That's me. I'll be remaking the entire thing for next year so I'd love to get as much crit as possible before I do that. The main changes I'm making are better makeup, different visor, different proportions for the armor, and different fingers.

I've been wondering what to do about the wig. I mean in the show her hair is so stiff to the point where many people didn't even believe it was hair until it was confirmed by the writers. If I do it differently, I'm not sure yet what I would do. Right now I jut want to remake it because I can slightly improve the shape and use better quality wig fibers

Its all just hairspray. Its Ardas Malinda so everything just stayed that way after I sprayed it, thank god. I might make a bigger wig in the future, when I have the money to get another one, but right now this one seems to frame my face pretty well so its all i've got while i'm remaking the arms and legs.

Well, this time i'm using stronger materials, materials that won't break if someone tries to step on the legs, and I added height to the legs via some chunky heels that should hopefully give me her wicked weird proportions. I'm also planning on making a few different sets of arms, two short for mobility (So I can use my fingers) and two longer to mirror the extra length of the legs. I'm planning on making one arm with her cannon and one with her floating fingers again. Pic related is The base, which is fiberglass this time so its way sturdier, but tomorrow i'm going to be applying all the bondo and spackle and gap filler to everything to get them as smooth as possible. The bottoms are going to be Eva foam and the shoes are going to be screwed onto it this time, and i'm going to put sturdier handles in it. Its just a matter of knowing what I did wrong last time and using better materials and using math this time around.

For the record, this shoot was terrible. It was advertised as a multifandom shoot but steven universe took it over. Gravity falls had a small shoot to the side and over the garden wall was on the other.

I really thought we were going to mix shows, but one of the shoot runners jumped down and sprained her ankle. So one of the amethysts took over and went in a completely different direction than intended.

A clear visor wouldn't make her face white like that. It's very obviously drawn to simulate a neon mask and glowing neon yellow/green (especially against her green skin) in animation is represented through the cancelling of colors thus why that part of her face is white. It is very clearly meant to be a neon mask and even her black facial lines are colored a neon green where her mouth and nose are black and the simplest way of achieving a neon mask without having an LED contraption is through the use of a colored visor.

Neither of these are accurate - you will never get the amount of volume you need for a "great" wig without sewing multiples together. If you are just aiming for passable, Matilda does have more hair up top because of the way the hair is layered and is pulled back from the lacefront (which is also more accurate than CS's bangs style). But it's shorter and has less hair at the bottom.

IMO Lapis's hair only looks "right" when viewed in profile. There's been a few posted here that looked like lazy bobs in straight on photos , but had the correct flip when the cosplayer turns her head.

The wings aren't white though. Its translucent blue. If you know the material, which I can't think of the name of it, but I think I know what its made of, its really not heavy at all. Probably 5lbs max not including the harness.

That's not what I meant. The wings and the wig LOOK heavy, solid and clunky regardless of what they really weigh. If she was trying to go for a watery, floating effect she missed the mark. Good effort though.

I just finished SU and want to cosplay amethyst in the near future, i think I have a pretty accurate body type and face for her (aka im fat). What should I focus on to make sure my costume is great, not just ok? Any pet peeves for amethyst cosplayers?

Thanks! Couple questions then:
- I normally dont use Arda, but since they are quite thick would it be worth buying two of theirs and splicing it together? I would buy them in white and then probably tint them with ink to match Amethysts color.
-Shapewear is a definite, I always wear it with every cosplay
-I'll most likely buy or commission a gem, since I have never worked with resin.
-Luckily, I know how to reverse applique, thanks for the suggestion
-And lastly, I'm having issues deciding on arm socks or body paint. I'm worried about body paint rubbing off, but I'm also worried about seam lines or awkward skin to sock lines. I'll have to do some tests

buy your tights first for armsocks, then match the fabric for the applique to them. custom mix your paint for your face to match the tights.

overall torso paint is a pain in the ass and amethyst would need PAX and if you've never done paint before, just stick with doing your face and armsocks.

re: arda wigs: if you want to use their long wigs, coat the long fibers in a light layer of silicone lubricant. my friends have used the brand "liquid wrench" before to good effect. use it VERY sparingly otherwise you'll look greasy.
key areas are to spray the back of the fibers that are going to be touching your body, since those tangle the quickest.

I used Lilac from WLC and its really pretty! I matched it up with Lilac with from Tag. There's a slight color difference, but I think with enough mixing you can get a very accurate color to match. Self-posting from my recent con haha

What's wrong with people of different races cosplaying characters like Garnet? It's one thing if they're doing blackface, but I really don't see how a white/arab/latina person wearing the costume and wig contributes to racial inequality.

I mean, SU is a kid's show, above anything else. What if some little white girl wants to dress up like Garnet for halloween? Is it really hurting anyone at all?

I just don't really get how it's contributing to any type of racism. It's fair to say that sometimes, you come across a rude cosplayer who will berate a non-white/non-asian person for cosplaying an animu, but it's mostly just an extremely uptight, persnicketty minority that does it.

I've done Sugilite and the reason I won't wear her anymore is because how long it takes me to do the makeup. I went the poor man's route and build my prosthetic each time I wear her. The costume itself was simple and the hands were straightforward, but she certainly isn't the easiest fusion.

You can dress as whoever you want of course but white people wearing clowny wigs to cosplay Garnet will just look goofy. I like the allover smoothness in this Pearl's outfit, but a few nitpicks:
>wig bangs should be thinned out on the sides to give her face/head a narrower look

>hike up the socks and prevent sagging with eyelash glue or fashion tape

>hip scarf is a nice complementing colour, but leaving the fringe ends on looks really lazy
