I'm not going to post a pic cuz I would get torn to shreds but I have definitely improved my cosplays. For my first cosplay I did something way outside of my skill range, had a floppy "spiked" wig, and wore really worn out non matching sneakers. The pictures of my fist cosplay horrify me...

I went from drooling over Milanoo and $50 ebay dresses to buying and wearing burando on the reg in the period of a few months. Still working on building up wardrobe staples but I think my taste has gotten a LOT more refined. It's encouraging!

First two costumes were a mix of:

>wtf is up with these seams
>unsealed body paint
>horrible prop, no sanding and shitty painting
>no makeup or posing skills whatsoever
>party city tier wig
>a-at least I've hemmed things and am not missing any parts, that's good enough, right?

Now, after about ten years of cosplaying on and off, I routinely surprise myself with how skilled I've become. My seams are nice, my props at least look clean if they aren't super impressive, I can typically eyeball things accurately, and I've gotten SO much better at styling wigs, doing my makeup, and posing. I still have progress to make, but for someone who only occasionally engages in this hobby, I've definitely improved quite a bit.

I convinced my mom to buy my a VERY overpriced Bodyline separates set from some site called cosmates. I was a dumb 15 year old and hadn't even discovered EGL - I have no clue how I found that cosmates site in the first place. I think it was like $120 shipped for the separates set and a shitty no-poof, sorry excuse for a petticoat. I won't lie, I was very very happy whilst wearing the damn thing and actually got some compliments from normies. Most people thought I was wearing a pirate costume. Pic related, it's the overpriced Bodyline ita crap.

Fast forward 7 years later. My closet is more than 2/3 brand and the rest is nice Taobao stuff. It didn't take me the whole 7 years to not be an ita, thank god.

I was thinking about this the other day after finding a couple of old costumes. I'm pretty sure my craftsmanship have regressed. My wig and makeup skills have improved by leaps and bounds, but I made a friend soon after I started cosplaying who caused me to pick up some bad habits, like procrastination. We are no longer friends but I feel like crap about all the wasted time and materials.

It's my worst cosplay and I ended up trashing it shortly after that. I've only been cosplaying for two (almost three) years and I'm honestly surprised at how much I've improved. I kept the second cosplay from that year (which wasn't as bad) and I have continued to improve it until now and it's one of my most well-received cosplays.

If it wasn't for the positive experience that I had at my first con, I probably wouldn't have continued cosplaying. I don't know how or why so many people loved my cosplay but it encouraged me to improve.

2012: Replica and bodyline-chan. Lots of handmade accessories that weren't that great (newb at jewelry making) Non-matching non-cohesive blouses and shoes, no bags. Lots of claires jewelry. Sockdreams tights and plain/striped OTKs, rainbow twintails, Loris replica bags. Knew next to nobody in the fashion. Fairly clueless about makeup, but did wear it. Oh and goofy square black rimmed glasses.

2016: 34 main pieces, all brand except two indie. No bodyline except some shoes and a few choice blouses that were decent enough to keep. Otherwise brand blouses and indie. Lots of brand jewelry, but I now make pretty nice jewelry and sales of it helps to fund my burando-buying habits. Wardrobe is really colorful and varies a bit in theme but suprisingly cohesive. I just need a few odds and ends tied up (like finding the right color of shoes). Lots of coordination options but always room for improvement. Met tons of people from everywhere. Invested a lot in high quality makeup. Has various cute glasses to match coords now.

Somehow I lost the hat and gloves to my first cosplay but didn't think I needed to replace them, haha.
I learned how to do makeup and make props/armor, my bias taping is pretty messy on Sakura's cape. I think my craftsmanship has improved since my most recently made cosplay, since I've learned more techniques, but I haven't put them to use yet. Of course posing/picture quality/editing all improved, and I also learned how to cut/style my wigs (though I usually cosplay longer haired girls, so the main thing is making the bangs look accurate and also suitable for my face).

I did mention editing improved haha, if it makes the picture look better and I'm still recognizable, I'm fine with shooping. Sakura is a lot less shooped than Emilia though, for what it's worth; I was half dead the day I photoshot Emilia and was not looking my best lol

My friend had the sleeves but she forgot to bring it the day of, unfortunately. I used a Maki wig from Kucos and straightened/trimmed it to the right length! The festal is pretty shit admittedly; I have very little experience with props but I'm working on it!

Looking back only a year ago to today, I can finally cringe at my old coord. I find self posting for me is a huge step.

However I still have this notion of never being alright or complete with my coords (as well as put togetherness) now or ever in the future. So I always ask for concrit and opinions.

Though my size has changed a lot from last year to today.

I already posted this pic here a couple times but I really like how I improved my Nagato costume over the years. I used to wear my wigs straight out of the bags without styling them.
Also learned a thing or two about make-up and contacts.
