There is a huge social difference in the west between using the hammer and sickle an using a swastika. I don't really care either way, but even if the Russians did something awful it doesn't have the same stigma because they were allies with the west. The swastika after WWII has been used exclusively as a hate symbol, even if the Nazis stole it to begin with. Many benign parties still to this day use the hammer and sickle because it means more than just that one period of dark history; it's still common in politics that do not espouse hate.

I think the difference again has to do with what anon said about the hammer and sickle being more a political symbol than one of outright murder and genocide. The Nazi swastika is used ONLY in that context- to represent the Nazi party, which had a genocidal intent as one of their pillars.

Knowing what the Russians have done to your people or to your region, obviously it would be in very poor taste to wear or advertise a bunch of hammer and sickle paraphernalia. On the other hand, if I wore a hammer and sickle shirt to, say, a political rally in Massachusetts, it wouldn't have quite the same effect because most likely the people in Massachusetts associate it with communism, not the brutal enforcement of it on a particular people and region.

I think it has less to do with the political ties between countries and more to do with what each symbol represents-- The swastika ONLY represents the Nazi party, which is equated to genocide and the holocaust whereas the hammer and sickle represents an ideology that has been expressed and used in a variety of contexts-- including, unfortunately, genocidal ones.

Unrelated, i'm part of quite a small comm and recently we have had a few new members. They are quite young and a bit ita but so far both of them have been really willing to try to improve and have been respectful of older members, listen to advice behave at meets etc. I can't really think of anything either of them have done wrong, sure their first co-ords havent been great but they are young and new and are taking advice on board and trying to improve like i said, so i don't think they should be faulted for that.

However one of the older members of our comm is being quite hostile to them. At meets she is usually fine, but on the facebook group she gives what she says is "concrit" but is mostly just borderline insults. The two new ones are finding this a bit upsetting, and i think its gotten to the point where most of us would rather have them in the comm than the older one, if it comes down to it. We have tried asking her to be less harsh/to be constructive without JUST criticising, but she just starts on about "tough love, they need to learn" and stuff like that.

What do you think we should do? Give an ultimatum about not being a bitch, and then ban her if she doesn't? We have tried to be understanding but there doesnt seem to be anything going on in her life that would be making her like this and taking the stress out on the new girls, but for the most part she has been ok up until now.

I think its gonna be ultimatum then out if she doesn't change, its so sad that 16 and her friend were super excited to join and meet us, and now they are considering not coming to the next meet because they think its their fault that there is tension in the comm now (i've told them ill make sure they sit with my friends and i, and have invited them to my house to try making accessories since theyve never done that).
