I'm always a little wary of Muslim women who wear the hijab. Behind 80% of the 'free choice' a Muslim makes in my admittedly anecdotal experience, there's a fanatically religious uncle, fiancé, or father behind it. Or in the case in the Middle east, the government makes them do it.

I can see someone combining a hijab with an all black aristocrat coord, but even with a more elegant silhouette, the wearer would still have to balance their coord with some kind of hat - not necessarily a bonnet like in here though (maybe wide brimmed like an Edwardian lady in mourning would wear).

lol that's me, I definitely agree. I didn't realize how frumpy I looked until I saw this, it looked better in the mirror earlier. But yeah, I have a lot of problems with it, I want to do it better next time. Style the sides of my hair so it's not frizzy, possibly take out that front bow/ruffle piece on the dress, fix the arms before I get my pic taken so the fabric isn't all scrunched up, and shorten the side veil on the headdress so it doesn't go past my hair/shoulders. After I fix all that I'll see what else I should change.

I've been looking at videos with a lot of Japanese lolitas and well older photos of the style. It just seems that wigs, being really matchy-matchy, and the giant poof is a more recent thread.
Back in the day, it was all pretty liberal with a lot less poof. Even the lolita's I see from Japan seem to not follow the guidelines as strictly as westerners seem to do. Most of them don't even wear any make up.

In my year in Japan, the only time I really saw Japanese lolitas wearing petticoats was at AP releases and a big events (like tea parties). Once in a great while I would see a lolita wearing a petticoat out and about in Harajuku/Shibuya or obviously taking photos in a garden somewhere. For the most part, they seemed way more lax than the Western community. The only time I saw a girl wearing a petticoat on campus was this girl wearing Misty Sky to our campus' TedX event, and even that was very light poof. I also had a few lolitas in my classes (both Japanese and Chinese girls) and a few lolita acquaintances/friends.

i disagree that genitals are the only thing that matters, because sex is the result of a lot of different factors, and there are many reasons why someone might be accurately classed as male or female despite having the wrong genitals, lacking reproductive parts, etc. there is no "only thing," there's a network of things; and many outliers.

HOWEVER, simply "feeling" like a gender is not enough imo. i can respect pronouns but people who think it only matters that you FEEL like a gender annoy me as much as people who say genitals or whatever are the only thing that can define male/female.

Personally I don't like the legwear and shoes with this dress either.
