kind of related:
FINALLY the organizers translated the 6.0 rulebook of Drachenfest to english... kind of. Still missing two chapters. and there are still german sentences in there and the translation still kind of bad. at some places but whatever.

Two questions, one about DF:
1) Someone offered me a Sallet for about 40 EURO. Second hand. Should I go for it?
2) How much money for buying shit I don't need like armour and foam weapons should I take to DF?
Planning to buy:
-Gambeson
-Chestplate/Chainmail
-Bevour
-One or two helmets
-Pistol
-Shield
-A Cavalier hat
-Probably some clothes

>> No.9097703

>>9097656
The fireball still seems really OP:
Shields don't protect you, neither armor, so you directly hit on your life points.
A friend managed to really up his fireball levels, so now if he meets someone who goes through the chore of being heavily armored, he has more than enough time to burn the poor guy before he can do as much as close the range between them.

>> No.9097731

>>9097695
Looking at that list I would suggest all the money you are willing to spend. Anything you don't spend can go to the brothels or travel back home with you.

>> No.9097738

>>9097703
1.) without seeing the sallet in question I have no clue if it worths it or not
2.) That's a lot of stuff. Fuckton of stuff to be precise. Helmets tend to be expensive so you can easily go several hundreds of euro or if you want to buy really nice stuff you can go over a 1000 euro.

>>9097703
well, I personally never looked too hard on the magic part in the drachenfest rules as I don't speak german so it would be too much hassle doing magical stuff.
But here is the thing: you can bring your armour whenever you want, but you can do maxed out fireball only if you spend enough skill points on it while the armoured dude can buy magic resistance or more hitpoints from that. Or several other stuff.
Or just drink with a few other people while the mage doing all his studies so he will have friends who will avenge him after the mage killed him.

If you want to be able to fight, at least half you character points goes to weapon competences. That gives you only enough points for two more life points/ a small magic resistance. And your last argument don't stand much since the mage in fact has also buddies to protect him long enough to do his trick again.

>>9097741
you need only one weapon skill as a bare minimum, everything else can be backed up with IRL skills. For example polearm skill is enough. But you can maybe buy another one. That's hardly half of your skill points.
And while it is indeed powerful to throw magic around you are still can't do it continiously. So yes, one on one it can be powerful but still not game breaking. It's just makes mages high value targets, that's all. Especially in a game where there are thousands of people on the battlefield.

>> No.9097762

>>9097753
Well, i guess you're right in your assumption. It still feels really powerful for me, but maybe it's just a case of "Git Gud".

Otherwise, the firearms still confuse me, on some pages, it's just a Gust of Wind, on others it goes through armor. Does it only depend if your weapon can shoot something or not?

>> No.9097765

>>9097762
no clue. The rule of thumb is that someone do something to you in a big fight and it looks magically or firearm but not siege weapon and because of the confusion in the fight you don't know whatever the fuck that was you just simply go back from the front lines for a little.

Depends on which pieces you want, I find that different places have very different strengths. For example, Calimacil is the best for latex weapons, but their clothing is not very good.

Kult of Athena is usually pretty good, although it varies by the supplier. I've heard that equipment from Windlass and Epic Armory are usually not very good, so avoid those.

Most larps I attend discourage head hits. Rule is that you can only aim for the head if that's the only bit you can hit, for example they are turtling behind a big shield.
So with that in mind, a lot of folks don't bother with helmets. Also, at least at Empire facial/head prosthetics make wearing helmets unfeasible.

I feel as if you would benefit from a different corithian helmet. That one looks too big, although more padding would help.

nah, I got used to retards on 4chan. If I'm triggered by something It's rather the people over here in hungary.
That and the lack of time until Drachenfest while I'm still isn't finished with a fuckton of things.
Have to finish the armour painting (it's mostly maintance, although gauntlets got new parts, so have to paint them too) and it dries REALLY slow as I doesn't use modern paint.
Have to finish the new jerkin too and the thread keeps tearing.
Still have to do a maintine thing on my costume too and modify the sheat for my dagger.

You would think! In my game, there's a knockout spell that isn't very rare, and players use it a lot. Helmets let you ignore knockout effects, though, so you would think more people would use them. But for some reason, it doesn't happen very much.

Looking to finally get a riveted chainmail shirt.

Is aluminum or steel better to get? The difference is about 20lbs, and no price difference.

>> No.9101470

>>9100107
Basic stuff I would recommend for medieval fantasy mercenary would be a gambeson, jack chains, and some sort of helmet. I think a kettle or open faced bascinet would be most historically correct, but since it's fantasy, you don't have to sweat that if you like something else. That should run you only a couple of hundred, so you still have spare money for other accessories or a particularly nice helmet.

>> No.9101501

>>9101463
Steel is obviously more accurate. It also looks and feels more like proper armour than ally-mail. Some systems like Empire also seperate aluminium and other "light" forms of mail from steel shirts, and give them a lower armour value.

If any of those things tempt you then get steel, if saving weight is more important then aluminium is the way to go. There is also the argument that why go to the extra cost of riveted over butted if you are getting aluminium which takes away most of the advantages of riveted in the first place.

We have a knockout rule which everyone with a boffer weapon can use, helmets prevent that.

Hits on your head and helmet does not count, and since a helmet is larger than your head it will slightly reduce the chances of getting hit in the shoulder.

A metal helmet increases your armor value and can potentially give an extra hp.

And still no one uses them...

>>9101463
>>9101501
Aluminum is also more brittle.

I don't have any personal experience with aluminum chainmail but after hearing some people talking about the rings breaking apart I would never invest in one if I were to use it in SCA or hard foam fightning (like calimacil).

Butted steel is alright for larp. Butted Ali is like butter and it's only really good for show walking etc.

Riveted Steel is heavy and strong. Riveted Ali kinda takes away the weakness aspect. It's still soft but the idea of it being riveted is that it doesn't break as easily.

Guys, which European + Brittish webshop for larp items is overall best?

I'm trying to find an alternative for our groups starting equipment supplier, we've been using mytholon so far because of their low prices and wide selection which is good for our beginners to get gear from. But I've been looking for an alternative that has about the same service but overall better quality in their items (and of course with justifiable prices).

explain why his armor is bad because its cheap. I see starter helms for 70 dollars. His klapp looks like it would hold up fine. infact the only issue i can see is that the chain is butted(and it might be welded i cant tell). Everything looks thick enough and properly constructed, he has a gambeson underneath.

His klapp looks like it would hold up fine. infact the only issue i can see is that the chain is butted(and it might be welded i cant tell). Everything looks thick enough and properly constructed, he has a gambeson underneath.
"Looks" means jack shit. What matters is the exact thickness and strength of the steel AFTER it has been forged and shaped. KOA is shit because they rarely, if ever, specify if the thickness of the steel is before or after making the object, so it's impossible to know without measuring itself. Starter helms are not "often" sold for 70 USD unless they're total shit, the typical price you'll get is 120 or so USD for a shitty cold steel 12 or 14 gauge bascinet with bar grills somebody made in their backyard. Visors are much more expensive. Finishing is much more expensive. A cheap shit bascinet from KOA is unlikely to meet SCA standards at all. My bascinet that I just custom ordered from a really cheap but good forge will end up costing me over 300 including shipping for 14 stainless.

Well, I'm bored at work so here goes.

Hungarian, I'm pretty sure that you are the one who offered to give me some advice on this outfit a while back. I'll take you up on it. Everyone else is free to chime in.

There are several different iterations of this outfit, for use in various games, from SCA Heavy (the one pictured), Cut and Thrust, LARPS, and HEMA, to general cosplaying.

It's supposed to be a Landsknecht. But at the moment it's missing some essential Landsknecht-ness, and instead just evokes the general feeling.
Things I have that arn't pictured, which help the outfit along are my Tellerberret, Katzbulger, my neck pouch, and a Burgonet that I am purchasing soon. I will hopefully be able to find some pictures showing those items.

Things I need include more obvious slashing, more poofyness, and a codpiece.

How does it look so far, and what do I need to address to make it better, and in what order?

Kneejerk suggestions are:

1: Ditch the leather bazubands and get a set of floating elbows, possibly couters, and vambraces.

2: For the love of god, new strapping on your body harness. Very obviously modern belts.

3: Paint/polish/blacken your metal pieces into a uniform colour (non essential, just looks good)

Otherwise, its a damn decent start. I really like the design of the gaunts, but they look very aluminum.

Thanks for the reply Gropey.

I in fact just acquired a (non-matching) pair of floating elbow cops at the most recent event I attended, and am very happy with them. I was searching for them because I agree, it adds a lot to the look. I don't have any pictures with them yet, but hopefully soon. Now to figure out hidden forearm splints so I don't get my arm snapped in half...because I want poofy sleeves instead of visible vambraces.

Yes, absolutely. Something else, period appropriate, needs to happen with the strapping. I like this because it was easy, cheap and secure, but it's so blatant it hurts.

What kind of paint do you suggest? I've been wanting to paint it black, in part for asthetic, and in part to combat rust.

I love these gauntlets. They are fingered in addition to having the very distinctive Milanese clamshell look and protection. They are stainless.

This picture is of me at a Cosplay thing, with some of the aforementioned missing items. I'm claiming to be an Empire Greatswordsman from Warhammer Fantasy in this one.

shoe looks wrong, the slight angle on the toes weren't a thing, There is a reason it's called bear foot/pawn shoes.
I'm not sure about the knee socks you use, can't judge from the pic what material they are made of, other than that they are acceptable.
Slashes on the hose looks wrong, as in, you just put them there as an afterthought.
Can't see more about that pic, apart that the armour which is may or may not good enough.
Helmet is okay for some landsknecht time period but rather for late XV. (but then the hose wouldn't match it)
Gauntlet is okay probably (would hae to look it up later), and I can't see enough of the rest.

>>9106607
hose is wrong, can't fix it, you need a new one.
Hose should come up to your waist line and by waist line I mean to the bottom of the ribcage which is usually at around the height where your elbows are if you are hanging it next to your body.
Gloves doesn't fit the time period either, but I'm guessing there are practiucal purposes for that.
Same with shoes.
The white part of your hat (english name doesn't come to mind) looks strange. It isn't exactly wrong, but you could have made it better. I see you sew your tallerberret to it. It's not wrong either, but you could do a better job with it again.
Belt is too modern and wide. Wide blets weren't a thing either.
Can't tell more from this pic apart that the space between the two crossguards on the bidenhander looks very short but whatever floats your boat.

On the paint department I paint my armour with linseed oil (with a little addition of rape oil just for giggles and shit) mixed with very fine coal powder. It's a bitch to dry and put it on but the end result is a very nice texture and this is an authetnic method. You could add an egg or parts of the egg to the mixture, there are receips for that but I didn't tried it yet.

Anyway those are all just from a reenactment viewpoint. For SCA and larp it's good.

A few more afterthought:
Can't see your doublet or shirt on the pics so I can't say anything about them.
Also can't see if the chainmail is actually a shirt or just a bishops mantle. (The later was more popular in 16th+)

Katzbalger isn't a must have, while it IS the signature weapon of the landsknechts not everyone used them, there are a fuckton of other examples from messers to various sabres, cut and thrust swords and sometimes prot-rapiers. if we are talking about one handed swords.
Also you lack a dagger. A dagger is important.

If you have specific questions ask. These are just the main problems I see but there are several ways to make it better, it depends on you which one you choose.

Also on pic, texture of breastplate while it was still a little wet. As I said in previous posts, I go for munitions grade look.

Cardboard, eh? I could get plenty of that, but most of it has folds in it already since it comes from boxes. Should I be looking for more industrial strength cardboard, or am I just underestimating how strong a few layers of box cardboard would be? Or does adding foam to that help with the stiffness a lot?

Textile shouldn't be a problem; I still have a large sheet of canvas left over from my first shield.

I hear you about fighting against dumb rules, but in this case I honestly don't care that much anyway. It's not even a rule, just some of the players who are extra cautious asking me not to get into very close combat with a wood and metal shield. And honestly, I'd like to worry less about accidentally knocking someone's teeth out so I can focus on fighting better.

needs way less work, easier to store and doesn't need as much tools. I mean if you don't bend it you can literally be done under an hour if you know what you are doing.
And if you are going to use it 5 times a year maybe you don't want to put more time in it.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't but I can see why someone wouldn't want to curve it.

>>9107578
well, you should get the wavey cardboard for boxes. in 3-4 layers, turning 90 degrees every second one. If there are a few folds here and there it's not the end of the word but try to avoid it.
Use any kind of paper glue, wallpaper glue worked really well for me.
Attaching the handles can be tricky depending on what kind you want but if two straps in it is enough for you then there will be no problem.

Anon who was talking about remaking my shield here. Mine was the same style, I used 3/8 inch plywood and found it to be a bit on the heavy side, but not unmanageable. I didn't curve mine because I didn't feel the effort was worth it for a little bit extra authenticity (especially since my larp is fantasy and my kit already combines several different time periods), but one of the sites I used as a guide had detailed instructions for how to curve it. If you like, I can provide a link in a few days when I'm home.

Marine plywood is usually the wood of choice right balance between strength and weight.

A slight diagonal or a "upwards" oriented vertical grip work best and are the main historical way of doing it. Horizontal grips work ok but downwards vertical grips were made by Satan himself. You also want a neck strap that helps support the weight and allows it to be easily carried when not in use, make sure it's diagonal or it will never sit right on your back.

For the rim, nailing on rawhide with tacks is the quick and easy option but be aware that the tacks need to be hammered down good and proper as they can be sharp and cause injury.

Drilling holes about 3cm apart and then sewing on a leather rim with heavy linen thread or (artificial) sinew is the more authentic option but is a real pain to do and will eat your needles. If you go linen paint the rim or treat it so the threads won't break if they get wet.

Soaked dog bones are a venerable method of shield making. Obviously you want the longest strips you can get without major tears, then once it's all tacked on clean it up with a stanley knife.

If you have a canvas layer on the back it can disguise the fact that the shield is not actually made of planks held together with medieval glue. It also helps prevent splinters and general untidyness should anything actually bust a hole in the shield. Wood filler and PVA should take care of any rips or dents earned in battle.

And by that I mean it's not a complex work.
But it takes time and if you make a thicker one it's really fucking hard to work the needle through every layer by hand.
There are tricks to everything of course like using an awl, pilers and a hammer, etc but the only thing that you can really fuck up is the armpits.
