There's a few good indoor spots for photos, mainly that water-looking wall (I don't know where it's located, maybe someone else does? Maybe this is the fitness room wall?), the walkways can be cool with the lighting coming up from underneath, if you can figure that out. The tunnel to the people mover can make a good space too, pic related. Obviously there's also the Wintergarden, which looks really nice from the outside, especially at night.
The area around the Ren Cen is safe to travel around though, you should consider it. You can get nice shots on the Riverwalk, and heading towards Cobo you pass Hart Plaza, which is nice to shoot at and has the "Transcending" statue, which is a nice backdrop. There's also a Mariner's Church that has a big set of wooden doors people shoot at often.
The South Atrium in Cobo has great lighting, but it's probably hard to find space around there.

>> No.8575425

I'm going for the first time this year. I feel kind of weird since most of my old hs friends will be cosplaying whereas I'll likely wear lolita or dress like a normie for the entire weekend.

I wonder that myself. Crush 40 is good, but after looking at Acen's list of musical guest they should definitely step their game up. Same for the DJs. I'll be going for saturday only. I feel like going the whole weekend has not much to offer.

If you're not planning on dressing up and you're older, park in the greektown casino (Free parking!). I have done it every year and getting onto the people mover is a cinch.

If you DO dress up/are younger they probably will be doing the same thing they did last year. If you walk through the front you'll have to wait at the entrance to the casino (where they card you) to get an escort to take you from the floor to the people mover. They did a really good job last year, and I didn't see a whole lot of people waiting around (I think they assigned like 3 people to do the walks back and forth).

>Whos attending?

Me and my usual m8

>Do you enjoy the con? Hate it?

Love it. Only other cons I've been to are JAFAX (which is much smaller) and ACen this year for the first time (Which was slightly underwhelming), so I don't have a large frame of reference.

>Any good stories?

IIRC This was the first year where it was split between Ren Cen and COBO, buta joke with my m8s grew into an actual joke of my fat male ass crossplaying as Hanyuu from Higurashi. While making the walk between the two, there was a group taking wedding photos in front of the Joe Louis Fist sculpture. While I was passing them, they yelled out for all the cosplayers to join them for one picture, so we went and joined in, and somehow I was dead front and center.

Second story was last year when my friend decided to do the ENTIRE rave without telling us. It was like 3-4 AM and she hadn't even called, so I went out to find her. Tried calling a Taxi to take me back to the Ren Cen (We were at the hotel near COBO, forget the name), but it never came so I just walked over there. Almost got hit because some jackass was driving with no lights on, good thing the drunks I ended up walking with had better night vision than I did. Anyway, by the time I got there, she was in a cab herself, she stopped so I could get in and we rode back. As we were walking back into the hotel, my friend started pulling on my shirt like "OH SHIT LOOK ITS JON ST JOHN". Sure enough, there was he and two other guests my memory is failing me on, so we go over, say hello, ask for a pic etc. One of the two make a joke that he was actually a bum asking for money, and since my brain was fried I actually tried to give him 20 bucks. Those guys are awesome for still being inviting to fans at like 4 AM. Pic related (no bully pls)

On Saturday I was able to peek at someone else' but other than that I wandered blindly the entire weekend not knowing when or where shit was going to start. What I've always done (mostly just for fun and trying to burn time before the con) is scour the schedule for anything you're interested in, put it in a word file ordered by date>time>interest, then print it out and keep it with me.
Half the time I end up not following most of it (especially when I DO have a schedule available, since obviously it's possible to change interest in a panel between then and now), but it's been a real help these last two Youmas. Damn sight better than flying blind.

(Of course, then you could just say to print off a schedule yourself, but I like this method a little better because then it's less clutter to look at.)

>> No.8620817

The "sched" app was pretty useful though- A main schedule that you can sort by category, and a personal schedule that you can swipe events over to.

Also, if you're still trying to find a hotel look into the Crowne Plaza. Even though they're not listed on the Youmacon website as one of their hotels, they set aside a good number of rooms for the con, You'll have to actually call and say you're looking for a room for Youmacon, though, because if you try to book online it'll say there are no rooms available. Well, even though the lay is a part of it, i kind of want to do it just to expand the range of characters I can cosplay. >>8625475

I guess there's still a decent enough amount of people who come just to see them. It'd be better if they moved that kind of thing to the Media Expo and used Youmacon for Japanese bands, but there's barely any Japanese guests period, so that'll never happen. Damn shame, too.

I knew the game room felt smaller. It wasn't terrible last year but it definitely felt like it wasn't as good. It was kinda cool that they moved most of the obnoxiously loud games to a different room though.

But hey I only really go to game rooms at cons super early or super late to avoid legions of 12 year olds sitting at one game for hours on end.

I also feel like a big part of the problem with the guests is that the people running youmacon are too buddy-buddy to NOT invite them back most of the time. The only recurring guest I really don't mind that much is Jon St. John and that's because he's amusing as fuck every year.

Is opening night on Thursday worth going to? I've been attending for the past 4 years but never been there on a Thursday but this year I'll have a chance since I'll be meeting my roommates Thursday morning at the marriott to avoid traffic on friday.
Didn't know whether to go to the bar or actually see what the opening ceremony is like

The opening ceremony is on Friday. I mean you could probably adventure a bit downtown and find some fun places to goof off there, but there's not really anything going on until the night and that's just mostly getting badges and mostly meh-tier panels.

I bought a 3-day pass, but I was just offered special shifts on that weekend that will work out to around $500 for 20 hours Fri-Sun. Since I wasn't planning on cosplaying anyhow, the money's worth more to be, but it sucks if that's a badge wasted.

Downtown is worth exploring, lots of good restaurants. But Thursdays are pretty relaxed, there's still plenty of people around and cosplayers but not many events going on. I just use it to unpack, iron my shit, pre-reg, maybe walk around the center and get an idea of where everything is (I get confused in the ren cen a lot, lol). I'll probably just wear my kigu and be comfy and grab food with my roommates after we get our badges.

This is the funny thing about the Ren Cen. It was literally built to withstand a zombie invasion. I'm not kidding. Those two escalators that are the only way to get between the 2nd and 3rd floor were made that way so they could be blown up in case of zombies.
