A thread for discussion, questions, coord advice, inspo photos for j-fashions other than lolita. Lolita is still welcome though, especially coords which are influenced by other styles.

>which j-fash styles are now dead? Which are rising?

When I first found out about j-fashion I was 12-13. I knew about lolita at the time but didnt really like it. I was super in love with decora however. At the time lolita was still very oldschool and I didnt have a mature enough taste to enjoy it. But when I rediscovered lolita years later, OTT era had happened and I fell in love. I now appreciate and enjoy oldschool though

Is there a name for the sort of sporty-girly-pastel style that places like wego and spinns sell? Or is it just a trendy look in Japan? That's what I'm really obsessed with as of late. I also noticed that itabags were everywhere when I was in Harajuku a few days ago!

Sometimes I wish there were western j-fashion communities instead of just lolita. But I remember that people have a hard enough time getting an understanding for lolita, which is like the most structured and distinctive style ever.

I also wish there were some j-fash comms. If you live in a big city sometimes they organize a Harajuku fashion walk and it's pretty cool seeing a ton of people in fairy kei, decora, shironuri, cult party. Good way to make friends and then maybe try to hang out in non lolita jfash.

NY had a huge fashion walk one year once and it was amazing

What are people's opinions on more normal jfashion?
e.g seiso-kei and akamoi?
Do you still count them as jfashion or something else entirely?

Personally, I wear a lot of sweet girly things that straddle the line between romakaji and akamoji. I used to just think of this as a normal wardrobe with no real jfashion elements even though a lot of the items were from Japan. However, I've come to realise that even though I'm wearing stuff from dazzlin' , emoda, olive des olives, lowry's farm and other brands that are fairly normal and mainstream in Japan, it definitely stands out where I live and people can tell it's not entirely mainstream. So now I'm just inclined to say it's all jfashion.

I mean technically it's all jfashion as it's fashion made in and popular in japan. Idk, Tommy Bahama and Tommy Hilfiger are both american styles, even though they are very different. Japanese clothes will often have details, cuts, prints etc that are not seen a lot in American clothes, even if they aren't relatively as crazy as something like lolita or mori girl.

You seem to forget that jfashion in the west is still very niche, many import shops can't even get rid of GLB issues for years and that while lolita is still one of the more known fashions.

I'm not forgetting anything, just saying there is a jfashion magazine that people are willing to buy instead of just downloading scans for. Holy shit you guys are fucking pressed.

I don't really know what an English jfashion magazine would offer. I'm not a Lolita so I've never looked at the glb, but other jfashion magazines exist to sell you stuff and again, many westerners cannot fit Japanese brands. What would be the point?

Get rid of the buttons, imo (plastic/cheap, don't match the others on the skirt).

Lace and red bows is cute, just not good quality, try other laces and grosgrain. Fully tie the bows and stitch to skirt with a hidden stitch instead of buttons.

I have no idea what my first exposure to it was, either livejournal or maybe anime. Seeing people wearing lolita in real life made me become actively interested
in various Japanese fashions.

I like the detailing, color palettes, creativity and constantly evolving fashions and themes. I feel like this is something that doesn't really happen so much in the west now.

Lace, cuter leg wear, detailing, headwear/hair accessories.

Peco kei/peco club(pic related), genderless kei, and neo gal are the only new ones I've heard of. But I don't know how popular those first two are. Neo gal should be somewhat popular because of the trends that are in right now, which is an alternative, "bad girl" kind of style.

>What got you into J-fashion?

I watched my bf post on other boards lot and occassionly pics of these cutely dressed girls would pop up. I started googling terms and got very enamoured with lolita. My bf sensing my growing interest pointed me towards /cgl/ and I found a little fashion wonderland. Finding images of girls around world wearing these fashions gave me the incentive to try it too.

>Why do you like it more than western fashion?

I like it more because it's so inventive! I wouldn't wear certain fashions like decora for example but I love the way they look and the time and energy that goes into co-ords. The 'being yourself' element through clothing really appeals to me. I find that everyone in my country dresses different by basically dressing in variations of the same thing with a buttload of Primark and H&M thrown in, it's depressing when you consider that before I was born there were famous street styles.

>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?

More small details, lace and cute buttons that really finish off pieces. Cute tights and more platform shoes. Pastel trainers and more pastel stuff in general.

I'm just gonna dump some stuff to keep the thread going.

>What got you into J-fashion?
I was a goth as a teenager, but I felt like the only one out of my friends who was actually putting thought into my outfits and co-ording things to create a particular theme/look, rather than just throwing on whatever black shit I found in my wardrobe. When I discovered lolita on here, I thought it was great that all these girls were actually treating fashion as a hobby and taking it seriously. I tried lolita, but it wasn't for me, and I eventually settled in gyaru, where i love the diversity of looks and overall 'glamorous' aesthetic.

>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I'm obsessed with leopard print and it seems like the cack-handed twats making clothing over here have NO idea how to use it in a piece well. Brands like d.i.a and MA*RS integrate bold prints into their clothing in a way that is undeniably still tacky as hell, but a lot more attractive and cohesive. I also feel like in terms of media, Jfashion shops, sites and magazines present a more cohesive top-to-bottom look including hair, makeup and accessories, whereas Western trends are usually like 'buy this skirt lol'.

>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
I really love all the cute characters and imagery that Japanese girls have on their mirrors, bags, notebooks, phones, even food products. That element of making a style part of your everyday life doesn't seem to happen here at all. My parents think my leopard print stuff (bedsheets, car, car upholstery, suitcase, torch etc etc) is weird as hell and they don't understand why I'd want to match everyday things to my look.

I went to a jfash panel at a con. It was shit but it got me researching lolita and I found cgl and took off from there. I started with lolita but have delved into many other styles.

>why do you like it more than western fashion?
For one, it fits me much better than western clothes. I'm really small so it's so much easier shopping in Asian sizes. I love fashion but shopping in the west would honestly get me upset. I could never find things that fit right. It's funny that one size Japanese clothes fit me far better than most sizes ever do where i live. I also love the colorful styles and cute details. Most of my western clothes are boring black/plain. Japanese fashion pushes me to taking fashion risks and I find that fun.

Pastel colors. Frills/good lace/bows. Interesting patterns. Cute socks.

Etsuna Otsuka kind of does her own thing but her style definetly has elements of cult party (the old fashiony/antique doll styling, use of Tokyo Boppers and dreamy tulle) often with fairy kei colours, I wouldn't exactly lable it as either though; cult party kei isn't even a genre in Japan so I'd be interested in how Etsuna describes her style.

>What got you into J-fashion?
A mix of early decora and lolita when I was a young weeb. I only ever attempted decora, but I loved looking at street snaps of both growing up.
>Why do you like it more than western fashion?
I like that a lot of the various fashions or even just personal styles are very feminine and soft. I find it really hard to find equivalent styles in the west. Here it seems that feminine is more form-fitting curves and that's just not my thing.
>What kind of japanese inspired things do you wish western fashion had more of?
More softness. Give me lace, ruffles, more creams and beige that aren't for more mature women.
