it seems a lot of current gothic lolitas throw on a black colorway or Halloween motifs and call it a day. the dramatic gothic "look" is rare.

At this point I honestly don't think that egl/ega is coming back any time soon, at least in North America. It's all sweet/classic with a touch of gothic. Is Mana/Moitie even popular anymore in Japan?

It seems like on CGL (at least in this thread) there is a lot of nostalgia for gothic and a wish for it to return. Outside of CGL, gothic is some sort of weird, dark-sweet hybrid or is just too busy to be nice gothic, but do you think that it will soon make a comeback? I just had to sell a couple of Moitie pieces painfully cheap because no one was buying, but everything in this thread looks so nice.

Plus side, also bought some incredible cheap Boz and Moitie pieces to sort of makeup for that stinging money-loss on the others.

This is just my personal opinion on it.

The first issue is simply that gothic brands seem more difficult to get than other styles. A lot of Moitie is very expensive even secondhand because no one wants to let go of it for lower, and new it's a bit more expensive than other brands. In addition to that, the Moitie that I've seen close up wasn't really worth that higher price, so I can't say I'm willing to pay those prices. Other brands like Boz and AtPie seem to have much lower production numbers as well as needing shopping services to obtain. They don't have english support so they're intimidating to seek out and they also don't show up a ton secondhand, at least not as much as other brands. Less variety, less visibility.

Another issue is that I feel gothic is getting 'absorbed'. Personally speaking I don't prefer to wear some of the most prominent and undisputed motifs in gothic (crosses, skulls, bats) and tend to wear more totally solid and old floral oriented pieces/styles. These days people seem to insist these are all dark classic and not gothic, while I still qualify many of my coords as gothic. I think the rise in this 'dark classic' and general overclassification trend in the past years has contributed to "killing" gothic as well. Textbook Moitie coords will always be unquestionably gothic but even a few years ago I think there was a lot more wiggleroom and variety in what classified as gothic, and these days it has been extremely narrowed down.

While there's obviously a grey area I do think there's a lot of dark classic rather than gothic today but I don't think it's the lack of crosses that make the difference. It's more like the cut and materials? The feel? The lack of opulence?

Obviously since the difference is so hard to put in words I see why there is so much confusion. Maybe a beginners image guide would be a right start.

I would like to get some MMM pieces but even second hand a simple JSK has very high prices. I'm not into prints a lot, i don't like church or buildings prints and i got tired to see Nameless Poem, it seems everyone and her mom own that dress. I saw some cute OP dresses from To Alice that are plain that would be a better alternative. Unfortunately, not all of their gothic items are lolita. Getting gothic items that aren't super popular prints or OTT is hard nowadays.

Hey gothgulls, I need your help. I really want to try to rock some thigh-high boots like pic related (although maybe with a bit longer of a skirt, and with boots that end slightly lower on the leg), but all the examples I find are of Mana-sama himself, or the very occasional Iiralina. Before I drop any money on similar boots, do y'all think this is possible to do without looking like an ero-ita, or is it a look only the gods themselves could hope to achieve?

that is a fairly ero coord. i think boots that high break the gothic lolita mold and become closer to ero or visual kei.
