I've been following the production of this film for a few years and all that time I was planning to make her ball gown as soon as the first pictures leaked out. The disappointment couldn't be greater.

I just don't get her supercharged obsession with ~modernizing Belle so much. She doesn't wear a corset! She's an inventor! She's aggressive and in control of her own destiny!

...was Belle not good enough already? She already stood out because it was implied she was the only one in town who could read or at the very least, the only one who cared enough to make a habit out of it. She wasn't aware of her weird perception and didn't really dwell on it once she found out.

I thought Emma was a pretty decent choice for Belle but goddamn, almost everything I've heard about her input on it has severely degraded my interest in the whole thing.

Meh. It's just one of those things that can be overlooked so long as the story's good.

A good Beast cosplay would require the skills of a fursuit maker without any of the furry bullshit that invariably accompanies them.

As for Belle's ball gown, I've always thought that the famous gold gown was ugly as sin. Sure, Emma Watson's "reinterpretation" is exceedingly lame, but the original looks like a deflated quinceañera dress.

People always fuck it up by taking what they see on screen literally and overloading it with tons of ruching and bridal satin. Makes it look wrinkled IRL and oh so cheap. Even the version that the actresses wear around the various Disney parks always looks horribly stiff and frumpy.

I don't think anon is specifically complaining about historical accuracy, but rather that in a movie taking place in a specific era we're given a pretty lackluster gown, ignoring all the glorious opulence they could have easily drawn on for her gown design.

I hate Emma Watson so much for this. The 1991 Beauty and the Beast is my favourite movie and I can't even begin to care about this remake. Her stupid re-imagining of Belle, how she sounds so snotty in the Belle sequence...

I've come to think that, if we're trying to place the movie historically, it actually takes place well after the French revolution, perhaps around the 1830s or 1840s. The Beast is not a royal prince but a provincial prince, so it's not like the Bourbon heir is missing or anything. His parents could sent him away to a little-known countryside chateau to hide him from all the political turmoil and revolutions still happening. The fashion in the movie fits in more with the 1800s than 1700s I think anyway.

And I don't think he was 10 when he got Beasted, even with the 'ten years' line. If they've all been sequestered in that castle, then then maybe the ten years line could refer to how long they've been in hiding, not how long they've been objects.

As a massive Disney fan, I was very disappointed how many stupid changes were made, I also think emmas face isn't 'sweet' enough belle? Like pic related, her face characters are super round-faced, Watson's face is long and imo kind of mannish

Belles are so hit or miss. The yellow dress is hard to translate irl. I think the best ones take a bit of creative license and remember to use plenty of petticoats over the cage. Otherwise you get that sad "i bought this and a hoop online" look you see at cons these days.

I love creative license when it goes right. Like in this dress, the embroidery of the rose on the bodice is a fantastic subtle touch that gives it so much more detail without sacrificing the basic overall design of the dress.

Cinderella is honestly a hard story to do right. The new movie suffered from a really boring take on Cindy herself, and nothing to really add any new perspective or takes on the story. These movies keep fucking up their princess's (Aurora from Maleficent was the same) but at least they manage to hit good aesthetics. With out that, this new Beauty and the Beast is destined for awful from the looks of things.

But yeah no at least Cinderella was gorgeous. I was drooling the whole time over the step mothers wardrobe.

Yeah. I was disappointed because even though it was a GORGEOUS movie, the story was just meh for me. I liked the deer thing I guess...? But everything else- I felt like Belle and la Bete had no chemistry whatsoever and there was really no foundation to the love story at all and...well, the colossus part was pretty cool though even if it made no sense.

I'm really annoyed by her whole take on this. if she wanted to push her feminist take on the story, Watson certainly could have found someone to work with. There are plenty of other actresses who would have been willing to cooperate and deal with being a little bit uncomfortable for the chance to wear breathtaking costumes.

If you guys want more interesting costumes, take a look at the french version.
Personally, the director chose to work with Emma so it can't have been that big of a deal. Bit of a bummer for the costume department but whatever.
