I hope it's ok to ask this here: how long does it usually take to finish a piece? I just comissioned a water color portrait from a well known Japanese artist and he told me to "wait for a while".. I'm afraid to ask directly since I don't want him to feel rushed or anything. I know comission work can be stressful

i know its OT but this stuff makes me wonder. I have some dolls I use for posing because I need a certain pose/angle etc and angles fuck me up so hard. So I usually take a picture and use them as a base while changing the body type/ features etc like that example.

It kinda makes me feel scummy but I dunno, the rest of it (coloring, and majority of the body shaping, and clothing/etc) is stuff that I drew myself? eh..

There is nothing wrong with reference. Even the greats use photos for help. It's just a matter of changing enough to make it yours.

that depends on what you mean as 'use them as a base'...obviously you own the rights to your own photos so it's not illegal and if you're just using them for dynamic poses that's fine, even tracing is fine legally.

however tracing is going to make you suffer a bit as an artist. when you trace, you don't have to create the shapes, and end up missing out on some technical skills in the process which also makes it a bit hard to have your own defined style. but using them as a reference is fine.

yeah i trace them at times when it comes to different angles. I can draw things facing forward or 3/4s angle just fine, but when it comes to like, things from above or below my brain cannot wrap around how the shapes are supposed to change.

I do constantly try to use them just as references but sometimes theres a huge difference between what just comes from my brain and tracing over the pictures i take. makes me feel like such a hack but i dont see much improvement when i don't trace them..

Yes, going from live models and real life references is the best way to learn contour, but tracing can be a helpful supplement so you can get an understanding of how others translate something if you just don't get it or to have something to go against to be more confident in lines (especially for beginners who have just gotten digital tablets, hell even tracing basic fucking shapes can help with this). I understand you're trying to warp what I'm saying to justify your analrage or whatever, but I'm not even saying that tracing is the way to go to learn or even practice art, but it is and can be an exercise. A tool's a tool. Some work significantly better than others, but that doesn't mean it's not a thing.

Then again, there's people like kr0n who make a living off of stealing, direct references from other drawn art and tracing, so this person could also have a future in art if they get good enough at bullshitting and throwing around edgy filters.

I don't mean to be harsh, but you need to figure out what clothes work for your body shape. Your limbs are so thin, but the shirt/skirt combo you chose make your torso area look like a block. Anon you are on the right path. I don't know why people want to be rude bitches to you in a draw thread but here is what people could have said.

Your make up seems not fully applied but it also looks like maybe it was and you were out for a decent amount of time and never did a touch up or it was cheap make up that doesn't last as long as it says it does. (think drugstore stuff)
I know how much it costs to preorder one of those shirts cause I got one too. And it sucks that they only come in so many sizes. Because of your weight I think you should get shapewear.

Also no one here likes the non tucked in look but in my opinion, tucked in makes everyone look fat. Like everyone in the 80's looked fat.
This is probably why you left your shirt untucked? Or perhaps the skirt was tighter than anticipated?
I'm not a huuuuge fan of the skirt but maybe you can wear it with something else cause it just kind of looks like an awkward extension of the shirt.

If that's the look you're going for, I'd say alter those pieces and sew them together and then maybe add some to cover the seam? Like waist ties for a bow or a belt that has a menhera theme on it?

I don't mind the rudeness. It was unexpected in this kind of thread, but it's not unexpected for /cgl/ so I'm not shaken up by it. For some context, this was a very quick outfit done last minute for a friend's fashion show since one of her models representing jfashion dropped out and she preferred for me to do menhera since she had like fifty lolitas already. I'm already working on plans to make it better and really do appreciate all the criticism. I'll find something that would flatter me and won't post anymore pictures of this outfit, sorry about that.
