Thank you anon! I mainly brought that up as shorts/pants in otome has been mentioned a couple of times but I've literally never seen any coords with them so I got to thinking, how would that even work?
Would it be something similar to pic related but get rid of the fedoras and add a hair ribbon or something girly, a ribbon necktie, quirky print otk's or socks (maybe argyle) and a cute bag to give it a more maiden feel. I was also thinking a sailor coat/jacket/shirt with shorts might work without looking boyish. I don't know if it would work at all I'm just toying around with ideas.

For some context, both of your pics are from oji girl/ojikawa (basically, cute women's fashion dressed up with "old man" staples like bow ties, glasses and vests) features in magazines around 2011 - 2012. At the time, it mostly had crossover with mori. I think it has elements that could tie it nicely into otome, but like you said, with some alterations.

There's a lot of places you can try but they're very hit and miss. A lot of it is super overpriced ebay or Taobao, plus you'll mainly find ankle and crew length socks.
It's really one big treasure hunt so you need to persist with it and go in with an open mind. Here's the places I frequent:

>Alannah Hill
>Dangerfield
>Target
>Rubi Shoes/Cotton On
>Department stores (Myer and David Jones sometimes get interesting things)
>Socks stands in shopping centres
>Those odd artsy consignment shops and artist markets
>Forever 21, Topshop, H&M
>Equip
>Alternate fashion stores

Pic related is some stuff from misc Australian stores that could be used in otome with varying degrees of success.

Other than that there's the list of online stores here >>8582218 (obviously skip the ones in the first part.)

I personally like Sock Dreams for Western sized basics, and Grimoire for their designs. Teja Jamilla does tights but they're super sturdy and come in a range of sizes. Ebay can also be good for more simple designs.

How would one go about plus sized otome kei?

I'm a size 8-10 and can't squeeze myself into most of the otome clothing. Weight loss wouldn't make much of a difference since I tend to be quite wide with 40cm shoulders which prevents me from wearing any cute blouses, blazers, tops in general.

Honestly you can get some pretty good brand deals on auctions, only problem is the set ss fee. Sock dreams is extremely expensive for me, moreso than brand actually. Even new lolita brand socks are a pretty standard price for non-basic socks. I trawl aliexpress otherwise. Your list is pretty good.

On another note, does anybody have a dress in pepfox's normal cut? How's the fit/ construction/ length. I'm pretty tall. I'm tossing up between getting this release or the next. I don't know if this cut is nicer or if they just upped their stock photo game since they weren't the best before.
Yes I am a loser and I made a collage.
I don't think the price is even that bad anymore considering how low the AUD is.

Oh no, screw tights. Pear + tall. I only go for OTKs (sock glue!!) or crew socks.
I can only buy things that come in extra tall, so pricey plain tights usually. Some lace/ fishnet/ crochet pairs fit well though due to the nature of the open knit; it stretches well.
I wonder how hard converting tights into OTKs would be, like hemming them... maybe if one had an overlocker but I'd be too scared to try that on brand anyway.

Damn anon for directing me to gorman, the metallic shoe lolita trend has made me weak to metallic prints, especially polka dots.

How tall are you? They mentioned on their facebook that the sundress cut has the same skirt length (50cm iirc) as their normal cut. I own a dress in their normal cut and the fit isn't perfect (but better than JM's boxy cuts). The construction isn't brand-tier, but nicer than most indie brands. I think their normal cut is more versatile than the sundress cut though.

About 172cm tall (not that tall but for jfash I get used to saying I am); 86cm, 67cm
50cm is a little short but for otome it's not that bad. Normal straps seem a bit more durable so I'm proobably going for that if this doesn't sell out in a few days.

Generelly I'd say it's a bit tackier, weird colour combinations, slightly less flattering cuts, uglier art (imo lol). They also reuse a lot of old prints! If you look at Leur getter it's basically what ETC used to look like.

As someone who understands why most Otome brands are so expensive (Emkyu, JM, etc.) but has never seen a PepFox piece in person - IS it worth it? What is the construction and quality like? Her pieces are so plain that I feel like there must be a really good trade-off.

Sorry anon, but I have no clue how often they re-stock. It'll be different from store to store but if you ask the shop assistants nicely they might tell you. Also check out their social media (fb, insta, twitter) because a lot of updates get posted there.

>>8583816
Thanks for posting your measurements. Here's some quick info for you. Sorry if already know any of this, I just though starting from scratch might be for the best and potentially help other anons.

>Most Japanese brands will be ruled out
Unfortunately very few of them accommodate busts over 85cm, let alone wide shoulders. Luckily there's a lot of off brand options in the brand list that will work.
I especially like Cath Kidston. They do some very lovely and very roomy pieces.

>Take a risk with Jane Marple JSKs
If you're keen to try a Japanese brand then avoid ETC (tiny bust and shoulder allowances) and give Jane Marple a go. I find that their JSKs are roomy in the bust (90cm roughly) so they could potentially work. You should specifically check out their Dans Le Salon line which is sometimes a bit larger than their normal stuff. I would avoid JM skirts that aren't from this line. Normal skirts are about 65cmish in the waist, Dans Le Salon are 70ish.

>Define your silhouette

You see a lot of lovely waist ribbons (you can diy this yourself) and cropped cardigans in otome which can be quite flattering.

>Legwear will be an issue

A lot of stockings and socks are going to be too small so you'll need to stick to offbrand. If you want something more JM inclined go for stockings by Teja Jamilla. Feel free to give ankle socks a go. I know people tell slightly larger girls to avoid them, but I think they look cute.

Other than that I suggest that you use shoes with a slight heel since they're more flattering (that goes for everyone though.) I'd also avoid busy necklines with large collars, or super OTT necklaces because they'll put too much emphasis on your upper body.

>old ETC had lovely designs and simple but reliable cuts
>new ETC has shitty designs and poorly executed re-designs of old stuff

ETC was over-dependent on Ando and failed to grow the brand beyond her work. When she left, ETC was lost and lacked artistic direction. They did attempt some new stuff but it was rather ugly and for the most part failed. ETC then went back to re-hashing Ando's old work. There's nothing technically wrong about that, but it feels a bit morally grey. I think it burnt their bridges with Ando (she wasn't happy about it) and hurt a lot of their long time fans. The 'new' redesigns just feel like a big cop out, and the JSK cuts are odd and ill-fitting.

Ando took all of her strong followers over to her new brand, Leur Getter. They've doing well and I foresee that continuing. They don't yet ship internationally but Ando is keen to reach out to a wider audience.

Yeah I've worn both JM and etc at 92/72cm (+broad shoulders), you just have to be careful with checking that items have shirring or elastic, or in the case of JM that it's one of their larger cut dresses. You're right that most brands are dropping in price, but it seems to be worse for ETC. The re-hashed stuff is part of the problem but overall most pieces have dramatically dropped in value. Just take a look at the second hand sites or auctions. Items that would have sold in a heartbeat in the past now shelf warm until they're given a price cut or two. I know from experience that semi popular pieces bought at a fair selling price less than 6months ago are now selling for 1/2 of what people were paying. Depreciation is bound to happen but it seems to be quite extreme in this case.

I guess ETC lovers are moving onto different things and the onslaught of pieces has flooded the market and devalued the brand.

I agree that it's easy enough to find blouses on taobao/aliexpress, but it's not very easy (in my experience) to find the other stuff, which is why I was asking. I'd like to bulk up my wardrobe with it so I can wear otome a bit more casually this year.

Hi, can I ask a question about the fit of an older ETC op? I have some unshirred OPs from 2013 (spoon one, and pic related) and they fit my 84-86cm C-DD bust perfectly (maybe the elastic puff sleeves contribute?), but I've had bad experiences with an older blouse and jsk not fitting. Checklist-anon here, I was actually thinking more along the lines of the morigirl mixi checklist. Like asking what kind of girl is the morigirl aesthetic designed for and going from there. It's a good way of defining an aesthetic without being overly prescriptive.
http://morigirls.livejournal.com/1122.html

Though having a basic rundown of outfit components is good too. I just worry it makes people scared to experiment. A bit like how lolita had all those beginners guides back in the day which then morphed into people thinking anything not on the list wasn't "real loli".

In my experience, it's still called "otome" when it's named. You'll see some Japanese girls on instagram and tumblr tagging it with this.
However, outside of my lolita friends and friends who were involved in the heart of a fashion, most of the Japanese people I knew rarely referred to their style by name. It was much more like "I like girly, cute things with quirky touches" or "I like light colours and gurokawa."
I'm sure it differs person to person, but the one girl I was kind of close to who wore ETC/LG/Milk on the regular never really referred to it as anything beyond brand names.
On the other hand, I have had a Japanese make acquaintance of mine say that I was looking very "otome" at one point.

Yeah, they also look a bit unnatural if you get what I mean. There's something very artificial looking about the Lolita aesthetic and the clothes wear them. Omg. I'm so glad that this has a name! I love otome kei, but there are times when I'd rather wear something boyish with a soft edge. That's a point. While in lolita it's more like a "how dare you to mix that colour in when there's no such colour in the print" nitpick thing, you can actually play around with so many colours in otome - that's so refreshing.

It's like a lot of girls coming from lolita don't understand how to coordinate an outfit if it doesn't all come from the same collection. >how dare you to mix that colour in when there's no such colour in the print
God, I hate this. I guess I'm a terrible lolita, but I think it's much better to choose a color that compliments the dress, rather than strictly stick to what's on the print. Why limit yourself like that? Learn some color theory, have fun.

>> No.8603646

>>8603614
I think the reason for that is that the popular modern prints already have too many damn colors in them. No one is gonna say a damn about you mixing some red in with a blue and green dress but if the dress is a heavy print with 4 different colors in different shades (not to mention neutrals) you need to stick to those or risk looking like a mess.

>> No.8603724

I think honestly with otome you can just wear whatever cute things that you feel like for the day. It's meant as daily wear and as such shouldn't take as much planning as what you would for a lolita outfit worn for a special occasion. Of course it's fun to plan outfits in advance and buy things to match etcetera but ultimately with wearing otome brands there really aren't any rules, you just wear what you feel looks right, even if it happens to be mismatchy one day and super matchy the next.

In the right hands, you're not going to look like a hot mess by having some fun with Lolita and color. But try and experiment a bit in a public space and you'll get all sorts of less imaginative lolitas crying foul and pointing at the rulebook, same with shoe choice. Girls end up afraid to make the occasional mistake or to color outside the lines in any meaningful way. Without experimentation, you get stagnation, which is where western lolita seems to be right now. Too much stagnation and the fashion movement dies. Western lolita is way too obsessed with perfection when it should be embracing looking like a mess from time to time in the service of exploring new ideas and maybe trying not to be a carbon copy of Japan.

>> No.8604393

>>8604324
Agreed. Yeah, not every experiment will work, and you might look like a mess now and then, but that's part of the learning experience. I guess I like otome because it feels more like an actual fashion, I feel like a lot of lolitas have no idea how to dress themselves without all those arbitrary rules (not all of them, but I swear someone just randomly made half of those guidelines up).

Well I'm 172cm which is a bit tall, but maybe not by the standards of somebody taller. Otome dresses are longer than lolita ones I've found so it's not that much of a hindrance, other than some etc empire waists without elastic/ adjustable straps hitting above my bust, and of course long sleeves not being long.
I'll start posting more outfits.

Matchy outfits can still be otome; I don't know why /cgl/ has this idea that unless you're using color pops and being super quirky it's not otome. I will say that I think it's way less fussy, and otome wearers are less likely to bitch about your pinks (or purples, here) not matching perfectly.

So much this. I love a simple otome outfit (I like cute straight forward 'plain' preppy styles which some simple coords can look like) but I do find the quirkier, non matching ones more fun and interesting to look at and give this style an individual look that's fairly unique to it.

What's the consensus on mixing chiffon with knits? I have a cute short-sleeved turtleneck that would pair with a chiffon ETC dress I have, but it feels a bit weird wearing a knit shirt under such a light dress.

>> No.8609333

>>8609292
Personally, I like mixing contrasting textures. I think a chunky cardigan with a chiffon dress works better than a turtleneck underneath though, but I guess it depends on how they look together.

>> No.8609346

>>8609292
You could go in the lightweight direction too if you wanted to maintain a light and airy feel. Maybe a laceknit bolero in a wool like angora. (One of those reasons why building knitting skills is a good thing in otome, designing the exact perfect knitwear for setting off a dress)

Can you all help me with an otome coord? I really love navy and dark green together but I feel like I'm unable to make a decent coord with those colors. Honestly I prefer the second coord but I want to like the first better.

I may try that. You don't think the white socks will look too out of place by themselves? I have a pearl headband that might work instead of the green bow...

>> No.8609529

>>8609482
I quite like the first one. Take off the the belt, sub in the red shoes. I want to say having a cropped knit vest with medal-style brooches would give it a touch of whimsy and coordinate thematically with the book bag, but that can be a hard piece to find.

>> No.8609558

>>8609482
Why aren't you using the original waist tie with the dress? If you don't have it, I think it'd be nice to use a nice thick grossgrain ribbon to cinch the waist in rather than those belts.

I also personally think darker socks would go better. I can imagine the socks wont look right when you put it all on. I know otome is about contrast and using different colors, but I just think the socks don't complement the dress whatsoever.

I would also consider wearing a blouse with a pussybow collar instead if you have one? Or something with nice lace details. At the moment it's just not quite there, it's too simply styled and kinda normalfaggy. I'll try do up a quick coord with the pieces you have and recommend the kind of pieces that would work alongside it better.

>> No.8609583

I'm just starting to get into otome, I bought a dress on impulse earlier this year but haven't worn it yet because of stupid reasons. Part of the issue is that I'm mondo tall for my build (6') and of course the dress is built for tiny people :/ So I was wondering what the opinion of underskirts is or if the length requirements aren't strict like they are in lolita.

Bunnies Tea Party in brown from Honey Honey. I'm still struggling with how to coord it generally, particularly as we head into colder weather, though I do have the beige AP furry bunny scarf that looks really cute with it on my hanger. I don't want the fact that it cuts me so far above my waist to add what looks like more length to my already crazy long legs.

>> No.8609655

>>8609583
A lot of it depends on how big your legs are. If you have big thighs, a skirt hitting them at the wrong point is going to look awkward.

>> No.8609697

I'm tall and thin, but I do have quite a bust (which I don't mind flattening with a sports bra to look better in my dress). Length is the weird part for me.

In that case, it should look more intentional if the skirt is shorter. Underskirt would also be fine like you were mentioning, or you could improve the coverage ratio by pairing the dress with a coat of similar length. One problem though might be where the waistline and bust seaming hits on the torso, but I take it you've already dealt with that.

Do you have a tumblr or whatever that predates Mulberry Chronicles with your works on it? That is a good start, but either way people are going to compare you, just work hard to keep your designs different and deal with it, be polite to anyone that brings it up no matter how aggressively. Or else come up with something else.
I'm pretty sure there's going to be a whole bunch of knock offs on the market soon anyway.

I own a few MILK items, but I agree somewhat with >>8610644. In my experience, the quality isn't as good as JM and doesn't go as cheaply overall as ETC. For some reason, a lot of even unpopular MILK releases continue to be listed/sold for over 10k.
I do wish I had bought a blue gingham OP I saw at CC Harajuku for like 8k, but iirc it was slightly damaged.
Also, personally, I think ETC/LG are better at cute prints and JM better at more mature looks, so I'm not sure how MILK fits into my preferences. I do love stuff like the pic you posted, and obviously their bags are nice, though.

I see what you mean but I do find it to be well made - better than ETC in most cases. I usually get Milk secondhand anyway - and because it is often less popular I can get new/like-new pieces for really cheap. The cuts are usually really flattering as well. I was surprised at how nice a few pieces looked on me despite not being that skinny for a petite girl.

As >>8610805 said, it has a more 80s, (and even 60s mod) influence to it. A lot of the dresses and skirts are a bit shorter than the usual otome brands. I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting the dress in the pic. Wouldn't have minded buying it brand new now that I think about it, but I was indecisive for too long.
