god, yes. face paint flattens out your features, contour helps bring back the shadows and highlights, plus it helps look better in photos. imo all cosplayers should contour a little bit, even if its slight/natural contouring

i agree with you for the most part, but neither the peridot with the best wig nor hanari seem to get the makeup right in my opinion. lipstick seems too much for peridot, while the girl with the good wig could benefit from contouring and heavier eye makeup

I'm getting kind of sick of it too. I don't like the separation between the collar and the bodysuit and I don't like the bodysuit having so much sheen to it where the middle looks sort of dull. It looks like she put on long underwear over a bodysuit. The boots are almost too bootlike and the way she did the knees looks horrible. Its clean, sure, but it doesn't look good. the only think i like are the fingers.

The contour of the nose in the face chart is still very wide Opal has a very thin nose. Contouring around the mouth wont give the appearance of full lips. You would have to overdraw your lip line and fill them in. To give a full pout you would do dark in the corners and light accents in the inner middle part of the lips.

So, no contour? It can be quite passable and character accurate. Part of contouring a flat one color face to to hold up to stage lights or camera flashes. I appreciate a Pearl with a contoured nose or a Amethyst with full drawn on lips. Have a drag queen with a thin contoured nose as a example.

Here's the thing of course you want to blend your contours and I'm not arguing that, but when it comes to a sold color you do need to be more aggressive with your shading otherwise with camera flashes or stage lights you lose your face definition and you start looking like a wall with eyes and nostrils. With beauty makeup I tone it down and go soft, but someone like Amethyst, Opal, or Pearl it takes a bit more to give it that oomph. As for the nose it's supposed to be pretty fucking pointy it was imitated in that spoof episode with a party hat.

Cosplaying Opal this weekend slightly last minute, I still want it to look clean and polished and I'm debating forgoing the arms since all my trials have come up looking ugly as hell.
What would you rather see?

This is a hard one, both are not going to look good.

If you have dodgy sausages, I'd suggest positioning them so that they're folded across your chest. You'll still get the 4-arm effect, but it may help mask how inhuman they look.

you can make a pair fairly easily. get a dowel rod to make the 'bone' structure, wrap it in stuffing/quilt batting, and make a pair of armsocks to go on top. they look pretty realistic and if you attach them to your hands with fishing wire you can move them around naturally as well

The costume itself is pretty bad (weird boot covers and top is way off), but the mango/orange color is spot on which is rare and the wig is voluminous. I wish it had a slightly different shape. Still a better Jasper then most.

I really want to do a genderbent Lapis for Holiday Matsuri, but I'm not sure where to start. I was thinking of substituting the skirt for a pair of blue shorts, and using a blue tank top with a deep v-neck. In terms of how I want to style the wig or anything, I have no clue. Fucking this. I don't even. I had someone literally screaming at me outside my college library the other day when I mentioned doing this.

Obviously it wouldn't be accurate to the character (I glow under florescent lights okay, kek) but why is it so offensive? I considered doing a straight hair wig instead since the fro would look ridiculous. I am hugely unsure how much hate that would get me (probably a lot), so idk.

Also, question for you gulls. I have allergies to a lot of makeup and body paint. Would you consider the cosplay garbage if I couldn't paint myself but the costume was spot on and well made, and had tasteful makeup? A lot of makeup and paints make my face/skin swell up and turn a bad shade of red, get itchy welts, etc.

Well thing about body paint in this case is that it's... really just part of the costume. You shouldn't ask others about this because there's no real consensus.
To me? I wouldn't do it, just because alien skin is a kinda important part of it.
It's like when you say "well I can't wear a wig because [reason], but what if everything else looked spot on?". Sure you can do it, but especially when your skin isn't even close to the character... It doesn't really matter because skin tone isn't an added bonus like lenses, it's an important part of the costume. If you feel fine skipping that then more power to you but other's aren't going to go "gosh what a great cosplay, everything (except the makeup but maybe they're allergic) is spot on!" and then reblog it.

But then again it might lead to less screaming.

Basically they went through and "white-washed" SU pictures, posing as a 19 white girl who claimed that this is how she imagined the characters. They either made them white with blonde hair and blue eyes, thin... stuff like that (besides Onion, he was made black).
After Tumblr flipped out about this the final post was the account revealing that they were a black MtF, who was ashamed of her skin color and always wanted to be white. A few tumblrites had already found out about the plan though and posted screenshots from the thread(s). Some people still believed it however.

All in all it was just funny watching how hypocritical Tumblr immediately became when they saw this.

I was experimenting with resin coloring today and accidentally ended up with something that looks pretty lapis-like. It was blue resin dye mixed with blue acrylic paint and white pearlescent paint. I can't remember how thoroughly I mixed this one so if you try something like this make sure you test it yourself first.

Color shoop only affects the skintone, not any patchiness or dark spots. TBH I find her paint application to be the best thing about the costume. The shirt/wig/contouring are pretty cringey.
