New Joan's/Hancock's fabric thread.

I'll start this thread off with a stupid question.
Is is Joe-Anne's or Joh-n's? I keep pronouncing it Joe-Anne, but I suddenly realized it said "Joan". We don't have one in town, so I've never had anyone correct me on it before. Is it Jo-Ann?

>> No.8550266

Can someone help me figure out/verify the type of fabric this is? It's a skirt I found at a thirft store. I really love the weight, feel, movement, and the fact that it's darn near impossible to wrinkle.

The tag says 97% Polyester 3% Spandex (if that helps any)

The offside is sleek, lightly shiny. It has a silky texture.
The right side is velvety-suede like. It is also matte.

I really want to figure this out so I can buy a bunch of this fabric type for skirts and dresses. I asked around my local Hancocks, and no one could really match it. The faux suede wasn't really heavy enough to match...

Since this is the Joann thread I'll vent about my experience there this morning.

>Just need 1 yard of fabric, I'm going to be in an out in no time.
>NOPE
>Grab my bolt and a number.
>I'm 58, the screen says 53
>There is one lady cutting fabric verrry slowly while talking to a customer about a car accident she narrowly avoided.
>Don't want to kill time by looking around because I'll buy fabric I don't need
>Oh good another employee is coming to cut also.
>Customer 54
>Customer 54 comes up with a huge ass pile of fabric.
>Proceeds to have the cutting lady help her calculate exactly how many yards she will need to upholster 9 chairs.
>Freaking 10 minutes later they figure out 5 yards.
>Goes to cut fabric.
>Oops! Haha, there's only 2 yards here after all that.
>The first cutting lady is still with the first customer.
>Finally back up arrives and my number gets called.
>New cutting guy apologizes for the wait.
>I say, "It's not you guys fault, it was that dumb lady who couldn't take 15 minutes at home to decide how much fabric she needed before coming here and wasting everyone's time."
>See her look up and glare at me from the thread section.
>Laugh about her expression all the way home.

honestly retail's bad in general, but joann's has a lot of problems. each store rests at varying levels of bad, but there's a ton of corporate policies that lead serious problems. the lack of AC or working anything was definitely an issue(the door was broken, we never had toilet paper, ac blew out hot air, cut table was broken, the spray paint cabinet was busted). when i used to do the truck, I almost passed out a couple times because it got so hot. funny though, when corporate walked in it was always icy cold. they'd also cut the hours of long time employees for new employees. the worst part though was the skeleton crews.

our store, a medium sized one just below superstore, on off season (january to september) operated with 3 people in the store a number of times. I often would "play manager" for the back half of the store because managers would refuse to come to the cut table. hell, one time i spent 4 hours alone with no backup and a 30 person line. because I was one of two people who knew anything about fabric, management began having me train people after I had been there for 6 months. one time, after a 7 hour shift, I was basically forced to stay an extra hour to train someone who didn't bother to show up to their shift on time, even though I told them I had plans.

my 2 years working there was nothing but stress. from the yelling customers, to literally no help as a cut table employee, and the extreme pressure to perform well. my boss was obsessed with corporate policy and upheld it to a T. everything was about text signups, and item of the month, and customer satisfaction surveys and they'd kind of guilt you about them and making the store always look perfect. we were expected to price point organize red tag daily. and all cleanup and all of this always fell on closers hard.

TL;DR it's stressful don't do it. don't be a closer. don't be competent. the money I made wasn't worth all the pain, blood, and spilled coffee I saw during my time there.

You do not want to work at Joanns. I worked there for a month while I was in nursing school and it was literally the worst job I have ever had and I worked at Target as a cashier every summer in high school.

People will expect you to know how to make everything and they will want you to give them a detailed tutorial while you are checking them out/cutting their fabric. You will get Aspie cosplayers, furfags and the worst, quilters.

People who shop at Joann are cheap, entitled fucks. They will yell at you over coupons, sales, exclusions, pretty much everything. I have never come so close to murder.

My manager got angry at me because I wouldn't physically tackle some girl and her boyfriend who had about five hundred dollars in fabric cut and then just walked out the door with it- corporate policy is to just call the police.

I quit on Memorial Day with no notice. Felt good, man.

I feel you anon. My old place of work was a nightmare because my boss did shit like that. I had an agreed 3 days off once for surgery recuperation for an injury I got AT work, that they of course never paid me workman's comp for. The day after I got my surgery done my boss called me and forced me to come in because the sales person on duty that day called out because "she wanted to go to the beach." My boss let her and kept calling me until I finally gave in. So I had to drive to work with one arm, since my other was in a sling, and when I was drugged up with vicodin for pain. Also it was truck day and he made me do truck all by myself. With one arm. I think my other coworkers actually yelled at him for being such a piece of shit and letting that other girl have off, I can't remember very well since you know, I was on pain med for the surgery I got THE DAY BEFORE.

I've been working at Jo-Anns for three years and its a huge pain in the ass. Recently we got a new district manager and he's a complete imbecile who'd never even worked on the floor. He expects miracles from us with our tiny skeleton crews and our giant superstore.

Our store recently got the highest customer satisfaction store in our district and in order to "get an even higher score" he wants us to say, "it'll be my pleasure to help the next customer in line" to get our scores even higher. When literally ever single compliant on our surveys has been about not having enough people at the cut counter or registers. Also, that our store is way too hot. I've had guests come up to me sweating begging for us to turn on the AC.

>My line is going all the way past the pattern table and the classroom
>I end up ringing on two registers to get the line down
>Customers are incredibly understanding

That day was complete bullshit. I'm so thankful I didn't close, because whenever a customer handed me an item they didn't want I threw it behind me. The store was completely wrecked.

Then a month or so later on Father's Day we had 9 people working. The one day we all know for a fact no one is coming in, is the day we get our biggest crew.

Like making sure everyone gets one weekend off a month. Making sure the dreaded Clopen only happens when someone calls out due to illness. No one works more than 5 days in a row. Trying to make sure at least a couple of your days off are together a month.

Is anyone good at that? I've never seen it.

We have fucking computers with programmable parameters in there and they still somehow suck at making sure people are scheduled like fucking people and not chattel.

Summers between college I worked at Lowe's.

>Two days into my schedule I saw they had me on for 11 days straight.
>scheduler is out that day so I have to wait for day 3 to tell her
>Scheduler says she will take care of it
>Two days later (day 5) still see schedule has not been fixed
>Tell scheduler again (she says she will fix it)
>Day 7 arrives and scheduler is off again
>Day 9 arrives and still not fixed
>Say fuck it and work all 11 days in a row

Not one apology.

That shit was strike 1 against Lowe's. Two more things happened and I was ready to quit. One more shitty management mix up in the same fucking month and I quit.

I wish I could have told my 20 yr old self these people do not care you are good at this job. Stop caring or quit. Save yourself the headache. You'll be ok. Sanity is far more important.

So I feel you anon. I feel you.

I worked in southern california. Our summer can get really dry and really hot. Sometimes itll be 100 outside and 110 on the floor, since all of our vents are broken. Itd get even hotter in the stock room. And im pretty sure the water fountains were connected to the toilets somehow, because they would completely cut if anyone flushed the toilet. so if you didnt bring your own water you were sol and drinking toilet water.

One time the ac unit caught on fire. The whole store smelled like burning glue and chemicals. and customers were complaining like crazy and the manager wouldnt leave the office. They had to call the previous store manager to come by to show the new store manager how to turn it off. They ended up habing to climb up to the roof and "manually turn it off."

This customer who was an AC installer pointed out that our intake and output vents were installed right next to each other, so basically the cold air was getting sucked right back in before it could do anything. He was actually laughing and said he'd never seen one set up that badly.

I no longer work for Hancock, but when I did. Jesus. Our manager was an idiot, and incapable of scheduling properly. The 10 day in a row period, I took because our assistant GM was having surgery to have fibroids removed and we needed someone to close (which the GM never did herself).

It turned into 23 in a row after the other shift leader got canned, and they didn't replace her for two weeks.

I put my two weeks notice in the day they hired a new shift leader. They asked if it was because of that 23 day work stretch. I said yes, but also the fact that I had gotten a full-time job that I was moving to another state for.

There's a sort of sharpening block thing they sell, yeah. Its near the scissors, black box looking thing. I think its made by Fiskars. I have one, its not as good as getting a professional sharpening on high-end shears but if you have normal scissors (like the ones with the heavy duty plastic handles) it works just fine. You just open the blades slightly, slide them into the shaped grooves, and make a cutting motion a few times while sliding them back. My mom has one because no matter how she hides them, inevitably my dad or my brothers find her quilting scissors and use them for something ridiculous like cutting plastic sheeting.

The whole getting to the front of a line and then not knowing what you want REALLY bothers me. I'm a cashier and so many times I say their total and they give me this blank stare. Just hand me the money. It's either that or when people rush to the front of the line and, "oh my friend is still picking something out" and the friend takes 10 minutes to make it to the register.

They are allowed for my JoAnn. The basic policy is "it's gotta come back to us in the exact shape we sold it to you, uncut and unwashed, no funny smells". WITH RECEIPT.

And then the other day we had a customer who wanted to exchange a cut of fabric that she bought weeks ago because it was crooked. No receipt, so we didn't know how much she was really cut, so we reiterated the company policy to her about how we couldn't accept the exchange (return). She thought she didn't need a receipt because "the fabric had JoAnn's logo branding in the selvage". She was about ready to throw a fit by that point, because she "drove all the way out here" & "just wanted an EXCHANGE for the same cut of fabric that isn't crooked". I was sympathetic to her plight and called for a manager to sort it out.

Bonus, ran into more trouble when I measured out the same fabric for her on the cutting counter while waiting for manager response. The fabric had a crooked print to start with, so I let the guest know that either she can get A) straight cut of fabric and the print will be crooked; or B) cut the fabric along the print lines but the overall cut will be crooked.
She demanded both in the same package and couldn't accept that it can't be done.

One time I returned fabric to Joann that I had bought, like, 8 months earlier with no receipt at 50% off... And got it returned at full price. I had bought 8 yards of it (all they had), so they gave me the bolt along with it, which essentially served as my "receipt." I really hoped someone at corporate didn't do an audit or something and somebody got fired...

Also, one time at Hancock, I bought a fuckton of thread for an embroidery project and I had a 40% off coupon... The employee was green as fuck, and she accidentally applied 40% off to the whole purchase, so I got like, $40 worth of thread for a little over 20 bucks. I said nothing. I always wondered if she got chewed out by a manager later... Am I a monster??

It's kind of to our advantage though when the customer is guesstimating. You can nod and smile and go like "ah take a look at our measuring ruler here, looks like you want 20 inches? Wanna bump it up to 3/4 of a yard to be safe?" 9 out of 10 times the customer is ballparking and trusts you, the "expert", and will accept buying more than they came in for.

I don't even know where to start. Some of my favorite stories are when we have had to close the store due to an emergency:

> Power goes out randomly
> By policy we have to just get all the customers to the registers and ring them up, otherwise everyone else has to leave and nobody can enter the store.
> Power is obviously off - no lights
> "But can't I just get some lunchmeat?"
> 'No, the power is off'
> "Well can't you just weigh it up?"
> 'No, the power is off. We have no electricity'
> "Why aren't the ATMs working?"
> 'The power is off'
> A bunch of other similar questions, people pissed off that we can't cook anything...

Different time:
> Funny smell in the store... sometime later smoke is pouring out of one of the AC vents
> Fire alarms are going off (you'd be surprised how many people are OBLVIOUS to the sound/lights)
> Have to evacuate the store
> (insert same "but can't I..." whining from above)
> "No, the store may be on fire, you have to get out"
> Have to wait outside and politely tell people they can't go in
> People flipping out "WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE STORE IS CLOSED" (as there are multiple fire trucks, cop cars, etc out front that they had to walk past...)
Yeah, the store is on fire... but you just HAVE to go in and shop...
> We reopen, store actually still smells like smoke
> People are pissy that we closed because the store was on fire. One complaint after the other.

Also to be on topic, working the fabric table at walamrt sucks. No one buying fabric at walmart has any idea what they're doing and would argue with me to do all their math for them because "it's your job". It would be for horror stories, Q&A, and some sort of "how to shop at joanns without being a prick" guide.
I just don't want it to be a variation of fyeahjoanns or anything.
Though fuckjoanns is tempting.

Every single person should be required to work retail and work a really shitty holiday shift, then they can see what "a shame" it really is waiting on idiots who shop on holidays.
Why? I went and got a degree and a successful career just so I don't have to do that. You can be a respectful customer without having to have the retail experience. Manners are what people need.

Manners would certainly help. For some, just seeing what it's like dealing with assholes and idiots all day on Christmas Eve (or whatever holiday) might be eye opening. Seriously, some people act like retail workers are robots who don't have a life/family to go home to, or are just there to take petty abuse.

really long ranting about good fabric store experiences
but i really only go to joanns for like sewing notions and muslin and if i know they have a fabric a i need.
i talked about some fabric stores in philly in the fabric thread but i was staying in philly for a while and would go down at least 3 times a week for 4 weeks to Fleishman's Fabrics. they stared calling me by my name and one of the guys grew up around where i went to school so they are always really helpful and nice to talk to.
i was there last week and i got really nice silk that i found shoved under a bunch of stuff. it has water damage on one end, so the guys cutting my fabric told me it was 7 dollars a yard but he would give me the remaining 4 yard on the bolt for 6 bucks because of the damage and told me i could mostly just cut if off if needed.
it isnt really that stained and i can cut it off/ hide it for what im doing but they are so nice with prices even with the expensive suiting fabrics/wool.

We're in the middle of a giant sale (I work at the Canadian equivalent of Joann).
This lady had me measure, cut, and fold 14 meters of broadcloth of all fucking things, then got angry at the $4/m pricetag and yelled at me that she didn't want it anymore, even though I told her before measuring it.
Another couple screamed at me because I was "scamming them" by "stretching their knit fabric" while they were pulling the bolt themselves?
Another woman bought 8 meters of $40 silk, then got angry at a $5/m pricetag on something else and walked out without anything.

Yeah, my mother does this too. I always make a point of folding clothes/putting stuff back on the right shelf/tidying up in general, but she doesn't care because 'they're getting paid for it'. She's worked in retail and firmly believes that it's a job for idiots with no qualifications who are too lazy to do anything else, because that was the position she was in when she worked in shops. She also gets pissy when I point out that she's being an asshole, because I've never worked in retail, so I can't possibly know what it's like.

lol in our case it's actually my dad and I who are the aspies. My mom isn't even really mean, just ridiculously oblivious to the world around her and she seems to forget that retail employees are human beings rather very realistic wallpaper. She's the type to make a complete mess of displays for no reason, wipe her runny nose with her hands before fondling a piece of cloth and loudly declare to the entire store whenever she's seen something that she thinks is ugly or overpriced. She also likes to stop dead in her tracks with no warning and proceed to block the entire aisle/hallway even when there are people behind her trying to pass, and holds up the line at the cashier because she insists on paying in cash with either pennies or a €100 bill for a €2,50 item. If she were a quilter, she'd definitely be that lady with 50 different bolts of cloth that all need to be cut into perfect 10cm squares. She doesn't look down on retail employees, she just.. forgets that they're people, somehow. Maybe that's even worse. Once we walked into a little boutique selling handmade clothing and she started loudly shit-talking some of the clothes to me even though the designer was sitting RIGHT THERE and we were the only people in the shop. She was actually surprised when I told her that she probably hurt the woman's feelings.
My dad and I, on the other hand, are the kind of aspies who are very aware of our faults and as a result get kind of hyper-vigilant about being considerate to the people around us. I'm honestly surprised my parents never get into fights.

When I point out that she's being rude she's genuinely apologetic, though. She just forgets it a few minutes later. And she was actually disciplined very harshly as a child by her father, who was kind of a dickhead who made all his children spend all their non-school non-sleep time working in his shop and pressured most of them to drop out of high school as soon as it was legal for them to do so. They weren't even allowed to spend more than fifteen minutes on their homework, much less have any free time. That's kind of how this story started - my mother has a lot of experience working in retail but still manages to be oblivious to retail workers' plight.
Anyway this thread isn't about my mother so I'll shut up now.

If you know how to get to the Uwajimaya, there's a little cut in the parking lot to the right of the store that goes directly to the Mills End there.
