And some discussion questions/prompts to get talk going. I'm most interested in the last question because I feel seifuku can get a bit stale:

> What type of uniform do you like best? One piece/traditional? Blazer or cardigan? Tie or Ribbon?
> What brands do you like, both Japanese and otherwise?
> How often do you wear this fashion? Reactions?
> How do you make your outfits more interesting/personal to you?

> What type of uniform do you like best? One piece/traditional? Blazer or cardigan? Tie or Ribbon?
I like the more sporty looks; with hoodies and sports shoes instead of the seifuku. I think exposure to anime has made it feel a bit too "weeby" for me. I love the ribbon look though, and I'm neutral on blazers and cardigans. I feel like they can both work.
> What brands do you like, both Japanese and otherwise?
I don't actually have any specific favourite brands at the moment.
> How often do you wear this fashion? Reactions?
I've only just started wearing it: I've worn one wholly "nanchette look" and the other times I've combined it with fairy kei as I'm a bit more comfortable with that style yet. I've only had good reactions so far, a lady in one of my lectures said she loved it, and when I went to a society meet up one of the boys said I looked like I'd stepped right out of an anime, so i guess I've got to take that as a compliment!
> How do you make your outfits more interesting/personal to you?
Like I said before, I've not got a 100% complete look down yet but I really enjoy the nanchette aesthetic with pastels/fairy kei aesthetics as well. I also enjoy wearing more sporty looks and experimenting, even if I wouldn't post them here cause the colours don't match and it all looks a bit rubbish stylistically!

I like them all! but I especially like more sporty or casual looks. I usually wear cardigans but I'm trying to work up the confidence to wear seifuku.
> How often do you wear this fashion? Reactions?
I wear it sometimes, usually without a bow to make it more casual. I'd like to wear bows more but I'm a little embarrassed haha...
> How do you make your outfits more interesting/personal to you?
I like using hoodies, Letterman jackets, and other outerwear. Different types of layering are fun like hoodies under blazers or turtlenecks under seifuku

I've been a fan of nanchatte for a while but only started wearing it recently, so I'm still building up my courage!

> What type of uniform do you like best? One piece/traditional? Blazer or cardigan? Tie or Ribbon?
Hard to pick. I really like old school/70s style, but also simple looks like pic related. Recently I've been going without ribbons because I like the understated look. (And also because I keep buying novelty ribbons instead of matte black and red, which would actually go with what I own.)

> What brands do you like, both Japanese and otherwise?
Most of my nanchatte stuff is not from major brands. I have an East Boy cardigan on the way though.

> How often do you wear this fashion?
Somewhat often. I lack proper blouses at the moment which is the main reason I haven't been dressing up as much.

> Reactions?
A waitress at a restaurant was fangirling over my outfit and asked me if I could speak Japanese. That's been the only weeb moment though. More than one normie woman has gone out of her way to compliment either my coat or the whole coordinate, which surprised me.

My school bag has stripey straps and a plush charm of Takkun from FLCL.

Yeah you'll definitely need to size up on the sweaters if you want to achieve a baggy look. Also I don't think your skirt is long enough. It also looks bunched up a bit in both pictures. Have you looked into sewing down the pleats? Or into getting a skirt belt like pic related?

>> No.9348489

>>9348173
I have some experience with pullover sweater vests and I have the same problem. If you have a good waist to hip ratio, they completely nullify it and give you a boxy shape. This also looks more awkward the shorter your skirt is.

I think a button-down sweater vest might look better, because at least then you could leave the bottom two buttons undone to give it more of a flattering shape. I haven't purchased one to try yet though, since I've been too disappointed by the solid piece ones to spend more money on something that might not work out.

I think pullover vests are probably good for girls with small breasts or hips, but bad on curvy girls because they hide the waist and you just end up looking lumpy.

> What type of uniform do you like best? One piece/traditional? Blazer or cardigan? Tie or Ribbon?
I guess the "British" style? Like western preppy look. It's just easier to wear for me,I find seifukus really cute but could really only wear them to cons. Love the comfy and casual look of cardigans but I have yet to find one that looks really good (like baggy enough? but still looks fitted well on the shoulder area?) on me, but I pull off blazers pretty well so I have a decent collection of them in my closet lol.

> What brands do you like, both Japanese and otherwise?
I don't have any Japanese brands but I take things from local shops that could work, taobao'd a few specific items I really wanted before, random pieces from cosplay, and I've made a few pleated skirts on my own.

> How often do you wear this fashion? Reactions?
Not often at all (especially now that it's winter). I never wear a full outfit bc it would just look too out of place here. No real reactions, I think people just assume I go to private school when I'm on public transit.

> How do you make your outfits more interesting/personal to you?

Thankfully I was long since in high school (final years of public education) when the uniforms started rolling out in younger schools. The dress code is pretty awful from what I've seen my sister wear:

>School colored polo (black, grey, navy, gold, etc. whatever school colors are)
>uniform pants (khaki, navy, black, maybe grey?)
>school logo hoodie/jacket
>can only wear certain jackets/coat while in class
>can only wear certain types of shoes
>skirts are rare? Skorts (skirts with shorts) are more common

Some places get crazier than others, like with the Christian schools. My cousin went to a school attached to a church and to play on their playground during the weekends with her I had to wear a skirt. Seriously, you had to wear a skirt to climb stuff and play around and it could not be a jean skirt. Some Christian colleges here ban women wearing pants as well on campus, A lot of women/girls here near that area (I'm surrounded by churches) wear denim skirts to their ankles year around.

>> No.9349898

I was in the choir at a Christian high school for 3 years and this was basically the choir uniform. Those exact navy polos (which were scratchy, huge, and uncomfortable) and whatever khaki skirt or pants that people happened to have. There was no regulation except that girls had to wear skirts. No specification of what type. So we had pencil skirts, floor length skirts, and pleated skirts of all different shades and textures of khaki.

In general in America, I think uniforms are more used by religious schools as a tool to enforce morality (modesty in this case) or at least the appearance of such. Rather than actually making students look sharp, they're just trying to do damage control on current fashion trends. That's why you end up with the half-assed, "dorky" appearance, because they're geared towards removing and neutralizing rather than actually enhancing the students' appearance. I assume that has a lot to do why American teens have a knee-jerk reaction away from uniforms in the first place.

>> No.9349916

I mean, our uniforms were similar before the blazers and ties were enforced, so they honestly sound pretty much the same. The blazers were put in by our headteacher who wanted us to appear posher, but it never really worked. And loads of people ignored the rules as well.

Skirts can have pockets, I love my Bodyline skirts for this.

In all seriousness, >>9350785 might have the right idea I think. I went to a Catholic school and about 6, 7? years after I graduated, they got rid our kilts altogether. The progression was like

>not allowed to wear boots with kilts unless they're below the ankle because it contributes to the sexy schoolgirl image
>even uggs
>even clompy winter boots
>by my last year there they introduced a rule that said you have to wear opaque navy stockings (no other colour...not white, or black, especially not fleshtone dancer's tights, whatever it may be) and black shiny shoes.
>yes, the shoes literally had to be glossy, and we had to wear those fucking tights even in 40 degree C humid Ontario summers

Also, the teachers were tired of telling girls to unroll their skirts 24/7, especially teachers. Honestly though, it boggled my mind because at some point they did a new khaki version for girls and they were really weirdly fitted and so tight that at the "correct" size so many girls had panty lines. I just gave up and bought a pair from somewhere that matched in colour closely enough.

All things considered though, I did like my uniform. The polo were nice and fitted so it wasn't like wearing a bag, although the sweaters were gross acrylic itchy stuff. Pretty sure they've switched to a different company now though and they don't make separate tops for girls (tailor blouses or polos), they just make you wear boy's xs. So many petite girls drowning in that shit, makes me despair. Anyway, have an ancient pic for reference. I think I had these up on Myspace, so excuse the ~edgy~ styling.

My secular public junior high had ridiculously modest dress codes, and I'm sure they'd've had us wear uniforms if they could afford them. But as it was, female students were required to a) not wear shirt collars that went below the collar bone, b) not show their shoulders, and c) wear pants, skirts, and shorts that come to at least knee length. Fishnet and similar stockings were not allowed, and bra straps could not be visible under any circumstances. A teacher would actually go around measuring girls' inseams on their shorts. Oh, and male students only had one rule: no wearing clothing that promotes drugs or alcohol.

The staff all had this kind of "you damn kids" attitude, but we all knew the code was there because Principal Barry was a perv.

So many of my friends are cosplayers/lolitas anyway, so they don't care. Relatives didn't care, except my father in law thought it was cool. He compared it to the guy in AC/DC who dresses like an English schoolboy, lol.

My husband really likes it. I went to a Catholic school when we started dating, so I guess it just carried over lol. I'd say about 95% of the time I dress for myself, but the fact that he thinks it's cute is encouraging.

I got my East Boy cardigan from Japan today and could not be happier. It is so baggy and cute on. Pic related is one of the Chinese/eBay cardigans overlaid to show the size difference. Cheap cardigan is size small, East Boy is Japanese size 9 (4/small in USA). Something to think about when you are buying cardigans if you want the authentic oversized look.

I don't know if the one I bought will last that long because I got it used from Yahoo Japan (pic related), and it is also 100% wool so I'm sure there will be pilling with repeated wear. However I can say that the cotton ones from China, after a few washes are already starting to fade. So it's not like they're terribly durable either.

And yeah - in my opinion ebay and ali have good gateway pieces if you are just getting into the style or you just want to wear it for fun occasionally. But if it's something you know you want to do long term or you wear it all the time, you will be much happier investing a little more.

It's really not that much more expensive to get brand name stuff either if you get it preowned. I paid a total of $16.64 in shipping and the cardigan itself was only $15.47. There might have been a few bucks here and there for Buyee fees. But it was still about half of what it would cost to get one new.

It's been a while since the last thread!

> What type of uniform do you like best? One piece/traditional? Blazer or cardigan? Tie or Ribbon?

I prefer the kogal look, so a large cardigan/loose socks kind of look. Traditional is too stuffy for my tastes. I can never get them right but I prefer a tie, bows are cute though!

> What brands do you like, both Japanese and otherwise?

I like Conomi and LucyPop..I can't really remember if that's the right name lol. Paris kids has cheap accessories that seem to be popular! Most of my stuff is thtifted though, we get loads of uniform shirts.

> How often do you wear this fashion? Reactions?

I haven't worn nanchatte outside yet, I'm just building my wardrobe currently. I don't think I'll be wearing it until I'm back in Japan though..I want to find a nanchatte circle haha.

> How do you make your outfits more interesting/personal to you?

If someone is dull enough to judge you negatively because your sense of style is different from the norm, especially when it's actually a conservative and tasteful look, then they don't belong in your life. Wear what you love.

The only time I worry about it is when I want to impress people for some kind of monetary gain (job interviews) or downplay attention-getting as much as possible (church).

> I kinda feel like a fetishist
Well, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you don't announce it to the world, is there? Women with foot fetishes wear cute shoes in public and nobody knows the difference, they just see someone with a good sense of style.

> or like people will think I am one...
In my experience normal people never suspect you of being a fetishist if you are female. The only people who will suspect you are other fetishists. It's true that even if you wear modest seifuku you will probably get more attention from the men out there who have a schoolgirl fetish, but hey, at least they have good taste.
