can we get a kimono/yukata coord thread going again?
My local spring fests are coming up, and I need some inspo.
Also, if you guys know some good sites to buy hakamas, kimonos, etc, please share.

I like the modern styles, but I think with raised hemlines the short socks don't look good at all. They should be tall enough to cover the exposed calf otherwise I get an old grandpa feeling, especially with the black socks. But maybe that's just my western bias.

Nah raised hemlines are super modern when it comes to kimonos. The traditional way is to have the hemline at your ankles.

Yeah, true that. Japanese people shouldn't be allowed to wear suits and other western clothing either since they belong to white people.

Does anybody know what kind of skirt she is (or was I guess, according to another thread she passed away) wearing? I'm thinking about making my own if I can't find something like it but I can't tell if it's a circle skirt or a pleated one.

And what do you think about wearing geta and zori out? I love the topheavy look of geta + tight legwear + haori and while I'm not someone who buys the cultural appropriation bullshit, I'm in a college town full of people who do and I just don't have the balls to go out with more than one traditional Japanese thing on my body. Plus, I don't really know what looks ugly when it comes to shoes, especially to regular girls not into this stuff lol.

I order my yukata and accessories from Shimazura online. They're really nice, but they do often run out of styles fast. They also have a section for more retro/antique styles. Wore this as the past Japanese festival in my state and got a lot of compliments from the elderly crowd.

>> No.9372946

>>9370660
The most unfortunate thing with modern prints like this, sadly, is they're suuuuper fucking pricey, even for yukata and with simpler prints like a simple two-toned stripe.

Often the pricing not so much that it's different from pricing of some lolita pieces for yukata, but if you're looking for komono kimono (casual kimono with a repeating pattern), they'll easily double, sometimes triple what you'd see for a lolita OP, brand new. And if you're hard into multiple hobbies (like lolita, dolls, etc which are common for people who get into kimono like this), it's pretty difficult to be able to buy these. They rarely are resold, and typically price upward when you can find them secondhand.

It's part of why a lot of modern kimono looks are done with vintage pieces, too. Most of what you'll find cheaper for brand new are mass marketed yukata from companies selling largely to gyaru or are wholesale outlets. The later is how you can find yukata at conventions for $50-100 without accessories.

>> No.9372959

For my yukata, I just browse eBay, Y!Japan Auctions, and Rakuten. For my kimono-hime stuff, I usually buy vintage from Kimono-bestbuy on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/usr/kimono-bestbuy?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2754)) or from browsing etsy, and any obis I don't find find through those I've bought at conventions, local shops when I can (used to live in NYC), and kyotohijiri on eBay (http://www.ebay.com/usr/kyotohijiri?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2754).).

Brits took it from India and watered it down to meet the standards of delicate British palates, and then the Japanese took it from the British and then watered it down EVEN MORE to suit the even more delicate palates of the Japanese

I've honestly gotten to the point where I just stopped caring and wearing kimono when I feel like it and know I won't get it seriously messed up of anything. Plus, I own several at this point (4 yukata, 5 kimono, 4 haori, not even bothering counting obi). I make myself wear those after the investment in them.

A friend of mine works in a kimono shop in NYC, and when I lived there, we'd usually chill together in kimono when we could. But again, that was the advantage of living in NY: you could easily say, "Fuck it, I do what I want," and it's a lot easier to shake off people who are trying to drill you for how you're dressed, because that's just NY.

>> No.9373638

Here's another shop, though this will need a proxy service probably. They sell new and vintage.
