Tangentially related: wondering if any other sweet lolitas feel a mite selfconcious about feeling under dressed at a meetup? Even if you exclude OTT things from both classic and sweet most of the new simpler classic releases are encrusted with gold printed ribbons, dangling pearl details and delicate fabrics; while even with busy prints, sweet remains pretty plain in comparison.

It's not that I don't like sweet anymore or that I need affirmation from my comm members I just sometimes feel like I am wearing a tracksuit to a ball, and wondered if anyone was feeling the same.

I'm usually underdressed at meetups but nobody had said anything about it, since what I wear is still proper lolita. I guess basic, boring coords are just my style. I wouldn't like to make my coords more interesting or OTT to please others.

Anon probably means AP, BtSSB and AatP style classic like pic. Lets be honest people don't exactly go nuts for IW classic as releases are pretty plain. It's normally new release AP that is all over meetups and social media. Inb4 "not all".

I think I can empathize with anon, I was wearing a new release AP sweet print and accessorized it really beautifully. Even though it was chiffon it looked really boring next to one on the other members AP "classic" JSK wich she coorded with a white blouse, single small hairbow (also gold trimmed) white ankle socks and matching shoes. The coord looked nice, but I think it looked impressive because of all the detailing on the trimms etc. like anon mentioned. In any case she would have looked like a basic bitch if it was a sweet lolita dress.

I'm the only one in my group of lolita friends who only wears sweet and doesn't own any new-school classic. Sometimes I feel under dressed when we go to fancy events because my dresses (mostly AP jsks from 2+ years ago) are just a lot more simple than theirs.

But, at the end of the day, as long as I'm happy with my coord, that's all that matters. To people unfamiliar with the style, it all looks the same anyways.

I wore a basic bitch matching set to a big fancy convention tea party. I didn't put much thought into the coord because I was focusing on my artist alley stuff. While I had fun at the tea party and got a few pictures, I felt really out of place compared to everyone wearing beautiful elaborate coordinates with ornate dresses.

To be fair, this isn't an unfounded fear depending on where you are. I think if you wear lolita, especially OTT lolita, to a place that is deemed unsafe for even people wearing normie clothes then you're an idiot. There is a chance that you will be harassed in even "safe" places though. I was wearing sweet lolita in a fairly safe, touristy part of town and was grabbed on a train.

I guess that even that kind of thing can happen in normie clothes but I'm saying that I would get why people might be nervous to wear sweet out.

I can emphasize with feeling nervous when you're wearing sweet lolita the first few times, it can take time to get used to, especially if you never wore alt fashion before. But if your main worry is that you don't want to wear it by yourself it sounds more like she's scared of not fitting in than being attacked. And there's always a chance you'll get harassed or attacked when you go outside.
