigners).

In my case, I listened to VK more than 10 years ago, when I was a teen, but I don't like every older band, there was a lot of shit back then, too, Kisaki produced a lot of untalented guys on Matina, Soleil, Under Code, etc. But out of say 100 bands Kisaki produced, I can say I love maybe 3 or 4 of them, sometimes the bands had talented guys in them and made a difference with all the other seamless, boring vk bands.
I'm not really into VK anymore, I stopped following the scene closely but I sometimes catch up a bit with some artists I like, but they're all older guys. Buck-Tick and Luna Sea are still fucking around, so.

I got into visual kei in 2013, so yeah, I love lots of newer bands. (Pic related is the vocalist from one of my favorite new bands, Marco, hopefully someone knows them.)
My excuse for being so new is being young, I'm only about to turn 20.

Also, it fucking sucks that so many innovative and creative young artists are getting ignored nowadays by older fans because they insist that "muh visual kei is dead", even though it's clearly thriving, it's just gone back underground, the gold mine is in the indies scene once again.

>visual kei is dead
That's a phrase that's been around since the early 00s. Around the time bands like baroque came out (which is said to have started the infamous oshare kei), and the VK sound became more "westernized" with numetal influences and what not.
In a way, it's true that VK has never again been as popular as in the 90s, at least in Japan. The "visual boom" was in 1997.

Last decade's vkei majors wave is pretty much done, but visual kei is anything but dead. If we look back at over this last decade so far, 2010-2017, it looks so much like the hugely saturated indies vkei scene of the 90s. I kinda really dig it, there's a lot of certain things but also a lot of variety and things that have never been done before.

The thing is that with VK (and pretty much any other genre/scene, but especially with VK) a lot of bands are influenced by older bands, so when you've been listening to VK for over 10 years, everytime you hear some band, it's that feeling of "I've heard this before, many many times".
The bands that are truly unique and don't sound like anything else (VK or not) are very few.
I just listened to some The Gallo and Marco, and they sound a lot like 2000s Dir en grey. In fact I'm still amazed the DEG influence is STILL around.

I'm open to recs and suggestions though. Is there any newer band as unique as, say, Da'vid shitoal? (the band in the OP, which has 2 bass players and a really characteristic sound not found in any other band, VK or not)

I think Insanity Injection is very very unique in their sound, but that's almost cheating because it has Kyouka.

Honestly, finding a band that doesn't sound like ANYTHING else is nigh impossible, even 2000s DEG used sounds and a lot of influence of some of their predecessors, no matter how unique they were/are.

I really don't think Gallo sounds like Dir en grey did at all, they're really unique, especially in their deeper tracks (album songs, not singles). And as for Marco, their biggest influence is probably Merry, but Marco has more of a modern edge. They're fantastic musicians and all of their songs are unique and characteristic of themselves.

Yeah, in the 90s DEG were influenced by Kuroyume, especially Kyo. But during the 2000s, around the Vulgar era, they became a lot more "westernized" and moved away from their VK roots and went for sounds and vocals that were more similar to bands like Disturbed, Korn, etc. This influenced the VK scene greatly, because DEG was like the front modern VK band leading the scene at the time, the amount of Deg copybands back then was amazing, some of them even became popular (Sadie).
Merry was also a band influenced by Dir en grey, doesn't the Merry vocalist treat Kyo as his sempai or something?

Art Cube was the exact same guys from Brain Hacker, but they changed their music and visual direction kinda drastically. It was still good though, but I agree that BH had more groove to it, it was less goth and more rock.
Seiji has also changed quite a bit over the years, when he was younger his looks were tamer, and he had this elegant prince look to him. Well, in After Image he had the crazy red hairdo and the eyepatch, looked kinda like he does in Moi dix Mois, but in Amadeus his looks were elegant and boyish, in BH his looks became wilder, started using really short shorts and showing his tummy (where he had, and probably still has, the "Brain Hacker" tattoo). Then in Art Cube he started doing more heavy visuals and dressing in more feminine attire, with corsets and wigs, in total drag like Kaya.
He's full on drag in his new band Shapeshifter

I didn't know about La carmina, but I just checked and I was gonna recommend one of the bars they mention, Gellonimo.
It's a very tiny place, but it's kind of a cult place, I know a lot of bandomen hang out there (or used to, years ago, not sure how it is right now), and the owner of the bar is also the vocalist and leader of the band Gellonimo (yeah, called same as the bar).
It's a comfy place full of posters and flyers on the walls. It might be a bit old fashioned but maybe that's your thing. Either way, I say go, it's a classic place for VK enthusiasts.

Well, I think that's not something exclusive to "vk fans", people in general is shit.
My problem with VK has always been that most fans are girls that went from listening to boy bands to visual kei with death metal sound, like I don't really think they like the music, and are just in for the looks, I've confirmed this numerous times.
Anyway it all went full circle because in the end most of these people ended up liking K-pop boy bands.
That said, I've met some cool people that like VK or japanese rock, so it's not totally impossible.
As for where to find them, I met them online, some of them from my country so I could meet IRL, and some others from other countries.

I'm sort of guilty for this? I went from Jpop to Miyavi, Malice Mizer, and Dir en Grey off the visuals alone but the music quickly followed. From there I got into the big 2000's groups but Jrock stuff has always been so hard to find. I only found Malice Mizer because of a misnamed torrent back in the day that said "Dir en grey and Malice Mizer live" and when I got it, it was Illuminati live with Diru nowhere in sight.

When kpop got big it became accessable, more so than VK so with DBSK and the TRAX (who collabed with Yoshiki) looking VK at the time, I went with what I could easily get a hold of because back then they sounded sort of rock-ish.

Of course the kpop scene has changed since then and hell, the VK scene has gotten more underground and even harder to find only because Japan isn't that media-friendly for foreigners. it's near impossible to find live-airing music shows in Japan just on a stream when Korea makes websites just to help foreign fans out so they can watch and interact with the shows.

Quite nice that these guys returned to being in a band.

Sounds like old fashioned metal, but I'm really digging it. Always good to hear Tohru's drumming.
Their first single includes a huge list of "special thanks", including Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois, JILS and many vk scene personalities such as Kisaki, Misa, Jasmine You (;_;), Aki, Yoshinori Sugimoto, etc.
Really cool to see all these names on there.
Yukiya and Shun (both ex-JILS) also helped on the production of the CD.

Are the muscular/macho visual kei artists?

>> No.9551302

>>9551248
Sometimes it's hard to tell because many VK guys don't really showhow they are themselves in private life, and the whole VK imagery is an act, not a lifestyle, but it's safe to assume most of them don't fit into the "macho" stereotype.
There are many ones that are ripped, like Kyo from DEG, or Hiroki from D, but they're just ripped, otherwise they are skinny, not muscular. Can't really think of an actual muscular guy in VK, but I'm sure there are.
Otherwise you have bigger guys like Misa, who also I think has a very "macho" attitude in general (and this is funny when you have into consideration it's the same guy wearing that zebra outfit on OP's pic).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rrhc32lUmjw
When you see how he walks, talks, etc, you can tell he's very confident and, well, alpha. The other guys are more submissive and shy.
Watch the last part of that video when they're in the arcade games, Misa just destroys the kicking and boxing games (he's obviously trained in martial arts, judging from his moves), and then you see the other guys try and its like, lol.

But yeah, I mean muscular, a brute and rough while being cute.

Yeah, sorry, I can't think of any, again I can think of many guys that are ripped, or bigger boned guys, but not guys that are actually muscular and portray a VK image.

Hiro from nocturnal bloodlust is pretty vk and ripped. Then we have Gackt I guess, his body is pretty damn muscular. Hakuei has a pretty good body too.

Hakuei has an amazing body. He shows it off in the Litchi Hikari Club PV for True Heaven.

But other than those three I cant really think of anyone who is ripped in the VK scene. I know a lot of them workout, but they arent exactly "ripped".

anyway there's a difference between being ripped and actually having a muscular body.
I think what >>9551248 is asking is if there's any guy in VK that has a body type like, say, Vin Diesel, but also dress up in VK attire.

Nobody is really sure what happened. All that was said was that is was due to "both personal and professional decisions". Rumors were floating around that Kamijo was just a pain and wouldn't let Kaya do what he wanted. And then others said Kaya was to much of a diva. I don't think we will ever get a real answer as to what happened.

You should appreciate the progression from jpop to vkei opening people's minds to gothic music, it's what Mana does:
http://www.mana-sama.net/DAZZLE1.html

-- Mana-san's fans must be like that as well [liking gothic things since birth].
>"I think there are even more people like that in this world. Actually, I think there are probably some people who haven't even noticed it about themselves yet. The normal thing is to listen to J-POP, but actually if they haven't touched on anything else in this world they don't know. For example if they came in contact with my music I think they might receive a bit of a shock and be able to empathize with it and then those people might come into this kind of world."
-- Whats the difference between people who can empathize and those who cannot?
>"Those who have already made up their minds about such things. In the Gothic world vampires are used as a symbol, but I think its a world where things similar to that kind of species are naturally placed together."
-- If someone were to come into contact with gothic type things for the first time, what would you recommend to them?
>"I think it would be great if they could start out with my music. I receive letters from people saying things like "I've only listened to J-POP up until now, but once I came in contact with Mana-Sama's music I was shocked that music like this was out there and I really liked it." I want to expand that kind of thing even more."
--The kinds of people we were talking about before could even find themselves bridging over into to thinking about something different that they never may have noticed before, don't you think.
>"Human beings tend to dislike things before ever giving it a chance; it could be food or anything. ... I think for humans, having a preconception is the worst thing you could do."

The weird thing is that I've seen it the other way around (and K-pop, not J-pop).
A lot of girls I know went from american pop, to visual kei, to k-pop.
It's like vk was just a phase for them.

>> No.9558075

>>9556905
That also happened to a lot of my friends. They used to be huge VK fans, and we got go to concerts together. But as soon as Kpop started to get popular they ditched VK. It was just a phase and then they went onto the next best thing. I'm wondering what they will get into after Kpop dies down a bit.

You know, seeing it like this it makes me wonder if these guys are just Asian fetishists. Like, they are only fans because of the hot guys, when some other music with hot guys becomes more accessible they will switch to that.

Thats what I believe. I've seen way to many people say they are in the scene because of how the band members look. And when you try and show them other music they will refuse to listen to it because its not Japanese.

A lot of younger people tend to do that, switch from one interest from another.
I'm sure that how cute the guys are has a lot to do with it.
I'm not going to lie, VK guys are really attractive, but I also love the music even more. I think both play a part, but to many people it's just the appearance.
VK bands were the first bands to ever connect with me, I switched around a lot too. It's been years and I'm still staying strong with VK.
I had a few friends in the past who also loved VK, talked about how hot they were, etc. etc. and once something else caught their eye, they ditched everything that was VK.
Unfortunate.

I'm the same way. I've been in the scene for so damn long. I've seen people come into the scene only for the looks, and as soon as something new came around they would leave it just as quickly as they entered it.

I've noticed that younger fans seem to take the love for VK and band men to far. I've seen the members being stalked at cons. Like fans would just show up and refuse to leave. They would follow them all around the con and keep taking pictures even though they were asked to stop. I guess it got so bad for one band they refused to leave Japan again.

A lot of VK fans in general are fucking insane. It's no better than the sasaeng fans of kpop.
Japanese bangya are vicious snake bitches, and western fangirls are creepy obsessive stalkers. Of course, many VK fans are completely normal, but the ones who get really into it? They're crazy.
I knew a girl on Instagram who was in love with one of the members of Kiryu, she called him her 'prince' and various names like that. She also had a shrine dedicated to him. Weird shit.
