This is kind of a bizarre question but I want to make sure I have the terminology correct. I want to create a dress with that is fitted in the bodice and flares out at the bottom with minimal bulk/gathering at the waist. I think that style of dress would be called an "a-line dress/gown" but I can't seem to find any commercial patterns that look quite right. Is my terminology wrong? Is my google-fu weak?

Pick related is kind of what I'm looking for.

My guess would be by painting using techniques used for props, but make sure you get a paint that works on plastic (ie. won't flake peel off). Any physical surface 'break down' will just make the plastic peel off the backing fabric in a bad way, unless you're going for that look.

>>9325334
Oh anon, I have a pattern that looks just like it! I think pic related is what you're going for. Btw, there are no gathers in the dress you posted. I'd say a-line is correct though.

When I need a dress pattern, I just go to mccall.com, then look through each brand's catalogue under 'evening' pr 'prom/bridal'. I can usually find something that way (unless I'm after something vintage or out of print).

Depends. You can weather it like a traditional prop, but the issue is that it's very hard to seal that kind of plastic leather, so you risk having paint rub off.

My advice is to find a stain that works and rub small amounts onto it. Edges should be dirtier while large open areas are clean. Feel free to take a knife and make some jagged cuts, too.

How do you solve the problem with ripped pants - or ripped anything actually - in costumes? Keep it cartoonish and cut + sew zigzag, having clean edges? Or a more realistic approach, ripping and thinning it out with sandpaper? Or is there something in between I could use for this look?

I tried both method on an extra piece of fabric, but both seem so flappy. The zigzag one looks riddiculus, though it's more like the referencepictures... And the ripped one is way too non-character.

>> No.9326641

>>9326636
I think it depends on how you style the rest of the outfit. If you're going for a realistic take on the character, just distress them. If you're going for a more cartoonish look (exaggerated proportions, unnatural looking wig, etc) then go for the zig zag version.

>> No.9326652

>>9326490
I just finished patterning this actually. Now I have to just get past my fear of wig styling. Just make the straps tight and in non-stretch fabric and it should be fine (the zig-zag lines will naturally give you stretch due to the shape). I'm using a thinner upholstery vinyl and it seems to be working ok. From what I've seen on other cosplayers, that seems to be the way to go. I've been using Hezachan's as a rough guide as she has a lot of info/progress on her page. Good luck fellow Juri anon!

I'm looking to build an underbust corset incl two straps over the shoulders as a harness for multiple spikes that I would like to attach to the back. How do I go about the medium that is going to be attached to the corset and where I can stick the spikes into? I already made a test before (without bones) and I kinda sewed an extra sleeve to the back where I put in a plate of wood with the holes necessary to stick the base spikes in, but I don't really like the idea of it, also this won't be as easy with the bones.

I had a similar idea for the Z-ring that I was gonna make out of thin craft foam. My idea is going to be using super magnets on the inside of the foam to lock the ends together. That way you can easily take it on and off when you need to and it will fit on snug. Super magnets are great for cosplay and are underrated as fuck. They're the tiny little things you can get from like home depot.

Alternatively build it on top of a sweat band or an elastic band you so can slip it on and off.

Depending on your budget, buy a pair of leather gloves. If its not that high, check your local army supply and get a pair of finger less fake leather gloves.

So I'm planning on making Eliza in the upcoming future, but I'm stuck on her ankh shawl thing. I was thinking of craft foam to keep its shape, but I don't know if that'll work well to keep it upright and not droop much. Also, is there a good way to keep it centered or attatched since it's only in the front? It's my first time really trying anything like this, so I'm a little lost.

What would be a good way to do it? I've been looking around and searching and haven't seen much besides the craft foam, but I was curious if there's other ways. I'm on mobile so my apologies if the picture ends up sideways.

Try looking up millinery supplies, stuff like Fosshape etc.

Oh, I hadn't even heard or thought of anything like that before. I'd briefly thought about interfacing since it's really light but my immediate thought was fabric interfacing which wouldn't work. I can definitely get some and test it out though. Thank you for the suggestion!

I assume I should keep the wire frame and attach it to that if it ends up working out, but do you think having craft foam on top of that would work? Or should I maybe try out something of a lighter weight.

If you know how to handle a sewing machine, buy a cheap black tank top and a small bit of white fabric and sew it on? I do not recommend trying to paint it or anything, usually doesnt go well on dark fabric.
If you dont have experience sewing, ask someone in your friend/family groups.

Look at it from a prop angle. It's supposed to be big and rigid, so make it big and rigid. For something this large I'd say make a big plastic or foam ring and then work from there. You can take a long sheet of sintra, heat it, then tape it around something big and round to curve it into shape. This will be sturdier and easier than any cloth solution.

>>9330218
Easiest but most expensive, 3d print it.

Otherwise, don't. It's a really complicated design for a first timer. Buy a super soaker and spray it white.

>>9329254
Build them out of foam or sintra. Worbla's too expensive to waste on stuff like that. Save worbla for complex curves and shapes, not for knee plates.

Quick single post question.

Anyone know good websites for creating custom trucker caps with custom images? I've found a few but their reference images of the caps always have odd lighting or a single cap and then just photoshop the cap colors in.

Intention is to recreate Ellis' cap from Left 4 Dead 2.

Any response would be appreciated.

Regarding the swords, in the past I used EVA foam, cutting and sanding it down. Few coats of spray paint. It proved flimsy, so I cut it down the middle and fitted a long wooden pole. Used some putty, can't recall which to help fill the seams after I glued it back together.

Well, what you can do, what I would personally do, is take a somewhat hefty, thick layer of clear plexiglass or acrylic, like half an inch thick, and cut it into a circle. Then use tape to mask off the top of it, so I can spray clear matte paint onto the sections. This way, it'll create the illusion of floating symbols when placed on top of the light. .

I don't know much about wigs. I was thinking Warm Light Brown or Dark Red Copper from Arda, or Honey or Ginger from the Lockshop (although the only suitable length wig they have is Mermaid which is wavy, but I'm assuming I could style/straighten it how I wanted).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Modifying is a good way to start out and you can practice sewing by using the extra fabric to make the extra pockets and stuff. Or mod them out of a pair of jeans to give yourself more practice with straps and buttons. I feel you, anon. I have a tomboy mother so I never learned girly things, and wore Bermuda shorts for most of high school. It wasn't until late college that I started wearing makeup or dressing in flattering clothes. But now I wear sheath dresses and pumps to work, and can do a full face of makeup while stuck in traffic.

IMHO the trouble with following makeup threads is they're often focused on wacky advanced techniques, and you almost certainly want to start with something natural, light, and foolproof. If you're willing to spend $50 on product afterward, Sephora will give you a makeover and makeup lesson - just call the store and tell them you want to book one of the full makeovers. (Any mall makeup counter will do the same thing, but they only have mid- or high-end products. At Sephora you can get more bang for your buck by buying their house brand makeup, which is only slightly more expensive than drug store makeup, but with the benefit of someone teaching you how to use it first.) I think freestanding NYX stores may do the same thing, but I've only ever seen one.

As for clothes, tell me us about:
- Your budget or stores where you normally shop. (Not going to send you to Anthropologie if you buy your current clothes at Old Navy.)
- Your lifestyle and where you're going to wear these clothes -- are you looking for streetwear, clubwear, officewear, etc. (Not going to recommend wool sheath dresses if you're just going to class.)
- Your body type -- height, weight, and where you carry that weight (see pic).

I know it's not really cool to talk about here but Reddit's make-up subreddit (makeupaddiction) has a ton of great resources from recommendations to tutorials plus some seriously knowledgeable people hang out there. If you want some inexpensive products to start expirmenting with, checkout their master list of drug store make-up. The thread here isn't bad but it tends to be very Asian makeup focused, which might not be the best for a beginner, especially if you're white.

As for clothes, like the other anon said, that's going to be entirely up to you. If you think jfash is where your interests lie, the threads here are pretty solid. Otherwise, start browsing tumblr or Pinterest and save styles that speak to you. Start by just trying to break down and copy other people's outfits, then branch out from there.

Alrighty! I'm making a literal box cosplay of Kijitora from Nyanbo, but I want it to be relatively sturdy. So, I'm thinking of using Corrugated plastic sheets (more durable than cardboard) for the head and main body. I kind of want to make a boxy, but flexible structure covered with fabric for the arms and legs so I can actually somewhat move around.

I would like to get some honest opinions on whether or not this is a sound idea for the limb construction:
>make solid square bottom foot frame/hand frame (gonna need a handler, kek)
>make a couple of support frames at the knee and hip/elbows and shoulders to keep boxy shape
>pad the leg/arm structures with thinner cushion foam material (like they use in fursuits) >make fabric "socks" to go over the structure

I really like the belt and thighs idea in this gundam cosplay tutorial for wearing the legs.

Otherwise from this art you could also probably get some green, long-pile faux fur and use some paint and mod podge to give it some leafy shapes and textures and sew some leaves in that as well. For street dresses, look for for: (1) jersey knits, (2) with an A-line skirt (a skirt that flares out), and (3) a waistband (if there's no waistband, tummy pudge can stand out awkwardly). This is foolproof and comfy. Example:
http://www.modcloth.com/shop/dresses/predilect-your-thoughts-a-line-dress

For interview-wear, consider whether you're going to need a suit at some point in the future. If you are, go to J. Crew, try on a suit and figure out your size, and then buy it on eBay for a third of the price; it should be black or gray. If not, just go buy some bottoms. For a top, I think that flowing blouses are more flattering than (and equally professional as) oxford shirts, e.g. http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/pleione-split-neck-roll-sleeve-tunic-regular-petite/4555001?cm_mmc=google-_-productads-_-Women%3ATops%3ABlouse_Top-_-5163956_5&rkg_id=h-14dfa0be75351da2eb1f78ea92bd3350_t-1486307505&adpos=1o1&creative=145518898720&device=c&network=g&gclid=Cj0KEQiAt9vEBRDQmPSow-q5gs8BEiQAaWSEDu3dPjBU3DgwvnKrHRMcbtL_1X1DNOCvtu3IkQB_9gwaAu8Z8P8HAQ..

feel this may be a good place to ask, what would be the best way to get the other half on board with crossplaying?

im a 25 year old guy and i recently just watched k-on and quite enjoyed it. probably the main highlight was yui as her derpeness and just in general attitude really reminds me of myself. with a small convention happening in a few months nearby i want to give a crack at going as yui.

i know there is genderbending but im not a fan of it honestly and i also think it could be some good fun just dressing up and throwing on some make up for a day.

i mentioned id seen on ebay costumes for yui and maybe i could try it jokingly a few days ago but she didnt seem to hot on the idea of me dressing up as a teenage girl, shes also not the biggest fan that i enjoyed the show and finds it a little weird which i can agree with as i myself find it a little weird.

so thanks for reading, sorry to drift off a little but any tips on broaching and getting her on board as ill need someone to do my makeup :P

It can be rough! Criticism hits me hard, too. A coping tactic can be crossposting your stuff between /cgl/ (I'm assuming that's where you're getting your criticisms) and a place that'll more readily praise and compliment you (ie Tumblr, Facebook, deviantArt). That way, for every piece of crit you get, you can remember "okay, at least there's x number of other people who do like this" - and internalise the crit for the future.

Remember, too, that much of the time people will dole out criticism because they think your work is worth *something*, but it needs some help to get better. Unfortunately, a lot of people need to learn how to phrase their words to be more helpful than dismissive -- the "compliment sandwich" (one genuine compliment, 2-4 pieces of useful crit that suggest WAYS to improve beyond "looks like crap", another compliment) sounds hugboxy but it's a legit educator's tool that continues to work well on people past the age of elementary school.

I'd gladly pay 300$ for a good quality, properly measured wizard/high priest robe from ragnarok online or a blue mage outfit.

fuck this inbred island full of drunks who's idea of cosplay is wearing a superman costume.

Sounds like youre gonna need to do some dyeing anon. This tutorial uses sharpies, but you can try using the fabric dye method too.

How do you make the little 'w' at the center of the hair part? Does it have to be a lace front to look good? I've seen tutorials for big poofy bangs like for sailor moon wigs and stuff but how would you go about making a little one?

Suggestions for a wig for BM Diana?

I'd prefer a lace front and not a strictly grey one
