was anyone else kind of disappointed by the Capitol looks in the film? In the books they're really unpleasant (implanting whiskers, horns, ears, dyeing their skin, lots of surgeries, etc, to stand out more and more) but in the film it was just like outrageous Lady Gaga style.

>> No.8767144

I liked it t.b.h. because it was a much more obvious connection to real life media culture, where people already dress like this. It would have been nice to see some more over the top styles but making your villain(s) really ugly on top of evil seems boring to me.

I feel like the over the top style worked in the books but when you translate it visually, it's too silly for the world of the film. The idea behind the OTT appearances of Capitol citizens is that the Capitol is so absolutely disconnected from the life in most of the districts, they have the time and money and general luxury to come up with crazier and crazier styles and aesthetics. At banquets and parties, they aren't worried about hunger: but about being able to try everything, hence the liquid that makes them barf.

The style of the film accomplishes "the District is this wealthy, shallow, disconnected place so oblivious to the starvation and poverty of most of Panem" without crossing the line into being comical.

Pic related. Ignore the guy but the women's costumes are based on the prep team from the books. (Although I remember the girl's skin being more pastel green than dark emerald, but it's been a while)

I would actually put it down more to the cost of the necessary prosthetics than just the fact that it would go into goofy territory. You can't devote too much time to dressing extras, after all. And prosthetic make-up takes time and effort.

You also can't run the risk of letting the extras be people doing it themselves, because the quality won't match, or the actual final aesthetic will be all over the place.

Plus, having one or two that really stand out (ie: Tigris) makes for a bigger impact in the end.

That bow doesn't look properly strung...and that being a real bow could be dangerous...

>> No.8778751

>>8778595
I can see what you mean, someone's not checked the string, but it should be fine just for pics like that. however if she tried to do a shooting pose she could accidentally either pull it into the right position, which is just a scare (strange sound and string 'gives' more suddenly), or the string could snap down from the notch making the bow unstrung + possibly damage it and her.
tldr check your prop safety and know what shit is supposed to look like

>> No.8778755

>>8778595
>>8778751
If this was shot at a con, a lot of cons require you not to use a real bowstring, even on a real bow. It's possible she's just put cheap elastic on instead, and that it got stretched out doing poses where she had an arrow nocked? The other possibility is that it has no give and was left over-long for nocked poses, then wrapped around the end for at-rest poses. That would account for the slack, since she wouldn't be able to wind it fully tight without any stretch.

At least, those are my guesses.

>> No.8778758

very correct, I forgot about con safety rules. could've wrapped it around the bottom end, would've looked a lot neater. I'm less concerned about this Katniss' safety now tho

>not use a real string

that's even MORE dangerous...seriously, people don't realize that the string isn't the part that does work. It's the arms. If ya'll are gonna use a bow as a prop, PLEASE use a fake bow where the arms are already "pulled" back.

She's using a real bow and those arms being stretched back makes it just as dangerous (if not more) than a properly strung bow.

The lesson here kids is please use a fake bow where the arms aren't actually being pulled back.
