Victorian mourning dress had very little to do with religion at all. It was about physical expression of personal grief, and if we are honest about it - fashion too. Crepe is expensive so it shows how rich you are by wearing it.
Not to mention deliberate social control of widows by excluding them from society for on average 2 years after their husbands death....

Maybe so, but such practices are upheld by even two generations back and largely in religious families. My grandmother followed mourning rituals in her family down to the progression of removing black from the wardrobe. Complained about how when she was younger, her sister even dyed my Nana's underwear black.

She is from England... it seems the practices stuck in religious families. Even my Baptist side of the family practices mourning rituals albeit not as strict.

I'm British and I think the connection with religion is still minimal it's just that religious families tended to be more traditional and conservative about clothing.
Mourning wear started to fall out of mainstream fashion because of WWI- so many young widows and almost everyone lost a relative, it was hard to dress the whole country in black (especially with rationing), same again during WWII, but the individual decision to abandon mourning customs varied hugely between families, and social classes - for instance I also know people whose grandparents remember mourning wear, but my grandparents (all born in 1923 or 1924) don't because they could never afford more than a black armband or hat ribbon anyway.
