I have a feeling this is someone from /s/ just trying to get things to throw into their latex thread. Most superhero outfits look horrible in latex. Leather works better. Not only that, but it is impractical. Latex doesn't breathe. That's not exactly the best for running around several hours at a time.

Im talking more about the examples posted already. How they don't look good in latex. Spandex is less shiny and wet which can make it appear less feitishy, but a lot of the outfits look just fine in jersey and make more sense to how they are drawn or animated. Not every outfit is overly highlighted to make it appear latex. Characters like Black Cat, Cat Woman, other clearly meant to appear sexy outfits are purposefully drawn to give off the fetishy and sexy look. That's how the character is and that is how their outfit is portrayed, but get someone like Hawkgirl or Wonder Woman and you can tell the difference. Then you have someone like Black Canary who you can tell uses leather rather than latex for her one piece.

Im giving an alternative to latex if they want the shiny appeal. Supergirl has different costume highlights depending on the artist for the comic, so her outfit is actually dependent on the cosplayer's overall look they want to achieve. I agree, however, that Supergirl should be more in a jersey in general. As are a lot of outfits for superheroes. It looks better not only in photos, but you will have a better time walking around for hours on end.

>Latex thread!
What are some costumes/characters that latex works well for?

Characters that already have skintight and shiny outfits, mostly comic book characters and sci-fi characters. It's a bit of a gimmick these days to make ____ costume in latex for the sake of it, when it's not in character or a shiny costume to begin with. It looks lovely if its fitted correctly and lubed up!

Pros:
+ gets that shine that pvc and wetlook cannot
+ smooth and more skintight than pvc
+ acts as a body shaper like spanx

Cons:
- exhausting to wear after a few hours
- can be ripped or torn if caught on sharp objects
- needs handler for shine/zip
- expensive to make and buy
- bruising can occur at joints if not enough lube is used to put on
- amplifies outside temperature

>>8733077
That's me. I work part time for a high end latex brand at the moment and own a few cosplays that translate well in latex.

I say you should buy a small latex piece like a pencil skirt and test it out if it's for you.

Latex I think works better for

>evil people or villains
Evil tends to be more showey and flashy than good.

>more sexual characters
Not just as in "hot." there's lots of characters who are sexy and/or show curves without being necessarily as sexualized. Catwoman vs supergirl up there is a good example.

>dark color combos

>bright or primary colors
Maybe this is the limits of the material to start with, but because it LOOKS so over the top to start, it doesn't make sense with more subtle character designs or color combos

If its a pencil style long skirt (to the knees+) I don't wear underwear to avoid pantylines but if it's shorter or flared I wear those seamless basic undies to show little to no lines. Don't need to wear them for pants or catsuits but I recommend getting seamless panties or a basic thong for bodysuits since the sweat/lube can slip at the crotch if it's not a wide enough covering.

From what I've read on other boards, catfish's quality is improving. They may still not be able to compete with European suppliers in quality, but if you're willing to risk it (their price is ~1/3 the Euro shops) the price is right. Just prepare to be disappointed.

Their Eva catsuits *are* pretty cool, but if they'll obviously be catfish suits to anyone in the know. That said, you'll be wearing a latex plugsuit and they'll be in a basic seifuku so who's the boss now?

A little of both.
Latex can be transparent but can also be made pretty opaque. In this case, it looks like it is slightly transparent as you can see it even though it's smooth on the outside (i.e. it's not just texture on the outside from being tight). And if it didn't fit so tight, even if it were slightly transparent you probably wouldn't be able to see through it so well due to scattering.

The hood didn't fit me right because it was the designer's head measurements and it was pretty tight around my neck. I remember having the hood off between locations of the shoot or waiting for the Joker's solo shoot to be finished. The components were catsuit, hood, gloves, socks, and the white bits were pvc ones from Artifice Clothing.

With the 0.35mm-0.40mm thickness of latex you only need to reduce the size of the pattern by 10-13% from the sides to make it fit comfortably and without wrinkling, if it's too tight it can cause asphyxia or bruising :c

>>8744522
Latex can be super transparent to completely opaque, I know that this Lady Deadpool was made with Kink Engineering's(old and discontinued) red which is a bit see through if shined on both sides with lube - other brands like Radical Rubber (which they now carry) have opaque reds if you're interested.

You could probably get most of those materials cheaper than that set. I've never had to use thinner and latex is actually more forgiving than people think! Also I found it easier to use q-tips to apply the rubber cement glue than using a brush. I actually used QD's Ryuko as a heavy base for mine, but I ended up using a thicker grade latex than she did for durability (which is why the pleats don't fall as well). I also applied latex (a thinner grade than the garment) on the armor instead of paint by using contact cement. The main think with latex though is to give yourself enough room to make mistakes, so making mock-ups and cutting large pieces and then taking them in as you go is what I found to be the best way to save material.

Either it has a zipper (front or back, or rarely over the shoulders) in which case you need only a little lube and pull it on like a tight boiler suit.

Alternatively it has no entry zipper and you lube up well and enter through the neck.

There are videos that show this but probably not appropriate at /cgl/.

Their craftsmanship is fine, it's the quality of the rubber they use that sets them behind makers like LatexNemesis, KE and Andromeda.

They use Chinese rubber which is cheap where as most every other maker uses 4D Rubber which is gorgeous.

Basically, if you know how to glue rubber together and can pattern well, you could take the base of the Catfish suits and make them look much better with some effort. IMO, a 200 catsuit beats a 2K catsuit from Adromeda IF you know what you're doing...

Order some cheap latex from MJTrends to practice on (and then upgrade when you feel confident enough in construction) and use YouTube tutorials. There's so many resources out there that are simple enough to learn from, unless your issue is how to make a pattern, which will be way more challenging than learning how to construct with latex. The process is simple:
>clean your latex edges
>right side goes against wrong side
>tape the side of the edge that won't be glued (literally just scotch tape it so it doesn't fold under too hard or stretch when you attach it to the other piece)
>paint both connecting edges with rubber cement
>place edges together, right over wrong
>roll down with a breyer
>let dry, remove tape, done
>reinforce seams as needed

You know, after a long day in the costume you might want some relief. I think several of the cosplayers started out with a fetish suit and adapted it to fit, rather than wanting to make a statement of their availability.

Neck entry suits are in many ways more comfortable than those with full length zippers since zippers are not elastic and therefore tighten the suit unnecessarily when you move. The big snag is that neck entry suits take a lot more effort to get in and out of. So when you are in you want to stay in costume for as long as possible.

Absolutely incorrect. Video game characters I can see in latex. Superheroes? No way in Hell.

Latex doesn't breathe; wearing a catsuit is like wearing a full body rubber glove. All of the things that comic book superheroes do (running, jumping, climbing, fighting, etc) generates a lot of sweat, and they'd likely get heat exhaustion or heat stroke if they attempted their feats in latex.

Also, when tight-fitting latex tears, it splits wide open and shreds. Any amount of battle damage would ruin the suit. See Empowered for more details.

Furthermore, properly shined latex doesn't allow do to hide or remain hidden if there's any amount of light it can reflect. This is why it's bad for skulking characters like Catwoman or Black Widow.

Latex (especially catsuits) is really a fetish item. It's *meant* for sex...

You really can't paint a latex suit because it's technically rubber, the only way it'll stick and move with the rest of the catsuit is if you paint the teal with liquid latex.

It'll look 100x better if it was hand cut latex applique though which will give it a vivid and consistent look, but that's my opinion on the subject.

Hope that helps.

It can be comfortable under the right conditions, but the main problem is that it's not at all breathable, so even the tiniest amount of sweat will build up and not evaporate, preventing the cooling, causing more sweating, etc... it quickly becomes very hot and sweaty if the environment is just a little bit warm. Pretty kinky, if you're into that sort of thing, but not at all practical. Funnily enough, it doesn't hold heat in all that well either (only feels like it does due to lack of sweat evaporation), so it can also be quite cold if it's cold outside.

However, if the fit and temperature are perfect, then it rests gently against your skin and stretches fairly easily and moves along with your skin so there's not much sliding around, making it quite comfy.

>>8882091
Easier than body paint (and IMO, more accurate in appearance than body paint or spandex), I guess. Theoretically, you could also hide some padding underneath and have it be less obvious than some other options.

>It can be comfortable under the right conditions
That is what Kate Beckinsale said about her outfit for Underworld. It was usually too hot or too cold.

Would it be possible to use full body antiperspirant to avoid too much sweating without ruining the suit?

>> No.8887207

>>8885616
>Would it be possible to use full body antiperspirant
Maybe, but it probably wouldn't help much with feeling too warm. You'd probably have to use some kind of dry spray-on antiperspirant (the regular stick kind might react badly with the latex, not 100% sure) and it wouldn't get all sweaty and slippery and farty when you move. But you'd probably still feel warm due to having no sweat to evaporate.

It can be very comfortable, but the tolerance on that depends on your own personal preferences and the sizing of the item. If it's too small then a) you won't get it closed and b) it'll be difficult to move/breathe/both, plus you'll be at risk of the outfit tearing. Another candidate for that extra glossy look in latex: >>>/co/80925566

Seems they make latex with practically mirror finish these days, often you can see the photographer reflected.
