Came for the cosplays, stayed for the drama.

Never played a Fire Emblem game before Heroes, but now after having a taste, I really like it and want to buy the other games. Most of the costumes are really appealing for cosplay.

I never found the Fire Emblem fandom to be welcoming. They would look for a reason not to like you. They remind me of a bunch of tumblrites that will use you for another social ladder. I dodged this bullet but got tired of listening to the snippy back stabbing that went on. The fandom is toxic. Not homestuck toxic kind of toxic, but mentally degrading and two faced toxic. I get bugged to join shoots but i always just go and do private shoots myself.

I wonder sometimes if they call me an elitest too, but then I think about the stress avoided and I don't care anymore.

You can get the gba ones for less than 10 bucks on wiiu, and the 3ds entries are often on sale on eshop. Shadow Dragon is pretty easy to find used, not my favorite but a decent starting point.
This is my favorite series to cosplay, new and old, and I haven't really had bad experiences. It is what you make it.

I've been a Fire Emblem fan before the English games even came out (Thanks SSBM!) I never found the fandom unwelcoming but it definitely changed for the worse with Awakening's fandom popularity explosion. It's like any fandom, there are good people and bad people.

There's a lot of surprisingly complicated elements here. Colorblocking, bias tape, plus an unusual dress structure. I wouldn't suggest this for a first sewing project, as there's going to be a lot of pattern modding that made me a lot if you've never at all sewn before.

Not that anon, but every time this Fire Emblem elitism conversation crops up in fandom I breath a sigh of relief that I can keep my "Real Fan TM" card because I've played and own Radiant Dawn & Path of Radiance, even though Awakening was my first FE game.

With stuff like this it's usually shitty paint job that's too flat rather than metallic or too weathered where paint is just smudged everywhere without considering how armor would weather over time. Also armor with cape costumes have shitty capes made of thin shitty cotton instead of satin, velvet or at least heavy linen

Any unarmored/lightly armored characters would be the easier choices.

As for couples, depends on what you're working with.

Fire Emblem 6-9 have relatively simpler, grounded designs on the costumes and plenty of semi-canon potential pairings.

Some of the simplest I can think of are:

Matthew + Leila
Jaffar + Nino
Largo + Callil
Bartre + Karla/Fir (Father + daughter)

"Easy" is kind of a relative term. What's easy for someone who can sew with no problem isn't the same as what's easy for someone who specializes in armor, so what are you looking to spend in time/$? How skilled are you?

You want something with good drape. If you're not very familiar with fabric, going to a store and physically moving the fabric around helps. Velvet is fussy to work with, and honestly doesn't match the character well imo, so I'd go with a nice black linen or matte satin, and then red with a slight shine (even just a good antistatic lining) for the lining.

anyway go with the older games if you want to do something doable, they're generally less extra. If only she can sew and neither of you can make armor, it's going to be a real headache doing anything from Awakening or Fates. If you're dead set on Awakening, Lissa or Maribelle and Donnel or maybe Lon'qu (if she's willing to help you out more) is probably your best bet.

This. fates and awakening have a lot more weird shapes on armor, close fits, and prominent seams and decorative stitching. Generally speaking, you can take a lot more liberties with older games (no detailed 3d models, less reference art), and even the ornate armor tends to be less complex shapes and gravity defying garments.
Downside of not having as many people recognizing you, but having done both, the people who do spot the older stuff, especially non smash, get really excited.
