(btw I'm OP but didn't want the dress pic to be the one for the thread).
I'm really, really new to lolita and I'm not sure how to buy a blouse to match different types of dresses. I can tell apart a gothic vs classic vs sweet blouse, but I was wondering if the typical "sweet" blouse with a peter pan collar would work for this dress or if it would be too much. I'm just nervous to shop overseas only to get something that isn't really appropriate for what I've got.

>> No.8625310

I think a blouse with a peter pan collar would be really cute with this! Especcially if you're planning on making a country-styled coord! :)

I haven't had to deal with any international buyers yet, but isn't it dumb to be angry with someone for not wanting to break the law? Besides, it's to your disadvantage if the package is lost because (I think?) Paypal will make you refund the full amount to the buyer but the post office will only give you the marked-down value. If this happened to me I'd appeal to the mods of the sales site/ community.

I think you should stay away from very busy blouses such as blouses with princess sleeves or a jabot. Get blouses that are not too frilly so they will match many styles. IMO pic related (minus the bows) is pretty easy to wear with just any style.

For this specific dress I'd recommend a standing collar because the cleavage sits very high (even for lolita standards). Idk how it'd look with a peter-pan collar.

Posting here because there's no MGS thread, but are genderbends okay to do for a Metal Gear cosplay? I'm in love with Kaz's design in TPP, and binding is completely out of the question for me. (If I remember correctly, I think my bust is about 110 cm). I'm working out/trying to get into shape, but even then I'm not sure if I'll be toned enough to bind. Honestly I'd keep the design mostly the same, except longer hair. I'd considered the skirt, but I don't entirely want to handle the prosthetic issue. Thoughts?

Protip: You can generally tell what the sizing will be based on the amount of shirring or the lack thereof on any given piece. Sometimes you have to look up the lolibrary link. Most sellers will list the lolibrary link. Some will actually post the given measurements or compare their own to the listed ones.

On average... this is what I find.
No shirring - 86cm bust 74cm waist
1/4 shirring: 86-94cm bust, 74-78cm waist
1/2 shirring: 86-100cm bust, 74-85cm waist
full shirring 86-120cm bust, 74-95 cm waist.

Give or take. I've seen some 1/4 shirring go well above 100cm, and some full back shirring that won't go much above 98. I've seen some releases listed at a max of 97cm bust but could easily be worn at 115 without maxing it out or stretching it beyond the breaking point. More recent releases tend to run bigger on average, while older releases before 2008 tend to run smaller.

I'm new to cosplay and sewing and I know most of the big no-no's but for cosplays, do most people make their own patterns, buy patterns and alter them, or alter existing garments? And how do you learn to make patterns that don't come out looking like an old sock?

>> No.8643493

>>8643488
Depends on the person. It's not bad to use pre-existing patterns, but some character designs are too weird to work well with commercial patterns so you would have to alter them. Some people alter existing garments. Some people both modify and make things from scratch. Of course, making everything from scratch will score you higher if you enter a craftsmanship contest or something.

> how to you learn to make patterns
Practice, really. Look at the way your clothes are made. I started out using pre-existing patterns; it's pretty repetitive so once you have a good grasp of it, you can draft your own.

>do most people make their own patterns, buy patterns and alter them, or alter existing garments?
Any mix of the above. Some clothing pieces match up with real-life counterparts or patterns almost perfectly. I buy commercial patterns for bigger items and alter them since it's much less effort than drafting from scratch.

>And how do you learn to make patterns that don't come out looking like an old sock?
Trial and error, make muslin mock-ups of everything, and don't be afraid to make mistakes or make multiple muslins. Google if you hit a snag, chances are other people have also asked the same questions for the past hundred years. A dressform can help as well. I also recommend pic related book if you have a dressform.

I draft my own patterns, but I have my degree in fashion. I don't expect most to draft their own blocks and it takes a great deal of time to fit and walk seams which is all done with a printed pattern. There are two ways to draft patterns; flat patterning and draping. Draping is significantly easier, but that depends on your dressform being custom to you. Flat drafting works better for drafting sleeves and alterations such as pleats. >>8643618

Credit card readers are becoming more common at cons. Usually dealers have one, especially the figure dealers. A few artists have them.

these are probably the best premade latex ears I've found; certainly the largest (and the most Undyne-like to me, personally.) The biggest issue I've had with the homestuck fins tutorials is that there's a very distinct separation between where the fin ends and your skin begins. At least a prosthetic would fix that issue...

>> No.8667009

The length of your bloomers pretty much depends on your personal preference. The most common length is above the knee/mid thigh but you can wear a longer pair if your dresses reach below your knees, or if you like wearing old school, where peeking bloomers are more acceptable.
As for the color of your petticoat, it doesn't matter, really, because petticoats aren't meant to be seen anyway. The only instance when petti color matters is when you wear a dark colored one under a light colored dress, because then it might show through the fabric.
