Does anyone else wish for the Baby Classical Series to be cheaper? I really want an old school dress but I feel they can't compete with the new print ones in my budget. I think that's also somethig other people struggle with and why ood school isnt as popular. Why spend $300 on an older plain dress when a gorgeous new print is coming out for the same price.

I found the 'oh so oldschool' comments on lolita updates quite odd. it's really quite a modern and updated take on their classic series; those chiffon ruffles don't say oldschool to me. Not to say there was never chiffon in oldschool, I just haven't seen it done like this. Not a fan of the lace either, I prefer beige cotton stuff like on their older releases (I'm salty I can't get a matching headdress for my older dress yes). It does look better in the lighter colourways though, that turquoise is very pretty, and the white is nice.
Ugh I just hate the pairing of the light chiffon and lace with the heavy velveteen, don't mind me. I preferred last years even though it wasn't my favourite. I like 2003 and 2010 OPs. Fleur de lis embroidered 2007 is ok.

I discovered Lolita right about when old school became "old school," and it's always been the style of Lolita I love most. Modern Lolita seems too trendy, not that oldschool didn't have trends but they moved much slower than they do these days, and the more delicate fabrics that are commonly used these days don't feel daily wearable for me. I basically live for old school, it keeps me going.

I don't like the fabrics of most modern lolita, chiffon is too delicate and more elegant rather than cotton/good quality polyester, not wearable for more daily situations. Also, it's hard to find a solid or simple patterned jsk that is brand new (taobao for example, last time i checked i saw only prints, prints, busy designs, chiffon, tea length stuff i despise), occasionally To Alice does plainer lolita items, the only one taobao shop in a sea of busy designs. I like some prints but old school jsk solid or patterned items have that feel that make me fall in love with lolita.

I have lot of legit old school (pre 2005, mainly baby, mainly OPs) and they're decently large, like 88cm. It might just be baby and ap but their oldschool stuff is like a USA 4-6 which is pretty normal sized. I can only think of ETC as being close to 80cm (had some 82cm stuff)
Their re-releases might be 2-4cm bigger, though that's not to say it's not a help to some people in fitting.
This is coming from a big tall person with a 33-34" bust, they're often measured incorrectly by japanese seller (like if I've found a lolibrary listing the official measurement can be 10cm bigger).

I have a question that I would love to have a discussion and some advice about!

What headwear and hair accessories do you consider old-school appropriate? This includes both the accessories worn back when old-school wasn't old and modern accessories that can be worn in an old-school coord without taking away the old-school feeling.

Bonus question: What other kind of accessories do you consider old school appropriate? Do you have a favorite?

I'm asking because I feel like there's more room to play with headwear and hair accessories than other elements of old school, and because I need to re-do my Lolita accessory collection really bad and I'm having trouble figuring out what I should look for. Headband style bows always give me bad headaches no matter how loose and comfortable they fit and my hair is quite thin so I have to take care that whatever is on my head doesn't look unbalanced.

Hey anon I am the same height as you and have been wearing old school for a year, I own five main old school pieces pre 2005 and the majority of those are not much shorter than modern lolita lengths around 90-94cm in length one of my old school dresses rivals some of my IW long dresses in length although one Meta op I have looks quite short on me. I think the best thing you can do anon is find out what will be too short on you/what the length of your current pieces are and work from there.

>> No.8650930

>> I'm 8650887
that anon and I'm a bit over 5'8" also! Depends on the dress really, I have ones from baby that are longer than/ similar to modern releases (like 92+). Of anything you'll have more luck with oldschool ap than modern lengths. Your classic (vm, mm) brands can be longer still, like I had a 98cm op. You can generally tell from looking at the dress though- that plain boxy jsk cut baby used to put out (not the babydoll) is quite short. Skirts are pretty much always short. Meta can be short. It really depends whether you want to let it bother you though, my advice is to not give a shit and to try peeking bloomers!
>>8641611
Don't go for ankle socks with really short dresses, if something is long sleeved it's better if it has lace/ ruffly cuffs for extra length, etc. Think about your frame/ shoulders with more petite brands like mm.
>>8650872
I like clip in bows/ twintail hairtie bows. I can't handle hairbands either. A simple ribbon style can even work.
Mini straw hats, though that can be hard to pull off. I think full sized boaters were still worn as well. And of course soft bonnets... though I hate them with a passion and want to burn them.

I think this one is my fave out of the ones you posted and I have no idea why because you can't even really see the clothes in this one.

Thank you! It must be a different shoot because I remember them all being outdoor pictures but I will take any of the photos I can get, I really liked them.

I admit that I never found them creepy like a lot of people did, but these indoor ones are less cute and more unsettling.

Since the only other photo I can find from this series on the web is so low quality I won't post it, I'll contribute by saying that one of the things I liked about older Lolita was how it seemed to be more slightly unsettling and badass. I love all the snaps of girls dressed to the nines like dolls and princesses that so often have these serous as death faces, and the streak of morbidity that occasionally interrupts the cuteness. I don't know why but that made it feel more real or something for me. Maybe it's because real life isn't always beautiful and has a dark side to it.

Would anybody here happen to know more about a brand named Cornet/Shotgun Wedding? I just so happened upon them on a auction site, and everything I've seen from them is old school which makes me wonder if that's what they make, or if they literally don't exist anymore and all that's left are old dresses. As far as I know, cornet as an operating brand doesn’t exist any more, and everything you can find by them is on the second hand market. They were never especially popular, although a couple of their velveteen pieces have become sought after. As far as i know they were a somewhat budget brand although with quality on the whole far better than say, bodyline. I actually own a blouse by cornet and it's really nice, just as nice as the better known brands such as angelic pretty, btssb etc.

This is a Fruits scan from the late 90's before the fashion had really gained some kind of solid footing, or people had an idea what was or wasn't lolita. It's just what some now well-establised lolita brands were putting out such as "Pretty" or Baby. This is just one of the outfits that bared a closer semblance. Pic related is a coord with more Pretty items that bares absolutely zero semblance to lolita.

By todays standard yes, this would be ita as hell. However, back then, it was a cute alternative outfit a girl is wearing out on the streets to do whatever is she does on the weekends. There were no regulations or "standards" like we have now.

Another godsend with wigs, is that headwear worn without wigs gets oil and sweat buildup on it. I bought a bunch of some old headbows and headdresses from the mid 2000's from a friend, many were 2nd hand even from her. I'm too scared to try to clean up the wire ones or anything on metal headbands since they'll probably rust. Headdresses are another story, those cleaned up very nicely.

I almost always wear wigs unless I'm wearing a hat. My hair is thin and fine and I've had some hormonal hairloss on my scalp. So my headwear stays pretty much pristine.

My advice (If you're going the solid color route) would be to pick 3 colors you like, then build off of that starting from the foundation pieces.

Getting a pair of shoes that works with all your pieces in the beginning is a lifesaver and you can always use shoe clips to dress them up if you feel they're becoming repetitive, saves money as well~

I bought this dress recently, it was on my wishlist for a long time, couldn't believe my luck when I found it!
On hello lace it says it came in different colors like off-white and black, not just the deep red x white, I'd love to see the black colorway.
http://hellolace.net/wardrobe/baby-the-stars-shine-bright/type/op/item/308/
Does anyone have any pictures of that?
I have searched high and low for it, in both English as well as Japanese (ベロア as part of my search term), but can only find the red colorway.
Tried wayback as well but the pictures were broken.
Does anyone have a picture(s) of the black?

Ah now i understand!I see at times these lolita wardrobe guides online, they suggest only a pair of shoes but in reality when you have like up to 5-10 main pieces you need more shoe variety, unless you have a one color wardrobe (like full black). The same goes with bags, in my opinion you need 2-4 bags as a beginner, i have way more bags but most of them are loliable.
I talk like this in case a person wear lolita often or daily because wearing the same coord become boring, using the same jsk or skirt with different accs/top helps a lot. Usually old school and solid pieces offer this possibility without mistaking colors from the print, for example i love mixing red with pink or pink with sax to offer a good variety instead of the classic pinkxwhite combo. A black jsk would be gothic or sweet if you change only few items, it's also cheaper compared to coordinate printed items.

>Also really love the combo of velveteen (in any color) with torchon(?) lace like old school Baby used (pic related), often the lace was the exact color of the fabric as well, so beautiful.

Yeesss, you just described a few of my pieces I have in black and I feel the same love, they are my absolute gems, more than anything a modern dress could give.

I just bought one. I have a 69-70 cm waist and it fit perfectly. Looked a lot like the one on the right. Didn't have any shirring. However, the lace was wrinkled and it looks pretty bad. You can see the shitty stitching holding the lace on the front in between the layers and it is freaking black thread, so noticeable. I'm hoping it irons out but it's hard to iron on velvel, you have to do it from the back with a towel over the fabric

I'd love to see collages of the old school main pieces everyone has.

Here is mine to start, with pieces from 2000-2006. I have a few more that are from 2007 and a more modern jsk that is a rerelease of an oldschool piece.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should add to my wardrobe?

It looks like a hybrid between Elizabeth OP and Isabel OP?
Isabel and Elizabeth are pretty similar as it is. The dress has smaller flower lace than Elizabeth, like Isabel, and it appears to be velveteen like Isabel, not to mention it's all black. But it has a ribbon on the sleeves and a skirt like Elizabeth.

Unless Elizabeth was released under multiple names, I'm certain that's an all black Elizabeth. But that's the only place I can find it.

So the page says this in Japanese:
エリザベスワンピース
数年前に受注生産のみで作られた、
とても贅沢で華やかな別珍OP。
贅沢な分、無茶苦茶重いです。
リボンがサテンリボンなのが残念。
値段上がってもいいから、リボンは
ベルベットリボンにして欲しかったです。
バックスタイルもゴージャス。
特にウエストリボンは見事なぐらいです。
一人で結べません;

The important bit is this (edited from google translate):
Elizabeth OP
Made to order only, from a few years ago.
Very luxurious velveteen OP (!!!!)
It's very heavy,
Ribbon is satin ribbon, which is sad because
I wanted velvet ribbon.

Anyways, the camera timestamp on the photos is Jan 6th 2005, so if the person posting here has one that is velveteen then we are likely looking at a 2003 or earlier dress (2004 would have been "last year")

Ok, so, I found BOTH dresses in the waybak machine after a little digging.

It looks like the lolibrary entries are second-hand data, not direct from the wayback machine.

Here is Isabel OP: https://web.archive.org/web/20011208110930/http://www.babyssb.co.jp/order/op/125314.html

And here is Elizabeth OP:
https://web.archive.org/web/20011208175718/http://www.babyssb.co.jp/order/op/125311.html

Black x Black was an option in 2001, and it was make to order. I'm going to update lolibrary with the other colorways of both, the missing images, sizing, item numbers, fabrics, and the info about which lace goes where on Elizabeth.

Almost definitely outing myself here but I'm pretty sure anyone who can ID my old school collection at first sight and is a seagull is already known to me.

The pink AP set is a new acquisition. I've been trying to ID the Meta gobelin and blue AP jsk for a while now. I know Meta released a gobelin set in 2005, 2010 and 2012 for sure, so far with livejournal-carbon dating I know it is at least as old as 2009. I'm thinking I might go blog.livedoor.jp spelunking to try and find it. I've given up all hope on finding information on the blue jsk except that I've seen it for sale in black as well.

I don't know where you guys cut off "old school" but for me it's around 2006. I have a number of BtSSB from between 2006 and 2010 as well, considering I didn't get into lolita until 2010.

I also posted this in a mail thread a while ago, but I recently bought an AP Pintuck JSK from 2005.

Which ones are you going for, if you don't mind sharing? I don't want to get into a bid war with you, and just push prices up for both of us.
