How do all you cosplayers and lolitas support yourselves and your hobbies? I'm talking about paying the bills, not just living with your parents and working part time for minimum wage.
I'm wondering if there's a variety of different career choices or if most of us gravitate towards the same kind of work

I've worked in tech support most of the time, if you know how to deal with morons you can get a pretty high salary. The best money is in night/holiday shifts which are usually when support is in low demand anyways so you get money for goofing off. Also as long as it's not face-to-face support no one cares how you dress, just don't let it get in the way of your typing or headset and everything is fine.

This. Also the term 'high minimum'. Ha. Better be having a job that has the minimum wage for that position being at least $24/hr or something to live alone depending on where anon is located. That or talking out their ass since they support their mom too. I can't even get a lease with my boyfriend and I'd 30k combined a year because apparently it isn't enough, but apparently I can't have my parent cosign either because then we make TOO much. I do a few jobs.
I'm normally an English teacher over seas, but I had to come home for family reasons for a bit and my next job doesnt start till Spring (since thats when the school year starts in my next gig) so I've been doing odd work till then.

In college I got a side job writing and reviewing sex toys online, still doing it today. Weird job, but it helps me build up my savings, practice my writing, and its my primary source of money for my hobbies like cosplay. It doesnt pay super well (cent a word) but combined with my second job its more than enough for me to get by.

Otherwise I restock magazines for a family friends company, at least for the summer. I have a job lined up at a haunted house starting in September through October so not sure if I'll hold down all three at once or let the magazine one go. I really only need the two jobs at most to keep enough money going for my hobbies and pay for my living expenses. Thankfully things are pretty cheap since I'm staying at home with my dad right now for various reasons.

Where I live kind of rapes my wallet, but I split rent with my boyfriend and put plenty away in my retirement fund and my emergency fund a month, so I would say I am pretty comfortable / content atm.

Uni town preferrs to hire kids in school cause its better than hiring local people who know employment laws and wont stand for being mistreated. Ha. I'm actually guilty of still living with my parents, but I live in an area that's one of the most expensive places in America to rent. There are some animal hospitals that will hire and train you, though it's always preferred to have some type of animal hospital experience. Even if it's just working as a kennel person.

Living in a studio alone, and I cook a lot at home. I'll buy a lot of meat or carbs during sales and freeze and use over time. At this point in my life, most of my life long friends are pursuing grad school elsewhere or have moved away, which is a little sad, but having less of a real life social life really cuts down on the eating out, or Friday nights at bars, etc which was probably why I was always broke during undergrad.

If you're in a good market, worth. If you are in a bad market, NOT WORTH!!!!!!!!

SM/ASM are salaried for a minimum of 50 hours a week you have to work at less than what the average fast food manager makes hourly (when I was SM I was making at most an equivalent of $13/hr, that's if I got out on time every day) because there's a huge push for "bonuses." They encourage off-the-clock working for the sake of the brand, saying "Jimmy John worked open to close every day for months and so should you!!" at their training, try to get salaried people to work in shop/drive on their days off to save labor, and for like I said, less than the average manager in your area. I work in upstate NY where average managers make $11-15/hr depending on how high ranked you are for what equates to $10.75 if I get out on time every day. However, you're in a store that's constantly busy and your franchise doesn't completely suck? Go for it! (I've been waiting a month for health insurance and over 6 months for them to deal with workers comp form when I sliced my finger last January).

TL;DR: Good gig if the stars are right, shit gig if your store owners are corrupt fucks, maybe stay with Starbucks if it pays better.

I interned at Viz half a lifetime ago and had to letter a couple pages for some magazine stuff. Thought it was fun, so I asked around. They asked for my resume and then gave me three or four pages to letter as a test. Turned those in and a couple months later (dunno why it took so long) I was told that I had basically passed and was put into a folder of letterers. Luckily, a couple weeks after that I was offered a series and slowly but surely I got enough work to letter full-time. If you're interested, make sure you know how to use Photoshop and InDesign, and then perhaps contact HR through jobs@viz.com (I think?). I don't know if they're accepting letterer applications right now, but it doesn't hurt to try.

You could also try with one of the other publishers too, of course. I do a book for Seven Seas, and they seem to have a similar process. Maybe just reach out to them through social media and they'll let you take their test? (Seven Seas is also only partial sfx cleanup, so it can be a bit easier if you're just starting out!)

Pay varies… It's paid by volume now, and I currently get anywhere from $900 a book to $2300 a book. Depends on the series. Difficulty doesn't always seem to factor in, IMO.

Synchronizing lights is actually a bit more complex than it may seem. First, the obvious is that you can only synchronize in one direction at a time. Currently, intersections are very localized, so their timings are based on relative flows from the streets they serve. You can't really sync a light that's giving 90s-30s main street to side street when the next one is 90s-45s. Same thing goes for the signal pattern: some lights have left turns from each side going at the same time, while others put the left turn at the beginning/end of the green.

But the entire industry has been slowly (since the 80's) shifting towards Intelligent Transportation Systems and viewing the entire network as a whole. To be honest, a lot of the math and processing speed/power isn't there yet. Even a small town has a huge amount of intersections, each street with different flows that change hourly. Plus there's also the bureaucratic side of things. Municipalities don't want to give preferences to people coming off the freeway if it's going to screw up the side streets etc, and it's difficult to get different governments to talk in general.

So yeah. It'd probably be better if those lights were synchronized but it's difficult to tell if it'll screw up something else, or what the best way to do it is. But it's a continuously changing field and it's super interesting so I'm pretty excited! Sorry for the long post.

Because your retail hell is part-time you could work out what field you want to move towards and find a company where you can ask to shadow someone for a few weeks to get experience of the field, or join a temp agency. Having recent, relevant work experience will help, as will the fact you have shown initiative and drive about entering that field. The thing you should definitely do either way though is work on your CV/resumé/application forms. For each job start with the job description and see what experience you have that meets each criteria- which doesn't have to be from working in retail- you can draw on skills from other areas of your life like education and hobbies too as long as you can show you understand the role they want you to do. Basically it's a skills based approach rather than a list of jobs and qualifications, because you are spelling out for the employer how your experience is relevant.

Tl:rd recent experience in the field helps, but more importantly make the employer see how good you are because they are lazy and have loads of applications to read so yours has to stand out.

All my teaching bros in this thread! I just took a break from being a high school teacher (Eng, Gifted, Psych) and teaching a semester of college (teaching Freshman Comp is the worst job ever)... I'm in line for a high school art teaching position now though. I am REALLY hoping it works out because I'll be less frightened about my cosplay getting out. Faculty generally have an idea that I'm a weirdo. I dress up as the Fourth Doctor during our costume day each year. But like, being an art teacher means you are by default assumed to be a weirdo. So I feel like I'd care less if my hobbies spread around. All my art and cosplay accounts got closed years ago when I started teaching... would be nice to reopen stuff again.

Also, power to you SPED teacher. Good SPED teachers who actually give a shit are rare. My neighbor was an inclusion teacher who did jack shit and belittled his kids. But, you know, he was a coach,... so no one in administration cared.

The store I work at is just horrible; management and employees are mostly old ladies that are childish and lazy. Managers laugh and talk shit how they are going to give us young employees who actually bust their ass less hours and how hilarious it would be; because playing with people's wallet and lives is so funny apparently. Could try and target small mom and pop shops work cheap improve signage promos etc. and eventually online web presence (think wordpress) there's always a handful that are luddites even if they feel they dont need it just go out there and do a quick yelp search and hit (visit and talk to see if they might be interested - have ur mini portfolio sample ready) and follow up because stubborn ppl eventually give in. This shouldnt be a secret but obviously do not belittle these mom and pop shops for not being on the internet etc., being super nice and informative goes a long way, they will remember you if were an asshat and will call someone else when they change their minds.

My friend did exactly this and some referrals came from just being upfront and honest to them (especially the asshat-graphic/web designers that came before her lol) assess their needs price competitively - eventually a webonline presence can land extra income if you handle updates etc for them either monthly fee pic, promo updates things like that easy.

I make a decent amount of money $14/hr as a specialist but once I'm certified, I go up to $20/hr then to salary from there. I live in the Midwest so it's actually a crazy amount of money for me.

I've always done more art and stuff on the hobby part of /cgl/ and general anime/japan related stuff, never really had enough disposable income to make costumes or get outfits until a few months ago.

I quickly(2 months) saved up $2k after getting a job doing lash extensions while cleaning the school I go to afterhours for $12/hr. I also have a booth that I rent to perform services out of, and I get freelance makeup stuff through that. I'll sell a couple of pieces of art here and there but that doesn't happen as much anymore because of lack of time. In a way I have 4-5 jobs + school. As a result I drive nearly 1,000 miles a week.

I hate working this much with school and I can't wait to be finished with at least class and cleaning, but it's nice to know that once I am past an upcoming visit from my bf as far as spending/saving goes I'll be more than able to do things that I've been waiting 6 or 7 years to do, especially once I get MT licensure. I'll need to move out and go to real school tho, that's the only way I can keep the hustle goin.

Here, I have probably a dumb question but I'm interested in pursuing medicine; it's been something I've wanted to do all my life and I need to at least try even if I can't do it.

What's the process for that? You have to go to a regular college first and study the field, then you get into a medical school right? I kind of don't know how college and stuff works because I didn't go right away after high school--wanted to but for several reasons it didn't happen and I'm almost happy it didn't.

What would you, or anyone advise I do? I haven't taken any of those SAT and ACT things, did all of the ones that don't count and never took the one that would have been sent off to wherever I applied. At 22, am I gonna look like a dumbass trying to get into college? I feel like I waited too long and they're going to think I'm stupid for sending in an application anywhere considering what I want to do even if my application looked really good.

Med student anon here! So first of all, you'll want to decide what branch of medicine you want to work in. Do you want to be a registered nurse, a doctor, an osteopathic doctor, a physical therapist, the list goes on... And by the way, it's okay not to know. You can always try shadowing in some local medical facilities to get an idea of what you'd like to do.

The processes for those things are all very different! However, the best place to start for any of these fields will probably be to consult with a local community college or a university you're interested in attending. There should be people in the admissions department of wherever you're interested in who can give you step-by-step advice covering what you'll need to do (tests you'll need to take, what you'll need for your application, etc.)

It's definitely not too late for you. In fact, people with non-traditional academic backgrounds who push through and succeed anyway are often /more/ appealing to medical school admissions committees. The people in my school come from all kinds of backgrounds, and I mean all kinds. Don't give up! Happy to answer other questions, if I can.

By medicine do you mean MD (doctor)? Because the field is vast with physician assistants, nurses, technicians, etc.

If you're in the US, you need to go to college and get a bachelors to apply for medical school to be a doctor. You can literally major in anything as long as you finish the prerequisite classes like biochem and a year of writing. You'll also need volunteering and research experience.

You should go to a local community college or university and talk to a counselor about planning for your bachelor degree. Also join clubs - there's a ton especially for underrepresented populations.

Just going to warn you that pursuing an MD is a shitton of work. I've met so many dumb pre-meds dreaming of being a physician to be rich or because their parents are in the field. And then they give up once they realize that they have no actual passion toward the academics and/or helping people in need. I'd highly recommend shadowing (following a medical provider during their work to see how their daoly tasks are) or at least volunteering to get a sense of how the industry works.

Thanks for clarifying anon, and that really made me feel better about it. I never considered that they might appear better off for what I have done since high school, because it's not like I did nothing.

I forgot that it's such a wide field that it's kind of important to know what I do. I don't really know for sure, but I definitely want to be like a freelance medical illustrator + something. The something being some kind of research doctor or maybe a medical examiner. I understand the lack of need in many cases to go to a university especially right off the bat, but I have no interest in going to community college. I didn't go to community colleges for my licenses, I'm not going to get a degree from a community college, especially if I can reasonably afford not to.

Those sound like great things to do; what would be the timeline that I would get all of those things done if I were to intend to apply for next fall? I don't want to have more than a year gap if I don't need to between MT school and real college and I graduate in November. Would it be appropriate that I approach admissions people around Nov-Jan, or would sooner be better?

I intend to make a list of mostly in state places that I would like to go and am considering out of state but I will need somewhere that has somewhat decent reciprocity for my licensing so it's not like I have to do 600 hours of school to make a living there; luckily the in state schools are all relatively close to one another and I will more than be able to work for good money with my trade in the areas that the schools are in.

Another factor playing in is I may even go out of country to where my boyfriend lives, but that is almost a pipe dream. Don't want to but really want to at the same time, I'll sort of see how it goes.

Thanks for your answers anon, I think these will help me in my current situation as I know what I want to do, I just don't know how to go about it.

I'm not really in it for the money, or absolutely certain of exactly what I want to do. I just want to do something extremely productive. Part of it is because I want to see my name just somewhere saying "hey this person came up with this cool shit by looking at guts all day and it's going to save so many lives/change the world" even in some small respect. I know I can learn these things and apply myself enough to be very good at it, I just need the place to learn it.

I already have a career, that if I play my cards right I can fall back on comfortably. Especially if I apply the ambition I have for medicine/science shit to having the most bomb-ass career as a massage therapist I can, because it's possible. Intend to use this to work my way through everything, and I can make it relevant to my studies; I can work in doctor's offices, I can work in a medi-spa. Sort of have my foot in the door so to speak as far as that goes, but there is only so far a ~massage therapist~ can go, or be taken seriously.

If you think you're gonna do research just don't expect to be able to freelance, work clinical, and research, and be prepared for the fact that most research is not about the ground breaking innovations but begging for money or doing politically appealing rather than health needs related research. Some of the most important stuff that would actually make a difference to a huge number of people and save a huge number of lives is not the cool new surgical technique or the treatment for a rare cancer (although that has the heartstring tugging ability to get you money, and you get your name attached to it). The things that actually help on a population level are the unglamorous public health related data about healthcare systems, unequal access to healthcare, and how fucked people are by the current system. Or things like screening programs, improving vaccination uptake, improving housing etc. The issue is no one wants to hear about the inequalities and potential improvement because it costs money, there are significant financial interests in keeping the system the way it is and people complain about socialism and nanny states if you so much as try and touch legislation.

I would say approach them as soon as possible, because there's going to be a lot of logistics and things involved before you can even get an application in, I imagine. I couldn't give you too many details about the undergrad admission process these days, as I went through that about 6 years ago and was helped along greatly by my high school academic counselor. Those days seem so long ago orz

I'm on my way to being a research physician myself. You'll probably want an MD for that, at the very least. If you're super ambitious and patient, you can go for the MD/PhD. You can also look into working as a research coordinator once you have your undergraduate degree and see how you like working with participants/patients. Also, if you end up at a research university, be sure to work as an undergrad research assistant for course credit! You'll get a feeling for whether or not research is for you, or at least figure out which branches of research appeal to you. A medical examiner is also going to need an MD degree. Not sure about medical illustrators, though!

There are tons and tons of options out there. Once you're established at a university, your advisors can give you a lot of ideas that would be good specifically for you. c:

So you want to be a medical illustrator and another profession? I think that's kind of unlikely - I know a illustrator who does work for medical textbooks which is a completely different career itself that she got by getting an art + biology degree in undergrad and then lots of networking.

Sorry I'm kind of sleep deprived but I'm not really understanding your plan. If you really do want to pursue an MD then you need to get a bachelors, do all the prerequisite classes, start volunteering, and have some research background (preferably wetlab). Oh and study for the MCAT for a few months nonstop.

This is a process that can take years to complete, there's a reason why pre-meds take gap years or pursue a post-bac degree since their GPA sucks - all in order to be a competitive applicant.

If you're really serious about this, you'll need to consider how many science/prereq classes you can take, when you can volunteer in a hospital/clinic/community center/etc. Try talking to a college counselor at community college or an admissions counselor at a local med school. They'll be happy to help.

And if you want to focus on research solely, that's another monster itself. Prepare to deal with bitchy PhD students, pipetting for hours, doing presentations, and everything - that can result in no paper because the whole experiment was a failure. Or you can't even get your name on the damn thing because the lab has more important members.

I can say this because I'm currently a pre-health college student (though I'm pursuing PA instead) who counsels other pre-med/nursing/health students as a part-time job. For now, research all the different health/science/medical jobs and try to narrow it down. Have you considered public health as well? It's a vast field with many specialties that are research/math based (biostats, epidemiology) to more focus on education.

I got a degree in Graphic Communication, and it does help, but not to the point where I wouldn't be able to do the job otherwise. It's more the knowledge of various programs, the print process, and publishing spec that really helped. I have total free range of fonts for SFX but Viz has to own any dialogue fonts I use. I've never found it to be much of a problem because most of the time when I want to use something they don't have, they'll buy a license for it so I can use it. SFX are usually done in Photoshop, so the fonts are manipulated to fit the look and won't be necessary for the final bitmapped file. Dialogue is done in InDesign, so they do need the proper fonts for legal reasons. At least, that's why I believe it's that way.

As for the cosplays themselves- I've got a few dedicated "fans" (more like friends at this point, we talk every day and they're genuinely nice people) who bankroll my costumes and order my supplies for me. I had to give up making costumes for a while until these folks showed up to help out.

I'm at a quant hedge fund and a few of my coworkers are definitely weebs but not cosplayers. I still cosplay, but the long hours make it so that I basically only make one cosplay a year. At least the pay is amazing.

Hopping in on this because I was in a GMO lab for walnuts for a while. The modifications we did to the walnuts were to
>improve resistance to pests/diseases (which are a huge fucking pain, moreso if all the crops of one type of food are nearly genetically identical - think bananas)
>help the babby walnut shoots grow better with a higher survival rate (again, boosting resistance against molds and diseases)
>improve the walnuts' marketability - make them taste better (not bitter), make the kernels bigger and nicer in colour
>make more variation in the harvest times for walnuts (so you don't get all the walnut varieties reaching harvestability at the same time every year, thus flooding the market)

Genetically modified foods aren't inherently bad - they're one of the most ~*future*~ things in the world right now, but they've been vilified through shitty companies that exploit GM crops and farmers.

>community engagement and volounteer work
At cons, in your local cosplay/lolita community, for local charity and second hand stores, etc. This shows that you don't just sit home and do nothing, that you're willing to put in work for stuff you care about, and that you're just all over engaged and helpful.

Also helps slightly with the feeling of uselessness.

>calling back yourself
Make a list of all the stuff you apply for, and once a week go through it and call back to the companies you applied forthe week before. Just tell them you applied, ask how the recruitment process is going, and highlight your interest. It will make you ten times more likely to stick in their mind.

So now I'm arguing with HR in my current role about reducing my hours a tad and trying to complete all the freelance projects I'm working on before the new role starts.

Because of that I left the house at 8.30 this morning to do full shift at museum, then went straight to the uni to do archival research and when I get home I have to work on another project (2 weeks until I need to get it to the printers).

I love that my career is going places, that I have enough in the bank to pay for the rest of my PhD and a massive trip to Disneyworld next year...

Wish I could do photography full time, but I think i'd miss being able to teach people how to actually care for their animals. The store I work at has really educated employees, and it's nice being able to defy the 'petstore advice is bad advice' stereotype.

I'm just so sick of telling people not to put goldfish in bowls, and having every parent come in looking for a 'Nemo fish'. did you even watch the movie? Pretty sure you missed the point of it.

In-house web designer.

It's a small company so the pay isn't all that great, but the boss is really flexible about hours and so long as I get my shit in I can take three day weekends for cons.

I mostly invest in Jfashion at the moment and occasionally lolita, but I work part time as the manager of an ice cream stand for like $9 an hour.

Annoying as fuck, but it pays alright. I'm really breaking my neck with every order though, but since I'm living with my parents I suppose it doesn't matter.

Another vet tech here. Make about $16 / hr after working at the same place for five years. Been here since i graduated/got certified. My hospital practices really good medicine which is why I don't want to leave. Heard about a lot of bad vets our there. One of the vets at my place is incapable of giving any fucks about anyone but himself and recently my hospital had been short staffed so work has been a living nightmare for the past couple months. We went from twelve great techs to about six and at this point I hope they hire any Joe schmoe. Strongly considering going into pet grooming or just working at petsmart.

I manage a small vintage/antique furniture/bits and bob shop, been there 9 months now and make $12.50 per hour. Started doing Saturdays and covering the manager when she wanted days off.
Then the owner was watching the CCTV to see how I was doing and found the manager slacking off 80% of the time.
She'd spend more time "on lunch" or having cigarette breaks out the back or have her friends come hang out in the shop and just sit in the back and lock up in the hours we should have been trading.

Needles to say the manager gig is pretty sweet. We're not too busy and rely on small sales on things like records, old costume jewelry and scarves and then one or two big sales per week.

We've got a sewing machine from the 50s behind the counter which was for repairing stuff but I'm allowed to use for my personal stuff when it's quiet. And I have a pc in the shop too so I can sit on the internet and just fill the time on cgl when I have nothing to do.

Only problem is it's a really old building and really creepy when I'm in on my own. And takes between an hour and a half and 45 minutes to get to so I'm losing pretty much all day. And we're open every day but sundays so it's really limiting me going to conventions at the moment.

I want to hire someone to take some of the days off me and to cover me when I want to go to conventions but all the college kids have gone home now and it's right by a campus and there is no one around.

I guess stick it out until the fall. I think I'll just hire the first freshman I see when they start to move in. I'd really like the job go to a kid who really wants a job like this.

We do get some really nice old dears who come in and sit in our little sofa area and have a (free because I'm nice) coffee and tell me stories back about back in the day. One of them made me a cake at Christmas.

You should use the fact your parents said you were too stupid for a degree as fuel for the bitterness and determination to get one. That's what most people do

My job varies by week and I do pretty much anything I can. This week I'm an art camp counselor and a pet sitter. I wake up early, go take care of a cat, go to work at camp, go walk this dog, then go take care of the cat again

I work at a bookstore near a college campus. I make enough money for myself that I don't need to dip into my boyfriend's earnings (he works as a computer technician)

It's also great because I can get books at a discount and read new comics and manga after hours.

I'm studying to be a vet, so I hope this works out.

Cosplay photographer here. I work two jobs. One at a bookstore, and the other at an office supply store. Even though I don't make that much at either place,I've gotten to know a lot of cosplayers from ringing up manga, and the office supply store is handy for when I print business cards, and for when I finally get good enough to start making prints.

Different anon but at all the unskilled part-time jobs I worked while in uni the boss would whine at me about how he could have hired an 18-year-old to do the same work for cheaper. Now that I'm 25 I've pretty much given up on ever finding anything in retail or waitressing and am focusing purely on things that require a degree.

I work retail. It pays the bills, my hobbies and I have enough left to eat well.

But I have no career plans, I've always been garbage with school. I've never been smart, but always been alright with art, so I figured Art school would be the thing, too bad it's way too fucking expensive.

Love this life.

I work as an assistant costume designer and lighting technician! Usually I do contract positions, I've just finished working on a production and have begun work making prosthetics for a theme park! In the winter I'll be working as a Tailor/Inventory Clerk!

My job(s) are great because I get to be flexible - I'm going to PAX Prime to work in promotions for a retailer there!
