I'd disagree. The outfits from the America's Suitehearts video are pretty distinctive, and Dr. Benzedrine gets cosplayed every once in a while, but they're from a period of time where people weren't really paying attention to them.
The Sixteen Candles outfits are blander but they're at least merchandised (like the weird action figures), and they have costumey details like Pete's teeth or the hunters' vampire guns.

What's wrong with cosplaying real people anyway? It's what people have been doing since forever. Hell, look at drag queens. Or pretty much any normie halloween party. Everyone dress up as real people so seeing the cosplay community reject that is really weird to me. VK especially was a pretty integral part of the scene just a few years back.

Most performers aren't exactly ~themselves~ on stage anyway. 90% of what the public sees is either highly distilled or downright constructed. In some cases the construction is part of the deal from the get-go (Gorillaz, Studio Killers, etc.), other artists adopt personas depending on current projects (Marina and The Diamonds, David Bowie), and most just utilize stage outfits and song writing and music videos to present a distilled and more sellable version of themselves. The Rihanna you see on stage is HARDLY the Rihanna her friends and family know, or if it is it's definitely not the complete picture.

In general, if your stage outfit is extravagant enough to cosplay, it's probably because your stage persona is a good step away from any real person.

By that logic it'd be weird to dress up as characters voiced/acted by real people, because there's usually a good amount of personal touch to them. How about pretty much any Robin Williams character? What about animated movies where the character animations are often influenced by the voice actors personal quirks? Ziggy Stardust is not David Bowie, Lady Gaga is not Stefanie Germanotta, and Taylor Swift the superstar musician is not Taylor Swift, someone's daughter/girlfriend/cousin. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of comic/book/movie characters that are FAR more personal than a lot of pop/rock star personas.

So chill the fuck out and let people do stuff that makes them happy and literally doesn't harm anyone.

My most recent costumes have been of Papa Emeritus from the band Ghost. I'll be posting several images.

So, for the first Papa costume I did, I did Papa Emeritus III, in his casual suit AKA the "Dead Astaire" outfit. I actually did a meet and greet in this costume, mask and all! The band loved it - and the real Papa shook my hand and said he was proud of me. Was a great night.

This is the papal robes that Papa Emeritus III wears, aka the Satanic Pope attire. It is made out of the EXACT materials that the real deal is made out of, so it's insanely accurate. I've also drawn up "as accurate as possible" high detail center patches for this costume, as the ones in the images are the "simple design" ones he has, whereas mine has the intricate design around the Grucifix. I'll be wearing this to their September 30th concert, as well as doing another meet and greet. Pretty excited.

As long as the artist they are cosplaying has an interesting or distinctive costume is not too diferent than cosplaying an anime or videogame character.

In my oppinion, when people start putting on a wig, make up or sunglasses and casual clothes and call it a cosplay is when it starts getting creepy and crossing the stalker/roleplay/obsession line.
Why would you want to cosplay a guy dressed on jeans and a t-shirt? Only thing that saves that kind of cosplays from being creepy as fuck is the cosplayer looking a shit ton like the people they are cosplaying, because they clearly have a reason to do it then.
