Yeah, thanks mainly in part to people like Nigri, the cam whores who've been trying to rack up change for their photos and imagery never had much success around c. 2005~ Because it's not hard to find a piece of ass to fap to. They realized thanks to her they could stand out by first netting your attention while you happen to be looking up other things you're interested in. (In this specific case, Spiderman.)

Disregarding the fact OP was clearly joking, I personally really do see this on par with cultural appropriation. These are beloved characters with serious sentimental value to the fans who actually care about this shit. For many, their fandoms have literally saved them. When my best friend died, it was anime and manga alone that got me through it and I'm far from the only person who could only get comfort from their fandoms during their darkest hour. Seeing these people who don't even give a fuck about it degrade it into nothing more than some geeky T&A fest honestly hurts me much more than some football team using names like The Redskins or some white chick getting a dream catcher tattoo without knowing anything about them or their history.

This. It was a safe haven, a welcoming community for us "losers", many of us fitting the stereotype of needing our weird niche community for companionship and confidence, since we found little acceptance elsewhere, so this feels like infiltration of a safe place by people who don't understand it's importance to us on more than a fandom level, or worse, people we feel represent the very norm of society that ostracized us in the first place. I don't think it behooves us to be totally assmad about it, especially when their intent is only to have fun and receive attention, but being bothered by it is 100% understandable, imo.

That's a lot easier said than done and kind of shows you don't quite have a true grasp on how much this has effected the scene. There's a lot more bullshit at cons that never was there at all, like drunken frat boys running around and hitting on anything with their boobs out. I actually found out about her because of CGL, and that was within the past year. Even if she has a lot of followers today, the more you give attention one way or another the more her following will grow, because people will see the name and look her up and start more conversations about her. There are people who have never heard of Elizabeth Taylor, it's doesn't make her any less of a legendary celebrity. Her fanbase is largely composed of casuals and normalfags who have never even heard of /cgl/. I'm not denying that /cgl/ didn't play a role in people learning about her, it certainly did back in the day.
