for example, leather, latex, corsets, fishnets, bustiers, platform and/or high heels, collars, suspenders/garters etc.

there are a few things in this thread here just because the skirt's above the knee (there are a lot of dresses that are supposed to be on or above the knee and a lot of girls who wear normal length dresses who are just over 160 and make them look shorter) and I don't think that automatically makes them ero instead of gothic... but very short dresses are also bordering on "not lolita" too, so idk. Mostly I consider coordinates with bondage/erotic (...) elements ero, skirt length is iffy.

one of the things i look for in an ero outfit is an element of deconstruction+luxury, so the breaking down of the traditional lolita silhouette is accompanied by something high-fashion or decadent. this keeps the quality up, and keeps the spirit of elegance despite breaking some lolita rules.

crossing boundaries is a big part of what i see as ero(tic). taking a risk, pushing the limit, but remaining dignified. a lot of it still pushes back against the male gaze; it's often too weird to appear alongside the "sexy lolita cosplays" guys will fap to.

these are my subjective feelings, not an attempt to define the style objectively.

It's true that ero has a closer resemblance to western goth than perhaps any other lolita substyle and therefore can be a bit of a grey area. However, there are usually a few key components that still keep it just within the umbrella of lolita fashion. It doesn’t look like 'typical' lolita fashion sure, and that's pretty much how it's always been. The less clear cut nature of ero has always rustled jimmies and caused endless debates since I can remember. So it goes.

Indeed but the inverse is also true. By 'Japanese press' I was actually referring to the G&L bible and other publications showcasing alt Japanese fashion, particularly from Harajuku, not mainstream or otaku publications that don't know their shit.

Anyway, to break it down, the lolita components of their ensemble are

>bell shaped (cage) skirt (length and shape are significant)
>bloomers
>hair crown (oldschool lolita trend)
>fluffy bunches (another oldschool trend)

The other parts are more typically goth, but not completely out of place for gothic lolita.

I've never seen regular goth look quite like this although I agree that there is certainly a v-kei look a lot of ero lolita but again, v-kei in general was highly influential on the early gothic lolita look and ero is no exception. Grey areas gonna happen.

Every time an ero lolita thread pops up, someone always says "ero lolita was never a thing," "stop trying to make ero lolita happen, it's never going to happen," or "it was a misunderstanding by earlier Western lolitas." But other people claim that it was definitely referenced in the GLB at one time.

I don't have earlier bibles myself, so I have no way to verify this.

Would a helpful anon with access to the older volumes (and a basic reading comprehension of Japanese katakana) be able to provide a scan?

Ero loli isn't a real substyle, it's 100% ita created. This isn't my speculation due to hating the style, this is a legit fact. In Japan and China it's seen as ita as fuck, not some kind of legendary status substyle that only the best and most seasoned lolitas can pull off the way it is in the Western world. I think it can theoretically be done well (though I've never seen a well done strictly ero coord, only ones labled ero that were really just goth) I'm just saying that it's not seen as a substyle in Japan.
