Little less than 3 weeks until A-fest. Are you ready?

Magical girls. Hasn't been started. But better late than never!
>Any panels you want to see? Any panels you're running?
Don't do panels.
>AA or other con prep
Just gotta make sure everything is prettied for contest.

>> No.8535710

>What are you cosplaying? Is it finished?
No new cosplays for A-fest, which sucks. Doing sports and Hetalia for panels, as well as wearing lolita for a panel.
>Any panels you want to see? Any panels you're running?
Running 5 and feeling overwhelmed as usual. Most excited for my FMA panel.
>AA or other con prep
Trying to work on AA stuff as much as I can, ordering all my final supplies this weekend and trying to get prints done soon so I can bounce back to finishing the panels.

I do way too much, and I realize that.

>> No.8535977

>What are you cosplaying? Is it finished?
Hoping to work on FE: Fates cosplays now that I actually have a little bit of time to. If that goes well, we'll be competing in the contest again. We didn't get to wear our IM@S cosplays at SJ because of car problems and getting there late, so we're gonna wear those and possibly Serenity and Endymion so we can actually get a photoshoot in them.

>Any panels you want to see? Any panels you're running?
Ahh I'm not running any panels thankfully. I haven't kept up with what all panels were approved, or the ones people were trying to get votes for, so I don't really know what to expect this year.

>AA or other con prep
So much cosplay to work on, so little time.

Oh, and if anyone happens to be needing to sell their badge because they're no longer going, please let me know! The badge transfer cutoff is today.

>> No.8535983

>>8535977

This year was definitely weird for panels. The past two years they've approved super early, as early as April, but this year they waited until early July to do the first round of approvals. However, it's even more apparent this year that the votes make absolutely no difference. There are panels with 30 votes, which is low in #, but high for A-fest voting, that have not been approved or declined.

I am happy they (mostly) stood up for the Q&A ban, but there's shit like a panel about whales and then more borderline Q&A like, "Ouran Black Magic."

Come on, A-fest. Is it that hard to follow the rules you set?

>> No.8536003

>>8535983
Egh, yeah. I think they're just trying to really do that and let a few slide so they don't get hounded by preteen tumblr SJWs saying they're "oppressing" them or something. "WAH, YOU WON'T LET ANYONE HAVE ANY FUN PANELS, I'M GONNA MAKE UP RUMORS ABOUT YOUR CON SO NONE OF MY FRIENDS GO, AND EVERYONE HATES YOU!"
At least there's not an abundance of unrelated panels as there has been in previous years. A couple here and there is tolerable over all the handful of Disney and character ask panels.

We usually don't look for any panels to go to (if we go to any), until we're at the con. Too set in the ways of when A-Fest used to only release the schedule the couple days before/at the con`.

>> No.8536499

>What are you cosplaying? Is it finished?
Made my first ever cosplay this year for Akon so I'll try that again since I have no time/money for another magical girl.

Not interested.

First time booking a hotel over the weekend for a con so I'm excited to spend time with my gf finally, hope the Sheraton is alright.

Not going to answer directly because I'll be super obvious, but something from current season and something from the 90s.

I'm running a panel about figure collecting and a new panel about figure photography! Probably gonna hit up friends' panels and the industry guests ones too.

this is my first year where none of my friends or I are getting a hotel room-- we live too close by to justify the cost. Still, having a room to change in has always been worth it, so I'm trepidatious already

I don't even fucking know. I'm being Renge for my group's Ouran Minigame/Dare panel, and I know I should debut my Touka Kirishima cosplay (It's been done for nearly a year...) but outside of that I have no clue what I'm doing. I can't believe I have little over two weeks to get my shit together. (I never even unpacked from A-kon...)

>Any panels you want to see? Any panels you're running?
Co-hosting an Ouran High School Host Club panel like I did last year. We've reworked our old panel style to be more audience interactive and eliminated the ask portion so we aren't breaking the "No Ask Panels" rule. We've come up with a few fun games to play that can involve the entire audience, as well as a few hand selected audience members. Hopefully everyone behaves and it goes smoothly.

I might also be in a hetalia panel as Prussia, but Idk if it's happening because as far as I know no one really auditioned for it.

Pokemon, TF2, possibly Touhou (all are finished because they're from prior cons)

>Any panels you want to see? Any panels you're running?
I'll be surprised when I get there and plan which one(s) I'm going to from there.

>AA or other con prep
Need to make some touch-ups on my Pokemon cosplay and keep tabs on my funds...I spent most of my money on classroom stuff because I'm teaching this year. Because of that, I can't go on Friday, but at least I have that Monday off with everyone else.

This will be my first A-Fest. I've been to A-Kon several times, but I've heard that A-Fest, while it's a smaller con, is a lot better than A-Kon. I'm already getting good vibes because they gave me the option to mail my badge. What makes A-Fest so great? Any tips for someone who has never been?

>> No.8549453

>>8549410

A-fest can't compare to A-kon in terms of size and the benefits that being a top 10 con can (industry events, anime community guest panelists, etc).

However, A-fest is a solid "local" con. By that I mean, it's smaller, which is refreshing compared to A-kon. The panels are very hit or miss, since we can't pretend that A-fest has a rigorous panel process (A-kon is much more difficult to get into, but with dubious standards). That said, A-fest panels are definitely by local, or at least Texas, fans so there's the sense of community you lose at a larger con like A-kon. For me, A-kon has always been a "do these things" con, where A-fest felt much more chill and I didn't feel like it was a waste of time or money if I didn't go to a ton of events/panels.

I don't personally think A-fest is any better or worse than A-kon. A-fest just either doesn't make grandiose promises, or never promises much to begin with. The one point that has always been in their favor is that they do get decent Japanese guests. Lately they've been recycling through old ones, but it's something. A-fest is also much more easily accessible and even if you decide to drive, parking isn't $$$.

Like anon said, keep it simple for this round. Select the part of the song that showcases your voice most effectively. You aren't required to start at the beginning of the song. Some anime songs with male vocals that I can think of off the top of my head (They aren't all easy songs, but they're relatively mainstream so there's a better chance you'll already be familiar with some of them):
-Ready, Steady, Go! by L'arc~en~Ciel, (Fullmetal Alchemist)
- JoJo ~Sono Chi no Sadame~ by Hiroaki Tominaga. (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure)
- Go! by FLOW (Naruto)
- Logos Naki World by Yasushi Ishii (Hellsing)
- Head Cha La by Hironobu Kageyama (Dragon Ball)
- The World by Nightmare (Death Note)
- UVERworld by D-TecnoLife (Bleach)

Hope that helps!

Thanks to the both of you. I'm actually still jumping around with my plans for the three rounds. I'm currently planning on the full Nozaki OP for the final, should I make it there, Sono Chi no Kioku for the audition, and I don't know for the second round. I'm thinking about - something I just realized.

I was originally planning on singing We Go! for the final round, but only until I realized how cool the full Nozaki-kun OP is. I just realized I can maybe sing that for the audition. But then I'm still up in arms about what to do about the second round.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make it this long. Thanks to the both of you.

Generally 1st round can be in any language, as long as it isn't Vocaloid and originated from Japan. (Can be from a videogame, anime, drama CD, Jrock, etc) Second round has to be 50% in a different language, as long as the song's media is from some form of Japanese media, it doesn't necessarily have to be sung in japanese. That depends, anon.

No, good cosplayers are not hungry for any D: they are too busy taking cosplay seriously (which is typically a vast amount of effort and discomfort) to give a single fuck about some thirsty fuckboi. If they are a qt there is also a very high probability that they have dealt with a couple hundred other normie-bro idiots within the hour, many of which are just at the con to try and bang a cosplay chick and laugh at the weebs. As an attractive cosplay girl, there are few things more infuriating than the casual nerds who don't know shit about any of my costumes trying to hit on me thinking they are superior to other dudes because the aren't total nerds.....while I am clear at this goddamn convention busy being a total nerd.
Good cosplayers usually have significant others as well and are more often than not surrounded by other serious cosplayers/friends since they've been around the convention scene for a while.

On the flipside, you will see numerous hot pieces of ass in very shitty, revealing, closet cosplay. These girls are usually just getting into cosplay or don't take it very seriously, seeing it only as an outlet for looking really hot or revealing. Those types you might have a chance with if you simply want to pick up a chick. They don't tend to be as costume-obsessived as the first type I mentioned.

Essentially, the more seriously someone takes cosplay (typically the better they/their costume looks is a good indicator) the less interested in non-cosplayers they are.

Now, if you aren't one of the casual-tier nerd bro types I mentioned early and aren't salivating instead of talking fandom, the good cosplayers may give you a chance but, really, do not expect to fuck a cosplayer in costume at a con. Cosplay is expensive as fuck and most costumes are handmade and delicate.
You may be able to convince one of the closet cosplay types but do not go into a con thinking this is a reasonable goal.

I don't think the "bubble burst"
I think Anime fest in particular has been having a gradual decline in attendance for several years. Couple that with no programming scheduled after 11pm save for the dance and its going to be a ghost town. The reason I didn't show up after work yesterday is because they shut registration down at 7pm and there was no way to get downtown before that for me. Their scheduling this year is just stupid. Everything shuts down early and panels repeat. Why wouldn't you approve more to fill it out?

>> No.8596433

>>8596399
Because they're awful. I watched one of my cosplay friends duke it out on the facebook group with the head of programming who attributed it to having a job and a family and "the panelists take long when responding to us". So they basically decided it's the panelists' and attendees' fault they were late with scheduling and couldn't approve a lot. What a riot. I got here around 4 and just shopped then went to the Naruto panel. Nothing else to do on day 1 really.

AFest had a lot of bad behind-the-scenes shit this year. The woman who ran AA quit, and so the Dealer's Room runner was bumped over to AA. Only the old woman didn't ensure things were well-run, so new staff fucked it up. AA's new manager selectively ignored emails, and picked her friends as artists to get booths in AA. Then the new Dealer's Room runner "forgot" to contact a lot of the typical vendors/booths to come sell.

There's a lot of people discussing dropping AFest altogether and switching to San Japan. With how awful the staff is, I can't say I blame them.

>> No.8597433

>>8592416
Little known fact
small cons have less room to defend themselves about bootlegs, since they normally only have 2 or 3 vendors selling actual anime merch (you'll get a food vendor, a sword vendor, etc.)
But a show with 100 vendor spots? It's almost impossible to police. Dealers who sell bootlegs will slip them out onto the table any time they can get away with it. They're clearly okay breaking the rules, so why not?

Also, A-kon had a bad rep with Funi for many years, so I wouldn't be surprised if Funi doing a walk through was a condition of them having guests come back. Honestly, it's not a bad policy.

The AA is really just about catching people selling logo stickers and stuff.

Unless you can't find it online. Sometimes you can get deals in grab bags, or sometimes items are sold out online but you find it at a con. If anon wants to buy at a con, what's the big deal?

>>8602202

Nah, it felt good. I was a bit cold in AA, but I'd rather be wrapped in a jacket and feel comfortable than sweat to death. I was still hot Saturday, despite the cold temps, but I was in lolita.

There are some anime items that are either completely sold out or cost $$$$. I'm not the anon who bought the goods at the con, but I personally continue to scour conventions in hopes of finding a few out of print manga that aren't $1000+ on Amazon. If someone wants to buy at a con, why should it matter? If you want to buy online, that's fine, too.

The freezing cold temperature was the best part of the con. The Sheraton figured out that it was the best way to keep the con funk down and went ham sandwich on the thermostat. I hope they do it every year.

>> No.8607234

>>8606825

Actually it was lowered because they thought there would be 3 times more people in attendance.

It did help with funk though, but that could also be attributed to less people.

I mean I only ended up in a crowded elevator maybe two or three times the whole con...

Whatever the reason was, I'm glad they did it. And damn, it was empty. I usually have a hard time finding a place to sit at the tables in front of the dealer's room, or a plug to charge my phone in, but it was no problem this year. More than anything else, that was the giveaway that this year's gate was probably a lot smaller that past ones.

Smaller or not, there were some things that were hard to get into or crowded even if you did. Many times the arcade or Battletech room was absolutely swamped - although that may say something else about what *else* was worth going to at those times - and at some times of the day, the line for the Dealer's Room was almost as crazy as the line for the FLOW concert last year.

We watched Summer Wars again this year (*so* would like to do King Kazma cosplay!), and when the movie let out, there was a throng! I couldn't believe there were so many to see it again like us!

Oni-con: shit, don't bother unless you live in Galveston

Dallas Comic Con: its a comic con. I've never been

Anime North Texas: still small. This will be its 3rd year. Generally never heard anything bad about it.
