Are there any nice dresses with a houndstooth pattern? I know there is a recent AP print with a hideous color combination and border print (whip collection?) and an older one with milky-chan. But I'm looking for something in black or red.

I've already looked into lolibrary and most of the stuff are indead coats and ponchos. The dresses mostly have a really small pattern, they look almost grey-ish. I'd rather have a bigger, more visible pattern. I'm already looking into coords of the pink and lavender whip collection, maybe you can coord them right. It's a shame the black colorway uses birghtly red accents.

Does anyone have experience with IW's corset JSK cuts? The L is a better fit for me lengthwise, but my bust/waist measurements are better suited for the M. If I get the L and tie the lacing back, will it look scrunched up and weird? Or should I just suck it up and get the M with an underskirt?

I bought one because of the length even though I'm a M in IW also, and I could've worn it had the print suited me because of the corset lacing. The quality of the lacing is much better than baby, it is actually functional if you need it to be.

Seconding the bar-type clips over the little pincher clips. The pincher clips unless well padded risk putting indents into the material and screwing things up. I personally prefer wood though.

a question of my own: I'm going on an extended vacation soon, meaning I'm going to be spending nearly a month away from my closet. The problem is is that I currently live in an insanely humid climate and I'll be away during the peak of this. What I'm worried about is my dresses molding while I'm on vacation. I was already considering packing my closet with silica gel, but anyone with more experience with tropical climates have anything to add? >> No.9081808

>>9081774
Use the same principles you use for paring down the rest of your wardrobe. If you don't love a piece, let it go. You can also try to focus on building a capsule lolita/otome wardrobe with a consistent colour palette and components you can easily mix together.

As with most minimal wardrobes, you would want to focus on getting a smaller number of high quality pieces and only adding things to your collection that fit well and suit the accessories or main pieces you already own. Some people also set a limit on the number of pieces they own and commit to selling a piece if they bring a new one into their collection.

I think Meta will always be around honestly. They have a dedicated fanbase (mainly in Japan these days), and they've got something for everyone. Their summer sailor series is a consistent hit, and so is their winter velveteen series. They also have a habit of having dark horse hits; you won't hear anything about a meta release for ages then all the sudden everyone is going nuts, or something will be released and a year later everyone wants it. Meta also has a lot of love among oldfags.

tl;dr: People have intense feelings for meta (one way or another) and they release enough variation to be interesting.

Moitie in contrast is a study in a brand lacking adaptability. They cultivated the image of an elite brand with limited releases and limited sizing, along with an extremely high price tag but with quality to match. This worked for them in the late 90s/early '00s when Visual Kei was a huge thing, Mana himself was popular, and Gothic was the dominating lolita style. But when the winds changed, sweet rose to become the dominating substyle, and Visual Kei itself dramatically declined in popularity Moitie failed to adapt. They don't churn out releases like AP, Baby, or Meta, all of which offer almost monthly releases, while Moitie is more seasonal. Their prices are still high, while the quality has declined, and they aren't quite the status symbol they used to be. They've also been unable to adapt to thematic trends, and their occasional style changes have alienated some of the people that still love gothic (their photoshop disasters come to mind) Gothic has been in a ~10 year slump, and Moitie is feeling that badly.

Sorry if this is a bit incomprehensible, I'm rambling.

Really? Have you payed attention this year at all? Meta is doing better than it has been in a long time. It's having plenty of bloodbaths that could compete lately with AP.
With AP's lackluster releases this year, Meta has been really outshining them with their classic creativity and not shamelessly remixing older designs and concepts like AP is doing.

>> No.9083301

>>9083242
You know, you summed up perfectly what I think a lot of people feel about Moitie now. There's a difference between oldschool and being completely out of touch and also outdated in your design, approach, and concepts.

Prints took lolita by storm and they really, really failed to adapt to this well. All their prints have been more miss than hit and taobao has sadly picked up the slack where the Japanese brands have failed in terms of interesting gothic designs.

MmM could've easily been the Japanese gothic brand to keep gothic going strong and steady. Hell, they still don't have any competition in terms of high-end Japanese brands and act like they can barely compete.

Outdated is a word I would agree on. I think that the popularity of prints contributed to their decline, but moreso their deviations from the prints and style people loved. Their architecture screen prints are amazing; bold and deceptively simple looking. Their photoshop disasters though sent people flying away in droves - the only acceptable print from that period was their Stained Glass.

Another problem is the cuts; they're too simple and plain even in the solids. Don't get me wrong, I don't want OTT rufflemonsters from Moitie because I love their simplicity, but a couple extra ruffles on prints or some new interesting cuts wouldn't hurt. They've tried to go back to their old style a bit lately, I think I'd really enjoy a new Moitie with their old style screenprints but updated cuts.

I agree about Taobao picking up the slack on prints for gothic (although I feel like a lot of them edge into classic sometimes). Actually Taobao is kinda what's keeping gothic going; Moitie has been meh, Boz is hard to get (and leans more boystyle), and AatP has fallen harder than Moitie. But brands like Dark Box, Ecailles de Lune, Fox Feathers, and Knight Night all seem to be releasing gothic stuff that at least looks good (I own none of those brands personally although the prints appeal)

It's sad because I remember when I first found lolita Moitie was one of my first loves.

KL honestly hasn't released anything good since Mozarabic Chant in my opinion, except the Phantom of the Opera blouses. They've all been rather garish to me. Their prices have skyrocketed as well, and they're harder to get a hold of than pretty much every other brand because they only take overseas orders through Clobba, who marks them up further. All that plus their insanely long reservation times make people take their money elsewhere.

So, thinking of really getting into this at last. Thing is, as a male, I'm pretty tall, and while passable, I don't think shorter, cuter dresses will work well on me, so I want to try something long and elegant, something to complement my height of 6'2".

I like the basic shape of pic related, but I gotta have more frills and/or lace to it, or something. Not a fan of prints, and my favorite colors for dresses are black or brown as a base, with whites or not-too-hot pinks in the details. As someone who knows nothing about how to look for this stuff, or where to purchase, would any seasoned lolitas know of any possible examples of what I'm looking for, or where to look to buy?

I realize I'm probably being vague, so I'll see if I can sketch something up. In general, though, I want something with plenty of frills and ruffles (which seems to be the norm anyway), but with a shape and length a lot like this.

In advance, thank you for bearing with me.

I mean length-wise it sounds like maybe you'd be interested in EGA/aristocrat? Lolita dresses - like actual, proper, guideline-fitting lolita dresses - don't typically come in *that* length. I don't think I've ever seen a proper lolita dress that long. The longest ones I've seen are tea-length dresses which are more like calf and ankle length, so maybe those would interest you?

I'm the anon who bought the kon, just received mine last night.

There's no real problems with mine, no fraying fabric, no loose threads, no out-of-place anything. Can't really say whether the previous anon got unlucky or I got lucky in a sample size of 2 though, I guess.

As for the other details:
- The ribbon lacing is indeed the high quality matte cotton. I've missed it since Sugary Carnival, so I'm very happy about that.
- The peplum colour is indeed different from the usual navy, however on the kon it's just darker, near-black, not dirty or grey. The same fabric is used for the ruffles on the dress itself, I think the kon version does look pretty good with the darker fabric as it helps the details stand out.
- The loops on the peplum are finicky because the waist tie buttons are shaped like sea shells, which makes them finicky, and you use the same button for the waist ties as well. You don't really have to use the loops, but I have to say I quite like that they'll stop the peplum from shifting around.

Overall I actually thought this was one of AP's more worthwhile dresses just in terms of the amount of detailing. The neckline alone has two different lace and a delicate braid, and the straps, peplum, bodice and hem all have different lace (the hem lace is trademark AP style with seashells and AP's initials on it). Just about everything is either trimmed with lace, lace and ruffles or has pearls or bows or something on it.

The print on mine skews a little green, though. Not sure if that's because the background is blue so the yellows look greenish.

For all of you who are saying that Moitie fell behind the times and are in a rut, do you even follow releases? Moitie has changed a lot over the years and set a lot of trends such as chiffon prints, long lengths, gold tones, etc. Some of their prints were lacking but their releases over the past year have been going in a great direction and some colorways still sell out over reservation. Plus they have always been slower to sell out, even Iron Gate took awhile. As for quality, it hasn't declined at all. I own about 150 Moitie items and have had quality issues with only one. I wish that they would start using their softer and more delicate chemical lace though.

Their problem is that they don't release certain items often enough such as basic socks, bags, bloomers, gloves, parasols, etc.

I'll come clean with you. We don't know what you are. Both dresses you posted are more like costumes than lolita. You're pretty much in the wrong thread, you're looking for costumes that you think sort of look somewhat like lolita. Meanwhile no one's answering because they're looking at your photos of costumes and can't figure out if you're trolling, a newb or just lost.

That said, here are the sites you want:

http://www.fanplusfriend.com/
http://www.milky-ange.com/

Both companies make non lolita costumes. Milky Ange is more popular for their maid and other costumes. Fanplusfriend started out as a cosplay shop and will sew up any design you send them. Neither are popular among lolitas and I would suggest you don't even bother joining lolita meetups in anything resembling the pics you posted.

If what you wanted to was to actually dress lolita instead of being in costume, here are the sites to start with:

http://thelolitaguidebook.tumblr.com/
http://lolita-handbook.livejournal.com/

Do not come back until you can figure out why we think the two photos you posted are costumes and not lolita at all.

I actually agree entirely, though. I didn't know before about the length thing, true, but I could tell the latter pic was more of a cheap costume, I just liked the general style of it, but being well-awake now I can see how ridiculous it is for me to have posted. And the first one not being lolita, just a reference for the shape.

I'm taking a look through your links now, and I appreciate the help and responses so far. I'd rather be a legitimate lolita than settle for knock-offs, and I can easily see the quality difference in most of the dresses posted here compared to the references I found. Finding a community or going to meet ups is definitely something I want, and I wouldn't buy anything that would be considered unacceptable, hence my questioning.

I am new to this, visited the board a few times but never gathered anything from it, and have been too shy to give this stuff a shot until now. I'll try not to be bothersome, and thoroughly look through this material before anything further. Thank you.

cgl, I'd like to hear your opinions.

If I made a one-off print dress that is "inspired by" an indie brand, what sort of backlash should I be expecting? Or none at all, given it'll only be a one-off home-made dress for myself?

It's just. I kind of like this dress, but a lot of the LU comments on this release simply say "not again, not after last time", which I guess means there's a long wait time on KL releases. At this point I'm thinking I could probably throw together some clipart and vintage graphics on spoonflower and make a similar dress myself. Won't be as good as the KL version, but at least I don't have to stress myself out stalking clobbao to put in an order and then waiting for KL to ship the dress. Plus, I really don't like what KL said about charging higher prices for Western and Japanese lolitas.

Thoughts? I'm almost certain I'm overthinking this, but I'd like to be prepared for any flak I might catch when I show up to a meetup in a home-made "inspired by" dress, or when I post an ootd to my tumblr/insta.

Are you experienced with spoon flower fabric printing requirements? Have the hours to design, proof then construct a lined dress with hidden zipper and rushing on chiffon?
Even then it will cost you as much in materials as it would to buy the dress and if you pull it off well and coord it nicely, what will you have? A copy of a marginally popular, mid-priced dress.
Why?

Have the skills and knowledge, yes. The crepe is my choice actually, I like the tooth ( like chirimen). I wouldn't be able to print it on jacquard like what I think KL is going to do, though, I'll have to settle for adding a repeat damask pattern to the background instead.

The dress isn't technically difficult. The underskirt is in fact dot tulle netting, it doesn't need to be hemmed. Pre-pleated tulle trim is available from taobao, though probably not double layer tulle trim. So there's a little work, yes, but not miles and miles of pleating and hemming, no.

Cost-wise, spoonflower 3 yards plus shipping is likely to run me around USD120-ish, the rest of the stuff from taobao is likely to cost half that, less if I reuse from my sewing stash. It's a decent USD85-100 less than USD267-285 clobbao was charging for their previous print.

The upside of making my own is being able to make a low-waisted dress with an open front, instead of having to choose between high waist or open front.

That, and I might actually get mine done faster than KL ships theirs out, if those comments from their previous print run is any indication.

I'm not looking to make a direct replica, it will be done with clipart and whatever free vintage art I can find and clean up, since I'm not looking to overspend buying graphics for it either. All done, "my" dress will only resemble Krad's in layout, the open front, the underskirt and the general feel.

Still, someone is bound to make the connection and start asking, though. How bad will the fallout be if I outright said "yeah, this was inspired by that, but I didn't feel like buying the original from the indie brand and made my own" ?

>> No.9085393

Yes and their better fabrics are much better but also more expensive. But you have to know how to design and set up the files and even not counting the hours she'd spend on construction, to use the better fabrics get some printed and line the dress with anything decent would cost as much as the finished dress, and this is assuming she has intermediate sewing skills already and also assuming she can also draft the pattern she needs or adapt one. I'd say yes it is worth it for a custom if you want a unique dress and sew well but just to copy something off taobao? Nah.

>this is going to be a lil long but I'm a tall lolita who wants to help!

hey anon, there are definitely brand dresses that will work for you. I'm 180cm and the key for me is knowing my measurements. If you love lolita enough you'll be able to enjoy spending countless hours looking through piece after piece and being able to train your eye to what will work on your body. have you worn any normie dresses? get a feel for where your waistline is, and also for how the bodices work for a minimal bustline (that can be a major advantage for you). Make sure you know the length from your shoulders to your waist (in order to narrow potential purchases down based on how the bodice will look), and always pay attention to skirt length (waist to hem).
You can definitely get away with dresses/skirts that end just above the knee. browse lolibrary.org to see what is out there. then you can google worn photos of the designs you think could work. also, start out with a manageable color scheme

how would you describe your hair thickness/straightness? I am always a fan of curly bobs, especially with bangs, so perhaps wetting your hair and sectioning it into curlers to wear overnight with a scarf or bandana covering your head would work well. that method consistently gives me dramatic curls that stay put.

Aquarium Carnival OP anon here, I received mine on Friday. Seconding that I didn't have any quality issues on mine.

I think someone was asking about the bodice and as someone with a large bust, it looks perfectly fine as long as you have a good bra on. The 'bodice' part ends right where my breasts begin yet it still sits at my natural waist so I don't think it's meant to cover one's breasts.

The only thing I'm slightly annoyed about is the zipper clasp placement, instead of ending a little under the sleeve like most OPs I have it clasps at the armpit which makes zipping it up a bit difficult. If you have large shoulders I wouldn't recommend this dress. AP also gave me two small pearl chains but there's nowhere on the dress to attach them so I'm not really sure what to make of them. All in all I'm pretty pleased with it though. The lace and details on the dress are beautiful.

That "Sailor Moon" on the banner, though. It's like being hit on the head by a newbie fan going "lookit this cool new anime I found! Would have been better if they went for subtle and just put something like "in the name of the moon" or "For Love and Justice" or some other catchphrase.

>>9086835

There's a lot of difference, though. Replicas are mostly hated on because they're being sold by people who didn't create the art, they just scanned or traced the original. Hence they don't deserve the money or the accolade, because they have no talent to actually create anything by themselves.

Here the artwork looks to be done from scratch, not traced or stolen. They stole the ideas and the layout, but the drawing itself is this person's own talent. Even if your morals about replicas extends to stealing ideas (whole other clusterfuck there) you gotta give props to the artist for at least being able execute a nice drawing.

This is correct, however >>9086835 was right.

It is clearly a knockoff, not a replica. There is a difference, but not all knockoffs are created equal. I would say this is equivalent to a replica because of the sailor moon design and copyright infringement.
Normally I do not mind knockoff or "similar" products - heck, lief did another gold print border print that looked similar too - but this is just as bad as a replica.

That said, I have no issue with pic related, and cannot explain why. It's the same idea of a "parody" print, but doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth like the sailor moon/puppet circus one does.

Lol like half of Etsy sells Sailor Moon shit, the motifs and the name. No one has faced any legal action yet. Tons of fanart is sold at cons. It's strange that you are focusing on the Sailor Moon part of it being theft, when it's clear that it wasn't just "inspired" by puppet circus, but a straight rip off of the design with minor details changed to be sailor moon. Something being inspired by the print wouldn't be so blatant with copying the design, but feature a gold on velvet sailor moon print, maybe in a silhouette style, with different composition altogether, or at least not blatantly tracing the curtain, bows, garlands, floor, ribbons, etc.

That's why they're asking if you're paying for tracked shipping. If it's tracked then usually the seller will invoice you, or at least ask you to send payment for "goods", not gift payment, so then both seller and buyer have the tracking to prove whether or not an item arrived.

If you're the one that requested non-tracked shipping, then generally sellers request gift payment. That way you cannot file a paypal dispute because you chose to save money on untracked shipping. If it's the buyer who chose a less secure method of shipping to save a few bucks, it should be on the buyer's head if the item doesn't arrive, not the seller's. That's why anon above says it's normal to pay for an item via gift if you're not paying for tracked shipping, it's so the seller isn't held liable for the buyer choosing to save a few bucks on shipping.

Lastly. Gift payment generally costs less or no paypal fees. So if you want to save some dollars the seller will request you pay by gift instead.

Of course, so much of this depends on what you negotiated with the seller. If you didn't say anything and the seller is the one who chose untracked shipping and requested payment by gift, then it's certainly somewhat dodgy, you should message the seller and tell them you want tracked shipping and a paypal invoice. Be prepared that the seller might say they need to charge you 3-5% paypal fees, technically they aren't supposed to do that either, but again, a lot of this depends on what you actually negotiated with the seller.

When would the best time to visit Japan for Lolita shopping be? I always thought it was around New Year's for lucky packs but after thinking about it, they are all on reservation anyway. Still a good time or are there better times?

Didn't it dip down to 99 already? I think holding fast isn't bad, we had been slumping quite awhile even before credit, I got 102 a week prior. From what I hear Japan's pissed their PM is wanting to raise taxes, so things might get better unless you get new releases from a SS.

Peacockalorum's chiffon ones are beautiful, well made and so reasonably priced. I brought a black one and I love it, but a friend of mine got a lovely soft gold colour and it's the prettiest thing ever.

I was there for New Year's and it was awesome. There were lucky bags you could line up for at Laforet without reservations. The popular ones sold out fast, but many places still had packs leftover in the afternoon. I then saw a bunch of lolita stores had general 30% off sales during the week that followed. However, there are some store closures around New Years because it's a big holiday there and many people take time off. Shopping during lucky bag time is extremely hectic and crowded as well. I've been there at other times of year, but never for any big holidays, so I'm not sure what other times they are likely to have synced up sales.

Opening a store is like their lolita DIY/hobby over there. Lolitas make their own dresses and have access to all the clothing manufactures locally that can make it happen. I love that there's more options now, esp for gothic

They just mostly show a few pages of advertisements though, not full magazine scans. I'm against uploading full scans but then I buy my magazines so that's why. I wouldn't do more than an advertisement or some example photo, not even a full article or photo spread.

Well, IP theft and also danger of the magazine failing obviously. Like the English version of Lolita Bible. If everyone mostly just reads scans and no one buys the mag, what do you think happens? Too much sharing out and then no one gets it becUse the magazine fails. Everyone just thinks 'oh let someone else buy it, my one person little scan download habit doesn't hurt anything'. Then times 100 or more. It matters. Plus if you are used to overseas shipping and time the buying so you get a few in the box or order with other items, they aren't even really that expensive.

I agree somewhat. I also buy magazines. But having old magazines online are appreciated as it is still inspiring and they can be difficult to get ahold of. Many are no longer in publication. New magazines in Japanese aren't for the western market so Japanese mags aren't likely including us in their sales demographic. I agree about the English copy though, that should have been encouraged to buy. I honestly just wish they'd sell emags, I'd buy tons of past magazines.

Koakuma Ageha stopped for a while and Kimono Ageha is gone completely. I think Spoon publishes less frequently. They may not figure in a western buyer factor but I think boosting the international interest and sales is always a good thing. It just kind of burns me that with new(er) things like Larme (which obviously when new wants and needs support), gets scans begged right away and ongoing.

God this is so dumb. Without a tracking number, sellers have ZERO protection. With gift payment, buyers can just do a chargeback through their bank/cc, and since it's a "gift" payment, even with tracking there's no seller support because that type of payment is not for merchandise.

A CC chargeback is possible even with an invoice and tracked shipping, and a really determined scammer has even more ideas up their sleeves to keep both the dress and the money.

For the casual/honest paypal user, it's not actually that easy to file a credit card chargeback anyway. You're essentially shafting over paypal, I can't imagine they'll continue letting you use that account and backtracking your transactions as you please, so basically you can kiss your paypal account good bye. You're also going to have to explain to the bank that you willingly clicked to send a payment, and then instead of working things out with whoever you somehow need the bank to do a chargeback. They really aren't as happy to do chargebacks all that easily, since it opens the credit card system for abuse exactly as you described, do it too often and you'll find your account under scrutiny and maybe even some restrictions on your credit card, to "prevent future fraud".

Anyway, as I understand it, the practice is really to hammer home to the buyer that the seller isn't taking risks just so the buyer can save a few dollars on tracking. Some airheaded buyers really don't realise that they're buying an expensive item from overseas and still asked for untracked shipping out of habit or something. Telling them to send the item via gift payment and explaining it's so they can't file a paypal dispute seems to snap them to their sense more than explaining how you have no way of ever finding a dress that goes missing while being sent across oceans.

I actually liked it, because it humanized her a bit. Fanny is one of my "lolita idols," but I always imagined her being as elegant and proper in real life as she appears in her photographs. Seeing her be a bit awkward and clumsy in her high heels, and being less than well-composed gave me hope. I thought it was cute.
