I just got into cosplay but my friend suggested that I do DIO and he would do The World. I've been trying to teach myself how to sew but I'm still not knowledgeable about different materials or how to style the wig. DIO is a pretty ambitious cosplay for a newbie, especially if you're not experienced with sewing. You might have more luck doing part 1 Dio, either this http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130724160834/jjba/images/2/2f/DioBrando_ASB.jpg or younger Dio.
That said, it's best to go to a fabric store to see the materials in person, and decide what kind of drape, weight, etc. you want. Go for something thicker in weight, avoid anything shiny or stretchy, and remember to press your seams and iron it when it's done.

Uniqso is probably the best atm for any cosplay contacts. They make quite a few sales through the year and there's plenty of cosplayers sponsored by them that have codes available for 10% off.

Spandex is the way to go anon.
I've made pant shoes a few times already for JoJo cosplay and the best way I've found to go about it is get a pair of boots that are fabric or faux suede type.
Make/sew boot covers and handsew them onto the boot near the sole using a curved needle, then sew pants to shoes.
It can be a real pain and I reccommend having a thimble and strong needle but it makes the cleanest result as opposed to say trying to glue it.

Metallic blue spandex is nice for Johnny. Unless you want something more matte.

Spandexworld has good spandex. Ebay isn't a bad place to get fabric either if you know what to look for, I've found some good stuff.

Just make sure whatever you get is 4-way stretch spandex.

So I'm going to a con with my second cosplay ever, is it a big deal if I cosplay as Jotaro with dark brown hair? I'm not sure if I want to use this spray I got (all wigs I could find looked like shit and I didn't have much time left) because the hair would stain my hat and potentially my coat black. Your best bet is to maybe get 2 pairs of those, one for the leggings and one just to make shoe covers. Make the shoe cover come up high enough like socks and wear the leggings over top if that make sense. So it will look like you have pant shoes but they'd still be seperate.

Why woudl buff = sexy? Look at the jojo girls themselves - a lot of them are attractive, but with a few exceptions none of them are portrayed as overly sexy (clothing wise). Unless you are cosplaying someone like Dio that fucks everything that movies, you should stay true to the character.

All of the hat parts are sewn. The top circle is sewn to the top of the hat and the backside is sewn together. Horns are folded in half and edges sewn together, stuffed then handstitched to hat.

The outfit looks really well done! Some minor suggestions for the next time you wear this costume is to remember to take your phone out of your pocket for pictures, and practice with makeup to make sure your application is cleaner. I'd suggest using foundation to even out your skin and possibly a setting spray to make sure your eyebrows don't get smudged. (And I'm not a personally huge fan of drawing lines on your face, especially for Steel Ball Run characters but that's just my preference.) I really like your eye makeup though!

Not at all, although I generally cosplay alt outfits and just go with whatever colours it was drawn in, which does leave me with wigs in multiple colours for some characters. Only exception is if I know I won't suit a wig colour or I have a fabric I desperately want to use but it's not in the original colour scheme so I swap to another.
If you do want to palette swap a costume, consider how the colours will look with your skin tone as well as which ones you like best to help decide.

I think your costume is ace, anon. Gyro is definitely someone you can pull off well. The other anons already pointed out the (minor) flaws but to add to them you should really remember what JoJo is all about and...pose!

Gyro has a plethora of cool poses and while you deifnitely tried to emulate some you should really just go all out. Exaggerate! I think that's what makes most good JoJo costumes gureito. Looking forward to seeing actually good pictures of this!

Can someone maybe help me? I'm looking for a good enough sewing pattern to use for Koichi's jacket. I'm not so great at altering patterns.

How do you guys feel about fabric for the uniforms worn in part 4? Originally I was going for matte suiting fabric but I like the way pleather looks.

Be aware though that the back vent/pleats are a bit wonky due to the pattern being an older one and may need some altering/adjusting.

It depends but personally I'm a fan of the matte suiting material. It's what real uniforms/Gakurans are made from anyway. Also you wouldn't be sweating to death that way either.

This is my first serious attempt at cosplay, I purchased a sailor suit for $30 and got rid of the shitty elastic pants for $10 white jeans.
I got some fabric sewn on the hat and shirt for the stripes that weren't there and fitted the shirt to hover over my waist, I removed the button from a baseball cap and found a pin from my old boyscout stuff to make the button for the faux-necktie. I'm not sure where to look for material for the ring that keeps it tied so this keyring keeps it in place for now.
I added green duct tape to a destroyed belt since I could not find a green belt in any store.
Now I search for purple dye to alter these worn charcoal converse since I can't find any purple converse or any shoe for that matter. The only store I could think sells it and craft foam would be Michael's. Until I find craft foam I might just paint some cardboard.

I know a lot of people want to get fancy with Jojo fabric, but I don't think pleather would really work for a gakuran. I think if you want to get fancy with the fabrics, look at the different satins/sateens at least.

Agreed completely and you brought up something that I think is really important when you said part 4 is hard to get fancy with. Picking the fabrics to suit your part.
Part 5 I think is the first time pleather and out there fabrics should start being used, with the exception of a few characters (seeing the banana suit in new and interesting things brightens my day). Even in part 5 I feel like thought should be given to the character, Fugo costumes made out of pleather are a major pet peeve of mine and I prefer seeing nicely tailored Burnos and Giornos out of suiting than shiny pleather that doesn't sit right. Part 6 is the only real part you can just go crazy in my opinion, after that, in 7 and 8 things need to be toned back again a bit. With 6 I think you should go crazy, Jolyne costumes made from cottons look so wrong.

I'm hoping to cosplay Rohan, but I'm having trouble deciding on what to do with the wig. I realize I'll need to style it myself, but if anyone has any suggestions on how to get it to poof & flipped to the side I'd be super appreciative.

I recently styled a Rohan wig for a friend and used an Aphrodite from Epic Cosplay. (If they don't have the color you need similar wigs are Blue Steele, or even Jaguar from Arda)
Basically something long in front and short in back.

I side parted on the top and as long as the wig is thick you wont have an issue with the wefts showing. I teased the front long bit, sprayed with got2b freeze spray and trimmed where needed. The rest of his hair I just trimmed down really short with a hair razor to mimmick his undercut.

Get ready. Jnig is going to be cosplaying from Diamond is unbreakable.

I got the hat I wanted to use for my Hol Horse cosplay today, and machined out the ball-thing as well. I also have a really nice pair of boots with spurs, and my dad is helping out with the leather cuffs.

Here's a pic of the ball-thing on Hol's Hat, made from 6061 aluminum. I'm going to prime and paint it tomorrow. I made a slot on the bottom to attach it to the hat, as well as two very tiny holes I can run thread through to secure it on.

I have to design and model it all out first, program each cutting operation, load in the tools and prep the material.

There's a lot of setup and design involved, but once I have it in the machine and its all ready to go, I can hit go and watch it sculpt it out.

You could always use worbla + craft foam, or sculpt something from scuply. If you use Aleene's Super Fabric Adhesive to glue them on they're not moving.

Or if you know someone, you could get them made as patches.

Now I just need the shirt lines, wrist bands, finish the hat stars, and the front head piece.

OK so in a panicked week-before-con decision I'm going to be Ringo Roadagain for animazement. No way I'm going to a con for 3+ days without a jojo cosplay at a jojo photoshoot. I'm machining out his 1874 colt SAA in literally like a day or two, cylinder will be temporarily borrowed from my emperor. All aluminum and hardened steel. Its somewhat basic but will look nice and get the job done in the EXTREMELY short amount of time I have to do this.

**iron the non-paper side to your fabric - this fuses the glue to that fabric
**on the paper side draw your lines or whatever shape you're going to be cutting out so measure how thick and how long you need the lines to be beforehand
**follow your lines and cut the shape out of the fabric
**peel the parchment off of the fabric - this will expose the glue underneath
**iron the newly exposed side to your sweater and that should bond the two together

the box comes with instructions too so just follow what it says. its pretty easy

i wish i had a better pic of this particular cosplay overall but this method is how i did the lettering on my GD Street Jail jacket and it ended up looking pretty clean so i'm happy with it
