I want to request old photo-shoots specifically. I really love seeing those.

I will do a small dump of some pictures I have in a few minutes. I have something I need to do first. Sorry about that.

I'm not a cgl regular, not really a fan of it, but I decided to start this thread because I'm feeling very sad and alone and I don't have any friends to talk to. I was hoping some vague human interaction and some happy nostalgia would take my mind off things.

Does anyone remember the first picture of a Lolita they seen?

I can't remember what picture it was, but I remember that I went "oh that's really cool!" and then closed the page and found myself dreaming of it. I decided I needed to know more and see this style again, but forgot what the heck the style was called so it was about two months or so until I finally re-traced my steps and found the web page, and then from there I checked out EGL and was hooked. I sure wish I could remember what picture it was that I seen.

Old school will never die man. Now that I'm an adult with a proper job I'm tracking down the pieces my 13 year old self wanted, or just capture the "feel" I love. So lots of early-mid 2000s pieces will find their way to me.

>>9101875
It is indeed! Meta's 2004 series from this image set to be exact. Been lusting over it since I saw it in an English GLB. I got really lucky finding it!

>>9101885
It's so comfy, but crazy hot!! And a little big on me but that can't be helped. I'm rolling in the jelly of your black version. Black x white is my jam, there's a meta op from roughy the same era I'd cry if I got ahold of in black. I'll try and get coord pics, although it'll be six months or so before the weather is cold enough to wear it. I got it as a set (cape, bonnet, head eating bow, hair ties) so I was stupid excited. Might wear it for winter ILD.

Just to roll along the conversation, what do you consider old school wardrobe staples?

Heh. I did indeed snag it off there. Saw it and was throwing money at my screen so fast I didn't even realize it came with the bow/hair ties. I like the green too, but green or red velveteen feels extra Christmassy to me so I try and avoid those colors since they feel more limiting. The blue is a bit of a greenish navy irl, such a lovely color.

I think green comes up more often than other colors for the velveteen series, hopefully you'll get your hands on it someday!

What sort of old school / "lifestyle" activities do you gulls enjoy to try and keep that old school spirit alive?
Lately I've been looking into books that can rekindle the spark for me, mostly etiquette, home economics, self care / beauty, and recipe books. Does anyone have recommendations for me? So far I've really been enjoying "The Ladies' Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness" by Florence Hartley. It's on Amazon but you can also read it on archive.org since it's from 1873.

Ohh I so hope one day I'll eventually be able to afford tracking down the dresses my teen self dreamed of too. I don't have the funds for Lolita things right now so I've been trying to admire the details and things I love about the dresses I already have. My wardrobe is small and no "big brand" so far, sad poorfag here, but hopefully I can change that soon!

>>9101946
Ohhh this sounds super interesting, I'll have to look this book up later when I have the time.

While not Lolita, I occasionally visit the "Gothic Charm School" blog. There's some good stuff on there, even though a lot of it seems to be dominated by youngin's asking nooby questions. And of course, Lolita used to be more intertwined with the gothic scene than it is today, so I consider it kinda relevant.

Right now, I'm not doing anything overly lifestyle like that I wasn't doing before Lolita. Like my tea drinking or other artsy, romantic interests. I've been working on trying to rekindle my lolita spark a bit too, but I'm finding it difficult. Things are just different than they were back in the mid 2000's. Being an adult makes stuff harder. One thing I'd like to do is get some Lolita pajamas. All the nightgowns they sell at stores are so ugly I can't believe anyone buys them. Sleeping bloomers would be adorable too. I know bloomers are easy to make but I'm not good at sewing and I hate doing it. I made my own bloomers for wearing under my dresses and it was absolute torture.

I read an Anime/Manga/Games/Japanese culture magazine and there was an article about Shimotsuma Monogatari and Baby the stars shine bright. The first pick I saw was Momoko in her blavk and white coordinate, sitting in a train/metro looking a bit sad. I was really young, 12 I guess, and my mom showed me dresses from Baby's website and said I would get one when I would be older. She fell in love with them too. I decided that one day I would become lolita and I did. My mother don't like the dresses too much anymore tho.

I think the first time I saw anything lolita related was when I got to know about Malice Mizer and Moi Dix Moi. I think I saw a picture of Mana from a GLB scan, posing for Moitie. It was somewhere in the beginning of 2005 and that's how I got in touch with lolita. I can remember browsing the BTSSB website, looking at all the pretty dresses I would have loved to buy. But as a 13 year old it was impossible because it was either too expensive, and buying from Japanese sites wasn't as easy as it is nowadays.

My first 'frilly' dress was something by the brand Queen of Darkness or Hell Bunny or something. I later found out it was a replica-ish thing from something by Bodyline but hey. I was 13/14 and finally had 'my first lolita dress!!!'
I wish I still had pictures, since I coorded the dress horribly now that I think of it. I didn't had any accessories and Mary Jane-ish shoes where too expensive for me.

After that, I gave up on lolita for a long while but now I'm starting to love it once again. Maybe it's because as a 13 year old I never had the chance to buy and wear the dresses I wanted, that I'm now spending money on lolita. Honestly, I don't really mind if I'll never be able to wear a dress to a meetup or anything. The feeling of nostalgia in owning a dress is more important to me. And well, I love fashion, not just lolita, so some clothing items hold a big emotional value to me haha.

I don't have much pic's of my closet but here is one of my oldest items. I like the old AP tag and the build-in petticoat the JSK has.

I happened to snag my dream dress and while it's kinda bordering the old school mark already (2005 AP) it has the feel I love in old school. I love the details but the simplicity in the same time. My heart almost hurts when I see the things I will never get on my dream item folder. They have the feel I'm not able to find in the nowaday's trendy items. I was lucky to get this dress in perfect condition, I haven't yet to wear it but I just adore the little cherries in the lace and all. Mine is sax, another impossible sax to coord...

pre 2006 lolita in all its forms is pretty much considered oldschool anon - it's not all platforms and rectangular headdresses, although those items have become its signature style.

Stuff like this >>9102141
is super oldschool, original fully formed lolita fashion if you like

Then you have early print looks etc like this from around 2005 >>9102144

None of it looks like current lolita fashion really.

Please don't start arguing guys. Keep the thread chill and positive.

And yes, 2006 and below is consider old school, and I find it acceptable to post anything OTT sweet in here because modern Lolita looks very different than it used to.

>>9102033
It's one of my favorite Lolita photo's so I can understand why!

>>9102133
Anybody know what this picture is from? I am super fond of it.

>>9102324
It's cute to hear that your mom was into it too, even if it was only for a while.

>>9102399
This is so cute. And it's definitely old school! I love prints like these.

>>9102496
I with the Lolita community at large was more into it. My heart always sinks when I hear people talk about how ugly they think it is. New school Lolita is amazing, but I just don't want to wear it. In general, I'm not a fan of anything made past 2010.

Princess Portal made me fall in love with this dress/skirt. Sleeping beauty isn't my favorite fairy tale, but seeing how sweet and elegant this skirt is with it's castles and roses just won my heart. I'd love to fins this in blue one day.

I wrote a reply about how I find blouse to be important in the old school look and how newer blouses don't do it for me but my phone decided to shut the internet down as I was posting it. However, cutsews are a good alternative but the older ones can be really ugly sometimes. I wish someone made old school style blouses with fabric that didn't wrinkle so easily and was easier to iron.

This thread is always a huge inspiration, I'm so tempted to dress up! Unfortunately I live in such a place it's super unpractical unless I'm really going somewhere else. On the top of that my old little poodle is sick. Someday I will find all the old school poodle things for her memory.

>>9103670
I think old school blouses often have a lot more lace detailing which is also like in the bigger role. Also details like full shirring and lacing are more common in old school blouses. If they have peter pan collar it's wider and sleeves are too. I think they are a bit looser too. Also material, they are often that wrinkly as hell cotton and lace are cotton lace too. Sleeves would be long, puffy or detachable and collar either peter pan or square. I actually think they are a lot fancier than blouses nowadays, except those princess sleeved blouses Baby makes.

I think it's just something that can't be put into words put you can tell if it's or if it's not. It's such a weird feeling.

What are the usual going prices for old school Meta velveteen pieces?
I got a 3 stage frill OP that comes with a petticoat-ish slip skirt, JSK from the same series and also matching kc, all in the same blue colorway.
The OP is missing one of the removable bows on the sleeve though, but otherwise it's in pretty good condition. JSK is in perfect condition too.
I paid 18000 yen for the jsk alone, not sure how much it would fetch on the western market.
Should I sell it as a set? Should I trade it?
What prices would be realistic?

>>9103696
You paid way too much for the jsk unless you got it years ago as I have seen those going for like 5-9k yen on y!j easily. However, the velveteen OP will be worth more. I would say $95-135 for the jsk and 140-180 for the OP, though maybe not on the high end as its missing the bow. I would sell the jsk+ headbow or op+ headbow, not all 3 as sets. You can add a bit more onto the jsk or whatever if you add the headbow as a set.

Lace topped OTKs are on my list too! Sadly finding them is proving to be a challenge. I just need white, ivory, and black ones with nice lace damnit. Just got a black rectangle headdress, black and white is next.

>>9102404
I would very tentitively say yes but don't dream of pushing that number. And ideally be a couple inches smaller because as solid as these dresses are they're still old and the seams shouldn't be stressed.

>>9103678
I like the lace and sleeves of Oldschool blouses but my god do I hate wrinkly cotton. I've kinda resigned myself to finding newer poly/chiffon blouses that have an old school feel (sausage sleeves ect) because I can't deal with the effing wrinkles.

Actually can we get some Oldschool blouse inspo now?

The tie in the waist is weird, it's just a ribbon which ties back. Otherwise cute and those knitted strawberries are so cute.

A similar collar as in the last one. Not sure what is it called but it seems to be popular in older blouses.

It was a decade ago anon. It's not "classic oldschool" but it's on the edge and not exactly offtopic if it's something that looks exactly the same as something from 2004. Pic related.

I like the colour combination and slightly different feel of the outfit here, you can feel deco-loli beginning to creep in.

You should post a photo of the tag when you get it; that will help estimate. They haven't had many tag changes over the years, but there are still some significant era signifiers out there.

I have the OP and can confirm that 94cm is the comfortable max on it. You can maybe go a little higher, but at that point it would be getting tighter to too tight.

Old school was already a term in 2006, things could be old school in style still though but the Garden OP is not one of them.

Does the color of the tag matter? I recently bought a Meta dress which havea really old schoolish feel but I doubt it's actually old. Lolibrary didn't have it. Wish we still had Hellolace because it had so many pre 2010 dresses Lolibrary don't have.

I found her on d_l, it's definitely the same person. Her oldest posts are from 2010 and her style is more OTT sweet than the typical sort of old school you see in these threads.

The letter placement on the tag matters more than the color (I think there's only one or two color variations?). I have tags from 1999, 2000, and 2001 that all have the same lettering, and then pieces from 2002 where it's changed to be closer to the modern lettering. It's really tough to tell with Meta, but if you post a photo in the next oldschool thread then I'll compare it against mine and hopefully find an answer.
